Fixing the worst part of my DIY Dream Desk - Custom Walnut Keyboard Tray Build

  • In this video, I fix the biggest mistake from my dream desk project. (Which you can find here: • Building My Dream Desk ) My number one regret about that build is that I stuck a cheap, plastic, keyboard tray on it. It didn't fit the aesthetic at all, and functionally it left a lot to be desired due to its flimsy construction. Join me as I build a replacement for it made of solid walnut, with a leather-wrapped wrist rest!
    Big thanks to my friends Ian and Robin at Builders Anonymous, a special fx and costuming studio here in Toronto. They helped me out huge on this build and I couldn't have done it without them.

    Fantastic video! Beautiful work done by all that got involved. I would love to see you expand your knowledge and work with different makers. I think that knowing a little about a lot of different crafts is more fun than knowing everything about just one genre. Keep up the great work!!

      Thank you Martha, and that's exactly how I feel, I've always liked to have a little bit of experience in a wide variety of fields. I still have so much to learn about woodworking, but it's fun entering a world where I have zero expertise and seeing how much I can soak up in a day too. I think I'll try to do videos like this one on a semi-regular basis going forward!

    I am currently in the process of making my own computer desk and have the bulk of it done so far. I have zero woodworking experience and lack of proper tools but I think I have done a good job so far. I am a bigger guy and like having a good size desk and I like having an extra wide keyboard tray. I also wanted 100% solid wood and no MDF or plywood. I used a cut down acacia wood countertop for the top of the desk (to 61"x25.5"x1"), Pine hobby board for the keyboard tray (37"x14"x0.75"), and dimensional lumber for the legs and support. For me the ideal height of the keyboard tray is just higher than 29" and I got it to 29.25" off the floor. I actually have the desk assembled and without real precision tools it is level in all directions on top and is strong enough that it can easily support me sitting on the desk without it buckling at all and I am a big guy. All that is left is using wood filler on the screws to cover them up, a full sanding, primer and paint for the legs, stain and clear coat on the keyboard tray and top of the desk. With little experience you can still make a solid and useful desk. Also no one got hurt in the process (yay). I know I need to be careful with the rags when staining and finishing as I found fire hazard warnings for them and looked up how best to deal with them.

    The handrest looks okay but in my opinion with the handrest, I would of cover with the leather by making a full coverage without folding the ends. I mean, in the video they have an industrial sewing machine in the studio. I think it would give it a better finish instead of gluing it. But it still looks okay.

    The only problem with keyboard trays is that there is zero usable space for the mouse. When I did use one, I was constantly having to move to reach the mouse on the main desk surface where there was enough room to actually use it. The tray might work for light word processing and spreadsheet work, but gaming or anything really graphical in nature just needs more mouse movement than any tray could ever accomodate.

      @@ZacBuilds thanks for the info and heads up. I was able to find "it" rebranded from other random stores under different brands and they seemed to get poor reviews. I think I will look elsewhere. Too bad bc it looks great

    Do you have any issues with limited mouse space with this build? Especially for gaming?

    What kind of under mount did you use? I like the swivel!

    Great video my problem is just minimal,I have the same table for my computer table the only thing is my keyboard slide tray is working but it makes a funny noise how do I fix this problem?

  • @sighheinrich
    @sighheinrich 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like the table, really beautiful! I just don't like the setup. Screen is too high up and the space for keyboard and mouse is too flimsy and way too small.. but I guess it fits the esthetic and is fine for The Zac.

    Seems a little flimsy... Other than that, fantastic job!

    Hey mate. :-) Just recently found your videos and enjoy what you're making!
    Quick suggestion though... please try and balance the audio a bit better between the music and the talking. The music is often much louder in the mix - perhaps drop it down a bit. :-)

      Will do Craig! I think my next video that should be coming out ASAP has much better audio. I'm still really new to making videos and recording voice overs so I'm learning as I go haha. Appreciate the feedback!

    Yep, this is a good channel. I like your music choices too which is rare for me. As someone who is building a similar desk....why go for an under-the-desk mounted keyboard tray? Why not put keyboard/mouse on top of the desk? Do you use it that space for something else?

    Nice build! Question, not an expert on wood works, noticed you joined the 2 pieces of hardwood with just wood glue. Would that hold over time without any need of additional support (eg. screws?) thanks!

    • @ZacBuilds
      @ZacBuilds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Jeff! Not a lot of people know this outside of the wood working world, but 2 pieces of wood that have been properly glued together actually have a stronger bond than the internal bonds in the wood itself. So for all intents and purposes after gluing 2 pieces of wood together you can treat them as if they were a single solid piece!

    Hey I've watched both of your desk videos and I am planning on making my own desk. I just wanted to know where you purchased the keyboard tray? I haven't seen one that articulates like that online, I've just found simple ones that slide in and out.

    Great work...you're quite talented. I have a little tidbit of advice about your video though. Try to normalize the audio, so your music doesn't scare us everytime we're trying to pay attention to what you're saying.

    @15:08 - immediately puts a drink on the desk with no coaster. -____-

    • @ZacBuilds
      @ZacBuilds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you use high quality finishes there's really no need to use coasters these days. I've put cold and hot drinks on this desk pretty much every day since I made it and it still looks as good as day 1
