This tram-troom has absolute zero self-awareness. He is seriously complaining about Tucker criticizing the media for making female characters less feminine.... while he is made up to look like a stereotypical feminine woman. He obviously has exactly the same ideal of a feminine woman in his head as Tucker, and yet he calls Tucker names for lamenting the loss of femininity which he himself is desperately trying to live out. I bet he would gladly wear one of those bikinis from the old Moral Kombat, alas, he shall not pass. And as far as changes in Dead Space go, if they are so insignificant and inconsequential, why make it a point to make them? Being woke is not about what you do, it's about the why.
Lol, thank you for proving my point about how people who complain about woke shit are doing it purely on reaction instead of any nuanced or principled stance. For example, you going on an extensive tirade fantasizing about me in a bikini, claiming I want to be a woman, when the reality is that I’m nonbinary and don’t claim to be a woman.
@@deaddomain I don't know what you claim, I judge you by what I see you DO, and you do very much try to look like a feminine woman. And what you want to look like is very obviously intersects with what Tucker would want his woman to look like.

"Woke" is anything that make people think of politics, not anything political, anything that makes you THINK about stuff in the real world. They don't want to be challenged, just entertained.
IF I'm playing a game for it's politics and to have my ideas challenged (Deus-Ex, Metal Gear, Disco Elysium, etc...) then I'm more than ok with it being political, even if it's ideas don't align with mine, that's the point after all. But if I'm playing some other game or consuming some media just to relax after a long day and forget my worries for an hour or two, then no, I don't want to be challenged, preached to or think about the real world, it's called escapism for a reason. Why is that so hard to understand?
@@THExRISERIf you want escapism you can always play a myriad of games that don't really require much ideological content in them, often those are multiplayer or casual games but not exclusively. And yet that isn't what we are really talking about is it ? we are talking about people wanting to playing call of duty and mow down horde after horde of brown people to facilitate invasions that are copied from the real world, we are talking about games where you can interact with/murder sex workers, we are talking about games with storylines about manly heroes saving the day because only a man could do it, we are talking about games where you colonize galactic lands for empires. You say you want simple escapism but thats not really true, when you choose to play a game with a story line or a game replicating political and social tropes then you complain about "wokeness" making you want to think what you are really saying is you want the comfort of the status quo nomatter if it hurts others. You are complaining about your privilege being taken away. you are upset that now you have to get out of your comfort zone, but for the rest of us almost every game forces us to be uncomfortable.
@@THExRISERBut any game with a story usually has a message. And messages will more often than not bleed into politics. Unless you play something like Terraria, but even that I can twist into environmentalism with enough mental gymnastics
To add to your comment about white men who watch and play all those things that have inclusive characters. Just because the person isn't white or straight or even a man, doesn't mean you cant see representation in them. In the movie everything everywhere all at once, For me (a white guy) I felt so represented in "beta waymond"! his radical kindness and softness. that's me! I am that person! I was so happy to see that type of man represented. And him not being white didn't take anything away from my enjoyment of the movie or the character.
That is a wonderful point. I wish I could have gone into it more, but I feel like the essay was already a bit scattered. Still, you make a very good argument that more people should be attentive of
It's true, but unfortunately so much of the discourse is framed in a way that portrays specific identifiers as a monolith. It's incredibly silly because identity is so much more 3 dimensional than we seem equipped to discuss as a society.
@vincentbatten4686 yeah exactly. It's like characters have to be exactly the same skin color and political affliation for these nonfans to like them. Not that the antiwoke crowd is any better as shown by this video. Most people though don't care. They just play stuff and have opinions. Game journalists are the extreme left.
What is also ridiculous is that the people complaining about less sexualized female characters shame women in real life for even possibly maybe inching towards being somewhat sexual. Also they’ll talk about how the media “hates fathers and families” but then call strong, fleshed out, positive father characters like Kratos or Peter B. Parker “woke” for having flaws and emotions.

