Classic Game Room reviews the PLAYSTATION 3 PS3 video game console VS. the ATARI 7800 ProSystem. Yes the PS3 is one of the hottest game systems on the market, and yes the Atari 7800 was wiped out of existence by the Nintendo Entertainment System NES, but which is really better? With hot games like Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and Grand Theft Auto vs. Pole Position 2 and Galaga, this should be an exciting battle.
Now the the Bluray and HD-DVD format war are regarded as over, what does that really mean? Does Blu-Ray have a rosey future, or has the real format war just begun? In the PS3 vs. Xbox 360 vs. Wii battle for video game supremacy who will win? Some of these questions are brought to the table in this look from the technical side of things as the PS3. For your hard earned dollars how good is this thing and should you buy it or an Atari 2600? Now that the big games like Gran Turismo Prologue and Grand Theft Auto are upon us, should you sell a kidney to buy a PS3? Or is the Sega Genesis still a better game system? CGR-HD has spent some time with the new Sony monster and has spent time with the Xbox... so let's hear it.
Be sure to watch the original Classic Game Room episodes. Classic Game Room was the original classic video game review show on the Internet in 1999-2000, now on DVD. Wii, PS3, Xbox 360. Only on Classic Game Room will you see these kind of insane videos...gotta love this channel
Number 1000
Long Live Classic Game Room, all hail the robot invasion of 2085 where we will be atacked by brain people ❤😮
Only 13 more years until you have to do a follow up video on this, Mark. You better deliver.
Only 8 more years now
Can't wait till 2030 for the rematch.
The 7800 was test market released in 1984, two years after the 5200.
Love how Mark compares the craziest shit in his reviews. He should do a random video where he compares Cats vs. Dogs to see which is better.
2022 reporting in and I can update that the Fat PS3s definitely don't hold up like the Ataris do
What I really like about your videos is that you can show together Atari 7800 and PS3 or Atari 2600 with PS2 and comapre them in the way that it makes sense. Outstanding work with your Classic Game Room. Keep on! All the best!
Whats the difference between the racing controller and the paddle controller.
Also are you ever going to feature Ninja Golf on the 7800?
all good exclusives: killzone 2, resistance 1 and 2, ratchet, mgs4, littlebigplanet, uncharted, gt prologue, motorstorm 2, valkyria chronicles, warhawk, nhl 09 plays better on ps3. not to mention some of the stuff coming out soon like god of war 3.
Only on the Classic Game Room will you find an Atari 7800 vs PS3 comparison. Great video as usual! More people need an attitude like you towards games. Judging the games and consoles for what they are. Not having an allegiance or loyalty towards any brand, company, or console.
Many ps3 systems have broken down or had problems in 2014 and 15 but there are hundreds of Atari 7800 that work perfectly today
The difference is that I doubt people are playing 5 hr game sessions of Galaga that same people that play 5 hr sessions of COD! Still older console have proven time and time again to be way more reliable due to the simple architecture and solid state components. Most issues can be fixed if you have some soldering skills and a rudimentary knowledge of electronics!
Wish I had the 5200 my bro and I had as tiny kids. 😢
Dude you put out so many videos! This was a good one. I agree with everything you said.
22 years later, It's still the same size! Amazing!
By analysing your comment carefully, I think I have worked out that you rate graphics highly. This is a practice I once partook in, but long ago saw the error of my ways and converted. Regardless, you think what you want.
As for good Dreamcast games, Soul Reaver on the system is the definitive version, Soul Calibur is basically the same as the older ones, but still worth having. Toodaloo.
You probubly have the old 80gb versions, they discontinued the back-wards compatibility to sell more PS2 units.
Just to clarify that the controller plug is the same because it was an industry standard at the time.. practically only ninty had a diffrent controller plug... I use to plug my master system controller into my Amiga 500 for most platforming/fighting games... works great most of the time. later my Genesis controller also worked with my Amiga as well.
hehe very informative and amusing review. I have a PS3 and while I've had 2600's (though they broke on me) I never had a 7800. I almost want to find a 7800 since it would play my old 2600 games that I still have and you can use a Genesis controller? Sweeeet!
