I asked my Dad for a Hutch Trick Star frame & fork on my 14th birthday. So my birthday finally comes & my Dad told me to go down the basement where I found a brand new chrome Hutch Trick Star frame & fork with a red bow on it. All my friends thought I was crazy because I only got the frame & fork but in a very short time I had it all put together with parts off my nickel plated Mongoose & never looked back. I was hanging out on the corner with some friends & an old friend of mine picked up my bike & rode away with it. He was so high that when he finally came back he didn’t have my bike. I went mental & screamed “where’s my bike?” & he had no clue. It had been days when finally my Dad asked where my bike was & I told him the story. We went immediately to the “friend’s” house where his Mom had no clue where he was. That friend finally got so burnt out that he was put away from his drug abuse. No more bike for me but now I ride Harley Davidson & still to this day I miss my old Trick Star
Whoa! Dang, I can only imagine how much it must have sucked to have that guy rip off your bike. Happy to hear that you’re still enjoying riding on your Harley, but yeah, I would miss that Trick Star too! 🥲
Unfortunately dude sold that for drugs. I had a Gt Mach1 and a haro sport stolen and sold for drugs. Oddly enough these bikes plus yours is still out there. Hopefully one day they’ll resurface.
BMX was so big in the 80s. I remember a kid riding a Redline on my local track. Wether it was him or the bike? He was fast!! I was just a poor kid riding a Huffy.
Just curious, does the small tube that connects the top tube to the head tube, actually passes tru the down tube, or is a two piece made to look like a single piece.
Great video however I’d like to add that hutch was born from profile. The hutch pro racer was designed by profile racing and gifted to Richard for his birthday. The pro racer was a profile racing champ pro with a couple design changes. The drilled out hutch seat stay bridge was designed by Corey alley. They also made the cranks for hutch, haro and gt.
Awesome! Thanks so much for sharing those additional insights. I wanted to go more in depth on Hutch history, but I was trying to keep the video from getting too long. Hmm… maybe a deeper dive into Hutch history with the Profile partnership could be a good topic for a future video. 😎
@@TheNostalgicNeighborhoodYa I figured, the video was about the trick star too. I think another video on the hutch pro racer would be awesome though! Or even videos about woody, special k, and the rest of the pro team.
Honestly, I didn't know Hutch existed when I was growing up. I only knew of Mongoose, Diamondback, Redline, Skyway, Huffy, and Murray! I only had a Huffy Space Invaders bike i wish I still had.
Wow, it’s hard to imagine knowing all those brands and not ever hearing about Hutch. But they were so expensive that not too many regular kids had one. So while they were hard to miss in the magazines, most kids didn’t see too many out in the wild. That Huffy Space Invader was a cool bike!!!
Hello I need some help I didn’t not realize how much the Bmx market changed …. Im 50yrs old stuck with a lot of questions . How can I contact you sir ??
i get a serious 4130 looking at that pink trickstat frame ; thats hot . lol . i had only one hutch , and i loved it , but my gt pro racer fit me better. a mafia kid on my block , his pop bought him the black w all gold anodised top racer by hutch , whisch was the lightest on the market at the time - it was ridiculously light and FAST and on the first day out, punks were trying steal it from him and the father found out and kicked the shit out of em right in the street . mid eighties , queens nyc
🤣 Whoa… that’s crazy about the mafia kid and his bike. I’ve heard so many stories about cool bikes getting stolen. It’s fun to hear a story where the cops thieves didn’t get away with it 🙌
In the eighties I had 3 Hutch Trick Star and each way different. The original one, another one without the frame stand and peg stand and a Hutch Trick Star 2. The 2nd one with out the frame and peg stand I bought used and was way before they made the street version. How did I get this used? Long story short.... Living in Maryland where Hutches where made at the time someone asked for a special one and years later they sold it and I finally bought for 40 bucks! Where is it now? Ask the person who stoled it from me! Wish I had Iphones back then to take a picture. Now I find it interesting that I used that modified Trick Star for street and no brakes. Guess what? They made one 20 years later like that! I still want the street one! My friend worked at a bike shop knew the owner of Hutch and when Hutch was declining he bought was he said the last Trick Star. It was made different. From what I recall that the Hutch rear brake bar was now a tube. Where did that last one go? Don't know! Being in Maryland was a ton of Hutch Trick Stars!