The bathroom controversy bugged me in dead space... i just thought it was more immersive as the owners would have to pay for the building of the ship and would probably want to save money on bathrooms, so instead of 2 bathrooms u cut the cost of materials to about 2/3 of the bathroom budget by making 1 slightly bigger bathroom for all genders.
I'm 90% sure that the bathrooms were unisex even in the original Dead Space, because they have that same entryway door before the branch into male/female bathrooms.
and a fair amount of old scifi novels have unisex restrooms because the people on the ships are usually meant to be practical, trained professionals. Hell, sorta related to that is how Heinlein was GLAD to see the unisex showers in the starship troopers movie, and admitted he'd missed the mark there, letting his marine experience influence the book TOO heavily.
I remember reading a short story many years ago, where the bathrooms (which we call toilets or Ladies and Gents in Australia) were referred to as a sanitary room, poop chute or a san for short. There was a logo above the door that looked like an egg shaped four way yin-yang symbol with a black, blue, brown and yellow swirl or something like that. For the use of humans, aliens and androids. I still wonder what was on the other side of that door. Whatever it was, it involved suction, tentacles and standing still to avoid injury according to the sign.
I'm a straight white cis guy who enjoys a lot of these things that are supposably "woke". I do my best in trying to agrue against these type of individuals arguments and it is exhausting. I couldn't even imagine how much worse it is for people who are LGBTQ. On the bathroom issue. Shouldn't these anti-woke people have some against Starship Troopers? Since in movie there's a scene where they all shower together. Anyway, great video! I hope you have a fantastic day!
Well, Starship Troopers is a parody of a Fascist society. I think the writer was fine with women and men fighting alongside eachother, but believed in a kind of militaristic Junta society where everything benefits the military. The movie was made by an anti-fascist who wanted to use satire to mock the incompetence of such a society. I don't know if he was saying anything about gender equality or if he was just taking it straight out of the books, but I don't think the movie was trying to endorse that kind of society in any way. But then yeah, if we're talking about portrayals of something, yeah they should be angry about it to be consistent, but consistency isn't their MO, they are inconsistent and hypocritical by nature.
I feel like an unspoken theme of Starship Troopers is that when it comes again, fascism will be appealing; given that the film is a propaganda movie within its own universe, it’s kind of spooky that it successfully seduces actual fascists in the real world, who never understand that it’s a critique and a dire warning
The sad irony of Starship Troopers in a nutshell The book was a bit fascist iirc, but the film seeks to mock that a bit. Only to have fascists unironically love the message the film was warning against. Which I guess isn’t too shocking, since the anti woke crowd absolutely lacks any semblance of actual media literacy 🤷♀️
The problem with "woke," is everyone has their own definition. To me, i have used (and stopped for this reason) being overcorrective, ridiculous, trying to be offended by minute things. But there's the other side of the coin where people use the word as placeholder for anything that isn't considered "normal" by 1950s standards.
yeah, the media used to use the word liberal, until people stopped being offended by it. just like they used the word communist, then socialist, until people started genuinely started taking an interest in it. now everything is cultural marxism. they invent new words to otherize people every few years when the old one wears off.
Why is the '50s still being used as a cultural reference point? The median age of Americans now is something like 54, which means there are relatively few people now who were even born in the '50s, let alone remember it. (What's more, the more edgy "retro" '50s subcultures that have emerged in recent decades have started to shift attitudes toward the era.) There's plenty of conservative cultural phenomena from the '70s, the '80s, and even the '90s that Americans still have non-fuzzy memories of. Why don't "wokebusters" appeal to those, instead of trying to resurrect an era that might as well be the Old West period for today's high school and college students?
YES ! thank god someone actually acknowledges the issue with calling everything woke. finally, it feels refreshing to see a normal conversation about this.
Everything is woke, everywere you look you see a company pretending to care about people's ideology when all they care is money. And they are dunb enough to fall for those companies lies.
“Full of clothing zombies” nearly made me burst out laughing at work and cringe simultaneously. Imagine genuinely believing women can’t be beautiful or sexy unless they’re naked.
It’s ironic since the game he’s playing, MK9, is the game which literally turned more than half the cast into zombies, including a number of female characters such as Kitana and Jade. Also ironic is the fact that he says that right before sending one said female character off the edge of a bridge to get gruesomely impaled.
@@deaddomain The saddest part is history is repeating itself once again because the same way they complained about the female fighters in MK11 for simply wearing clothes and having realistic faces taken from real people’s likenesses just like the male characters (which we conveniently never hear complaints about), they are now complaining about not enough nudity in the new MK1 game with slight hints of underlying racism and micro aggressions directed towards the returning fan-favorite character Tanya for what I can only assume to be the “crime” of having more pronounced black facial features…as if the people they choose for these games aren’t professional models hired for their good looks. It would be one thing if they simply didn’t find the model attractive, but it’s an oddly telling coincidence how most of the reactionary backlash right now is aimed at the only black female fighter in the game revealed so far as of the time of this comment. 🙄
Even if you're going in purely for titillation and sex appeal, clothing kinda plays an important part in that. Which is why everything from fancy formal attire, to lingerie, to fetish ware, exists. A naked body isn't nearly as interesting as a nearly naked body, as they say.
Good point that it's really weird to see certain fandoms nowadays care so much about how a female character should act & look, always to the faces of female fans, as if they're no different from nosy gossip columnists from Cosmo. Meanwhile, it's frustrating yet fascinating how selective they are on which female they criticise. Animated Harley Quinn almost gets no criticism despite her series having strong "woke" elements, compared to specifically her live-action role in Birds of Prey. When a woman character, despite her oversexed looks, is given agency, it somehow warped the brains of most fans.
It really is the most selective criteria ever. I recently re-watched Aliens and the whole time I couldn't help but think about how every aspect of Ripley's character, from disregarding men to becoming a capable fighter to appearing slightly masculine, would be called "woke" and unrealistic if it came out today.
Animated Harley?? Are you talking about the most recent animated Harley Quinn series?? Yeah I did notice a few woke elements; but, it didn’t seem all that politically motivated. Though I’ve only seen snipet shorts of the show on TH-cam. There are some hilarious moments though. Like Joker being the Mayor or something etc.😂😂