Anyhow I really like the parting shot of you holding Galaga and Resistance lol good review.
I have a playstation that old that still works after 20+ years, mostly. Disc-based consoles have more moving parts than cart-based ones, meaning more that can break in that time. I still need to replace the laser on one of my Saturns.
If you have them both, maybe you could do the Sega Master System vs. Wii.
Very humorous video, looking forward to more.
My 3 launch day PS3’s are still running like a champ, although one is virtually new and in storage. 😏
I see that you have Xevious plugged in! Good one my man =)
@acebunny17 clearly you did not pay attention to the avgn's video. In that video was the atari 5200 not the atari 7800. They are two completely different systems.
Having buttons to choose difficulty and pause at the same time is an awesome feature.
By the way, you were able to play Xevious on the PS3 pretty much as soon as it came out if you bought Ridge Racer 7.
"Real gamers can kick ass at both Galaga and Resistance fall of man"
That just made watching the whole video worth it.
idk what you mean, but the see-all-comments option is no longer available
That controller was stupid knuckle headed turble just turble
I'm talking about the system itself, not the games. I think I just crushed your theories.
It is true, whether or not you like 360 or PS3, they both still have long lives ahead of them. Their games will just keep evolving.
Only 10 years until part 2
Couldn't have been the fact that Nintendo had a monopoly. The moment the entered the market they started blocking stores from selling non-nintendo products "or else".
I don't mean to be harsh, but look at the 'thumbs down' on your comments; did it ever pass you might be wrong? Sure most of it is in opinion, but the 7800 wasn't made just to cash in or simply get the company money. Atari put a LOT into it, and it did pay off. And that's not only with arcade ports.
Great review!
I'm expecting that video in 22 years.
acebunny17 your thinking of the atari 5200 . the AVGN doesnt have a 7800 video
That could be a more accurate number. I was looking for a simple way to explain the difference between the controllers, given the space restrictions.
The real point is that the person who said that the paddle and driving controllers are the same has obviously never seen them in person.
Actually the reason the 7800 was not released in 84 because Jack Tramiel decided to turn the company into a computer company, so he shelved the 7800 because he was the founder of Commodore and hated video game machines. He decided to get into the video game market after the NES was success. He didn't have the time to make a new system so he just released the 7800 he had shelved two years ago
i`ll agree on that statement. most Gamecubes i`ve played on still work to this day.
A LOT of pre-NES consoles had that kind of control scheme. (atari 5200, colecovision, intellevision) Although they all had keypads so if anything, the atari 7800 had one of the best controllers of the time.
you misread my last comment. ps3 comes with a controller no matter what pack you buy.buying a certain pack will determine weather or not you will get a game with your system as well. so to clarify no matter what pack or sku of the ps3 you buy you get a wireless rechargeable controller.
Alright, can't wait till 23 more years to see if the PS3 is still functional! I expect a review of this on a holographic 3D video.
i forget how to even connect those old systems like NES...can u still connect them to the new HDTVs?
I own a ps1,a ps2,a ps3 and a ps4(Yes,I'm a Playstion fanboy from day one and I still a Sega fan because my first 16 bits console was a Sega Genesis model 1)and its impossible for me to compare an Atari 7800 to any of Sony's console or more recent console companies(Like Nintendo,Sega or Microsoft)You know why?Because Its not the same generation/technology,not the same gamers mentality. But I can easily say that the Atari 7800 was a great console and still a great console,so many great games and fully backward compatible of course,HELL YEAH!!!
That could be one case. Or another is that some people decide to make one purchase because either they can only afford one or their parents will only buy them one, and they try to convince themselves that they got their money's worth by seeing only the positives of their purchase and only the negatives of what they don't own.
Sega is a marketing master, they manged to create a controller that not only played on there Genesis, but was compatible with the Atari 2600 and 7800 which initially opened the Genesis controller to a wider variety of gamers back in the day.