I have hutch tim judge white redline rl 22 haro master blue and grey forks are chrome haro master with bash guard was red and chrome now just chrome and and SE quad angle white got them In The 80s when I was a teenager and lots of other components skyway tuff 2s graphite with gold gonna get tires and ride
The major flaw with 1st gen freestyle bikes is they were for the most part made from a race frame design perspective. As freestyle advanced, tricks progressed, the demands in equipment went through the roof…the original frames started to fail. In my opinion, resilience and geometry were the end for 1st gen frames.
I had a Pro Raider that I’d traded an ‘85 PK Ripper for, that I had left at my dad’s house, only to return the following summer of 1991 to find my stepmother had sold it at a garage sale for $25. I’m still pissed about that.
The reproduction of the 80s versions are sold out. But the new school ones should be coming later this year. They did a preorder for them, but said they’ll have some additional ones to purchase then. Best way to keep up is to follow the official Hutch facebook page or Instagram account 👍
I don’t know what year they peaked in popularity, probably 1984 to 1986. If you were into it much after that, they weren’t as prominent in the magazines, and were done by 1992.
I’m thinking of getting a hutch trickstar 20” from the site but they only have chrome available at the moment. And it doesn’t look like they come with the standing platform in the back you know the bear trap grips in the back. Or the frame standers on the forks? Anyone know why? Ty. Hutch got back to me, said the new 2024 trickstar will NOT come with them. They said it’s new geometry from people who still like to ride in 2024. Lol BS. I was like who cares they looked bitchin. Whatever
I hear you, but I totally get that for modern riders, removing those features and just relying on regular pegs is totally the way to go. It sucks for nostalgic reasons to see them gone, but a necessary evil for the goal of competing with contemporary bikes.
We used to call them Trick Bags because anyone who bought one new got duped. It was Cooks Bros and JMC at that price point. Cant argue with the Hutch Beartraps though.
the really big deal on this frame was the 75 deg head angle. the later expert and pro racer also had 75 deg angles and i remember how crappy and lethargic all other bikes felt in comparison, especially GT which i believe were still stuck at 72 deg. the thick dropouts also made it to the judge frame and fork
I really expected these bikes to cost way more. If a few grand is not in the budget for a bmx bike, don’t buy a boat. Or get your pilots license. Hell, I collect high on Microtech knives on the side and those are $8k and up. Vintage bikes and boards are pretty cheap (for now) compared to even people who collect sneakers.
The issue at Kastan was that : made in USA hand made not production line like My friend JDB Taiwan , and they were grumpy crazy about details in Texas headquarters . Get the facts
Facts? My understanding is that the Kastan RL-20ii's were made in Mexico, not the USA. Regardless of any grumpiness in the headquarters, the buyers were frustrated by the repeated delays, repeated missed promises, and terrible communication from Dom... over the course of 2-3 years. I watched it unfold over on the BMX Museum... all 783 pages before the thread was closed. 🍿 🤣 bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=904239&p=1
Thanks for chiming in. I thought I got the facts right... unless you don't trust Woody Itson. 🤷🏼 What I said is from Woody himself, as he shared in a BMX Hall of Fame video post. Here's a quote from Woody over on the 23Mag website, "If you look at the first prototype type frames me and Buff rode, that's what "they came up with" and I was bummed with it and told Hutch that's not what I asked for. When you see the production version of the Trick Star, that's what I came up with with the help of an engineer at Hutch. I spent a lot of time on the phone with people at Hutch and flew out there almost once a month in the early years. I also came up with the name Trick Star. That is how it went down. If you check all the earliest photo's from the earliest magazines it backs up what I'm saying 100%. The engineers I dealt with at Hutch were great people and very supportive and without them there would have been no Trick Star. However, without me, you wouldn't have the Trick Star you know today."
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I know you're not alone in that sentiment. Not trying to convince you to change your mind, but I do wonder if John Buuljens's involvement with the brand will turn things around for a lot of guys.
