  • Buyer research guide. Features and a faux pas. This is an overview of the Behringer XR18 and the Midas MR18 digital audio consoles. XR18/MR18 101. A walk-through taking a look at the ethernet, USB, XLR and other connectors on the front panel, the preamps, and on through to the control software and finally the outputs. Gain staging, automix, compression, gates, monitor connections, live streaming, and other audio mixing concepts and features found on the X-Air console are discussed and shown. XR18 wifi discussed.
    An XR18 / MR18 tutorial and overview of the highlights and features. Behringer for beginners and refresher for more experienced users.
    The XR18 / MR 18 X-Air consoles can be controlled by PC and Apple Mac computers using X-Air Edit software (available for free download on the Behringer site), or by iPad and Android tablets using Mixing Station or Behringer software.
    These consoles also provide a 16 mic preamp USB audio interface for use with DAW software or streaming software and platforms.
    Used by bands, soloists, duos, techs, recording engineers, and musicians of all ages. Mixing from stage, mixing from FOH, or used as an audio interface for a studio or home studio and DAW. The 16 channels of automix make it perfectly suited for conference mixing.
    Even with the failings of the built-in wifi and its inability to handle heavy cellular traffic, and only 2.4G single band, the XR18 makes up for it in other features, size and price. Adding an external router for better connectivity onstage and outside of the rehearsal is a small price to pay for the total package.

I thought I knew this mixer (and I had been using it for about 4-years) until I started watching your videos. I use it for live, rehearsals, recording (tracks live), and also for my videos. You need a gold star. Keep up the tremendous work. You are fabulous!

    Good video highlighting some of the real weaknesses we've run into, especially the wireless. Thanks. I'll make a note of that suggestion. I need to do some MIDI research myself to make sure I don't miss something since I haven't had to use MIDI on it. For bands mixing themselves, MIDI would give some great options to mute FX or step thru settings.

    Wish I had someone like yourself that was at my rehearsal room and can work and show me stuff I'm having issues with or just stuff I don't know, which is a lot. Anyways always great content as usual.

    Grabbed an xr12 for acoustic and small gigs (x32 for full band) and these things are great... except for the damn wifi. I grabbed it for the band (upgrade from a mackie analog board), and used it at practice. First gig out, board was already set for the gig just needed minor tweaking. I used the built in wifi and had zero issues. Did our first set and Muted the board.. BIG MISTAKE! while on a small break the bar quickly filled up with college kids and we were eager to start again.. only... I could NOT connect to the mixer at all. I was screwed. no backup plan, just dead in the water. I shouldve unplugged the damn thing and went to a gas station to plug it in or something but we were stuck.. So I loaded up the jukebox with a ton of songs for them, and we packed up our gear. We also refused full payment, with our tails tucked between our legs, and I looked like the biggest A hole as I'm the one who lobbied for the xr12.. So heres the takeaway.. If youre using this for a small gig, a set it and forget it kind of thing, you can try and rely on the built in wifi as long as you dont plan on connecting to it. DON'T MUTE THE BOARD.. just turn off your speaker instead (thats what we do from now on). Grab a small wifi router and stick it in your bag. It will be the best $15 you'll spend. Otherwise I love these. Additionally, if you're gigging with other Music Tribe gear like Turbosound you can use the ultranet connection (cat5) and daisy chain all your speakers together with cat 5 and control everything via your tablet. Saves you on xlr cables. We use EV's but the option is nice to have.

