Risk of Rain 2 Void Ending Cutscene [cut content]

  • Apparently hopoo was already working on a cutscene but it wasn't finished quite yet.
    My theory as to why they didn't put this in is based on the item Newly Hatched Zoea, which allows you to get a void ally (void reaver, jailor and destroyer).
    Because (in my opinion) this cutscene implies void creatures are a hivemind, or at least depend on the voidling in some way. What happened so the void reavers come to your aid? It could be to protect the hatched child, but we don't know.
    From what i've heard in the official discord, hopoo probably changed the direction they wanted to take the story in, so that's why no cutscene was implemented in the main game, but i could be wrong, so don't take my word for it.
    In any case, since this unfinished cutscene actually exists im guessing hopoo is working on fleshing it out for the next update or two? We'll see i guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Man my ONE CRITICISM with this update (Other than the lunar pauldrons) is how the game just... ENDS after you kill voidling, after a large and hard fight I wish there was SOMETHING interesting at the end, like with Mythrix when you get to escape and fly away.

      @@Polaris5664 it goes well with shaped glass. instead of having to compensate glass with hp items that are generally inconsistent or bad, you can compensate with more consistent movement speed items.
      plus it doubles infusion and it feels good to tank brass contraptiona for once.
      (also its good with artifact of command)

      It turns movement speed into durability. Grab one if you feel you can afford to slow down. If you're a speed junkie I can see why you'd hate it, but doubling your hp pool is pretty substantial. Mul-T, the heretic, engineer's turrets, and acrid all get massive value out of the health boost. Technically loader too, but movespeed is more valuable on her, so don't do that.

    im glad we could atleast see this, i really was dissapointed to finish the voidling bossfight the first time and discover that the "alternate ending" was literally just an you died screen with "fate unknown"

      Yep, its significantly harder and riskier than just looping to stage 8, yet has identical reward to obliterating. Same lunar coins, same ending, not any easier or faster than mithrix. There really should be some pay off for doing it.

      + You can get to him earlier than mithrix, potentially stage 2 if you can do void fields.

      @Julo Micha IMO the lunar coin rewards for doing a run need to be reworked in general, Mithrix and Voidling should give 20 on monsoon, and on monsoon every stage post-loop should grant you 1 coin guaranteed on top of whatever drops randomly
      I know someone is just going to reply with "just cheat them in 5head lol" instead of giving an actual reason why it's a good thing that the game doesn't reward you for doing better but the thing with editing them in is that the value of dopamine coins disappears entirely if you just have an infinite amount. But with how expensive it can be to actually get the lunar items you want it just means you barely get to use them, especially considering how half the items in the shop are complete trash

    Even though this is a pretty good cutscene, the fact that they decided to take the story in another direction means that my take on the story with the voidling being a smaller version of something big, is still plausible. Because usually -ling is associated with it being a smaller version of something.

      @@noble6677 'ling' is a different suffix meaning 'one connected with or having the quality of hireling.' meaning this thing is below or serving something else which is why it's death doesn't stop the void creatures

    In a recent QnA, Hopoo games stated that the voidling ending cutscene was not up to a standard, and they also had second thoughts to how the ending should play out. This is to avoid further confusion about this topic as to why the void lore is left being so vague.

    I’m hoping this gets added back in an update, the “fate unknown” ending for this final boss compared to escaping the moon and seeing it get taken by void reavers after beating Mithrix is much less interesting, and this cutscene shows that all the void enemies will die without Voidling, and that shows more why you actually fought it.

      @@xflyinglizardx Arguable to be fair, it was clear Mithrix was holding back the Void beings from invading either worlds, the newt clearly has managed to stave off hordes of Void Reavers, and even as a method for you releasing those from their cells. Combine that with the fact there are many godlike beings, there may be more to the world than just the voidling. It definatly isn't the peak

    Makes a lot of sense why its cut, but I really hope they add some sort of cutscene. Right now the ending feels very very lame considering how hard getting to and beating the boss is. Mithrix has the whole escape sequence, end credits, and unique survivor escape quotes. Having none of that with a harder boss makes it feel very unrewarding, and honestly pointless once you unlock the new survivor. I really think there should be some extra reward for the effort and risk there.

    Dang this wouldve been so much better than basically an alternative obliteration ending. Hopefully someone finishes it and ads it has a mod cuz man did i feel kinda disapointed when i saw no new ending cutscene at all(still good dlc though)

      i think that through reading the item descriptions, the portal that the survivors go through doesnt lead out, it leads deeper. why else would we have the void fiend.

