This was my first real gaming channel that I really got into. He can always find good things in terrible games, and I've always liked how the channels humor is random and smart while remaining generally clean. Not that swearing bothers me now, but at 10 years old it makes sense for your parents to limit your TH-cam sessions.
CaptainAtomSmasher absolutely love the PS2, have over 70 games, just getting back into it after years away, need to start selling a load of games that I don’t play, and replacing with ones I know I will play. Awesome system
somehow, my librarian, who has NO inkling of caring about video games or anything related to them, has a japanese ps2. I'm getting it for free from her, so that's sweet.
All the differences you mentioned are 7000 vs 9000 models, not North America versus Japanese consoles. You could buy a PlayStation 2 in black with the power supply built it and the same design right here in America
Heeey cuh, lol..jk..from weslaco myself. Kind of funny I stumbled on some one from the valley. I scored 2 ps2 slims from a pawn shop in weslaco for $25.. did good lol
If you're importing a Japanese console and you live outside North America, you need a step-down transformer. 220V-240V would fry the PS2 to bits, since it is a 100V console.
Pete Z Yeah I used the FreeMcBoot method myself. My friend's friend actually let him use it and then me through him. If you're in the market for Japanese games I reccomend "The Daijibin" or "Demolition Girl" in Europe. Sadly, it was never released in the States.
Folks in Thailand had done that for over 10 years they're still pirates through and through. And I just bought my third PS2 in 2014 man I think I loved my PS2s too much LOL! (Modded Matrix Infinity V1.93) All three (DC,PS2,GC) are now joined my retirement home, they still kicking ass though, all three of them, showed the kids of today how the real consoles roll!
The clip-on screen screws on two threaded holes in the back of the PS2 Slim. The power plug goes right into the back of the screen and also feeds the PS2, so no need of a separate power line to the screen. Ingenious! A few were also made for the smaller PS One. A small screen was also made for the PS2 controller.
The "PS2 from Japan" is actually the third iteration of the PS2, which they released after the launch of the PS3. The 2nd Japanese PS2 would look very much like the black one you have.. I know this because me and my cousin both bought PS2's in India and I bought mine before the launch of the PS3 and he bought his after.
getting past region locking on the ps1 games is easy, all you need is a piece of tape, a bit of toilet paper, PS1 region patcher(google it), a blank CD and a ps1 game of your region. You can play them with a swap trick
I love my Japanese PS2, I bought mine from playasia almost 3 years ago. I bought it to play the Japan only game Macross, and Initial D: Special Stage. I just started collecting Japanese PS1 games, Gundam Chars's Counterattack is pretty awesome. Playstation 1 & 2 plus the Sega Saturn are the best systems for imports.
I remember my second PS2 was a little multimedia center. I could do tons of things on it. Watch movies with different file extensions, same with music, install games on a hdd, go to internet, play online, play from backup disks or ISO or any other image files loaded up from a USB stick and many other things.
I have an American PS2 Slim, and it has the same layout as the Japanese one you have there (power cord, side pattern, etc). It doesn't depend on whether it's American or Japanese; the difference is that the Japanese one happens to be a newer model which is also available in America.
Glad the PS3 came out with region free games; you can import games from Japan or anywhere and they will work with no trouble. Though it seems not a lot of people know this, or the fact that it's backwards compatible with PS1 game.
Oops! I meant right stick. Conceptual successor to the PS Vita. Make sure it keeps the right stick and give it two more shoulder buttons (four in total), and have a big flip-up HD screen. And have it play PS2 games and use third party digital camera memory cards. I liked the flip-up screen of the Game Boy Advance SP. Protected the screen great.
The newest systems in the U.S. have the same body as the Japanese...built-in power supply and all. It makes it more convenient not having to carry a power brick when transporting the PS2 to a different location.
No kidding all games should be region-free! Free the games to the global market! The slim PS2 was great as it is smaller, lighter, and has a much quieter fan, compared to the big, original PS2. Plus, a 7 or 8-inch LCD screen can be clipped on to the Slim Playstation 2. Bring them on vacations to watch DVDs and play PS2 favorite games, like Mr. Mosquito (wished Mr. Mosquito 2 was translated for the US market), SOCOM II, Virtua Fighter 4, etc. A mobile (but power plug-in) PS2! The mind reels!
Swap Magic also works, and there's no mod chip needed. the sensors of the opening and closing disk tray have to be blocked with tape. There are many tutorials here on youtube for swap magic, it saves money, and I'm getting one for sure.
Yep it's region-free. My girlfriend plays the Japanese version of Project DIVA and Resonance of Fate on her French PS3 and they work fine on my UK PS3.
@Adamj1664 - Some movie studios do region code their Blu-Rays but a lot of Blu-Ray movies are region free. Region code on Blu-Rays is different to standard DVD. Blu-Ray uses A, B or C. It's usually safe to say if on the back of a Blu-Ray movie it has no A, B or C it's region free.
@Headshot4Fun Almost made me crying, you made me remeber my old hacked PS2 (i'm from Brazil o/), I had so much fun with it (:, every gamer from Brazil HAVE to hack their consoles, because the games/consoles are so much expensives, like U$750,00 for an official xbo360, U$900,00 for an official PS3, and the preowned next gen ones U$300+, and I'm not joking.
as for EU consumers, buying the asian version of the new model is good as it plays NTSC-J games and can have a110W up to 220W mains. The only problem is that the asian version only play region 3 DVD's and not region 2 (which is the standard for Japanese and European DVDs)
the gray console is the latest model on ps2 is SCPH -900xx, it is available PAL and NTSC, it,s designers gave up the external power suplly, and put it inside the console, that cause the console to heat up rapidly but it is better ventilated to, anyway i prefer the black one wich is SCPH- 770xx, in my country we put MODchips in our consoles, it is very eficient, is region free, autoboot, it don,t need swamp disks, we can write our own DVD-s, instal diffrent soft on the console, see mouvies, etc
Correct. The PS2 slim are all the same in all the countries. The console that Mark is showing is the SCPH-9000x. The 2nd slim model that don't have the external power brick and also look way better than the older one. Like the other models, also this is avaiable to all regions...
I live in Taiwan. I have a PS2 SCPH-79007. It's clearly a Japanese model (NTSC/J), but it looks identical to the American model in your video. Same styling, same external power supply. I guess Sony revised the PS2 slim over time.
It depends how and where the shoulder buttons are placed. L2 & R2 placed not behind but further inline of the L1 & R1 buttons might work well without interfering with each other. The L1 & R1 buttons could be the large size with the L2 & R2 being smaller to fit behind and inline of them, if you can visualize what I mean. Having four shoulder buttons would be important if this proposed follow-on Vita successor plays PS2 games, like SOCOM, and that should be the next big feature of a Sony handheld.
The Japanese version of Wild Arms: Alter Code F has voice acting!!! Also the Japanese version of Taiko no Tatsujin has more mini games! That is why I need this thing!!!
Instead of buying a lot of different versions of the PS2 which will only take a lot of extra space, it's much easier to just install a modchip in whatever version of PS2 you have. Then you can play games from any region. I especially recommend DMS4 which is a great modchip, although Matrix Infinity is pretty good too.
One problem though, Sony's warranty is only valid in the country of intended purchase. In this case, Japan. You have to make sure that the importer you're buying this from is reliable and will assist you if problems arise.
The JP one is just like my European PS2. It's a later model. I had one just like your American one but I sold it because my model was the only model you couldn't mod for some reason. You'd think it was Sony trying to lock out pirates but it was just a design fault. The newer models are all fully mod-able.
Hey, great video! Just wondered if you have Transformers Tataki, and if you could review that. Thank you so much for informing me the Japanese PS2 will work fine here in the U.S.!