Also I've heard Americans refer to their women friends as "girl friend" so she literally could be just talking about a really good friend (I hope I'm wrong and she was actually talking about a partner tho)
@@fireflybutton1939 Contextually it makes sense she was talking about a romantic partner and not just a solid friend. Woke is an excuse. It is a way to hate things without putting real effort into finding a reason to dislike it. They don't even need to watch or play something if it's "woke" its just bad. And if they watch it, they may like it and then need to change their mind and they can never do that.
"Woke" is simply the newest replacement word for what "alien," "pinko," and "hippie" meant. The idea remains the same: "You're weird, so you must be out to harm us all."
Okay, I for one dislike the new race swapped Snow White. It has no reason to exist, nothing new to say and is basically another girl boss movie with an obnoxious lead actor. It’s like Velma, it has no reason to exist, nothing to say and is more of an act of mental masturbation for the creators involved. Which isn’t bad, you know you do you if that’s your thing….. But don’t take a beloved franchise that means a lot to a lot of people and turn it into your own mental masturbation jar.
@@SeasideDetective2no, it isn’t…. Woke wasn’t bad, woke used to mean something. But then the shift happened. I don’t know when it happened, but at some point something was off. I then realized what was wrong when Skullgirls went “woke”. The new owners of skullgirls offered nothing of value, no new characters, no sequels, no offer. Instead offered to censor parts of the game and create a hostile and toxic culture war within their social media sphere. Then that’s when it hit me. Snow White, Velma, The Little Mermaid. None of these works do anything new, bring anything to the table, are good or well-written, or even have a reason to exist. It’s a corporate product, and it’s fans are so invested that they will call you racist or sexist for not liking it. It’s the same thing with the MCU after Thanos died. It has no reason to exist but to sell tickets. The characters are shit, the storylines are shit and people are walking away from the MCU. The problem isn’t wokeness exists. The problem is, the people pushing it were always ready and willing to morally attack your character if you didn’t like it. Remember the writers who made Superman? Two Jewish refugees who wanted to create a character who embodied being an immigrant who wants to belong? You think they went around calling everyone who didn’t like Superman an anti-Semite? What’s more? Y’all have trapped our industries in this woke box. Comics used to be this neat little thing I’d explore and buy. Now they are trash. The female characters are ugly, the men are enfeebled, there are all these lectures about gender and sexuality in the work rather than a subtext. Video game characters made by American companies are intentionally ugly. But you guys always gatekeep us from moving away from this shit or at LEAST allowing some wiggle room for alternative forms of creativity. But we can’t even have that, because journalists and twitter users , I.e. the only feedback corporations and companies or new creators have tend to be violent towards those who revolt creatively. Journalists, developers, artists, twitter sycophants. All of you are annoying activists who make engaging with any of these works exhausting and frankly, woke… anti-woke….. @@SeasideDetective2 I kind of have been wondering, given the description of woke spotting, if a large chunk of the 'woke hating base' is less political and more simply . . . bored people only looking out for their own entertainment. They can be harnessed for a political cause, kinda, maybe. But mostly they just call something 'woke' whenever it's not very good as a sort of purging of collective outrage. In that sense, a portion of the 'anti-woke' base might be a sort of backlash to 2010's 'hype culture' in marketing. It's also why you get bizarre takes from the anti-woke commentators on TH-cam. Their purpose isn't really to have a point, but rather to lead a sort of performative outrage for bottom tier entertainment.
Another show I can compare to Velma is the new show My Adventures with Superman, most characters are reimagined as different ethnicities, different ages and appearance. Unlike velma, the show is written well and the characters don’t make you want to end it all. Those new things have nothing to do with the quality of the show. It’s considered “woke” to some people out there just because now Lois Lane is a cute Korean woman with a pixie cut.
Ah yes, 'Luz Lane' XD And yeah, it's not so much that Velma is bad because it's 'woke'. It's bad because it's bad. It's just that the current popular thing to do is race-mix casts and introduce more social progressive topics. Which means that you'll have both lots of media that does that well. And lost more media that does it badly. Because most of everything is crap.
I played through dead space and loved it, not once did I notice the bathrooms. Why do inter only those who would take issue with it would have eagle eyes open for it. Your conclusion regarding shared cultural experiences is why Gamergaters were so focused on calling people "fake gamer girls" and repeating over and over that "woke" games were being made to appeal to people who "don't even play games." They had to make sure to negate any possibility of shared human experience to dehumanize the other.

It was easy for people in Medieval times to scapegoat the Jews because they were a small and insular group that mostly kept to themselves. Since a lot of people didn't actually know very much about the Jews, it was easy for them to buy into anti-Semitic propaganda and beliefs. So that's why it's important to have stuff like representation and diverse voices. It helps move the needle forward.
Funny thing about the all gender bathroom is Dead Space... It is literally what spaceships have. Spaceships have unisex bathrooms, both because it is smaller to have one bathroom for all genders and because there is usually only one toilet... Again, one toilet because it is smaller to have just one. It's basically like the bathroom in your own house in that sense. One person goes there at a time, so it isn't gender exclusive. Dead Space was probably making a nod to the fact that actual spaceships are only have unisex bathrooms, even if the restrooms in the game have mutilple stalls (idk I've never played, but I'm pretty sure they do). This is to say I can't wait until a conservative becomes an astronaut and screams and wails about the unisex bathrooms on the spacecraft.
I'm surprised some of those idiot's that belive that's the reason DMC5 is "woke" even though they had a black dude in the game and to which he was originally a white guy in the devil may cry anime ( the old one not the new one being made by Netflix and the people behind the castlevania animated series's )

I remember several years ago there was a reactionary content creator who often complained about 'forced diversity' which is what they called woke before they started calling it woke instead. And then a game was released that had a POC in a setting where in the source material everyone was white. And usually this was something he'd complain about. But in this case he thought the way it was explained made it plausible. It never happened in the source material, but he believed it could have happened. And suddenly he started getting comments accusing him of having gone full SJW. I don't know exactly how many comments he got. Could have been 200, could have been 20, could have been only 2, but it was enough to make him deeply uncomfortable with how extreme some of his viewers were. Because as it turns out, people who use these terms never discuss what they actually mean. They just assume everyone have the same definition and don't even consider the possibility that maybe they could have completely different thresholds. It's just a buzzword they use about everything that doesn't personally concern them and therefore think doesn't need to be addressed.