My theory is that this has ties to the planetarium log and the voidling log where it talks about the simulacrum, where even death isnt the end and you spend god knows how many lives living in a simulation, but i might be wrong.

      I believe this didn't go out since there are more plans for void related lore than just Voidling = brains of all that is void. The current iteration is like an unfinished chapter, more to be told and more fitting to the current narrative of void leading only deeper into the cycle instead of letting you somehow stop it.

    Not sure why this was cut considering they even specifically announced an "alternate ending". I don't see the screen fading to black as an ending. I'm not bashing the devs here, I still love the DLC I'm just saying this seems like a weird decision on their end.

      I feel it is because in the lore, someone else who "beat" the Voidling actually went on to live a long life, but they were back in the planetarium when they died, suggesting that you never actually *beat* the Voidling, rather just mildly inconvenience it, and so it toys with you. This was likely a last-second change, and they did not have the time to make a new cutscene.

      @@quinnmaster504 from a narrative perspective it also really fits that cosmic horror of "you're in here forever" which even with a cutscene i feel makes Void ending possibly the worst ending (narratively). but I wonder if a new cutscene or a glimmer of hope can happen from here.

      @@phial7616 It is even worse when you think that the Void Ending is actually cannon, it already happened at our game of RoR2 takes place after that.
      Every run to Obliterate, Mythrix, Void, or death is part of this infinite loop of testing. Fate Unknown when you win is just them deciding "Time to reset the replication and see what they do this time."

    this ending make sense should you kill mithrix, pet the glass frog, then kill voidling; killing mithrix triggers voidling to send void reavers through to petrichor to claim whats left after mithrixs death, which gives a bit more nuance to this ending.. kind of. at least thats my headcannon.
    Also poor vermin shaking afraid of the reavers lol

    One thing I like is how that one Blind Vermin was trying to hide in HORROR knowing that the Void Reavers were there.
    They are blind, but they can't hear whether they are dead or not as all the Blind Vermin can do is hope and pray that they won't do anything to the rat.
    It just shows that all creatures, even as players, should fear the Void.

    i think the main reason the cutscene was removed was to keep the ambiguity of the voidling ending as the planetarium entry basically states that once you enter you can never truly know if you escape or if you're trapped in a loop being analyzed by the real voidling

    Considering they cut this cutscene which obviously has so much finality to it, I reckon it could be possible we see another void themed update in the future. We know that the expansion packs are all going to follow a theme, but with this being cut, I wouldn't be surprised if we maybe saw like a part 2 to survivors of the void. Either that, or maybe they do like an "anniversary update" style update with a bit of new content and some QOL changes to flesh out the ending of Survivors of the void

      Mithrix details his plans for getting back at his brother who betrayed him, noticing Earth and planning on destroying it by building a Grander Teleporter to get there, all to see the look on Providence's face.

    i really like that this was cut out, cause then it wouldn’t give the player a sense of mystery of what you did
    i love the feeling that even though you fought a massive creature of the void, you still did nothing to stop anything, but only made a mistake by entering the void
    according to logbooks, there’s no way out of the void, with the only option being to go deeper into the void
    and there’s still many unknown things lurking in the deep void, maybe making everything you fought seem like nothing in comparison
    after all, you were never tasked to be a hero for the mission. you just needed to find some missing cargo from the Contact Light and get out of there
    in the first game, all you’ve done was create more problems than there already were for Petrichor V and it’s inhabitants, as it was only defending itself from you. you may have wanted to save yourself, but you’ve doomed a whole planet of dying species to being its next victim of the void
    and in the second game, you’ve not only went to go get some lost cargo on a secret “rescue” operation and leave, but you’ve killed another god, one with the lust for power
    you may have unintentionally saved Petrichor V from a bloody massacre from power-hungry god, but now everything can and will be lost to the void, as the moon instantly was
    and putting everything in view, you were never the protagonist in the overarching story there was, as all you did was push yourself into this, destroying everything there was
    i love that feeling of emptiness

    To be honest I prefer the current "ending". Hopoo games don't really tell happy stories, they tell tragedies. Stories where the outcome could have been better had the characters literally been anyone other than themselves. While this isn't entirely visible in ROR1, Deadbolt tells the story of a reaper who wanted a friend, and a god who could not reciprocate.
    Risk of Rain 2 tells the story of two brothers doomed to be enemies simplyby virtue of who they are as people. Mithrix was too proud, too angry, and Providence too quiet, too unresisting until the breaking point. Neither of the two ever sat down and really talked to each other, which is funny in that Hopoo brand of tragically funny, because the two of them were the only ones they could really talk to. Imagine somehow having communication issues when there's only two of you on a planet for centuries.
    I read the "victory" in the DLC as the player simply going deeper. Noone can fathom the soundless depths. You go deeper than even the voidling could go. Into the infinite void, true death and absence free of any threats remaining.