why would anybody care about this

All games should be Region-Free!
I completely agree
***** What's freeloaders?
***** So you can use it in what consoles? Any?

I know, right? It just feels anti-consumer!
The PS2 was as old in this video, as the video is now.
CaptainAtomSmasher absolutely love the PS2, have over 70 games, just getting back into it after years away, need to start selling a load of games that I don’t play, and replacing with ones I know I will play. Awesome system

EDIT: It wasn't Japanese, sadly.
simply2spoopy Yeah but it's still a free ps2.
DreamParadox original fat? Or slim?
Watching your videos makes me appreciate my older consoles a lot more. I think I'll hook up the ol' PS2 and play something tonight. :)
All the differences you mentioned are 7000 vs 9000 models, not North America versus Japanese consoles. You could buy a PlayStation 2 in black with the power supply built it and the same design right here in America
70000 vs 90000, you mean
I like the silver design.
getting back to this video is like travelling into a time capsule
I feel like after today's GameSack nod, a good bunch of people will feel the need to rewatch some of this stuff, me included!
I brought a silver small ps2 with two silver controllers and everything that came with it for $15.00 at a pawn shop in Alamo tx
+Haruka Takahashi Not bad I got a PS2 With 3 controllers, Memory card, Multi tap, 1 game and the Network adapter for $22 around £15

Damn american versions won't play it....
Someday I will play that game.

Actually the power supply for the US 90000 models is internal as well. The 70000 models had the external supply.
who the F has a canadian dollar? wtf!
Canadians
Canadians
they have $1 and $2 coins
BIGGIEDEVIL oh so Canada is just like the uk
The SlimKerby yes we have coins because you can't really buy anything for a $1 any more so why have bills?
Thunder Force XI lol

Anyone ever played Half Life for PS2
Yep, a faithful port. Shame that it comes on blue disc. Other than that, it was fun playing the original half life on TV
Jorge Alves blue disk means it on a cd, whats wrong with that?
Blue Discs(CD ROMS) at least in the early models caused the "Read Disc Error" nightmare
ah, i actually didnt know well thats some knew information
I think the problem was sort of solved with the Slim models, the access to the lenses was obviously easier!
Good Thing that the PS3(all Models)are Region Free

Do u need a a japanese ps1 to play japanese ps1 games?
Steven Bauerle yes
+Steven Bauerle but you do not need a Japanese Saturn to play most Japanese Saturn games, you just need a boot cart like the Action Replay 4 in 1
+Dennis Forstner so you need a similar adapter to play US games on a Japanese Saturn?
Thanks for this detailed review, I learned a lot!
damn... im sad he didnt use Turning Japaneses for the end credits!