@@queenieevergreen (Thanks for clarifying. :)) That is a good question with a difficult answer, as there are multiple reasons why there aren't more proper leaders in the US. Could be because of the masses being more easy to manipulate, culture differences, mindsets becoming too entrenched (like both parties). Education failing to providing the right lessons or wisdom, parents not being good enough to lead their children properly, preferring to let media be the babysitter and not caring about what they watch. and so on and so on. the list is huge. I do think it's going to need something big to happen that will force the change and leader to happen, since that's how history always follows. A reactionary race is what we are, we react instead of acting before such things. And leaders aren't born, they are made purely in the moment like heroes and are praised later. So why aren't there more? It's likely because they have yet to do something major that get's them noticed. Going against the status quo, and other forces who want things to be exploitable. (And personal note. We desperately need more permanent changes in laws and things, not something that will be undone by the next person in power. That has to stop! I feel like their's just too much emphasis being put on wether or not a certain piece of media is "woke" when discussing it's quality or it's validity. And that's true for both sides of the spectrum, people who think it's "too woke" vs people who think it's "not woke enough". There have been instances where woke culture was detrimental to the media, a good example is the in new Star Wars movies : Showing women and people of color as officers of the empire was a mistake IMO, it weakens the symbolic message of a culturally diverse Rebel Alliance fighting an evil Empire exclusively represented by old white dudes like in the old movies. Being woke for the sake of being woke isn't interesting, it's the message and the ideas that you convey that are important Great video btw :)
yeah now that you mention it, all of star wars pre and post disney takeover had serious political themes, just that once disney took over they pushed the ideas even further left rather than sticking to, as you mentioned, the diverse and free rebels fighting back against a tyrannical and homogenous force seeking to subdue and subjugate the galaxy, which kind of diminishes the impact.

Theres an entire scene in the movie that takes place in unisex showers. Its almoat like the outeage is selective. No...of course not...banish the thought harder than they banish their braincells.
So, let me get this straight: Dead Space Remake ages up some characters (but most offensively, the player character's girlfriend!) so that they, who are an expert in their fields and working in deep space in a industrial, technical and scientific jobs that would take incredible amounts of education and experience to attain, no longer looks like 20 something models. No, obviously the original was much more realistic.