So why is that I hear? You're saying something in a conversation but you won't explain why? Why won't you touch a new hutch? They're actually stronger and made better in my opinion than the old ones, even though the old ones will always be the original ones
@@jasontomica8938 calm down boomer fan boy. If im going to pay american prices i want amerian made. I would also expect better chrome and hand hand welding. Its hutch in name only.

I remember the candy apple red Hutch bikes. Had too get a new BSD Safari frame in candy apple red 🤙🏻 the 80’s were great! My first “real” Bmx bike was a 84”-85” Redline 500A series 3. Loved that bike. Though the new stuff blows the old technology away. Awesome stuff 🤙🏻
Yes!!! Candy apple red is such a beautiful color!!! 🤩 Redline 509A 3… so classic 🙌. And it’s awesome you have a new BSD frame too. Hope you’re loving it 👍
@@TheNostalgicNeighborhood Thanks. I am enjoying it much 👍🏻
I won a Trick Star frame and fork from Freestylin' Magazine back in '85... and as a kid in rural New Hampshire in the mid 80's, I definitely didn't get the pink vibe, but built it out all the same. Was a great experience all the way around. Gave it to my nephew in the early to mid 90s, and don't know what happened from there.... crazy to see how much they are going for now though. Thanks for the video and the trip down memory lane. Stay well
Wow!!! I can only imagine your excitement when you found out that you won. 🤯 Thanks so much for watching and commenting. 👊
Edits are solid👊🏼 So stoked on this series...I didn't remember them being double the price of a GT as a kid...that's crazy. Great info as always.
Thanks for the feedback on the edits. I had a lot of fun making this video. Yeah, and the GT’s weren’t cheap either. I eventually was able to get a Dyno D-Tour because it was about $100 cheaper than a Pro Performer. A Trick Star was the pipe dream of my pipe dreams 🤣
@@TheNostalgicNeighborhood I couldn't afford either one when I was a kid. I saved my paper route and birthday money to buy a pink Leader with white mags. It looked sweet and worked well but it wasn't a Dyno, GT, Haro, Hutch, Kuwahara, etc... I bought an Odyssey Drainpipe seat post which was too small so I used a sleeve and it would still slip a bit...especially when I was doubling lol. I have a '99 Dyno Compe now (with Reissue Pretzel Bars) but it's no '87 Detour🙄
@@80slove I love stories about kids being resourceful, making the most of what they had… like figuring out how to make a drain pipe seat post fit. Good memories!!!
@@TheNostalgicNeighborhood Good memories indeed!
I have the 2015 Hutch Trick Star !!!! Yeah, Baby !!!! 😁😁😁😁😁😁
Right on!!!!
what a killer story!! I was just telling another channel about how I got my lavender trickstars from hutch's newer production shop on ponca st I believe they were out farther in Pasadena off Richie hwy but pretty sure was right up from fells point. it was almost 40 years ago but mine was my treasure. couldn't afford the gold and chrome one. totally best bike ever had!! great video my friend! cheers
🙌 How cool that you got yours directly from the Hutch shop 🤯 Such a classic bike, and lavender was 🔥
I can’t wait for John Buultjens New & improved modern Trickstar. His Haro Lineage is top notch
💯 I totally agree. I’m sure they’re gonna be rad!!!! 🙌
When do you think it will come out?
@@midvalleymexicans4167 Buultjens said he’s going to Taiwan early March to see the production samples. If all is well, I don’t know how soon they would start production. My guess, and this is only a guess, is they’d start production in a month or two and maybe have them done by end of summer. And then a month or two to get them shipped to the US warehouse. So if I had to bet, I’d put my money around October. All speculation. Hopefully Buultjens will provide some updates after his trip.
First off great video! I still have my Trickstar from 1985 all chrome I paid $500 for it I got it from a friend who didn’t like it so I jumped on the deal 😊 I’m think of possibly selling it in the near future as my kids don’t want it 😢
Too bad your kids aren’t interested, but that $500 years going to give you some amazing ROI. 🥳
I still have my OG trick star. All that remains is the frame and forks but it's still cool that I've managed to hang on to it. I have a small collection of bikes. After the hutch faze I got into HARO and stayed with them. That and SE. SE is probably my most favorite bikes of all time. I've got a 90s area PKRIPPER. I would love to have a Quadangle again.