You are incorrect. The paddle and driving controls are quite different. The driving controller has full 360 degree movement where the paddles only rotate in about a 330 degree arc. Also, you can't play a paddle game with the driving controller and vice versa.
The only commercially released game that used the driving controller was Indy 500.
I vote 7800 pro system. With the new 7800xm that is coming it will dominate!
it brought back interest in home consoles like he said in his video: NES vs XBOX 360.
@tphenomenalg i just have to ask you this:more advanced thus better,so do you mean that back then when atari jaguar was released it was the most advanced system so does that mean it was better that SNES for example?more advanced doesnt mean its better thats your personal OPINION!some people like me say that NES is better than PS3 some people say that Xbox360 is better than PS3 some say Atari2600 is better than PS3,its all opinions!
The worst thing to happen to gaming was switching from cartridge games to cds. Optical drives just have too many moving parts to last the multiple decades that consoles with cartridge slots can.
totally in agreement here:
the PlayStation controller is one of the most comfortable to use,
and has enough buttons, sticks, pads, etc. to satisfy most any gaming need.
yeah, I had LOTS of Nintendo Thumb and Atari Agony back in the day.
I think Activision's Decathlon was designed by orthopedic surgeons to bring in more business,
as it required an immense amount of waggling the joystick back and forth and rewarded the player depending on the vigor of said waggling. :P
I don't know man I just got my Atari 7800 today in the mail and I was rocking Dig Dug for like twenty minutes at least. My first time playing the Atari 2600 version in a decade plus and I nailed a 76,210. Time to check out some other games.
I think it is a draw right now, on the left side of my tv is now my Atari 7800 and on the right side is my PS3. Then I have a pile of other old school systems on a shelf underneath my tv.
Didn't the PS3 still cost $600 when this video was made? (leaving the PS3 on track to flopping like the 7800) :D
Not sure if it was intentional, but I actually laughed a number of times during this video, particularly when discussing the power supplies and controllers.
@SmokeyWallis - You don't need a video game console to exercise you know.
For playing ST2 on the Megadrive use the 6 button controller which is way beter to play with than the SNES controller.
In the review, he just listed all the awesome arcade ports! Is Donkey Kong Jr. not "exellent" enough for you?
What's the diference between dring and paddle controllers?
I own an Atari 2600 and a PS3. Both brilliant consoles in their own rights, IMO. Still, I wish I had a 7800.
Can't wait for this to be continued in 2020
excellent review.
only thing i could see the dust forming on the ps3 as u spoke.. lol
So... Atari 7800 came out in 1986, and NES was 1985 right? Why in the hell, then, did Nintendo release a game for the 7800? Isn't that like supporting your rival?
ps3's game library is pretty respectable now...i finally bought one last xmas and i havent been disappointed yet.
I just love this CGR intro ..
True - I was a bit suprised to hear that - usually here in Aus so much stuff never makes it
The UK's Atari 7800 controller was square with two big red buttons next to oneanother and a d-pad slightly off to the upper left
@tphenomenalg I'm not stuck in the past. I can appreciate a good modern game. Good to hear ya'll stopped. But dude, just because the PS3 is more powerful, doesn't mean it's better. Just because a console is more powerful, doesn't mean it's better. In fact, that's rarely the case. Think about it. Atari 2600 vs. Colecovision, Commodore 64 vs. Apple II, Gameboy vs. Game Gear, and the biggest example today, Wii vs. PS3. What the 2600, C64, GB, and Wii have is better games. That makes the console.
There's nothing wrong with owning both a PS3 and a Atari 7800 as the video not so subtly suggests :) I have a 7800 stationed to the left of my LCD tv and a PS3 stationed to the right of my tv.
Talk about a videogame generation gap there, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
Do a PS3 slim VS. PS2 slim review.
