    There is a misconception I hear around a lot that older Film cameras don't have rolling shutter. They are mechanical and have a rotating wheel. So it gives a very similar rolling shutter effect but with a different pattern shape. It's more of a radial delay. Great review!!

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Very true. Apart from Alexa and V-Raptor’s readout speeds, the GS of the Komodo exposing the entire frame at once is the closest (at this price point) to film capture being that it closer resembles image exposing process of the mechanical/rotary shutter than a rolling shutter would on a modern CMOS sensor like on a mirrorless camera. Certainly not the same but for a passing comment, it gets the point across(ish). Haha. Thanks for dropping by and commenting!

    • @Cinnovations
      @Cinnovations ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the best way to compare would be at a long focal length to accentuate the jello. The only time I could recall it being annoying was when I was shooting macro on an x-t3 a few years ago. Even with stabilization it was very unpleasant.

    • @contentm3893
      @contentm3893 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah but I'm not buying that. older film cameras don't have characteristics of rolling shutter. Feel free to post samples.

      @@contentm3893 they do have the characteristics of a rotating shutter and it looks similar to good rolling shutter performance. I literally just saw it in a movie less than an hour ago.

    Great video mate! My boss and I primarily use the entire armada of blackmagic cameras, but he bought a komodo this time last year. At first we both absolutely detested it, but 12 months later and we're both absolutely loving it. This camera, while being a piece of shit at times (touch screen, unsupported battery issues etc), creates an incredible image. You're bang on about the motion out of the camera too. Just did a 2 day shoot for a gym and we found ourselves fighting over who would be using the komodo. The poor ursa was sidelined 🤣

    The more I watch experiential based reviews like this the more I have my sites set on getting one in the future. I originally wanted one for the global shutter, as well as RF lens integration as I shot on canon. However I have since switced to Fujifilm, with an X-H2s and I really like 6k footage. I feel that the red could be used in conjuntion with such a camera, if needed and lenses could be adapted well without any or just minor aspect/focal length changes. And with Davinci the shots from the R3D RAW could be easily matched with ProRes RAW or even ProRes HQ out of the X-H2s. . Thanks for sharing the real world experiences and some of the short comings! Still I think a small price to pay for the price point of a Komodo.

    • @Cinnovations
      @Cinnovations ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're two of the most similar cameras right now IMO. If I wanted a B cam thats not Red, I'd go for the XH2s or maybe a pocket 6k. But I'm telling you right now, even in ProRes, the XH2s performs as good as the komodo and p6k. Check out CineD's test, it's amazing how far Fuji has come. IQ is top notch in the sub $10k market. I have an XT3 and love fuji, and this took me by surprise.

    Was that Ronin on the tactical part? If so that's so cool you got to work with him.
    Really nice looking footage. Love the look of the Komodo. I don't work in camera department usually (G&E gang), but from what I see it's really becoming a B or C cam staple of a lot of different productions. I did operate it a few months ago on a chase vehicle. It was mounted on a russian arm and in that case the global shutter really seemed to help. Also shot a couple projects with the v raptor, and the komodo seems to match that really well which is a plus.

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      G&E gang! Yup, I work with Rōnin Tactics quite a bit. For smaller companies/owner ops, the Komodo has become a popular A-cam but on larger productions, like you said, it is becoming the go-to b or c cam for many projects since it can cut so well with many different cameras and has that global shutter. hey Tyler, nice review, thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences. Lots of beautiful footage too!
    I wanted to ask you about your run and gun experience with mostly manual focus. These shots of tactical team looked very nice, I wonder if you just learn to live with worse hit/miss ratio or with practice its possible for solo shooter to pull focus good enough for most dynamic situations. I shoot extreme sports and most of my shots are not planned or rehearsed in any way, and I've spent my whole life on sony cameras where autofocus is so good I'm using it 95% of the time, so despite being really drawn to the flexibility in post and that incredible motion cadence of global shutter I'm just worried that I'd simply miss a lot of shots
    And small bonus question - weren't you tempted to swap A7sIII for R5 to utilise same lenses?

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just simply learned to never miss focus. Simple. LOL JUST KIDDING. For fast-paced stuff, getting critical focus can be tough, and I almost never have the lens wide open for that reason. Practicing manual focus on Sony can be hard (with native lenses) because it is focus by wire, but if you have access to a manual focus lens, just start practicing is my best advice. Sony and Canon have amazing AF, and if you are used to that, the KOMODO will definitely be a step backwards for you in terms of AF. I see a lot of people purchase a komodo because it is a RED and it is priced more affordably than other REDs, but they end up selling it because it just doesn't fit their workflow. Rent it first to see if you like it or not.
      Bonus answer - I actually own an R5 as well that I use primarily for stills. Both cameras do great, but I prefer the Slog3 gamma from the Sony for video.

  • @ryansulak

    im halfway through the video, so you may cover this, but now that you've used that camera for this long, could you see it being used as a travel camera for a solo-operator? in more of a run and gun doc situation abroad? I got an fx3 for that reason but something keeps drawing me to the ergonomics and footage of the Komodo, thanks Tyler

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  ปีที่แล้ว

      It can certainly be used for that as long as you are comfortable not relying on AF (unless they improve it) and can manage the larger file sizes from redcode raw. The Fx3 or maybe C70 is still probably a better travel work, but the KOMODO is still a fantastic option for that as well.

    If only RED image wouldn't look so digital, this would be the perfect camera. Well, until then, I'll probably have to stick with Canon since it's the closest thing to Alexa, which in turn has the perfect image aesthetic, closer to film. I had Scarlet-X, Epic-X, and Epic Dragon and moved away from RED for this exact reason. They improved with newer cameras, but the image is still distinctly "digitally RED." What is this SDI issue you sort of alluded to?

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  ปีที่แล้ว

      Since it has a 12G SDI out, it is more susceptible to being damaged if the SDI accessories aren’t properly grounded. People make a way bigger deal about it than necessary

      @@TylerEdwards ohhhh, THAT conversion. Yeah, from what I understand the whole grounding issue is a pretty common one no matter what camera one uses.

      You wouldn’t believe it, but I made a video and talked about why in that video!

    I prefer my RED Raven 120fps

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  ปีที่แล้ว

      That would make sense since it shoots 120fps at a higher resolution than komodo

    You might want to try scripts and a teleprompter for your videos if you don’t already do that. It can help with some of the filler words like, “kinda” that make you sound unsure. I would also recommend you review your body language. Crossing your arms and squirming around makes you look like you’re uncomfortable to the viewer. Just my 2 pennies. Good content over all though.

      Ya I sound pretty dumb hahaha. I did script this video but didn't have a prompter. I've used a prompter in the past and I sound like an idiot reading as well. There's no hope for me LOL. and to be fair for this video, I was super uncomfortable because I've been running on about 3-4 hours of sleep #newdad hahaha

      Noooo, bad advice! Teleprompters are a sure way to sound bland and corporate. I'll take personable and imperfect over the ubiquitous youtube overconfident unrealistically articulate script reader any day. Loved this!!

    I like the camera but I would never support this company.

    Let's be honest that camera is overhyped to death. You can match any serious cameras to the red komodo.
