Hi Chris. To my knowledge, the squirt holes in the conrods were introduced with the early Commandos to squirt oil on the bottom of the pistons to cool them.
That's quite possible, but I'm not sure it's correct. Many conrods have oilways drilled all the up and into the small ends - those would both lubricate the small ends and serve to cool the pistons. I don't think that the oilway exits on a Commando conrod would allow oil to reach the pistons, and why would it matter which way round they were fitted if that's what they were for? So, on balance, I don't think that's correct (but I may be wrong! 😁)
