Spring Hive Inspections! What to look for and when to add supers

After a rough winter of winds over 100mph and constant rain, it's a worrying time for the bees! So it's a huge relief when your hives are okay and the bees are building nicely. This Video is of a quick spring hive inspection, taking advantage of the nice warm weather in late March. We don't usually do inspections this early, so always make sure the weather is good and warm enough to open the hive in early spring.

Do you scrap off the stuff on top of the bars and under the top cover so that the cover fits on tightly? Or is there some other reason? Thanks for such great videos!

Hi and thank you for your nice comment. Scrapping the wax of the top bars and crown boards just helps with fitting and that you don’t squish more bees. They will more than likely make more brace comb, it’s just helping to clean it up for your ease. 🐝