I like how the Atari 7800 looks. It is very classy, kind of like the PS3. In fact the PS3 obviously copy it. But what I love the most is that like the Neo Geo CD, it is one of those major systems where you can actually own ALL the games because they are not many. I bet that for a collector that's an amazing thing.
by the way ,see you at 22 years
I've made the switch from VHS to DVD already. BluRay doesn't deserve my money.
i love your reviews! will my ps3 working in 23 years from now? o,0
I'd like to have a 7800, but the price is too high to warrant playing a few dozen games. It's the 2600 I want.
I want to see the conclusion in 21 years.
Good job summerizing what the dude says in that comment. First, its CLASSIC GAME ROOM, which is more geared for oldschool gamers and retro anyway, and second, thats exactly how they conduct these vs. reviews with new to old systems, by comparing them for what they are, and what they were, and nothing more. Technology wise, sure the ps3 wins. But like the dude says in the end of the video, real gamers can kick ass at galaga AND resistence.
PS2 is superior to the latest consoles as of yet, although with the PS3's supposed "10 year lifespan" there's plenty of time left. We need big improvements fast, though, and not just from Sony.
just another 12 years and you can revisit this topic like you said lol ;)
My PS2 is still alive after 9 years!
if you do reviews 20 years from now, i will watch them, like i do now, and i will watch the review ps3 vs ps6 and xbox360 vs xbox 360backflip
its amazing that you could put every single atari 2600, 5200, 7800 on one PS3 disc
This video is why I bought an Atari 7800! To replace my long dead and gone 2600. Left side of my HDtv (Atari7800). Right Side (Ps3).
Classic Game Room rules.
thats the cleanest fat ps3 iv ever seen..., mark probablt clean it off camara like 6 times before the end of this video
not always. that was a design flaw when it first came out. I got some of a later model, and they work flawlessly. trust me, the 7800 controller is worse. you just cant ever get a grip on it.
Oh, Warhawk. Right...that game happened.
Weird comparison, since PS3 has a much larger list of features than an Atari console. I guess, he strictly talks about the gaming features itself.
Using the otheros feature you can play the atari 7800 on the ps3. However you can not play the ps3 on the atari 7800 ;). Oh while your at it you can play just about any other atari system or computer on your ps3.
atari is not boring it still brings back memorys when we play it ps3 and atari both win
If Sega Genesis Vs. Wii Were Under Way, I'd Take Genesis Any Day. Especially if It's the Model 1 That I Own.
ps3 comes with a controller and depending on what pack you get it also can come with a game. the ps3 was launched with more games then probably ever came out for the 7800.
efaustus9
Exactly
Ataribullshit sucks ass
If you weren't born when the Atari 7800 came out then you have no right to state your opinion on which is better.
infringementMAN
Yes I do
Ps3 has better games and everything
Did I say Atari sucks No
It changed since the 80s
It's like you can't compare a 1930 Chevrolet to a 2018 Chevrolet
New is obviously better in some cases
Worst controller after collecovision. The other looks really cool! Do you have a review of the sega can play nintendo games? (something like that...)
i am just wondering, why the hell did nintendo make donkey kong and mario brothes for the atari 7800 if the NES was already out?
just got PS3!! still great system!
Well, the 7800 was actually pretty lousy. When it came out, it was already behind the NES which came out a year earlier.
I don't think it supported side scrolling, so a game similar to Super Mario Brothers, would be impossible to run on it. Even the Atari ST didn't support side scrolling, although I think in the early 2000's somebody figured out how to hack it to get that to work.
Check out Giana Sisters for the ST. Atari kind of deserved to go under.
I like your 2008 video startups
Could you telll me something?
Well what if my Xbox360 maneges to live for like 30 years and when i'm in my late 40's i decide to play some halo and it brakes down, what should i do?
i'd like 2 see that review in 24 years :D
Very cool!!!!!!!!!!! Congratulations!!!!!!!
A way better library of "Exclusive" games as you said better online. Its way cheaper. I like the PS3 ive just recently installed YDL 6.1 but I just think the XBOX 360 is the best games console of its generation. They both have pros and cons but I think the 360 is better and I own 360,PS3 and Wii. Guess which I play the most ;-)
