@Coyzy Movie Night One of the biggest things most people miss with this particular movie is exactly how Neo becomes the One. The Oracle tells him, "Sorry kid. You got the gift, but it seems like you're waiting for something. Your next life perhaps." During the rest of the movie until the end, he demonstrates little to say that he definitely is the One.
Only when Neo is killed by Agent Smith at the door to his escape, then resurrected by Trinity's voice, does Neo transition into his next life and become the One, and gaining all the powers to go with it.

In a sense, Neo actually "dies" in that scene, at least symbolically. It's the old initiatory symbolism of the neophyte who has to die to be reborn as a new person (the entire structure of the film is initiatory, in fact).

Don't forget the parallel to her comment about breaking the vase. "...would you still have broken it if I hadn't said anything?" If she straight up told him he was the one, he may not have become the one. She merely said the words that were needed to push him into the right direction. Causality.

The oracle never explicitly says that Neo isn’t the one. HE said he wasn’t, he didn’t believe it, so when she said being the one is like being in love, you just know it. Neo had to accept it, just like in his training with Morpheus. The more confident he becomes, the more he starts accessing his true potential

@@Thom1212 I don't think that's what qualified him as The One. That's just what he was waiting for.
      neo:"I'm not the one"
oracle: "sorry kid." (sorry that you are the one instead of 'not the one' as you are hoping for)
she says he 'has the gift', already has it, already is the one. But he's not ready, waiting for something. Maybe in his next life he will BE READY. Not that in his next life he will BE THE ONE. Then he dies, comes back, and is now ready. That's my interpretation anyways.

So when he got in trouble, he'd cry out "Help, Mr. Wizard!", it invoked the powers of Mr. Wizard to get him home. Finally! Reactors who don't think it's True Love's Kiss bringing Neo back to life 😅
I first saw this film in 1999 when it came out, and then multiple rewatches with friends over the following years. No-one I know ever thought it was the kiss itself bringing him back to life; that seems to have been a post-00's Disney influenced thing which has suddenly become a popular opinion with people only watching the film now.
My take on it was always that his subconscious reasserted itself, finally recognised the Matrix for what it was and realised that death in the was simply another digital rule that could be broken or bent. Perhaps Trinity speaking to him made a difference and triggered this - the brain remains active for some time after the heart stops (which constitutes clinical death) and coma patients have been proven to hear things even when not awake - but the kiss itself was nothing more than symbolic IMO.

Great reaction to such an amazing movie. I really hope you watch the sequels (Only 2 and 3). Despite the bad rep they have they are in fact just as good as the first one and logically continue and conclude the story that was in the heads of the creators from the start.
P.S. In the original script and concept the machines were using the human brains as a neural network that enabled them to evolve and sustain themselves. They were able to harness the full 100% potential of the human brain instead of the 5% humans normally use. They were able to harness the power of the full potential of the human brain but were not able to replicate it mechanically which forced them to keep humans alive for their brains. The studio thought that concept was too complex and they were forced to dumb it down to batteries.

The way I see it, to be "The One" it's not enough to simply be born with an unusually strong mind. As we saw with the kids, lots of people have "the gift," but the gift of a strong mind alone won't lead you to the unwavering self belief required to bend and break the rules of The Matrix. It was Neo's experiences, particularly in the third act of the film, that allowed him to reach that level of self belief. Experiences like having Morpheus believe so strongly in him. Experiences like having The Oracle confirm that he has the gift. Experiences like when faced with no time to think, no time to doubt himself, he instinctually moved faster than anyone Trinity had ever seen before. Experiences like leaping from a chopper to catch Morpheus mid-air and then deliver him safely to a rooftop. Experiences like securing his grip on the cable and using it to miraculously save Trinity from an exploding helicopter. Experiences like fighting Agent Smith in the subway and surviving when nobody had before. And finally, the experience of Trinity telling him she loved him and that The Oracle told her that the man she fell in love with would be The One. No one experience was enough, instead it was this accumulation of experiences that helped Neo grow his self belief and transformed him from being one with the potential, to him fulfilling his potential and becoming The One.
This brings me to the fact that a lot of people are confused by what The Oracle tells Neo - if she's always right, how can Neo be the one when she told him he wasn't. In the film it's explained away when Morpheus tells Neo that The Oracle only tells you what you need to hear, but that's only half the story. When The Oracle told Neo he wasn't The One, she was right because he wasn't The One..... until he was, until the moment he reached such a level of self belief that he stopped being simply someone with The Gift and became The One. Of course, this was something she eluded to him having the potential to do when she told him that he had the gift, but seemed to be waiting for something. Also, she was right when she said either Neo or Morpheus would die. Neo did die..... she just left out the part about him coming back to life.
Anyway, thanks for a great reaction to a great movie.
P.S. I first saw this film maybe a week after it first released here in Australian cinemas at the age of 17yrs with a group of school friends. I remember walking out into a dark night, the surrounds lit by the street lights, and saying to them, "F_ck me, this could all be The Matrix." It was pretty mind altering since the concept that we could all be living in a simulation really hadn't permeated the public consciousness like it has today, in no small part due to this film. For me it really was and remains quite a unique movie experience, one where it seemed my thinking had been forever changed in some fundamental way..... plus the aesthetics were just really f_cking cool, haha.

