  • How does a Hyundai Genesis hold up in the long-term? Bought a 2012 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 with Premium + Tech packages in 2015 right after the previous owner completed his lease. The car is now 5 years old. Here is my review after 2 years with the car. I go over the pros, cons, maintenance, issues, and other general thoughts.

    I have a 2013 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 with 66,000 miles on it, saved up throughout high school and college to buy it and let me tell you it is the best purchase I have ever made. Glorious amounts of space, the car is huge for a sedan, but it still feels like I can maneuver it like a race car. The tech in it is awesome, especially since I upgraded from a 2000 Camry. The car gets some gripe for having to remove the bottom panels if you change the oil yourself, but if you can't handle taking out 10 screws, you should be taking your car to a mechanic to begin with. The new 8 speed transmission in the 2013+ models is amazing, and the computer that handles the automatic shifting is even more so. That car is extremely smooth whether you drive it fast or slow, and the brakes can make a hard stop feel smoother than it should. The Bluetooth is hard to set up, albeit, but once you connect your phone you'll never have to worry about connecting it again, since it connects automatically every time you get into the car. Once I graduate and get a real job, I plan to upgrade to a g80, given I get can land a steady job in this job market. From someone who does all his own work on his car, and spent countless hours researching and debating what car to get, I can say without a doubt that any Genesis is a great car to drive. They are fast, reliable, smooth, luxury, easy to maintenance, and best of all they don't have a BMW Audi Lexus or Infinity logo on them, making them easy to afford for a college student like me.

    Hi, my 2009 v6 Genesis has 223k miles. Still driving awesome, no problems. At 180k I had to replace coils inside the engine and oxygen sensors, apar of that just regular maintenance.

      Lucky you! I had a 2012 5.0V8 ultimate PKG. Loved the car and the performance. Unfortunately the engine began to burn oil excessively. (2 quarts in a 500 mile trip) She did it going and coming back. Then it began to burn oil excessively while driving around town. Long story short...
      Called the factory while still under warranty. (BETTER THEIR DIME THAN MINE.) After them testing it extensively, they agreed with me and replaced the engine. Unfortunately the transmission began to slip shortly afterwards. They decided to buy it back when I told them that if they had to replace the transmission too, that I would want them to replace the computer motherboards because they have memories, and if they remembered that they slipped in the past, they would probably slip again in the future. If you notice the current 5.0 V8 now makes 420 HP. instead of 429 HP. Only LEMON I've ever had...

    I snagged a white 2010 with 49,000 miles on it for $7,500. They were asking $11,900 but were going to have to pay a lot fee if they didn’t sell it in the next couple of days. I took advantage of their dilemma. My insurance guy said it still books for $11,500 so I think I did pretty good. Did I mention I’m a 54 year old woman? Lol. My husband was with me & was impressed. I love that car!

    Great review. I have the exact same car, except for being older (2009). I got it up to 250K miles before serious problems popped up, and even then it had more to do with aging and my abusive use of the car (this car did Uber duty for much of its life) than with the inherent engineering. Variable valve timing solenoid got gunked up and car misfired badly, but now it's fixed.
    Aside from the Uber abuse (which I'm done with), my Genesis has done some crazy road trips - including one of Western Canada and another one across the US. Back in late 2008 when I got this car, it was a bit of a leap of faith as I was dumping a BMW 3-series that seemed perfectly okay at the time, but it's the best swap I've ever done (try finding a 2004 BMW 3-series now that doesn't have a disintegrating interior!).

      What were the "serious problems"? Are you referring to the VVT solenoid? That's a simple DIY repair.
      Often the result of too infrequent oil changes.

    The only 2 repairs for my Genesis 4.6 2010 in 149000 kms have been one front wheel barring and a seized electronic parking brake.

    I am the owner of a 2012 Premium edition. I purchased in 2014 with 30k+ miles on it (CPO may I add). I currently have 128k miles as I use it to commute to work and long road trips. This is absolutely the best car I have owned. The price was just what I wanted and needed. The absolute only advice I give anyone who wishes to purchase a GEN1 Genesis please get the extended warranty. It pays for itself. Shop around and do your homework.

    I bought my 2009 Genesis 4.6 liter V8 in 2014 as a summer road trip vehicle. I've only put 19K miles on it since then----I own 2 older cars that I use as daily drivers----and still love the car after four and a half years. The only problem I've had is that if you start the car and release your foot too quickly off the brake pedal sometimes the car will shut down and the electronics will be stuck in a non-functioning mode. I've since learned this is because the starter was not reading the brake pedal accurately due to early release. To correct this you need to first press the starter button again quickly, then wait for a few seconds and then depress the button again FOR A FULL 30 SECONDS. This will reset the starting sequence. In four years of owning the car this has only happened twice and it was due to my being impatient and releasing the pedal too soon. Depress the pedal and hold your foot there until the motor is running and you should be all right.