    honestly just think this could be a partial ending/mod to the already existant game, kill the void hatchling/hive mind and just continue the gameplay with no reavers getting in the way

    I was pretty disappointed by the new alternate "ending" which has less flare than even the secret scavenger boss fade to white. It seems like Hopoo bit off a little bit more than they could chew with this expansion and it needed just another month or two of polish. Still a great expansion but there are a fair amount of bugs not in the base game that have been added, balancing issues with the void, a half baked alt ending, unobtainable items, etc. For the price, it's easily worth it but that doesn't mean that thinking critically about it is taboo

      I don't know, look at the lore books.
      The base ending actually makes perfect sense, you're looping for an eternity trapped in the Simulacrum, thinking you escaped. Each run of the game is an infinite hell and the reason it just ends when you "Win" in the void is there is nothing left.
      Then if you do certain things the Void Creatures give you a few more toys to play with in testing.
      It also makes the typed text at the end of Mythrix when you escape all the more disturbing.
      This ending... is what happened just before RoR2 started. It is possible at least just the Commando made it to the Simulacrum if not everyone.

    in one of the items logs it says something about the void and that all you do is go deeper, and deeper, and deeper
    there are bigger and much more dangerous monsters the more layers you go into, thats why at the end of the voidling boss fight you just go deeper, maybe you do end up killing something bigger but who knows, at this point your character is lost to the void

    Its hard to see where hopoo games can go from here to be honest, they would kinda get stuck if they made the void part of the game/story end right here, like what the cut scene implies.
    The most reasonable idea is that they didn't choose to place a cut scene just yet, since that can cut dramatically what they can expand on in the future.
    Like what another guy commented here, the -ing in Voindling, implies that or, its smaller version of something bigger or, that its still just growing and that there's more of them out there and that is a possible expansion that they can do later.
    Personally , story wise, i would like to see more stuff around brass contraptions, that enemy feels out of place in the game, there isn't a stage that you just point to and say "it comes from there", the only ones i can think of is the desert level on stage 2 and the new stage to level, but it still kinda feels far fetched to some extent.
    That's all I could come up with.

    Pretty creepy and chilling without music, and the lone portal at the end could mean that whatever could've been in control maybe wasn't the Voidling since it is turned off like a robot, so whatever steps through that portal could be whoever is making the void creations and is simply either coming to rebuilt or resurrect the Voidling, god I wish this cutscene gets added in soon, maybe with a quote at the end when it's all black like "Let's try that again, this time, only more calculated" my guess would be that the voice could be Providence, but this is all my fancanon bull.

    I don't really agree with your assessment in the description, simply because the Zoea could be some kind of larval form of the hive mind leader and simply just allows you to override the hive mind of specific specimens. If the logbooks somehow imply the void creatures AREN'T a hive mind then I'll accept that, but you probably should mention that in the description rather than one item that isn't that hard to explain.

    TBH, i like that this was cut.
    All ROR endings are ment to feel like a hollow victory, the cutscene provided to much certainty.
    I like the idea that the void creatures arn't necessarily good or evil, just diffrent. For all you know you killed something unique and beautiful to ensure YOUR survival, and you have to carry on even if that makes you the bad guy

    I think the weird kind of cliffhanger ending is either A) A reference to the planetarium logbook and how the people thought they killed the voidling and lived out a life only to end back in the void simulacrum (we’re stuck in a simulation loop. Or B) it’s a cliffhanger for another DLC to build off of.

    I always assumed voidling was a powerful being the void(space police) captured so by killing him it would make no sense how killing him just shuts down the rest of the guys, so this getting scrapped makes sense in my mind and you getting a fade to black is the same as the alternative obliterate which is basically just you are now trapped there forever. Now contained, taking the place of the voidling as you have surpassed it in power and as I see it the smaller the cell number the higher the threat. Now look at you, one of the strongest beings in the ror universe contained forever, within the void

    In my (maybe stupid opinion) when we're kills Voidling, we're not even wins, because as The Planetarium location lore says, this whole place is big simulacrum. It also tells us story of one of the survivors who even killed Voidling (I suppose it was Voidling) a few times and got escaped and lived a whole life but after a while still woke up in this place and started new simulation. Also the portal called "Portal?" which leads us to unknown results, not only to "win" scenario. I think it sounds little janky but i really like this theory

