The Komodo's image is something special. (Im not even sure RED knows ...) The RAW + Global Shutter just makes a beautiful image. The resolution and dynamic range are just a bonus. I love mine, and I truly would not trade it for a Raptor or even an Alexa. That GS motion rendering just gives it such a unique organic look. It has its quirks, and far from perfect, but for the indie film maker, it is the camera I would recommend. RED is seems keep its priority on the Raptor, but I really think the Komodo (Or a big Komodo Brother) should be where they put their effort. But who am I? PS BP-915 batteries do work (only like $20), plus the 16mm RF Prime makes for an ultra-low weight rig. (Drone or cheaper gimbal work.) I think you can get the Komodo right at 3 lbs, maybe slightly below.
I have the c70 and the Komodo. The Komodo is better even though it has quirks. The Raw on the Komodo makes a big difference for recovery and safety and ease of grading
At what ISO did you shoot outside in the tent? Did you tested with the Ursa too? Cuz Ursa has different Legroom and headroom at different Iso. And with RED the full dynamic range is captured regardless of ISO choice, and ISO can be specified after the exposure. ISO only affects how the RAW data is interpreted. I think they have same dynamic range, but they behave differently. I'm trying to decide myself which to buy from those 2. And reading a lot.
When you talk about the Komodo having more dynamic range... On CineD, I've seen 12.5 stops for the Komodo and 12.6 for the Ursa G2. But I've already shot with the Komodo and loved it. I've never tried the Ursa but I have the Pocket 6K Pro. I also own the FX6 and FX3 at the moment, but I've never been really satisfied with the image quality compared to Blackmagic. So I thought I might sell the Sonys and get a Komodo (for commercials, music videos, gimbal shots-I like the modularity aspect) and an Ursa G2 (for documentaries and events). That being said I will miss the variable ND (from the FX6) and the full-frame sensor... But I hate the menus (FX3 and FX6), and I never really liked the image-it feels too "digital" compared to my Pocket 6K Pro and the Komodo that I rented for a music video. I found the image quality from the Komodo to be the best when I compare it to the cameras that I've tried (C200, C70, R5C, FX3, FX6, FX9, Pocket 6K Pro, GH6, EVA 1), but I do a lot of small documentaries and it's not really suited for that. So I was thinking of getting the Ursa for those projects.
Although the dynamic range on paper and in testing is probably close, if not the same same, I think a bit of it is also how the code deck handles the dynamic range as well as the range of colors! Obviously my argument isn’t super scientific, but I think putting them head to head. It was fairly obvious! That being said, I’ve never used the 12 K or some of the newer models!
Outrigger handle is very nice and I prefer it. But it does weigh almost as much as the Komodo itself. Look at the Mutiny remote record button. Works great.
Been considering the komodo. I really appreciate these past video presentations. They've been very helpful and informative. Thank you. On a side note I do believe we can continue to trust blackmagic. 🎬❤️
get the revolva from Kippertie, Keystone cage from Ignite Digi, their TB50 batteries adapter, it has 3 2-pin lemo outputs for focus motor, monitor, and transmitter, should You need more get the power breakout that mounts to their cage, You will have a total of 5 outputs...check them out man, those guys will take care of your business with a lot of great solutions that work and are here to stay, wasted a lot of time buying into other stuff. this build is ideal for real production environments when You need a robust rig that can go from handheld, shoulder, easyrig, tripod, dolly to ronin 2 real quick
My business partner and I are looking to get our first RED camera, and we've been bouncing back and forth between a V-Raptor and Komodo. Price is obviously a factor, but the Komodo *has* to be on it's way out soon because it's 3 years old at this point. So I think we're leaning towards the Raptor.
V-Raptor has the frame rates, BUT if you’re someone who needs speed and flexibility, I’d rather have 2 Komodo’s instead of 1 raptor! Like one is handheld/sticks & the other is a gimbal rig!
I own both, they complement each other well ! KOMODO is great for quality vs price, also you need to consider VV glass investment for the Raptor I have tokina vv which are made for covering that sensor
