  • This is the watch that started my interest in watchmaking... My dad's 1953 Bulova Commodore, which he wore every day. When I inherited it, it was not running and the winding stem was completely jammed. This video shows how I got it running again!

That was great, Mike. You have now given oxygen to the watch.

I like how you put it! In fact this is the watch I am wearing today, so it is getting even more oxygen! Thanks for watching and commenting. 😁

I love the vintage Bolovas. They are not without reason bestived the name poor mans rolex.
Ok by far not as fanzi inside, no jualing, but take a look at the cross shape of the ruby jewels. My favired of all of them because they are the most forgoing lol. Make sure you download the manufacturers disassemble and reassuring instruktions so you know what oil and grease to use. It's verry important. Use fixodrop to clean the rubys to allow the oil you are going to place on top to stay centered and dont run of.
Good luck looking forward to see your journey.

Thank you for the kind words and for the suggestions! I haven't found a good resource for downloading service sheets… Do you have a resource you can share? I just ordered Fixodrop to take my watchmaking to the next level. I look forward to having you along on my journey! 😁

This was satisfying watching that gunk being removed and seeing the watch come back to life. Looking forward to the full service video and seeing your Dad's watch running smoothly again after all these years Mike! 😀

@Vikkar1 - Thanks! That gunk coming out and the watch spinning down was an amazing moment! I couldn't be more pleased with how this watch came out. I learned a ton and I've been wearing the watch all the time. Stay tuned for the next video - I think it goes live any minute!

Great video, Mike! I went through that same front-loading mystery with the GG! First time with a split stem is so stressful! Also enjoyed seeing the tribble / fiber-ball finally! I remember when you told me about it!

    • @WatchWithMike

Hi Dayton! If this watch only had an integrated case and back then I wouldn't have gone down the rabbit hole trying to take the back off. But no, it had to have gold sides and a stainless steel back...so logic told me that it must separate where the two metals met. Lesson learned! But between you and me, I'll bet it does separate...in the same way a Swatch crystal separates. 😂 I agree that split stems are unnerving. They take so much force! I guess what makes watchmaking an art is learning how much force is right, and knowing when something feels 'wrong'. (I'm so relieved this project is done, it took FOREVER!)

Interesting, but how did crap inside the watch? Cheers Graham

If I had to guess, the crystal was prone to coming off. My dad probably put the watch and the crystal in his pocket until he got home to fix it. By then evil lint had crept in, bit by bit!