      Hi. I am the lucky owner of the Midas MR18 console. However, I lack the ability to select indication meters 1-16 Pre fader and a post fader on analog inputs. I don't know if you understand me.
      I will explain another way. During playback while moving the fader of channels 1-16, I also need to see the change to indicator meters for each channel 1-16. Now this is not possible because the signal for the indicator meters is taken from before the fader.
      What do you think about it?
      Well thank you

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ml6245 If you use X-Air Edit and choose a channel, there will be two meters. The meter on the left is pre-fader and the meter on the right is post fader. This is only going to show you a post fader meter on a channel by channel basis though.
      Other method:
      If you choose "Setup" and go into the Monitor settings, you can make channel solo be AFL by ticking the box (monitor settings here is the engineer monitoring, not stage monitors). It's default is on PFL.
      Any channel you solo will now show post fader (AFL) on the solo meter.
      I don't know if either of those options is a workaround or not. I guess it depends on what you're looking to do in the end.
      Or maybe I'm not understanding your end goal?

    I’ve used this board in the past for years, stumbled upon the video cause I’m buying a new one for personal use, and yes. Worst part about this board is the built in WI-FI, I’ve had it screw us multiple times in gigs. (Even with an external router) Only other issue I’ve had was a few weird crashes that messed up the presets on the board, save your configs often.

    Alan thanks so much for these videos.. I'm learning a lot.
    Please can someone tell me if its possible to control the XR18 audio etc whilst also running and controlling stop/ start/ track select etc on a playlist within a laptop or MacBook / iPad connected to the XR18 via usb.. Can I control all this wirelessly from my iPhone or iPad whilst performing live etc.? I think I dropped an error when buying this unit thinking it had the same usb in/out as the smaller Behringer units and many of the other manufacturers units... All I want is to be wireless and in control of everything.

  • @boscoblair105
    @boscoblair105 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for this very nice overview of these units. The presentation was clear in terminology, demonstration, explanation and organization. Have you worked with the Soundcraft Ui16? I will be using one of these three units for live performances with a 5-piece band (drummer has an electronic kit). The XR18 has more than we need and the Ui16 seems to be the perfect configuration of inputs and outputs. The Ui16 also has the basic effects that we're needing, with overkill for us in the amp modeling; the XR18 seems to have overkill for us in the effects selection. We have only previously worked with analog mixing consoles. Both units appear to require external routers for reliability for different reasons. If you were choosing between these models for someone new to digital, especially wireless controlled digital, with 4 vocal inputs, 4 mic'd instruments, and electronic drum kit input, which would you choose?

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've not used the Soundcraft, although I've used plenty of Soundcraft consoles in the past (and liked them). The XR18 is the devil I know at this point, so I'd probably stick with that myself. One reason I got the XR18 is how similar it is to the X32 (and M32), so if you learn one, you basically know the other. I already owned X32's so it only made sense to get the XR18 for smaller stuff, and quick and easy transport.
      But starting from scratch?.... Hmmmm... I don't know what I'd chose in that case.

  • @sonicmoonshine4999
    @sonicmoonshine4999 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great videos as always. I love them. quick question though. Channel 1 and 2, can those be used for things other than direct acoustic or bass? Like vocals? Or should you avoid using those channels for anything other than direct acoustic or bass?

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can definitely use them for other things like drums, vocals, etc... FWIW as long as you use a DI, you can connect a bass or acoustic guitar to any channel as well.
      The XLR inputs function the same on all the channels, it's just that channels 1 and 2 have high impedance inputs in addition to the standard XLR inputs.

    Thanks for putting these tutorials out there, they are proving to be a valuable resource to me.

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio

      On the PC or Mac, X-Air Edit is solid and easy to follow. I like Mix Station for Android tablets. And I know there's a Mix Station version for iPad as well. I always found Mix Station more intuitive than Behringer's own iPad app, but I'm more used to it since I use Android for tablet mixing.
      Some people can get around on the tablet version as well as the PC software, even for configurations. For configuring things, I like X-Air Edit because there's so much stuff on the screen at once. So it's easier to follow and get to the steps. For mixing though, I'm good with either.
      I need to load JamKazam and try it out. I've just never gotten around to trying it.