Hey there. Sorry about the joke, as I’ve mentioned in other comments calling it out, the school dropout crack was SPECIFICALLY a reference to Tim Pool. I have plenty of friends and family who didn’t finish high school or pursued GED or technical programs. My jab was instead at Tim Pool, an idiot who wears not finishing school as a badge of honor and validation for how smart he thinks he is. In reality, finishing school has little to do with intelligence or aptitude. As you and others have noted, many people are unable to because of unavoidable circumstances. I’m sorry for the misunderstanding, I should have been clearer.
@@deaddomain thanks for responding quickly. the Tim Pool explanation is a little meh but whatever. keep in mind when you make a video, your making the video for people that watch your videos, not for people that watch Tim Pool. i don’t understand the reference as i am almost completely ignorant of his show because i don’t watch it. other than the odd response video to something particularly offensive he’s said, i have no interest in him. his politics suck, his music sucks, he just sucks. had this video been presented as a response video i’d be more inclined to believe your explanation. i’m not saying that i don’t believe you, but the explanation is kind of weak. i’ll give you a pass because your intentions seem genuine. P.S. many on the left make the mistake of insulting the intelligence of those on the right. now while this may, more often than not, be true of the individual in question, making fun of someone for being for being unintelligent is a form of punching down. i know… they don’t afford us the same consideration… but… we have to beat them civilly or it just feeds the image of those on the left looking down on everyone else. 17:03 A TH-camr called Crimson put it pretty well, the more realistic women in games don't meet standards of a 14-year-old virgin's fantasies of what the "perfect woman" is.
The uproar about Aloy from the Horizon games not looking like a plastic Barbie doll and instead like an actual huntress who spends most of her time outdoors was very baffling to me (to say nothing of the firestorm of outrage when she was revealed as queer... which many queer people already knew anyway).
05:28 Speaking of Horror being a wide genre, for years I told people that _"I don't like horror"_ and sometimes adding that yeah it's a movie, but it's about things that really happen to real people (likely confusing some people) until one day I noticed Alien (1979) is Sci-fi/Horror and I'd always just considered it Sci-Fi. I didn't have the aversions to that movie that I told people horror has, and so I realized it's actually Slasher/Gore (and Hostel's tourture-pr0n) that I dislike and that Horror is a much broader genre than I'd had it mentally categorized as.
If their problem isn’t with the whole franchise, it’s the cast, or it’s one movie, or a character, or one scene, or minor/undertone themes, or an innocent celebratory event, or the fact that someone’s hair is blue. The problems just get smaller and smaller until all we’re looking at is a speck of dust that they still stare at with disdain and everyone’s left to wonder why they care so much about nothing at all.
hearing a dude unironically listing "wokeness changes" and describing someone as being "diversified", ahhh no awful vibes. on velma, i've actually seen specific criticism about mindy kahling that talks about her conservatism and the great irony that the show is far more anti-woke than "woke". lovely video and if it's not too cheeky to say the camera definitely helps me pay attention lol. i'm not actually using twitter atm lol but new account followed, i'd noticed the old one was gone and was little worried ❤
The word "woke" originally emerged as a term rooted in African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and was used to describe being aware of social and racial injustices, and advocating for social change. It was associated with activism and the pursuit of equality. However, it is alleged that sinister forces manipulated the term and weaponized it for their own purposes. One could argue that the concept of spiritual consciousness, which emphasizes self-awareness, mindfulness, and a deep connection to the inner self and the universe, has been used as a tool by these alleged forces to further their agenda. By co-opting the term "woke," they sought to distort its original meaning and use it as a pejorative to mock and discredit those who advocate for social change and equality. This manipulation aimed to create confusion and division within social movements, casting doubt on their intentions and undermining their efforts. Furthermore, proponents of this argument might claim that the weaponization of the term "woke" has been intentional, strategically used to vilify those who express dissenting opinions or challenge the status quo. By associating "woke" with negative connotations such as political correctness, divisiveness, and extremism, these alleged forces aimed to stifle free speech, suppress alternative perspectives, and maintain the status quo by demonizing the very concept of spiritual awakening. Additionally, it could be argued that the weaponization of the term "woke" has been amplified through social media and online echo chambers, where misinformation and disinformation can spread rapidly and influence public opinion. The alleged forces behind this headless psyop may have used these platforms to create a false narrative around the concept of spiritual consciousness, distorting its true essence and manipulating public perception. In conclusion, this argument suggests that the term "woke" was intentionally co-opted and manipulated to serve a hidden agenda, by distorting the concept of spiritual consciousness and using it as a divisive tool to undermine social change movements. However, it's important to note that this argument is speculative and lacks concrete evidence, and should be approached with critical thinking and skepticism. It's essential to rely on credible sources and evidence-based information when forming opinions or conclusions.
i will admit that i was on the "thats weird the mortal kombat women are fully clothed now" train but i wasnt like oh god neatherrealm is so fucking woke for me it was the fact that mortal kombat was always raunchy and so when i saw the newer games i didnt like the fact they turned that down but now looking at it from a different perspective i can see i was being a bit of asshole for thinking that way
I'm glad you compared Velma and Harley Quinn. Both are kinda similar: edgy HBO comedies based on existing franchises. Both are "woke" but one of them is actually good. My favorite line is "So we're blowing up Todd after dinner" followed by "Todd doesn't work Wednesdays"
Her mentioning "I'd listen to my GF over security protocols" Isn't even confirmation she has a girlfriend, just that she understands why he'd rather listen to her than the protocols.. They reach so far for this rage bait, it's crazy.
The best defining of woke that I have found. Those who use woke as a pejorative tells more about them than about what they are [not] talking about what they choose to be asleep/ignorant about.
I have some more insight on Jeremy Hambly. Around 10 years ago he was to my knowledge at the time a very apolitical youtuber who ran a TH-cam channel entirely about opening up rare packs of Magic: The Gathering. Some time later he started using his platform to promote bigotry within the Magic: The Gathering community. In 2017 other TH-camrs exiled him from their circles when he lead his followers into harrasing a beloved cosplayer named Christine Sprangle for no reason other than that she was a woman within the Magic: The Gathering Comminity. The bullying and harassment was so bad the Christine Sprangle ended up quitting cosplaying for multiple years.
I have heard about that. It’s honestly sad that at some point he had channels for things he seemed to enjoy and now just miserably reads the news and tries to sound angry at it.
As a person who's starting to dable in storytelling and making stories of their own, it irks me how these people misuse storytelling terms and such, especially the word "Mary Sue". Rey from Star Wars is not a Mary Sue, just a poorly written character. Those are two different things that these people misconstrue. In the first sequel movie, she: - mostly has to run away and be chased off from multiple First Order encounters - is captured by Kylo Ren effortlessly and put into a "Damsel in Distress" situation which is literally an anti-woke trope - has to use slight of hand Jedi mind tricks / basic mindcontrol to escape the Starkiller base instead of ploughing through the troopers with minimally strategic brute force (pun intended) - barely wins by the skin of her teeth on her last fight with Kylo Ren (who was already badly injured and spent at that point from being shot at by Chewie, killing his dad, and fighting with Finn) This even applies to The Last Jedi (the one that's the most woke apparently) - Rey is not the driving force of the plot for a majority of the movie (it's Poe, Leia, Luke, Admiral Holdo, Snoke, Kylo Ren, and Rose who are the more proactive characters) - She has a mentor figure - She literally confronts Snoke and gets easily taken a hold of by him - Kylo Ren literally rescues her from Snoke - She and Kylo Ren team up in order to win against the red guards - Her lightsaber tug-of-war battle with Kylo Ren ends in a draw - She literally has no idea how to get out of the destroyed ship and has to be picked up by Finn and Rose - Her biggest feat in the movie when it comes to the force is... lifting rocks... to escape. - She's literally not part of the fight in the final big battle confrontation (it was between Luke, Kylo Ren, and the elite ground forces of the First Order) I'm not interested in defending her misconstrued characterization in The Rise of Skywalker since that movie is shit allround. And even if she was an Over Powered fem-protag, storytellers have proven time and time again that you can make even problematic tropes good and digestible: - Schindler's List can technically be categorized as a "white savior" story yet nobody talks smack about that in the movie (I wouldn't either, this movie is Goated) - One Punch Man and especially Mob Psycho are basically the go-to when it comes to "OP but well-written" - Gojo and Sukuna are literally the fan-favorite of Jujutsu Kaisen despite being OP characters within the context of the story - Meruem from Hunter x Hunter (don't wanna spoil anything about him, but he is also fanfavorite-worthy character despite being OP) - Bill Cypher from Gravity falls - Frieren is a current standout Simply put, stories can just be bad. Period. End of story.
I can't believe people would criticize Dead Space for "going woke" when a perfectly valid reason for criticism, the fact that they made Isaac Clarke look like Adam Sandler, is right there
I'm a huge Mortal Kombat fan and I really don't understand the hatred people have for the newer character designs. More realistic athletic bodies just look more natural, and the characters not having to exclusively wear tiny bikinis means they can have so much more personality. In a game with very little dialogue, a costume that can convey a character's status and background is super important
The scary thing about anti-wokeness is that after a certain point it becomes dogmatic, instead of wokeness being bad because it's cringe it becomes bad because it's woke, wokeness turns into a devil of sorts. I've seen people be willing to support really bad stuff because "at least it's not them wacky gays". At this point there's no longer a rationale behind it. Not to mention hating something is objectively worse then enjoying something. Sidenote: "capitalism" is perhaps the single most deradicalizing word
in dead space, Kendra getting a girlfriend could also be a methode to NOT suggest isaac and kendra hooking up it may sound weird for someone who played dead space, but the trope of the main hero getting together with the girl is a very previlent one. that actually happens in dead space 2. so by isaac talking and talking to kendra, people might start to expect kendra and isaac hooking up. but because she has "a girlfriend" people understand "oh, so this is not gonna happen then."
As a science fiction nerd- the current use of "woke" as catch all term for something not being conservative enough has really laid bare just why progressives write better science fiction. Tiny details about imagined future or alien societies that I used to just accept like "yeah ofc, it's the future/an alien culture" are suddenly brought to the front and centre and complained about, no matter how fitting they are in the setting. In warhammer 40k, for example- human society is largely consolidated into a decaying theocratic fascist empire- so many conservatives miss the point that that society is *awful* to a humorous degree, and love the Imperium. Standard stuff. But there's this one sect of humanity that is explicitly transhuman, the Adeptus Mechanicus, they worship a machine god and pursue extensive, often NEAR TOTAL, cybernetic augmentation to "bring themselves closer to the purity of the blessed machine". These are people who view *experiencing emotion* as a vice not to be indulged too often, and have been known to alter their brains so that they can logically decide whether or not it's warranted to experience *feelings* based on notifications that their "emotional core" has registered they should have felt an emotion. In a semi-recent novel, an Admech character explicitly identified as agender and used neo-pronouns to reflect that fact. Reading this, I didn't see it as pandering, or a win for progressive representation. It just makes sense. The admech want to be machines- and by their understanding, machines don't have sexes, they don't have genders. So they reject them as another vestigial weakness of the flesh. It's not positive representation, it's not endorsing or deriding those identities, it's just good worldbuilding, of course the admech would do that, that's kind of their entire deal- you love to see it. But then the rightoids just lost their shit over it, but they couldn't explain *why it was bad*, they all just called it woke. "The Imperium is fascist!!! I thought fascists hate woke!!???". They are literally incapable of imagining a society or character that doesn't function exactly the way they want it to, because it's the only way they believe it's even possible- they are so rooted in one way of thinking that they can't even conceive of the future being *different* from the now, not even brighter or better, just *different*. How can someone like that write a compelling fictional setting with such an embarrassing lack of imagination?.
Wow, this is brilliant. You've absolutely nailed it; sadly I doubt the people who need to hear it the most will listen :( easier to just turn your brain off and give in to the hate.

