I would like to see a What happened to Series on guys like Mike Buff, R.L Osborne, Stu Thomson, Greg Hill...I actually got to see Mike Buff and Greg Romano(?) do a BMX Action freestyle demo at Knott's Berry Farm in Ca. in '82/'83. It was Rad.😅(I haven't used that word in years!!!)
Perry Kramer was my mentor in BMX and one of my dearest friends. He still works in the bike industry and is an outside sales rep for several brands. I get to see him every couple of weeks.
Tragic story. My adolescent years were BMX. I loved it. I remember idolizing Stu Thomson. Doing races. Getting trophies here and there. Getting into expert class and racing against Diamond Back Doug Davis. Getting smoked. Haha. Got into surfing heavily. Until spine issues. Now. Back on mountain bike. And loving it. Also, as a longtime UPS worker. I’ve seen quite a few SE bike cartons go through my building. And recently. Sorry to hear about Scott’s demise. I didn’t know him personally. He helped make BMX great.
You do a great job with these, Mossie, and fascinating to think that a full half-century since the Yamaha Gold Cup with Scot at the helm, that greatest of all BMX spectacles--a BMX race in the same SoCal sports stadium as the original Superbowls of Motocross--was one by Stu Thompson on a Schwinn Sting-Ray as true BMX bikes had not quite reached the showroom floors of bicycle shops. Scot was right up there with Evel Knievel in giving us an alternative to ball sports. And so epic that thousands of adults joined him in giving kids great bikes to ride every single day and all those local races to show off their speedy chops. 😀
I appreciate the kind words! BMX was such a a huge part of my childhood that it still blows my mind that the generation before me were actually inventing it.
He was such a nice guy - i met him about 4 times and it was always like seeing an old friend , he just made it feel that way . i went to is funeral along with many many others , it was standing room only in the church and a number of us were wearing SE jerseys , sad he's no longer with us but he gave so much to BMX and was a great person to know - we're lucky to have known him
Thanks for telling the other story of OM. I grew up loving BMX, working in an old school Schwinn shop and to this day cherishing my friends that I hold as family from this era of my life. The solid work ethic of Scot Breithaupt , Bob Haro and Bob Osborne along with thier enduring creativity has influenced so much of my daily vision. And great channel BTW.
Wasn't expecting that sad twist at the end man. SB was such a name to our BMX crew in Dublin in the early to late '80s. His name was all over the mags of the day too. Great and respectful video.
Its sad he passed away from the same thing that he was trying to keep kids away from when he started his BMX meetings in the 70s . My Dad was the Australian/Brisbane repairer for his bikes as my Dad built Bmx bikes here in Australia . At 4.50min on your video they were at the Windsor bmx track in Brisbane . Its great SE is still going today and Todd the manager has done a amazing job of keeping the name out there .
I'm friends with both Todd & Scot Jr, as he's a local now where I live, & I'm active in our local bike scene & a 49yo BMXer myself, he's getting ready to rebuild 1 of his Dad's bike, & use to ride on group rides, that'll be epic! 💯
Thank You for making these 2 videos. Very sad ending. I, a road weeny, found myself online searching for vintage SE race equipment while watching part 2.
Years ago I found an original Quadangle frame in an absolute pile of shit at a local swap meet. Over time I came know Scot because he was "selling" rare SE parts that he didn't make good on at least with me. Every once in a while I would get a call from him when he was in a bind and wire him money though I knew I was enabling. Coincidentally I happened to be driving through Indio the day he died...wish I could have done more. He is survived by looptail Quad, 2 '85 1/2 PK Rippers and a '95 OM Flyer.
It is so hard to see and be in lives like this. I have had to let go of friends who choose to not stop. Be there for them but cannot let them take me down as well. Thanks
Fascinating story mate. I rode a P.K. Ripper & a Quadangle back in the day, but i have never heard this story. Back then this type of news did not likely make it to Australia. Thanks for the research & great story telling.
These are some of my favorite videos period! The research & time you taken to make these are appreciated more than you know Mossie thanks for doing it! I'd love to see one done on Skyway, Retrotec, Dyno, or Boss in the future should you feel up to it 😉
I never knew the story of the OM. Thank you. I've been a life long SE rider, and my son raced SE's in the mid 2000's. I appreciate the content you're putting out there. Thank you!
Great videos! Enjoy going down memory lane. I rode a Hutch back in the 80’s. I would like see a video about Hutch. Oh and I still have my Hutch pro racer.
Supercross Bmx would be a rad company to do. Bill Ryan first started Hi-Tech when he was a young teen. Then he started Supercross Bmx in 1989 and is still the main man behind it all after 35 years. Bill used to work and ride for SE Racing and knew Scot well. Also what Todd Lyons has done with SE recently is amazing the company has blown up insanely and i know Scot is smiling seeing what Todd has done with the company. RIP SCOT.
Always wanted a P K Ripper when i was a kid, loved my floval flyer later in life, wanted an OM flyer when i seen them, now i want one even more since i am old man...
How about one on Speed Unlimited and Thruster bikes owned by Slammin’ Sammy Miller in New Jersey in the late 70s and eighties. Riders were Timmy Judge, Ferde’ Garcia. They also built the fastest jet car called Vanishing Point. Great bikes. I think Hutch may have helped them build some bikes.
Great vid (though a painfully sad ending). Future video idea: Mike Rust, the builder from Crested Butte/Salida that was murdered. The Rider and Wolf is a great doc about him, but I’d love a thorough update now that his killer was caught. I also am under the impression (just from personal observation) that some of the original geometry designs, like his “Shorty”, we’re totally copped by some other builders (that I won’t name because I’m not sure it’s true) of the era that became big.
The Jay Adams of BMX..... Trivia: who is the Legend cohosting the 1st televised BMX race @ 0:55 with him ... (I know exactly who it is) great guy and would go on to be a Legendary Announcer!
Oh wow, never knew that about him. I thought he was still around somewhere enjoying his wealth and retirement. Such a sad story. Which reminds me, so many homeless people are addicts, not just some lazy people.
Great Piece RIP Jersey boy in my youth in the late eighties SE was a cut above strictly for badass kids no posers how still have my thruster tri power Jersey original had a PK sold it stupid on my part
Another personality where you just have to wonder if the drugs were cause or effect? Like, "what would 17 year old me have become with all the coke I could handle?" As is, I had my own farm at 23 with only alcohol, weed, and caffeine to go along with a strong body, obsessive personality and lack of sleep. 😂
What's up buddy, it's Shae, I just seen this & had to check it out, really wish bmx would start some Charity in his honor, a lot of BMXer's suffer addiction from getting hurt, & doctors pushing pills on us, not to mention we're the "Latchkey Generation" most of us didn't have proper upbringing, definitely to today's standards, & raised ourselves sadly, & most people in the 70s/80s turned to drugs & gangs....😢
I thank all of you for the support. What company or history within the bicycle world would you all like to see next??
I would like to see a What happened to Series on guys like Mike Buff, R.L Osborne, Stu Thomson, Greg Hill...I actually got to see Mike Buff and Greg Romano(?) do a BMX Action freestyle demo at Knott's Berry Farm in Ca. in '82/'83. It was Rad.😅(I haven't used that word in years!!!)
Speed Unlimited and its Thruster bikes.
VORIS DIXON CYCLES ( VDC)
Race Inc BMX
CycleCraft, MCS, HoleShot
I still have my PK Ripper from 82.
Cool bike..even cooler that you still have it!
Perry Kramer was