Definitely cool that you managed to hang on to the Trick Star frame set 🤯 Haro’s are rad. Seems the most popular for old school guys who are still riding. ❤️
Man this brings back good memories. The prices killed freestyle!
Thanks for watching and leaving feedback. Yeah, these were pretty pricey
Ain't that the truth. Still is killing it!! Lol. Cheaper product for way more cash.
Great video as always. A chrome trickstar is my holy grail I will eventually build in honor of my brother who will be gone 1 year the 19th of this month because he was going to build one…
I asked him how did you know they were expensive bikes back then as it was before my time. He said because nobody had one lol
Dude, so sorry to hear about the loss of your brother. But what a cool way to honor him by building the bike he was going to build. Amazing ❤️🙌
@@TheNostalgicNeighborhood I really appreciate it. He had 3 grails he’s was working on. Maui blue world tour which he got. 86 white master was next and was actually found one and was going to buy the week of his passing but the chrome hutch trick star was the big deal for him. Luckily i remember every single thing he wanted down to the grips and chain. I word tour disappeared strangely… family 🤦♂️.
I still have my TIM JUDGE frame and fork 1985 its a bike with all the parts i wanted.. Never give it up with saving all my allowance and doing odd jobs for family. its a piece of me ...
Amazing. I love it 🙌💥💥💥
Still have my 1986 Trick Star. I need to install some new parts though as the the headset is a bit loose. Got some replacement mags a few years back but other than that, it's still a great bike. A few dents and dings but baby blue as ever.
That’s so awesome 🙌 Gotta admit I would have been envious of you back in the day, and stoked for you that you still have it today. 👊
Just found out there is a huge collection of old BMX bikes just about 10 minutes from me in Richmond, VA at Powers BMX - Look up Powers BMX Museum Tour - owner is Chad Powers. I am stoked and going to visit soon. Maybe I’ll take my Trick Star over for fun.
@@EPHONIC How cool!!!! I lived in the Richmond area for a couple years in high school (Midlothian). I was more into skateboarding then. Totally remember everyone loving 17th St. Surf shot t-shirts back in the day. But yeah, going to see that BMX collection sounds awesome!!!!
Nice video man full of knowledge. Those were definitely rad bikes! I had to scoop up an 18 Haro Master lineage
Thanks. 🙌 Those Haro Lineage bikes are so rad!!!
Hutch should include Z-Rims 48 spoke with the New Hutch Trick Star in 2024 or 2025 !!!!! That would be SICK !!!!!!
Yeah, that would be awesome. Can’t wait to see how they spec out the parts package for these!
@@TheNostalgicNeighborhood great content & appreciate your channel
Unfortunately dude sold that for drugs. I had a Gt Mach1 and a haro sport stolen and sold for drugs. Oddly enough these bikes plus yours is still out there. Hopefully one day they’ll resurface.
Great content Matt, I’m defiantly interested in the new version TrickStar 21’ frame set as a possible project build. 🎯🙌🏽😎
Ok, so they are releasing a 26” frame and fork set…cool, I’ll be on the look out. Keep up the good videos, I’m learning a lot.
Right on. Thanks!!! 🙏
BMX was so big in the 80s. I remember a kid riding a Redline on my local track. Wether it was him or the bike? He was fast!! I was just a poor kid riding a Huffy.
Such great memories from the 80s. I was riding a Huffy too .
I had the exact frame and fork build princess pink back in the day 👍🏼. Never knew kinetic skate park was in St Charles a stone throw away
Princess pink 🤣 That’s awesome! If you’re with a stone’s throw the Kinetic park is totally worth a visit
Just curious, does the small tube that connects the top tube to the head tube, actually passes tru the down tube, or is a two piece made to look like a single piece.
I’m pretty sure it’s one piece that passes through.
The TrickStar was a POS for vert. It was a flatland bike. (pro BMX vert rider '84 - '88). The Performer had the best geometry for vert.
Yes, flatland for sure.
Rad!