I had loved this movie when it came out but, like Danny, didn’t remember much. So, just so I could watch this reaction, I watched the movie again. It was worth the 2+ hours of my time! I think I would have taken the red pill. It’s the freedom aspect of it. Niamh, nice catch on the significance of the name “Morpheus”. I never made that connection. I did remember that Neo was an anagram of “One”, so I can still look at myself in the mirror. The “YOU!” count was hilarious! You guys are fun to watch, even when you are retching at the sight of bloody mechanical body wormy things.
I don’t know if you guys already have a list of movies that you plan on reacting to but, if I may, I would like to put in a request. One of my favorite movies is The Equalizer with Denzel Washington. Of course, if you guys have already seen it, the point is mute. But, if not, the added bonus with this movie is that you see a younger [(and more much more foul-mouthed (I actually lost count how many times he said the “F” word!)} David Harbour (Hopper). Anyway, it starts slow but really pays off in the end. Just think about it.

I remember my cousin brothers(they're siblings; they were 19 and 20 back then), dragging me with them to the theater even when I wasn't interested in watching this in 1999.. But by the 3rd installment, it was me who had to drag those two(because they were through with studies and had jobs by the time Matrix: Revolutions released).. That's how impactful these movies were back then on my younger self..

_The Matrix_ is a fantastic film that holds up to this day with its trippy narrative, specific themes, and unique tones through its color palette, music selection, and most importantly its revolutionary visual FX.
A representative of 90s counterculture with questioning authority and freedom allowed within the digital realm, _The Matrix_ is also one of the great “gun fu” films ever made - paying direct homage to Hong Kong style action filmmaking popularized by filmmakers such as John Woo. Yet it also paved the way for action and sci-fi films to come afterwards.
Truly a classic American achievement of film. Also, one of the great endings of all time with the song “Wake Up” by Rage Against the Machine.

These are 9 shorts stories on the matrix universe who helps to understand it and to elarge the universe and the lore. Actually there are only 4 of the 9 that really matters to better understand the matrix sequels :
-The second Renaissance : It's a matrix prequel which tells what happened between humans and machines and why the matrix was created
    -A kid's story : Origin story of a new character in matrix 2 & 3
-Last flight of the Osiris : It's an introduction to matrix reloaded, litterally a couple of hours before.
Btw, matrix 2 (reloaded) and matrix 3 (revolutions) are actually a 4 hours film cut in two parts (they were shot back to back) and this is why they were both released the same year with only a 6 months gap. A little bit like the lord of the rings wich were shot back to back as well.

I love this movie. It is one of my all time favorites. I am, however, not fond of any of the sequels. I am in the minority on that, I think. I liked the 2nd one well enough, but the 3rd did not pay off in the way I hoped it would, based on the hints that got dropped throughout the 2nd movie. I've seen the 4th, but don't really remember anything about it, despite how recent it is.
Anyway, I enjoyed your reactions to The Matrix, and I'm now going to subscribe and check out your other videos.

Guns. Lots of guns. Do you remember it from John Wick? The Oracle told him that he was waiting for something, maybe a new life. He died and came back as the one. Agent Smith was waiting for him because he remembered that was the room Trinity was in at the beginning of the movie. I worked in the theater when this movie came out. I saw Morpheus fight Neo six times a day!

The Matrix 2-3 have too many boring scenes. There is overacting and unnecessary philosophizing. The action scenes are also too long, and there is too much repetition in the fight choreography. That's why I created a "Matrix ULTIMATE" version, where I combined the two parts but cut out all the unnecessary scenes, resulting in a single, dynamic three-hour movie. To conclude the story, I also used a few scenes from The Matrix 4. If you're interested in the full Matrix 2+3 ULTIMATE (2024) version, search for the 'Matrix 2 3 ULTIMATE end scene' clip among my videos, and you will find a GDRIVE link in the comments. I managed to cut out an hour of unnecessary scenes without harming the story. I put four months of work into this because I had to create perfect audio transitions in 160 places. (Sometimes I cut out just a single ridiculous word or sentence.) I've gone through many test viewings. Even those who hadn't seen Matrix 2 and 3 helped, and based on their suggestions, I reinserted a few weak scenes because the story demanded it.
If someone made a 'first-watch' video of this, it would truly be a rarity because, besides my friends, no one has seen it yet. Most Matrix fans agree that the sequels got progressively weaker, and this combined version has become a highly RECOMMENDED film for the new generation as well. It's a sequel that you won't want to fast-forward through at any point. (And to reiterate, I used scenes from Matrix 4 for the story's ending, so we see Trinity and Neo 20 years older.)
If you want, I can make subtitles where you can see which scenes were shortened/cut, and then a discussion can start about it, which generates views. Many people hate Matrix 2 and 3, but now there is finally a watchable and almost error-free version

I would HIGHLY recommend watching The Animatrix before the next films. It's an anthology of short films that begin adding lore to the franchise, rounding out the world -- and some of the shorts introduce new characters and plot points that lead in directly to the sequels.
Also, during the making of The Matrix 2, extra scenes were filmed and used as cut scenes for a video game. I found a collection of those scenes on youtube. They're a nice bonus to watch after seeing Matrix 2, kind of like deleted scenes in DVD extras.