Just seen the SE video choked me up so sad 💔💔RIP Scott

I’d love to have one
My brother had one. Very cool bike. None like it!

For those of us that cannot seem to get out of their own way. Great take for so many. 🚲

I really appreciate that. I have skyway on the list and just added the others. Thanks for the suggestions!

Thank you for sharing your gifts Scot...RIP
Word. Great job. I’ve watched literally all of your videos.
I appreciate that!
A life well lived scott ❤I salute you sir ,you cramed a lot in and helped create this fantastic sport 😂
Always wanted a P K Ripper when i was a kid, loved my floval flyer later in life, wanted an OM flyer when i seen them, now i want one even more since i am old man...
These stories are great, thankyou
😢❤ this is so sad. His self destructive habits and his battle with addiction make me think of my dad.

Owned both a Quadangle and a PK.
Really great two part episode on Scot and SE Racing. So glad the Quadangle and “P.K. Ripper” live on. RIP OM. 🙏🏼
OM Flyer is still made as well
Addiction is (too often) a killer! SE was a great and advanced brand, too bad about Scot's demise. Sad, sad story.

That is a great suggestion! I just added it to the list. I completely missed that they caught the guy and have now been reading about it non stop 😅
I'd enjoy watching that!! & I've watch others!
The Jay Adams of BMX.....
Trivia: who is the Legend cohosting the 1st televised BMX race @ 0:55 with him ...
(I know exactly who it is) great guy and would go on to be a Legendary Announcer!
What if, instead of being treated as a criminal, he was just treated?
USA. Home of the free and over a quarter of the worlds prison population.
100%, he battled with childhood trauma and mental health issues. Therapy wasn't an option back then 😢
85 was an incredibly tough year for him. It's the year his dad died, and he had slipped into addiction leading up to it.
The Joe kid movie is awesome
Good video! It's Scot Bright-hopped.
Very close, Bright-Hop, unless you say it in German, the it's Bright-Howpt 😉
Oh wow, never knew that about him. I thought he was still around somewhere enjoying his wealth and retirement. Such a sad story. Which reminds me, so many homeless people are addicts, not just some lazy people.
Great Piece RIP Jersey boy in my youth in the late eighties SE was a cut above strictly for badass kids no posers how still have my thruster tri power Jersey original had a PK sold it stupid on my part
These are great but SSsssslingSSssshot! Do a Slingshot Doc
CW would be one of the companies most people don't know much about.
What a terribly sad lonely ending for a man who's ideas helped so many people and brought so many families together.😢
Such a sad end 😢
BMX Sorted me out and Iam 55yrs old 😮
Another personality where you just have to wonder if the drugs were cause or effect? Like, "what would 17 year old me have become with all the coke I could handle?"

CLUTCH!
a few weeks before he died, i sent him a few hundred $. he was supposed to send some original drawings or something.
Nice Shirt..
If you ever want to do a follow up video, I can fill in all the gaps.
Did you literally say Ob-SCORE??? LOL It's Ob-SCURE! like Cure!!! SMH,
You KILL me with your evisceration of words! LOLOL
Was he Dirtmaster?
Not the founder, but co-owner at one point. Mike Devitt, his business partner at SE started Dirt Master.
What drug was he using when he overdosed
If you watch the documentary - you'll hear how to pronounce is name correctly
Pk ripper the greatest ever bmx bicycle
LOL Murray
Cocaine is a helluva drug
BRITE HOPT
Maybe if he got medical care instead of prison.
His choices killed him.
You could have learned to pronounce his name correctly
It's a tough one! I've met like 2 people in my life that pronounced it right the first time.
who gave you permission to wear that shirt?
sounds like a typical american story