    Thank you for your videos, they're amazing! I have a question (I'm still fairly new to sound mixing and these videos have been a life savers).
    I've heard you emphasize that everything follows the gain control in multiple videos. Once you've completed soundcheck,what use case is there for using the faders versus adjusting the gain control?
    Example: The lead guitarist uses his amp as a monitor and turns it up as the night goes on because he can't hear himself. At that point, I would expect to see the input gain rise above -18 dbfs and I would think the corrective action would be to adjust the gain control... I actually can't think of a scenario where I would use the faders anymore.
    Any advice?
    Thanks again!!

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes.... if his level increases drastically then you could cut the gain and it be back to where you started for everything. Buy if it's just a small increase its probably not worth the reset unless all of a sudden the other musicians notice he got louder and it's creating mon mix problems. It's a balancing act because it could be they'd notice you turning down more than him turning up. But definitely watch for it being close to clip. Don't let that happen

      They both have the same FW updates available. Technically, I think the updates might even be the same files, but as for whether you could DL the MR18 FW and load it into the XR18... I don't know. IIRC you can load either, but the unit won't suddenly call itself an MR18.

    How do you SIMPLY send the XR18's FX and EQ to a DAW along WITH the dry signal for each track?
    Our XR18's mix sounds perfect LIVE, and that's exactly what I want the computer to record! I DON'T want to add FX and EX to the tracks in the DAW later!

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This question was in a couple of threads, and the answer was kind of long so I am just going to paste it here:
      If you just want to send the complete mix, EQ and FX, to a stereo mix, then just go into IN/OUT on X-Air Edit then tab over to USB Sends and move USB1 and USB2 over to Main L (USB1) and Main R (USB2).That will capture all of your channel EQ, gates, comps, subgroup things, and FX exactly as it's fed to the house.
      If you leave the default red ring up then it WON'T capture the house EQ or fader changes.
      If you want to capture the house EQ/processing too, change it to the blue ring by right clicking on it in the graph. If you even want it tracking your master fader changes, the change it to the cyan color ring.
      Then your DAW can record your stereo mix on tracks 1 and 2.
      If you want to record ALL of the tracks separately, but with EQ, comp etc.... Then for each channel you're using, change the ring to Pink/Magenta in the USB Sends page on each channel. And if you want FX this way too...
      To get the FX, probably the simplest way to get all of your FX, and assuming you don't have 8 open channels, is to setup a stereo subgroup and route all the FX there instead of the house on the FX returns. The route the subgroup to the house and run it at unity.
      So, you'll get FX acting the same as normal, just taking an extra step to get to the mains.
      But this lets you route the two busses you used to create a subgroup, via USB, to let's say USB 17 and USB 18. That means your FX will be on tracks 17 and 18 in your DAW.
      You can route that subgroup to any unused USB channels. Example: If your band uses 12 channels, then you'd be free to assign USB13 and USB14 to your two Busses that you made into a subgroup for your FX.
      If you're using all 18 channels of the XR18 for your band, and want to record 18 sep tracks to the DAW, PLUS get your FX too, then I don't think there's a way.

      I use Mixing Station software and have always just used an Android tablet with it... And X-Air Edit at home. I don't own an iPad so I can't really say whether you might like that better or not. I think it's probably whatever people get used to that they like the best. But right now, the iPad XR software won't work on iPads that have upgraded to the newest OS. Behringer has released a beta finally to begin addressing that. But Mixing Station on the iPad works fine... just as it does on the Android... and there's also a desktop version of it now too.

      I believe that is correct. It'll definitely mute in the house, but you still would hear it soloed in the headphones I think. Usually, I have the channel fader down instead of muting the channel at soundcheck. I might mute all the channels, then pull the one down I'm working on at soundcheck so I can roughly (and slowly) put it back where it was if I'm working with a band and wanting to maintain the initial mix as a baseline to start.