@@ConorHildebrandt vv red monstro , v-raptor are 46,5 mm diagonal so bigger than let’s say canon ff r5 or R5c so photography lens will vignette instead glass like tokina vv are designed for this sensors (if you try 24-70 canon should be ok past 35mm)
Buy camera just for brand name is so stupid. not all clients cares about your camera brand, when you have such a high-end client, just go and rent Arri, But such a client will be one in twenty, or more. Also remember Komodo is Reds crash cam and UMP12K Blackmagics best camera.
Well of course we didn’t but it just for the brand name…BUT we have had our clients even notice and take note of our RED. When they get quotes and invoices that are higher than those around with “lesser” known cameras, it does have a “perceived value” which is huge. It may be a crash cam, but it genuinely out-beats the URSA by miles. It’s Dynamic Range and roll off is absolutely insane
The more i learn about Komodoo the more ai realize that the end product ends up being TOO sharp when projected and looks its best on a apple monitor......, I make narrative work so I don't appreciate how commercial videographers are controlling the narrative for cinema cameras. videography and cinema are two very different things. I have seen 5 films shot on red by indie creators at a recent film festivals.Wehn projected they all looked like VERY sharp video...., If you are a narrative creator Red are not worth the extra cost imo. My next camera body will be an older alexa which beats everything out there in the $ 10k range. Buying a red doesn't make mich sense these days when renting is just as good UNLESS you shoot every day or need to get usedto the camera, just not good business to buy a cinema camera these days...,
@@CameronGallagher ow! what was the issue? I came across a number of people who had issues with Red randomly shutting down during recording or just cutting off recording so I have avoided them. (I had enough issues back in the day trying to support Apple devices for videographers)
The sensor “died” with these awful pink lines all over the sensor! Old RED cameras like the Epic definitely had those issues, but so far this thing has been a tank! I think the new software and DSMC3 environment is much better
Nothing beats a RED in terms of color...but the Komodo is on the lower end of their spectrum and quite flat. There are also a ton of quirks with it that make it slow to work with unfortunately. Given the high cost of all its ecosystem, I think these cameras will depreciate quickly in value as newer options come out in 2023. Again I love RED, but a lot of the owners of this camera will end up being bag holders.
😂😂 Red Cameras .. for the filmmakers who think more contrast and less saturation magically makes things "cinematic" .. lol 😂 Sony FX6 wayyyyyyy better plus ready to shoot out the box
You mistaken amateur filmmakers with the actual production process of filmmaking. All cameras including the one you mentioned will creates hot garbage. The way the film looks has more to do with the material in the hands of the colourist and grading team than the camera. They are tools and it's up to you what you do with them.
Sony FX6 is not better..I own one and rented the Komodo for a a music video. It’s not even in the same league, I don’t know what the hell you smoked but it looks strong 😅
awesome video, I'm glad I found your channel, thanks for sharing.

Check out the Mutiny battery i/o - gives amp reading w power and extra dtap outs -- PLUS a trigger on top of the unit.
Also, you should buy the Komodo Link Adapter for the Komodo as well. I hesitated at first but I’m glad I brought it.

I’ve gotten clients walking around with my RED. Nobody is buying a RED just cause of the name. It’s a good camera with a known name.
I have both, C70 and Red Komodo. Komodo is hands down better. Although C70 is easier to use
Aren't red komodo and BM dynamic range basically the same though? More or less
Although they “claim” to be close at around 12.5 or so but I would say it’s about a stop off, with the RED edging it out!
You don’t use hight fps since you don’t use the Ursa 12k.

16bit raw? But everywhere it says it’s 12bit uncompressed red code raw
R3D has a 16bit wrapper but the Analog to Digital converter is 12bit . I’d call that 12bit raw ?? 🤷♂️
ummmm, get a free fix from BM. I know in Aus it would still be considered under warranty.
Must be different in the US, as they quoted me roughly $2,400+