    I have a 2012 Genni with the Premium and Tech packages. It's my wife's car and it was great the first 5 years of ownership. Then we experienced the headlights going out when using the turn signals...(going to the dealership in May for that) and the ac compressor went out last Summer. That was 1300$ and we got lucky with the brake control unit that was recalled-The wrong brake fluid (synthetic) was used from the factory and it doesn't absorb water even though water still accumulates in the system seperately rusting out the brake lines. Our went in our driveway but it could've been catastrophic at speed anywhere else. The car was at the dealership for 3 months waiting on new brake lines. Hyundai covered that under the recall but I would suggest having them flush your system and replacing the old fluid with a non-synthetic fluid. Also have them check your lines for signs of corrosion. My wife was backing out of the driveway and the pedal all of a sudden went straight to the floor. The car started having all these issues around 120k and it now has 145k....We want to keep it if all the little electrical gremlins don't start taking over. We never had any of these issues with our other 2 Older Lexuses, even over 210K miles no electrical or ac problems so we may have to go back to Toyota since we keep our cars a long time but kudos for Hyundai building a good value packed vehicle. Again-get your brake lines and fluid checked!

    I bought a 2011 3.6 dealer car with 5K on it and am still using it as my main car today with 203K miles. Replaced brakes once and am today changing struts for the first time. Car still runs flawlessly and has no rattles or other noise. Garaged for first 7 years. Leather has held up well although driver seat is beginning to show some wear. Left rear door speaker is blown and will soon be replaced. My only complaint from Day 1 is the proprietary NAV unit in the car. It cannot find any points of interest along the route or at destination, only from current location. I have no regrets at all with this car, nor with my wife's 2011 Genesis coupe with 100K on it. (Both sitting next to my Weber Genesis grill, but I digress!)

    I have a 2014 Genesis 3.8 with only 36,000 miles. Still has everything I want, but doesn’t have quite as many options and tech as yours does. The only complaint I have about it, which is kind of major, is even with less than 40k miles my rear suspension is already getting noisy and thuds a lot. Not sure if it’s the struts themselves or if a sway bar broke or something. Not super worried about it, but it is quite upsetting. Thinking of getting it checked out soon though

    how do you compare it with the 2014 kia cadenza? Also is the blind side monitoring standard as I didn't notice the button on the console?

    • @EdwardInTX
      @EdwardInTX  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aside from the additional interior padding, ride quality, rear wheel drive, and stronger engine this car has, I love the features of the Cadenza. I like the LCD panel in the instrument cluster, blind spot monitoring, and dual front cooled seats of the Cadenza. Definitely give both a drive.
      This 2012 Genesis surprisingly does not have blind spot monitor, which is really odd! I've come to live without it, and am looking forward to it in the G80 when I pick it up.

    I think I'm having the same A/C issue. On a hot day, it takes quite a few miles for the air to get cold. Problem is, if I wanted to take it to the dealership, it would blow cold by the time I get there. I wonder if I get a thermometer to stick in the vent I can film how long it takes for it to start blowing cold.

      1. Genesis original came out in 2009 under Hyundai (this body style shown in video is this size but year 2012, E class size)
      2. Hyundai released Equus (larger like A8/S class) in 2011

    I have the same exact car. Black/black, Performance & Tech packages. 3.8 engine. Wonderful car but several issues. The Lexicon sound system is overrated. I’d rate it one half step above a basic audio system and significantly below several other car audio systems I’ve owned. Midrange is thin, lacking body and overly bright, the bass is loose and the overall texture lacks harmonic richness and sounds like it’s driven by a cheap amplifier. I too have had the audio go dead only to come on again after leaving the engine off for some time. Power windows and side view mirrors also are prone to intermittently stop working. Serious electrical issues with this car. Other than that the overall engineering is outstanding. Bought mine 3 years ago for $20.5K at 28,000 miles. Now approaching 70K and other than the electrical issues it’s been a wonderful car.

    The warranty is for 3yrs or 36000 miles whatever comes first. It has a really clean tech package on the description but just knowing it had miles things may start to break. But is it worth 3900? I am thinking not at this moment. I will do some research . The car had two owners and doesn’t have a scratch inside or out. Owned in Florida. I like it better than the new Genesis, very classic car. I have the navy blue also !Thank you for your reply and I enjoyed the tutorials which I will use on the tech items! I am old so not very good with tech stuff ! Lorraine

I was wondering if it was worth the 3900 I paid to the dealer for the warranty .The car has 80,000 miles but has been maintained meticulously. The cost of the car plus warranty was a total of 15000. Can you provide any comment. I have 90days to cancel contract of warranty.

    • @EdwardInTX
      @EdwardInTX  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What does the warranty go up to? I still have the car, and it has 70k on it. The only big thing to consider is the AC compressor at $800, if that blows warm as I mentioned in the video. Other than that, still no big ticket repairs. Look at the other people here taking their cars up to 170k miles and more.

  • @pablocruiser209

    Not revving this engine up is a bad. The GDI engine can and will carbon up if you don't give it a good running on a regular basis. Don't take my word for it, look up direct injection issues. Don't be afraid to put your foot in it, as it is a necessary part of keeping the engine unclogged. The trade off in the GDIs is that you need more frequent oil changes. I rarely exceed 3k between changes. Thanks for the review!!!

      Shell premium ( for some reason) and 18mpg goes to 26. ( I have got three 4.6s and one is over 100,000 miles). Seafoam one bottle every three tankfuls. All go like a bat from hell. Forget 5.0 and younger - all junk. Or you can just let it carbon up and perhaps partially clean it out by gunning it. Semi synthetic every 7,500 miles.