    It feels like a lot of stuff in the DLC was rushed. The fire bug for example is really busted and has outright made a friend stop playing the game. I wish they had more time, because what's there in the DLC is really cool. :(

    I also kinda wished for a new ending cutscene, but this one, as cool as it looks it just doesn’t make any sense lore wise.
    Voidling explodes on death like other void enemies, having something left behind would be pretty weird (I know that when we defeat mithrix we don’t see his helmet thingy in game, but that wouldn’t make it completely disappear out of nowhere) shutting void entities wouldn’t make sense for the void fiend, tho would be cool to see every void item to be shut down.
    We still wouldn’t know where the survivors would end up, but this cutscene only suggests that they would go back to somewhere that isn’t the void, potentially on petrichor V or earth, which isn’t that much mysterious or confusing which kinda kills the point of the “fate unknown” ending
    I’m pretty sure I missed a lot of points that I could’ve mentioned or didn’t even know, but lore was never one of my priorities, I like how they implement lore in this game and I’m enjoying every second of this update, so I wouldn’t go as harsh as some people might when it comes to lore, because I’m always gameplay first

    I wish the story connected to the mithrix ending, where you escape and the moon gets teleported into the void, having mithrix be revived and creating void creatures

      This gives me idea, what if in the original ending, the void creatures tried to preserve mithrix's existence?
      It is mentioned in one of the newer logs that creatures, weapons etc are stored as some form of organized juices of atoms, ready for testing. Since Providence was protecting Petrichor V from void creatures (bottled chaos log), and he's dead, they could come out, but couldnt face mithrix until you kill him, deeming the player more powerful and trying to capture him, too, along with the moon
      We still dont know the intents of void creature other than to play with whatever they capture.

      @@lapchaell Funny, there is a type of imp that seems to be native of the first risk of rain planet. It seems that they were a lot older than Mithrix and Providence, and where banned and try to re-have the planet. They have purple-lish eyes so they maybe tied to the void.

    I think they made the right decision with the current ending. It's a shame that what happens is in log form rather than cutscene, but I feel like it would be harder to convey without text. I guess they could have locked simulacrum to beating the voidling with that character, and then the cutscene could be flashes to different simulacrum moments, which would let players put 2 and 2 together themselves.
    idk. I like the delayed reaction of reading the log and realizing what you've done. It's "fun"

      I'm talking about the monster log, the description you get from killing voidling.
      Also it isn't really fair for voidling in terms of amount of content for a final boss, mithrix gets to have both a cutscene and a monster log, including an ending sequence (the timer thing) AND the ending texts for each survivor.
      Voidling only gets to have a monster log despite being treated as a "final boss"

    This is actually incredible as it would explain why the void reaver corpses inside of the void fields and near the portal to the void fields in the bazaar between time are there. They weren't killed, just out of range of the voidling.

      No. The void life forms that escape through the bazaar are dealt with by the newt. This is made clear how they have been stabbed many times with those large crystals of the same material as the bands of the newt. When the voidling dies you can see the void creatures simply sput and die. There is no dramatic death where they explode or any indication that they die like at the bazaar. Just a power off.

    Don’t know why people are so disappointed. Not having this cutscene sets up more content to be explored other than making the void be done with. Sure, they could of added a cutscene, but the fate unknown endings literally scream in your face “related content coming”. Personally, I would of been disappointed if killing something in which it’s namesake suggested is a lesser being of the void stoped the void.

      People paid for the dlc and are not satisfied with the amount of content it provided, imo its pretty reasonable from that point of view.
      The quality of the content on the other hand is entirely subjective, yea i agree this ending would be underwhelming but there is plenty of people who think otherwise.

    According to the lore, what happens when a survivor goes through the portal after defeating Voidling? Does he enter an eternal loop in The Planetarium in order to defeat Voidling again? If he is in a loop with Voidling, why void creatures died in this ending cutscene? This DLC is so confusing.

      Problem with planetarium log is that you can actually understand it as killing voidling but also as killing mithrix

    It makes it feel that the voidling is the ''Boss'' of the void, but it contradicts the lore saying that the void is a thing in itself, AND, it's a voidLING, considering is on the second layer, this is one of the weakest things on the void

    It would be way cooler that if we killed the voidling, then killed mithrix, the purple effect that shoes after you kill mithrix and the moon is (supposedly?) taken by reavers, the moon just exploded and killed the planet as mithrix intended to do ( i think)

    actually got this cutscene once while playing modded with a friend of mine, no clue how to guarantee getting the cutscene but we killed VoidLing after beating Mithrix in the same run-
    sadly there was nothing after the cutscene, screen went black forever so we had to quit the run and it ended up as a incomplete run