As a cis man, I love strong women in videogames and movies. But Rey in star wars was just plain bad writing. Sadly, that just made it all the easier for the anti woke crowd to target.
I also agree, Rey’s character made no sense at all and she was really non enjoyable character at all. It’s not that she can fight it’s that she literally goes through no tangible hardships ever. Like yes her backstory is not a positive one but her ability to just completely final boss everyone she comes into contact with is not related nor does it make me want to route for her.

You are proving that none of you actually listen to any argument that goes against your bias.

"Woke" is anything that make people think of politics, not anything political, anything that makes you THINK about stuff in the real world. They don't want to be challenged, just entertained.
100%. It’s the classic “just consume next thing” meme.
Don't ask questions, just consoom product then get exited for next product.

@vincentbatten4686 yeah exactly. It's like characters have to be exactly the same skin color and political affliation for these nonfans to like them. What is also ridiculous is that the people complaining about less sexualized female characters shame women in real life for even possibly maybe inching towards being somewhat sexual. Both of which seem to be things the chuds decry as "woke."
"As a writer, this change serves two purposes"
Holy crap, thank you! Every time people complain about a change and they don't question the narrative utility, it actually kind-of drives me insane. I'm so glad Domain(?) approached this from a logical perspective. The representation is nice, but it also just makes logical sense in the context of the script. I really feel like that's the type of thing people need to consider way more often when they get into actual media analysis.