      Load MIXER to PC or else it will overwrite the settings in the console. Loading mixer to PA will load whatever the last show was when you shut the XR18 off, onto the PC. The second you load PC to Mixer it will overwrite it.
      So, Mixer to PC is what you want to save that. Then, once it loads, on the PC choose Save and then Save to Scene to save that current scene on your PC. That way, even if you mess up the next time and erase your scene, you can still load it from the scene you saved on that PC.

      This video is for Reaper (DAW) but the parts about the MR18 set up would be the same regardless of the DAW you're using. th-cam.com/video/xYmJGyroVe0/w-d-xo.html
      If you're doing all of that, I'd make sure and swap out USB cables to make sure that isn't the problem. And also, max length on the USB cable is roughly 15'... so if your USB cable is close to that length, or longer, definitely try a shorter cable.
      If the shorter USB cable works, BUT you need a longer one for logistical reasons, you can get an active USB cable. But first things first, just try to make sure it's working.
      Also, just in case, I'll mention this- You have to use USB for audio. The Ethernet connection (or Wifi) is only for control functions. You can use both at the same time so that control and audio are on the same computer if you want, but for audio to PA/Mac, there has to be that USB connection.

    Might be a bit of a duh question, but if you use it as an audio interface, can you just record the whole mix or can you record several inputs separately? I'd like to use it to record guitar, bass and drums at the same time, but each in different tacks so I can edit them later in the DAW. Any experience on latency using software guitar amps and monitoring with headphones plugged in the xr18?

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Definitely can record individual tracks. It's 18x18. So you can record 18 tracks from the XR18. You can choose whether to send the inputs directly to the DAW, or you can sub-mix some things into subgroups and send a combination of subgroups and individual channels into the DAW.
      If you did happen to want to record just a stereo mix, you'd just go into the USB routing and assign the main L-R outputs to also feed a couple of USB outs... like USB 1 and USB 2 (for example).
      Essentially, you have 18 USB outputs you can assign in the routing to come from channels or buses.
      This is an older video I have on the channel, but it explains how to connect Reaper to the XR18/MR18 and record individual tracks. Any DAW will be essentially the same:

    Hi this is really helpful. I have a P16M, I’ve tried to insert FX ( reverb) into the routing options but I’m frustrated as I’ve been unsuccessful thus far. Please help :)

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately, I don't have a P16 to actually walk thru this. I've set them up on service calls for X32's... So I have some idea what you need to do on the XR18, but not 100%.
      You have to lose at least one channel on the XR18 to take it from being connected to a mic pre (or other bus) and switch it to your reverb.
      So, let's assume you're not using channel 16 on the XR18. So in the routing (In/Out) and then in the Ultranet tab you need to move Ultranet 16 circle in the graph to your reverb.
      Did you get that far already?
      Now we're at the part where I really need a P16 in front of me to test. Let's say your reverb is in the FX rack in slot 1.
      If the section marked FX is the FX Returns, then you need to move that circle from channel to FX 1L.
      It's possible though that it should/could be EFFECT 1.
      Either way that happens to be correct, you still need to turn the FX send up on the channel(s) you want reverb on. Example: Vocal 1, bring up FX1 bus to bring the verb up on the channel.
      And make sure the FX Return (and FX Send) #1 faders are up (unity for now... tweak if need be later).
      Now, on the P16 when you bring up channel 16 you should hear your reverb.
      If you DON'T want that reverb in the house, then select the FX Return for FX1 (or whatever one you end up using, but that is the one we're using in this example)... and in the MAIN tab of the selected channel (FX1 return), DE-select L-R. You would want it grayed out to remove the reverb from the house.
      Now, I know I only selected 1L in the Ultranet routing tab. That was so you could only burn one of your mic channels to replace it with a reverb line on the P16. So you'd get mono reverb and you'd use the PAN control on the P16 (ch 16) to pan it to the center.
      You could burn two inputs on the XR18 if you don't use them and move, say 15 and 16 to FX 1L and FX 1R and pan them left and right on the P16.... and I believe that is all you need to do to get stereo verb to you P16.
      But... like I said... I don't have a P16 here to connect to the XR18 and double check all of this. Although, it has to be close to this. If I'm missing something, hopefully I still managed to get you the piece of the puzzle you were missing. ;)

    I see the Midas MR18 and Behringer XR18 look very much alike and Behringer says it has the Midas preamps inside. Midas is a little bit more expensive. What are the main differences? Built quality? Sound? Features? Is it worth paying the extra for Midas?

