Here is a quote about Dylan found in, "How To Play Harmonica" by Sam Barry. "How is it possible to play the harmonica professionally for thirty years and still show no sign of improvement?" - David Sinclair, music critic.
Really helpful lesson! I'm a guitarist, but I have been playing a bit of blues harmonica. Coming from that, I struggled to get a nice folk sound. And then I saw your video... Thank you!
Love the sloppy chords. Watching Neil young play, “Heart Of Gold” reinforces the rawness. If you want it to be authentic, it can’t be perfect single notes. Great video! Thank you!
you're right. it's not that you're using "no technique" to play like the songs you gave as examples. it's a different technique, the nature of the FEEL that is expressed with the more rough technique, is different from the feel of more stylized technique. neither one is good or bad, they're just different. Different expressions.
There are many ways to be great. Dylan and Young are great harmonica players. Dylan sounds sloppy, but also complex. That’s a pretty cool line to walk.
After I learned to play Piano Man with single notes, I just started doing double stops using the adjacent lower hole to get the authentic sound. It sounds pretty close to me anyway.
Well said Rodrigo M.A. This is a cool no bullshite lesson that just oozes authenticity. Exactly what Iv'e been looking for so long here on YT...made me Sub immediately. Nuff respect to you, keep up the good work.. like to see more of the same. Rollo.
I guess it really does depend on what you are going for. I have to admit that rough style of playing works really well for his type of music....for a lot of other songs on harmonica I can't see it working at all.
Thanks so much for this, I have only been playing for 8 weeks, got the single notes and bends ok but it is not sounding how I want to sound, I couldn't understand how the best players on the internet sound to me nothing compared to the harp player I will try to link if not search ( Lonely king by Nasty Pop (ultra Rare) ). I talked to a guy in Wolves who was going to teach me and he said the guys was really not good, not even decent. so your post has helped so much, I now have direction I want to be a great crap player. ps if your boat is ever in Wolverhampton area give me a shout I will help with the 21 locks.
I would definitely not put Neil Young in the messy category. He uses lots of very difficult to emulate bends, precisely executed slurs and very subtle vibrato. He also achieves a really resonant and biting sound. Don't get me wrong he is very much more sloppy in his live playing. It's just like his guitar playing - it sounds messy and ill-played but it's literally impossible for anybody else to emulate using technique.
Harmonica players (like Joe Popper apparently) indeed say so but most people don't play the harmonica and can't tell the difference between what SOUNDS good and what actually is good...

Ha! Screw that guy lol
That dude's clearly never heard of the song "What Can I Do For You?"

Thank you, 'play it like you feel it's - from Dubuque on the Blues Highway 61

Love that Dylan sound! Could you please tell me in which key is the harmonica you're playing in this video? Cheers mate!
I think it was a C.

Sam . Yes indeed, that’s the rough Americana folk style which has been the most popular harmonica style of the last 60 years and probably more!
Hi can you please show how to play the Bob Dylans Billy, its from Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett
Thanks for the video. What key is this Harmonica please?
A c major i believe
Merci.
Can do some the levellers ? Great videos thanks
What is thos harmonica called?
What best harmonica for folk
Try a hohner special 20 key of G
I’d pay to play the harmonica part of Like A Rolling Stone. EXACTLY like the record
nice! I would listen to the record lots of times and work it out by ear in that case!
Anyone who hasn't seen it, go check out Dylan's 1984 Letterman performances.
What is the ending song ?

Damn u made piano man your u know what in the intro!
Btw what guitar is that in the back? It’s sick!
thanks. It's a custom built guitar from here- www.theboatyardguitarworkshop.com/
It looks quite well to me 😎
What harmonica model did you use here?
Crossover I believe
So play “Raggity”. Got it
Within 7 minutes, why couldn't you've recommended the best harmonicas and keys to get?
That would be a different video:)
Google will have all the answers you need
Cheers. Ed
Lots of lousy harmonica players in bands. I’m not throwing stones. I’m a very average player. I still think it’s a lot of fun.
i can't even play the harmonica

Cool, any examples of this we should be paying attention to?
Btw, Bob Dylan its bad sample of harmonica technic. Its man iconic, yes, but harp sound dirty.
These guys use harmonica to add color. They are musicians, not harmonica players. They play harmonica like beginners.
Why would any sane person want to sound like these guy's who cannot play the harmonica???
a 7 minute video to tell me to play sloppy. thanks

It’s not about the how but the why :)
He said that within the first minute of the video
Bob Dylan is a bad harmonica player, discuss?! Lol
He was such a great songwriter that his harmonica playing is the only area people can critique him on abt technique
@@pagesegovia2026 I agree he is a great song writer and my comment was in jest regarding his harmonica playing.
Harmonica players (like Joe Popper apparently) indeed say so but most people don't play the harmonica and can't tell the difference between what SOUNDS good and what actually is good...
Lol why would anyone ever want to play like bob dylan
Because he's the most popular harmonica player of all time.
Good information, but I wonder, who wants to sound like Bob Dylan?
Not me but he’s the most popular harmonica player of all time :)
Miguel Jimenez yeah who wants to sound like arguably the best songwriter that’s ever lived
Just because you may not like his technique and style doesn't mean that other people don't enjoy the style.
your mom
You're playing it wrong.
but is there a right way? :)
How not to sound then , couldn't think of worse examples of harmonica players
Yes all my favourite players of course 😂😂