Same thought here
@@Leukodinthey were, you are correct
and a fair amount of old scifi novels have unisex restrooms because the people on the ships are usually meant to be practical, trained professionals.
Here’s why they don’t complain about that in Starship Troopers!
It’s old. Old shit good. New shit woke. That’s literally their mindset.
The sad irony of Starship Troopers in a nutshell
The book was a bit fascist iirc, but the film seeks to mock that a bit.
Only to have fascists unironically love the message the film was warning against. Which I guess isn’t too shocking, since the anti woke crowd absolutely lacks any semblance of actual media literacy 🤷♀️
But Starship Troopers is fascist, they can't be against that!
(Yeah IK it's satire but I'm sure they don't realize that)
The problem with "woke," is everyone has their own definition. To me, i have used (and stopped for this reason) being overcorrective, ridiculous, trying to be offended by minute things. But there's the other side of the coin where people use the word as placeholder for anything that isn't considered "normal" by 1950s standards.
Exactly! It's so amorphous that there's no real definition to it, so it basically exists solely to dogwhistle to a certain ideology.
yeah, the media used to use the word liberal, until people stopped being offended by it. just like they used the word communist, then socialist, until people started genuinely started taking an interest in it. now everything is cultural marxism. they invent new words to otherize people every few years when the old one wears off.
Oh boy, poodle skirts, milkshakes, and racism! 😂 imagine thinking the 50’s is peak society…
@@sneedmando186i do love me a good shake tho

“Full of clothing zombies” nearly made me burst out laughing at work and cringe simultaneously. Imagine genuinely believing women can’t be beautiful or sexy unless they’re naked.
It’s such a succinct example of how they see depictions of women.
Thanks. This was a great commentary on the shallowness of anti woke culture. I'm glad I came across you. Love the earnings by the way.

While people *do* miss friends when they travel, it would feel a bit vapid and empty if she was comparing missing her friend to the serious longing Isaac has for his wife due to their long-distance relationship.
Woke is an excuse. It is a way to hate things without putting real effort into finding a reason to dislike it. They don't even need to watch or play something if it's "woke" its just bad. And if they watch it, they may like it and then need to change their mind and they can never do that.
Exactly

Ah yes, 'Luz Lane' XD
And yeah, it's not so much that Velma is bad because it's 'woke'. It's bad because it's bad. It's just that the current popular thing to do is race-mix casts and introduce more social progressive topics. Which means that you'll have both lots of media that does that well. And lost more media that does it badly. Because most of everything is crap.

My theory as to why they call kratos woke is he becomes a good parent.

@@YuriLunaris I didn't know that, I couldn't watch past the 1st ep, lol

Sadly it’s going to take a real leader to get everyone to shut up, listen, and follow. And I don’t see anyone in the near future being worthy of being a leader.
@@shcdemolisher I’m not sure why it’s difficult for people to stand up for what is right, and what they believe. How come there aren’t more proper leaders in the United States? It’s a question that needs an answer. (In general, I’m not loading that one onto you)
@@queenieevergreen (Thanks for clarifying. :))
That is a good question with a difficult answer, as there are multiple reasons why there aren't more proper leaders in the US.
Or we'll never get to a good society that future generations will be proud to be in, that paradise we all want for humanity to be in the stars.)
Being woke for the sake of being woke isn't interesting, it's the message and the ideas that you convey that are important
Great video btw :)
yeah now that you mention it, all of star wars pre and post disney takeover had serious political themes, just that once disney took over they pushed the ideas even further left rather than sticking to, as you mentioned, the diverse and free rebels fighting back against a tyrannical and homogenous force seeking to subdue and subjugate the galaxy, which kind of diminishes the impact.