Thanks Brad 👊
Wow, I had a Pro racer until I got a chrome trick star with grey Arraya’s, Vector bars, Redline Flight cranks and shimano platforms.
Oh wow! What a great setup 🙌
Recently missed out on a 1985-86? Hutch Trick Star on Marketplace that sold for $150. The guy couldn't believe so many people wanted it.
🤯 Whoa… I bet the guy wishes he’d done a little research before listing it. That’s crazy!
They are selling trick stars 26 in complete on the site now
Yes!! 🙌 Looking forward to the first reviews when they ship later in the year!
Hello I need some help I didn’t not realize how much the Bmx market changed …. Im 50yrs old stuck with a lot of questions . How can I contact you sir ??
Right on. You can send me a DM on my Instagram account @thenostalgicneighborhood
hi do u have old school stuff for sale
Futuristic Black came out later, not on the first series. Believe FB was on Japanese frames.
Good to know. Thanks for chiming in!
i get a serious 4130 looking at that pink trickstat frame ; thats hot . lol .
i had only one hutch , and i loved it , but my gt pro racer fit me better.
a mafia kid on my block , his pop bought him the black w all gold anodised top racer by hutch , whisch was the lightest on the market at the time - it was ridiculously light and FAST and on the first day out, punks were trying steal it from him and the father found out and kicked the shit out of em right in the street .
mid eighties , queens nyc
Holy cow, that’s so awesome. ❤️ You’re a true OG! 💯🙌
Hard to believe that the Hutch bear trap pedals are on the lower cost end vs. Evil Alloy, Bullseye, and Bassett pedals
💯 I hear you on that one! 👊
Oh wow!!! 🙌🙌🙌 ThTs so awesome that you still have all that from when you were a teenager 🤯
What I don’t understand is why did they stop making these cool bmx bikes, GT, Haro, Hutch, Dyno.
That’s a good question. Maybe a topic for another video!
Dang!!! I feel for you on that one. Tragic 😢
HOW CAN I GET ONE PLEASEEEEEE?
The reproduction of the 80s versions are sold out. But the new school ones should be coming later this year. They did a preorder for them, but said they’ll have some additional ones to purchase then. Best way to keep up is to follow the official Hutch facebook page or Instagram account 👍
I had no idea about Hutch when I was a kid. Maybe I’m slightly too young.
I don’t know what year they peaked in popularity, probably 1984 to 1986. If you were into it much after that, they weren’t as prominent in the magazines, and were done by 1992.
@@TheNostalgicNeighborhood Makes sense! I was probably more into it late 80’s and early 90’s. Cool history info, thanks!
Yeah, they were pricey… that’s for sure 👍
What you on about dufus?
Making cheaper overseas was the main catalyst for a lot of great companies. Greed always destroys great things.
Great point!
Only remember the race bike.
The Hutch race bikes were rad too!
the really big deal on this frame was the 75 deg head angle. the later expert and pro racer also had 75 deg angles and i remember how crappy and lethargic all other bikes felt in comparison, especially GT which i believe were still stuck at 72 deg.
the thick dropouts also made it to the judge frame and fork
Yeah, the 75-degree head angle was a game-changer!
You are right, they are a steal compared to some other collector's items and hobbies. 🤣
24”?
This one is a 20”. They are making a 26” TS to be released later this year. 🙌
@@TheNostalgicNeighborhood I got a torker mx26 on the first order and just ordered a barbarian 24. But a 24 trickstar to go with them would be awesome
Asked my mom for a Trick Star for Christmas….. got a huffy Stu Thompson 🤔🤬
I know the feeling. I didn't dare ask for a Trick Star, but I was stuck with a Huffy for a couple years too. 🤣
Dude … you are too AWSOME …. This bike was a dream …. Way overpriced … but a great performer …
Awe shucks!! Thanks for watching and commenting. You’re spot on on all three points 🙌💯
I Think it was Mike Buff that was the 1st one on Hutch team and Hutchins & Buff developed the prototype of the trick star . Get the facts
Think they copied the pierced headtube from GJS
Interesting. I hadn’t seen any references to that, but now that you point it out, it seems that could be the case. Thanks for sharing!
I wouldnt touch a new hutch with a 10 foot pole