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say the main difference is the preamps. Between the X32 and an M32 there is some build quality differences with better faders for one thing. And aesthetics and ergonomics. But the XR vs MR doesn't have that. No faders and same basic design with them.
      I guess the MR18 also uses Neutrik branded connectors but there's nothing wrong with the connectors that the XR18 has. IIRC, the MR might use locking connectors while I know the XR18 doesn't have locking connectors, but I don't really have an issue with non-locking connectors.
      But it really depends on what you're doing with it... it's not like the preamps in the XR18 are bad. If money is no object, then get the MR18, but if bang for the buck is the object, get the XR18. The XR18 is certainly more than good enough, and for live work, unless you have a premium sound system and/or play in quiet venues where subtle differences can really be heard, then the audio differences are likely negated anyway.
      If you're recording, then that might swing things the other way, but whether anyone but yourself would notice the difference in a recorded mix between the two products would be debatable.
      There used to be a 10yr warranty on the MR18 which added to the value, but it's the same 3 yr warranty now.

    • @DanHughes87
      @DanHughes87 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The main two differences are that the behringer XR18 has MIDAS designed preamps (capturing audio at a sample rate of 48kHz) and the Midas MR18 has superior MIDAS Pro preamps (capturing audio at a sample rate of 96kHz). The Midas MR18 also has locking XLR connectors which the behringer XR18 does not. Aesthetically, they are almost identical.

      I can't think of any way under the current situation that you have, although if you're not adverse to buying another XR18 and an analog splitter, you could run one XR18 as a dedicated monitor console and the other as FOH. So the FOH one could feed mains and your stream, while the other, acting as a dedicated monitor console could feed 6 mono monitor mixes AND a stereo mix via the L-R (since the other XR18 would be handling the mains).

And then amps/speakers OFF first so they don't amplify that pop. If it's a different kind of noise, something sustained, then it could be a hardware problem.

    Can I do piano LR through aux 17/18? So they can be stereo ?

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The quick answer is yes.
      The caveats are to make sure you're using instrument cable and not speaker cable, and to keep the instrument cable lengths to a reasonable amount. IOW, not trying to run the key lines 40'-50'-75'-100' with instrument cable. 10-20' is perfectly fine. And you can probably get away with 30'. After that it definitely gets questionable because of noise that is picked up by the unbalanced lines (and maybe even at that 30' point it could be questionable). If you do need to run long lengths, that's where a DI (or two DIs or a stereo DI) and the XLR channels and preamps come into play. You can stereo link the XLR channels with the odd numbered channel being first, so there's an easy way to do stereo without using the AUX in. But as long as you don't get tripped up by the caveats, then the Aux In channels can certainly work as well.
      These two video talk about instrument cables and DIs:

    How do we use effects like reverb with ultranet p16?

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't have a P16 so no way to demonstrate but essentially you need to go into the X-Air routing for the Ultranet and take one of the sends and assign it to an FX return. There are some other (less conventional) ways... like assigning the FX to go to a subgroup and assigning the subgroup to L-R for you house FX plus in the Ultranet routing, changing one of the 16 ultranet sends to be from that same subgroup. That would let you capture multiple FX (like a delay and reverb) on just one ultranet channel.
      Essentially, once you have the Ultranet routing in place, the rest of it works in the same basic manner as described for sending FX to monitors in this video (although this video not using Ultranet specifically so it's more just the concept of reverb to mons and how that works that you're seeing here):