It always floors me when theres a bathroom "controversy," like in Dead Space. The same chuds who decry unisex bathrooms in media, are the same type of chuds who adore movies like Starship Troopers. On top of their glaring media illiteracy, resulting in an inability to unpack the themes in that movie, they fail to note that unisex showers (and by extension bathrooms [because they arent going to segregate one but not the other]) exist.
SHARK earings??! I love them so much!💕
i will admit that i was on the "thats weird the mortal kombat women are fully clothed now" train but i wasnt like oh god neatherrealm is so fucking woke for me it was the fact that mortal kombat was always raunchy and so when i saw the newer games i didnt like the fact they turned that down but now looking at it from a different perspective i can see i was being a bit of asshole for thinking that way
I'm glad you compared Velma and Harley Quinn. Both are kinda similar: edgy HBO comedies based on existing franchises. Both are "woke" but one of them is actually good.
My favorite line is "So we're blowing up Todd after dinner" followed by "Todd doesn't work Wednesdays"
Test results came in....turns out im woke. Case is terminal. Im working with my family on hospice and end of life plans.
People being mad over a NB transformer is hilarious. Why would a robot have a gender anyways?
The only thing that makes me mad about Nightshade is that I can’t buy a toy of them yet.
2:44 She…she didn’t even say she _had_ a girlfriend, just that she’d rather listen to a potentially hypothetical girlfriend over her boss talk.
Thank you for watching!
In the first sequel movie, she:
- mostly has to run away and be chased off from multiple First Order encounters
- is captured by Kylo Ren effortlessly and put into a "Damsel in Distress" situation which is literally an anti-woke trope
- has to use slight of hand Jedi mind tricks / basic mindcontrol to escape the Starkiller base instead of ploughing through the troopers with minimally strategic brute force (pun intended)
- barely wins by the skin of her teeth on her last fight with Kylo Ren (who was already badly injured and spent at that point from being shot at by Chewie, killing his dad, and fighting with Finn)
This even applies to The Last Jedi (the one that's the most woke apparently)
- Rey is not the driving force of the plot for a majority of the movie (it's Poe, Leia, Luke, Admiral Holdo, Snoke, Kylo Ren, and Rose who are the more proactive characters)
- She has a mentor figure
- She literally confronts Snoke and gets easily taken a hold of by him
- Kylo Ren literally rescues her from Snoke
- She and Kylo Ren team up in order to win against the red guards
- Her lightsaber tug-of-war battle with Kylo Ren ends in a draw
- She literally has no idea how to get out of the destroyed ship and has to be picked up by Finn and Rose
- Her biggest feat in the movie when it comes to the force is... lifting rocks... to escape.
- She's literally not part of the fight in the final big battle confrontation (it was between Luke, Kylo Ren, and the elite ground forces of the First Order)
I'm not interested in defending her misconstrued characterization in The Rise of Skywalker since that movie is shit allround.
And even if she was an Over Powered fem-protag, storytellers have proven time and time again that you can make even problematic tropes good and digestible:
- Schindler's List can technically be categorized as a "white savior" story yet nobody talks smack about that in the movie (I wouldn't either, this movie is Goated)
- One Punch Man and especially Mob Psycho are basically the go-to when it comes to "OP but well-written"
- Gojo and Sukuna are literally the fan-favorite of Jujutsu Kaisen despite being OP characters within the context of the story
- Meruem from Hunter x Hunter (don't wanna spoil anything about him, but he is also fanfavorite-worthy character despite being OP)
- Bill Cypher from Gravity falls
- Frieren is a current standout
Simply put, stories can just be bad. Period. End of story.
I'm so glad I'm out of this mindset now
I can't believe people would criticize Dead Space for "going woke" when a perfectly valid reason for criticism, the fact that they made Isaac Clarke look like Adam Sandler, is right there
I'm a huge Mortal Kombat fan and I really don't understand the hatred people have for the newer character designs. More realistic athletic bodies just look more natural, and the characters not having to exclusively wear tiny bikinis means they can have so much more personality. In a game with very little dialogue, a costume that can convey a character's status and background is super important
I don’t get it AT ALL. The Mortal Kombat girls look better and better with each entry to me.
If everything is woke, nothing is woke.
Yep
*Cuts to someone screaming in a black void*
The scary thing about anti-wokeness is that after a certain point it becomes dogmatic, instead of wokeness being bad because it's cringe it becomes bad because it's woke, wokeness turns into a devil of sorts. I've seen people be willing to support really bad stuff because "at least it's not them wacky gays". At this point there's no longer a rationale behind it. Not to mention hating something is objectively worse then enjoying something.
Sidenote: "capitalism" is perhaps the single most deradicalizing word
in dead space, Kendra getting a girlfriend could also be a methode to NOT suggest isaac and kendra hooking up
it may sound weird for someone who played dead space, but the trope of the main hero getting together with the girl is a very previlent one. that actually happens in dead space 2.
so by isaac talking and talking to kendra, people might start to expect kendra and isaac hooking up.
but because she has "a girlfriend" people understand "oh, so this is not gonna happen then."
That is a valid point I hadn’t even considered!
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this!
Thank you for watching! I appreciate the support 🙏❤️
you know what i find sexy in a woman? confidence. Self esteem
HONK OFF! HONK OFF!!! IVE BEEN TRYING TO MAKE HONK OFF A THING FOR YEARS I LOVE YOU
Awh thank you! It’s my preferred term lol.
Wow, this is brilliant. You've absolutely nailed it; sadly I doubt the people who need to hear it the most will listen :( easier to just turn your brain off and give in to the hate.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I really branched out a bit with this one, and my next video essay will go even further into politics. I'm just glad so many people got to see this one!
@@deaddomain That sounds awesome, looking forward to seeing it!
Found this video after watching the video on infiltrating the hate church. I really appreciate how you cultivate and interact with your audience. Keep up the good work.
Growing up in a rural area in a 'blue' state, a lot of my experiences are mirrored in how you describe your experiences growing up. People do not realize how pervasive this type of hate (Christian 'love') is in American society and how much it can impact family and friends.
Thank you so much for commenting! I’m glad so many people can find commonality with my own experiences and theirs.
Gender neutral restrooms in space is logical, why tf would anyone waste room for segregated restrooms.
22:30 “Big Whitey” is a TRULY GIFTED turn of phrase and LONG overdue. Thanks!!!!!!!
I just discovered your content by this video. Don't worry about the perceived "mistakes" you made. I vaguely remembered that disclaimer towards the end and thought, "This was a great video essay."
I'd normally mention something from the video, but I think you touched all of the bases.
Thank you so much! If you enjoyed this one I recommend my Wolfenstein and Dishonored video essays next!
This is coming from a queer black fem.
"Woke" is everthing related to gays and black people included in something. But of course, theres no reason to fight racism...
They have literally become NPC's now, they are feigning anger at a female co-protagonist in GTA 6. It's just absurd how angry they get at absolutely everything
It amuses me when they get mad at media that isn't even released.
There are entire TH-cam channels just dedicated to coping over Marvel being "woke" and how those movies doing more poorly over time proves politics the uploaded doesn't like to be wrong, somehow.
I’ve dedicated a lot of time to some dumb stuff in my day but I seriously couldn’t fathom dedicating so much time to disliking something so ultimately meaningless
I don't want to be reductive of this video because the topic is important and calling out dog whistling is important, but I just had to say that I think your look in this video is impeccable, and the lighting really makes your eyes pop and look incredible.
Awh thank you 💕
