I'm a 72 yr old beginner. I took a class at my local Art Center, but the teacher left after I had spent a considerable amount of money on supplies. Finding your online classes has been an amazing help to me. You are understandable and make things a lot less intimidating than I was believing it was going to be. I'm starting all over with you and your 10 day challenges for beginners. Thanks again for being so accessible.
Bless your heart! I'm a mature beginner too and love Kolbie's teaching style. Sure, we're on a first name basis. At least she makes me feel that way! I bet you feel the same!
i am working through Kolbie's beginner landscape course. It's so packed with great tips and make painting landscape so much easier to tackle. I can't help but notice your comment and wanted to share it with you! You can find the link in the information section of this video. Enjoy the messy process!
I’m happy you found Kolbie. At 71 I’m an ‘intermediate’ sort of painter, but I love watercolor. I hope you will always ask questions bec knowledge will make your journey more enjoyable.
My grandmother started watercolor painting in her late 60s and took classes at her local senior center. She painted birthday and holiday cards for my brother and I, and I have an old fashioned photo album with all of them in it. It’s the item I’d grab if I had to run out of the house due to a fire and I could only take one item. Here I am in my early 50s trying my hand at it, lol! I’ve always loved to hear about people who start new hobbies/pursue education (formal or informal) later in life. I hope to be living and learning at your age! ❤️
I’m with you all in age and (lack of)!experience. This project was harder for me to master. Need to do it again with more patience and more attention to the instruction!!
Two of my fav things about this: the colors of the river, and the way you did the trees. I particularly liked the shadows and tree trunks/branches, which I don't think are usually taught when doing a "mess of trees."
So often I think a painting is going to be awful but you’ve taught me so much about enjoying the process…and I am often surprised that I like the end result after all!
It was your useful and easy tutorials that spurred my interest in art and passion in my early 40s when I first challenged myself to mix and paint. Throughout my life, I have never taken a drawing or painting class.
I'm loving how the river contrasts with the autumn leaves. Beautiful! I struggle with accepting my messy middles, so thanks for the reminder that sometimes it's necessary
I found this the most challenging so far as I tend to overwork things so trying to keep it loose and less formed was really hard, but I absolutely love the colour and vibrancy of this one. Favourite so far!!!
Your are takings something that is scary and making it the fun kind of scary!!! And there’s a little party on the paper when we are all done! So free, so colorful - loving these projects❤. Thanks so much!!!
Listening to you shows me I don’t have to be exact in the colors I use, and changing the idea I had when the watercolors did something else and it’s all ok.
I was not liking my trail and water at all during this one. The trail was horrible. But as you keep saying, it looks like a muddy mess but keep going. So I did. After it was done and I pulled my tape I really liked how it turned out. These tutorials have helped me create landscapes which I haven't been able to do on my own. Thank you Kolbie.
Very much in love with these projects. Really helpful and clear explanations and tips! I especially liked the 'mini lesson within the lesson' part about the foliage brush! Thank you Kolbie. 🤗
Kolbie, thank you so very much for inspiring me and encouraging me to keep going. I live near the sea so I loved doing your ten day seascape course, then it finished and I really missed my daily painting lessons. So now I’m back and it’s wonderful! I’m a bit intimidated by this one but you break everything down and I know it’ll be fine, it’s all learning and good practice. Thank you thank you thank you!
Great tutorial- really clear instructions, and I like that you make the video shot so we can watch it through fairly quickly before attempting it ourselves.
I’d be happy to watch a longer, un-sped-up video. It would be easier for me to follow, and then maybe I’d have a better chance of making something resembling this gorgeous painting. ❤️🧡💛
Hola Kolbie, saludos desde México. 🇲🇽 Me encanta tu manera de enseñar, hace que en lugar de enfocarnos en los errores veamos posibilidades y nos atrevamos a experimentar más 🥰
I'm going to give it a try! :) My biggest challenge is finding time to get some painting in every day, even just a few minutes worth. Your challenges inspire me to do that. Thank you!
Autumn is my favorite I'm so in happy your doing this tutorial! Your class is so easy to follow and your incredible supportive attitude throughout makes it all the more enjoyable. I'm really looking forward to trying this
I love the river in this one, the colour combination is stunning! I also like the mixed of white and black trunks :) Thanks Kolbie, i'll take my brushes right away!
Fall is my favorite color, so I was really excited for this one! I love the color of the river with the fall trees! Beautiful and fun tutorial! Thank you!
It's interesting that you say you were "scared the whole time." I'm scared just watching this! But I'm going to gag my inner critic and give it a whirl. Thank you, Kolbie.
I found this a biiiiigg challenge but that's the point isn't it?! I struggled but persevered and am happier with what I learned than the finished piece. And I did learn a lot. Really enjoying these challenges and will share on my instagram 😀
Lovin' the landscapes, and this one in particular speaks to me. Love the different layers and textures and foliage treatment! Details without being fussy- perfect!
Wow!! I loved today's tutorial and am so pleased with myself for sticking up. I have been painting in small pockets of time and it's absolutely been therapeutic. Embrace the messy middle.
Very beautiful 😻 and you describe so well what I like about painting. You use illusion to capture the diversity of trees or others things in kater 🌳 ❤ thx 🙏🏻
beautiful. Thank you sooo much for your tutorials. Adding the white trunks really made me think of the fall colors around where I live on the border of Colorado.
Wow! I love this Fall Trails painting. I haven’t spent much time painting landscapes, but after watching the first 3 videos I am thinking I should be! I’m really enjoying watching this challenge! Time to get painting!