    If you select pc to mixer how do you redo that option

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't. Once you overwrite the 1 saved scene in the XR18, it's gone. Scenes are saved in the controlling device (like your tablet, iPad, computer...). But only when you initiate a SAVE. The XR18 just saves the current last state of the mixer... so as soon as you change the mixer, that is gone. So, PC to Mixer would be changing that former last state of the mixer. There's nothing to recall because it's gone.
      Snippets are saved in the mixer, but not scenes. Except, like I said, the mixer always remembers the last state it was in until the operator makes a change.
      Always a good idea to save your baseline scene in your controlling device, or save your most recent band scene for future reference (or backup) before shutting down the mixer.
      And load Mixer to PC and save the scene to the PC before making changes (to avoid accidentally erasing an important show scene before saving it).

      Everything will be at whatever point the wifi dropped. So, your mix will be exactly what it was the moment before the wifi dropped. Sound still rolling along.
      Which is good if you at least need to keep sound rolling...
      Or bad if the channels are muted and the set is about to begin and the MC says "And now.... the band!!!" and you try and unmute and it's offline, and won't reconnect.
      That's really the major bugaboo, it's not just that it will start losing connection when wifi traffic gets heavy, but that it won't always reconnect after it does lose signal. Or balk and take multiple tries. And once you're in that situation, it's probably not going to resolve itself until the cell traffic thins. So, constant disconnects, trouble reconnecting, and maybe not reconnecting at all.
      Just about any other router will be more robust, and a dual band router, even more robust. And there will be ports so that you can even have a backup laptop connected at all times for redundancy if you want it. On the XR, you have to switch over to the laptop by switching off wifi, connect the ethernet cable, and go thru the routine of the laptop finding it and all of that.
      Whereas, that laptop could be connected via hardwire and running all along, even with your wifi engaged too, with an external router.

    Curious question. Does the xair mixers have options to delay individual aux outs and the main output? I am going to be designing/installing a house system in a bowling alley and I will be setting up zones, but do not want latency issues, as I will be spacing small cabinets throughout the house for coverage but the subs will be only in 1 zone above the lanes but cover the whole house. The building isn't that large, but the owner wants the kind of quality sound like when I set up my PA for a show. The jukebox company's setup he doesn't like one bit.
    I want to avoid having to have outboard dsp for each zone to keep them all in time/phase with each other as people move around the house.

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can load a delay effect into the FX rack (most people seem to use the pitch shift since it has delay on it and is dead simple to use and pitch shift itself can be set at zero) and then insert that into an output bus. Dual unit for independent or stereo unit for a stereo bus.
      Unfortunately, that's the only way short of external devices... so if you have the FX rack filled with things you can't give up and need more busses delayed than you have slots, external is the only option.

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's such a subjective thing that it's really hard to say. First off, the XR18 doesn't sound bad, so it's not like with one mixer your PA won't sound good, and with the other it'll sound great.
      It also matters the rooms you'll be playing in and the PA you'll be connecting to. The smaller the rooms, the more crowd noise, the smaller the PA, the less it's going to really be possible to hear the difference anyway. If you're using it for recording, you'll probably notice a bit more difference since that listening environment will make it easier to discern subtle differences. But that said, once the mix is done and people are listening on phones and cheap earpieces, they're probably not really going to hear the differences that you heard.
      But then there's also the question of affordability... If you have the money and nothing else better to spend it on, if you get the MR18 you'll know you have the best of the two options and won't have to wonder about whether you should've gotten the MR18 if you would have purchased the XR18 instead.
      OTOH, if money is tight, you'll be absolutely fine with the XR18. It's not going to hurt your sound and works perfectly fine as is.
      We're really talking about subjective differences and not HUGE differences between the two consoles. I believe the MR uses different XLR connectors too (maybe locking?) but that has never really been an issue that would sway my decision.
      The X32 vs M32 debate has a little more meat on the bone because the M32 adds upgraded faders and a different surface layout to the equation... But the XR18 and MR18 have no surface to upgrade or change.