The next one is really good. Probably, if I was rating out of ten, Matrix is a 9, Reloaded is 8 and Revolutions is 6.5.
Keanu films to see include Point Break, Constantine and Bram Stoker's Drakula.
The film by the same writers/ directors that everyone should see is V for Vendetta.

The Matrix was mind blowing, The Matrix Reloaded is even better.
The Animatrix is an anthology and “The Second Renaissance part 1&2” explain how and why the war between humanity and AI happened.
“Final Flight of the Osiris” was cutting edge CGI at the time and it ties into The Matrix Reloaded and also the video game “Enter the Matrix” which focuses on “Ghost” and “Niobe” which also happens along side the events of Matrix Reloaded.

The Matrix, as many people have said, is a documentary. It is real. Among other criticisms, the film is a social commentary about capitalism. This is evident in much of the dialogue, but most notably in the end of the conversation that Neo and Morpheus have in "The Construct", where Morpheus says how the matrix, is a computer generated dream world, built for control, in order to change a human being, into a battery. What is one major thing, all of society, human civilization across the globe, has never ceased talking about, over the past like, 75 years? Production. The not so subliminal manipulation has always been there right in front of us. "Learn how to be a more productive worker," "Make your workplace flow better and be more productive," "How to micromanage your company to produce more," "How to make your workers more productive employees." We are literally being turned into human batteries, used as fuel for perpetuating the existence of capitalism. Just replace the matrix with capitalism - and more specifically, by extension consumerism - and replace the machines with capitalists. Obviously capitalists don't grow us (yet) but think about how individuals like the egomaniacal Elon Musk, a capitalist and one of the richest human beings ever to live, is so concerned with "falling birthrates" and a declining population (even though that the population is still expected to increase to 10 billion over the next century DESPITE the declining birth rate). He is so obsessed with there not being enough people (which for him means not enough laborers) that it is now being revealed to the press how often he goes around his companies and propositions female employees to have his babies. He already got one female executive from Tesla to agree to be impregnated by him by way of en vitro. I don't know if she has given birth yet, but the guy currently has 12 children. Then on the other side of the production issue, China has already made an AI system CEO of one of its companies, so that the AI can learn to micromanage the employees to such a degree that would be impossible for a human to plan out, in order to increase production to literally the maximum humanly possible.
Unfortunately the symbolism of the matrix has been highjacked by right wing nut job - incels and the manosphere - in order to convince you to do the exact opposite the films philosophy. In order to break out of the matrix you have to remove yourself from it, remove yourself from capitalism, transcend the illusion of the idea of money, that you NEED it in order to live (because that is literally what this system convinces us is true; if we don't have money to buy food, we die - even though you actually have the freedom to walk in, take the food you require for sustenance and then walk out - and using the fear of imprisonment to deter us from recognizing the truth of this freedom). As Neo says at the end, he wants to show us a world "without you (the powers that be - capitalists), without rules and control, without boarders or boundaries." The manosphere says in order to escape the matrix, you just gotta become rich, buy expensive fancy cars and clothes, fly on private jets, make both men and women fawn over and worship you - which is directly engaging with the capitalist system, literally the exact opposite of what the film is meant to inspire.

Just one thing, I would like to add. I hope you don’t mind me doing it - and this is is not related to the movie, but your production value. You’re using Blue Yeti microphones. And you point them towards you like end address microphones. But the sensitive end of them is, where the gain knob is located. That’s why the sound of you has such a distant quality to it. Of course, after putting them upright, they will be further away from you, so you’ll need to put them closer to make up for it. But in the end, you will be surprised by the added clarity and presence!

Great reaction, really enjoyed watching your genuine and honest response. This film is far deeper though. The names and cultural references have a deeper spiritual meaning. You mentioned Morpheus the god of sleep. But Trinity is from the holy trinity. Neo meaning new but also an anagram of One,etc.etc. Don't be to hard on Cyphur (disguised secret) he represents Judas who turned on Jesus and represents all of us and our lack of belief. The truth of this film lies in the Eastern spiritual traditions which says we are all asleep in our conditioned minds and to awake from that state is to become enlightened. And of course Trinities love proves love can transcend anything. I could go on,theres so many Bhuddist and Hindu references. .