I too am a 72 year old beginner and find these tutorials are so helpful to a relative beginner. I am so glad I found you online Kolbie.
Autumn trees are one of my favorite things to paint
This was such a challenge for me as a beginner! As Kolbie says...."just keep going, it'll turn out better than you think it will" and she's right! 😊
I love, how mistakes and "messyness" end in beautyful landscapes! Great challenge!!
Admittedly this one took me a few hours. 😮🫣🫣😂 the contrast with the colors. 🥰🥰sooo good!!!
I love that we just have to imply that there are thousands of leaves. Thanks for this video.
The river is my favorite bit in this piece. 😍
I agree with other followers, I appreciate your teaching style and am so thankful you are so accessible to all of us. I have learned so much from you.
I absolutely love how you break down the project into easy steps ❤
I learn so much from you as you walk us through your process, thank you.
Loved the colours in this one. I agree that the white tree trunks really pulled it all together.
The most challenging one yet!
Two of my fav things about this: the colors of the river, and the way you did the trees. I particularly liked the shadows and tree trunks/branches, which I don't think are usually taught when doing a "mess of trees."
Love the white trunks… and appreciate the advice to just give the impression of trees, river, etc… helps to relax! 🙌
the looseness! so pretty with these colors! thanks so much for another 10 day!!!!!!!!!
I’m really getting my feet wet with you. I haven’t painted any masterpieces yet but I am loving the process!
So often I think a painting is going to be awful but you’ve taught me so much about enjoying the process…and I am often surprised that I like the end result after all!

This was tough, but I loved the impressionistic style for the trees! Way more approachable than painting each individual tree!
Love love love love love the autumn leaves!!! Thank you!
Autumn, best time of year !! Thank you for generously teaching us 🙏
Missing autumn right now! I’m sick of the super chilly winter. 🥶 Thanks for the cozy vibes! 🍁
Thank you for another wonderful tutorial, I love that you tell us it's ok not to be perfect and to embrace the art, mistakes and all.
Once again, thank you for keeping it real and approachable.
Thanks for your inspiration and encouraging attitude 😊
The colors... they are so warm 😍 I love this project
Thanks again for sharing. I’m learning from each tutorial in this series. Your authenticity shines in every post.
So excited to try some new tree techniques for these beautiful autumn leaves!
It's amazing what gouache does for the trees and river! Beautiful!
This was so intimidating to paint but the end result is stunning!
Gorgeous colors ❤🧡💛
I would have stopped but I loved your encouragement to add more layers! And then the splatters were a perfect finishing touch!
Love the autumn colors in this one!
What fun! I love how you approach this colorful painting. Playing with paint and experimenting with color are the best ways to learn. Thank you again!
Those white trunks! Love Love!
Love the notion of mistakes as learnings! Thanks!
I found this the most challenging so far as I tend to overwork things so trying to keep it loose and less formed was really hard, but I absolutely love the colour and vibrancy of this one. Favourite so far!!!
I love when it finally comes together! Thanks Kolbie
A very beautiful mess! Astonishing how it turnes out beautiful even on my paper, not only on your demo!! Thanks, Kolbie!!
Beautiful scene, autumn is my favorite season!
Your are takings something that is scary and making it the fun kind of scary!!! And there’s a little party on the paper when we are all done! So free, so colorful - loving these projects❤. Thanks so much!!!
This scene reminds me of my favorite walking trail by the river! So lovely!
Listening to you shows me I don’t have to be exact in the colors I use, and changing the idea I had when the watercolors did something else and it’s all ok.

This seems like a much more complex thing than I would undertake on my own, thanks for breaking it down in ways that are beginner friendly!

I cannot wait to paint brilliant fall colors using your tips. Love the movement of the water!

I’m excited to try this one. I grew up in Vermont where the fall leaves were so amazing. Your painting reminds me of that beauty.
I love the trees in this one! Excited to try it now that I've watched it once.
Wonderful - I love to play with the colors and techniques you've introduced me to!
This one was quite challenging for me! I learned a lot though, and had a great time. Thanks for all you do!
Love the colors, but the challenge of the trees! But I did it. Looking forward to tomorrow's.
Thank you! I learn something every day.
So excited for the remaining challenges!
Loving the autumn scenery! Out west now & getting to see all the colors we lacked in FL!
I love the colors in this one. I'm going to try it again because I think I can do better.
Love the tree work! Thank you!
You made this look easy! I found it pretty difficult! Super glad you are doing these and I’m having a ball! Thanks!
Like your technique on how to paint this scene especially the leaves. Thank you.