    • @QrchackOfficial
      @QrchackOfficial 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@AlanHamiltonAudio There's more than "subjective differences" between the two.
      The Midas has locking XLR/TRS combo connectors, but at the cost of no Hi-Z inputs - if you plug in your bass direct, this means you now have to carry DI boxes and not just your mixer.
      The output level is mildly higher on the Midas, your outputs can go +5dB compared to the Behringer, hardly a difference as these days most mixers and speakers do not have the problem of being too quiet, quite the opposite actually.
      Midas has a different preamp design, similar to X32 vs M32, if you can hear the difference through a budget PA system (which is what you'd be using with a budget, $500 mixer that emphasises portability, rehearsal rooms and the like), then I applaud your golden ears. The audience won't be listening through audiophile headphones either, so... eh
      Supposedly you can buy extended warranty to 5 years instead of just 3 years on the Midas, but I'm yet to find a person who actually did buy this.
      Overall, the TLDR is you get locking XLR but you have to carry DI boxes, and you pay more for it. For me that's a pass, XR18 all the way.

      @@Maggot2767 You're in a "can't get there from here" predicament at the root, without spending more money. Even if you bought another XR18 and used one as a dedicated FOH mixer, used another with an analog splitter as a dedicated monitor console: th-cam.com/video/xT9gTBFxvZk/w-d-xo.html
      ...you'd still be limited to 4 stereo mixes:
      th-cam.com/video/Zf83kolgVzk/w-d-xo.html
      Obviously, you can feed a mono mix to both ears and fit five mixes on an XR18/MR18 and still mix FOH from that same mixer...
      So, for stereo ears, the next thing to look at would be for each musician to have a Behringer P16M. Or at least 2 of the musicians, because once you have 2 musicians using the Behringer P16M via Ultralink (ethernet cable) then you could dedicate to the 6 aux outs on the XR18 to feed 3 stereo mixes (link the outputs (see the second video I linked above). You can only have 16 things in the P16M, so, for example, if you were using all 16 XLR inputs (and also wanted FX in the ears), you'd need to submix something so that it only took one channel of the P16. All drums for example.
      And if you create a submix, you lose one of the 6 busses on the XR18... which then kills one of your stereo mixes FROM the XR18. Which would mean you'd need to add another P16. I'm not sure what the total number of P16M's is that you can have. Pretty sure it's easily more than 5.

      OTOH, if you're going for something like Aux fed subs, then you'd connect differently, but still need to address crossover points somehow.
      This video is about Aux Fed subs, but it also talks about the crossover issues and options you're likely to find on powered subs and the rest of your system:

    The Wifi on these things is so terrible. They should have either spent a little more to get it right or to just not include it.

      Definitely not a 'feature' for use anywhere that the wifi is mission critical.

      I've never had a problem with it....
      It's issues can't be simple.
      Might be that there is only 1 other wifi network nearby, and possibly that there are fewer than "normal" devices in range.
      Perhaps it is poor management / performance when wifi channels overlap.

    What’s with the solo button, if you hit it by accident it will ruin your day!

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You must have it changed from its default setting or using something unintended (like your headphone out feeding a stream feed, house feed, monitor... etc... ). With the default setting the only thing that should happen when pressing SOLO is your headphones should be fed whatever you solo'ed so you can hear it by itself in the headphones and the SOLO meter should show you the solo'ed channel's (or bus') level. Stage monitors, house feed, XLR outs, etc. should not change.
      My best guess as to what you might have going on-
      On X-Air Edit, go to IN/OUT and tab over to MAIN OUT and make sure the MAIN is connected to MAIN L/R and not to Monitor.
      On that graph that you see: Phones should be (by default) MONITOR (which is normally what you want) and Main should be Main L/R by default (which is again, normally what you want).

      The heatshrink on it? That cable is probably at least 20 years old. It's definitely seen some gig duty.
