Leftfield es un proyecto británico formado por dos amigos, Paul Daley y Neil Barnes, con enormes inquietudes musicales y un pasado punk, que les ayudó a conocer, comprender y amar la música electrónica y la cultura club y rave.
Este amor les llevo a lanzarse a la producción, y tras el éxito, en 1993, de su primer tema, esa maravilla llamada Open Up, de la que hablaré más adelante ya que se merece un comentario aparte, se decidieron por la publicación, en 1995, de un LP, que produjeron en su sello Hard Hands, aunque fue distribuido por la multinacional Sony, y que decidieron titular Leftism, y que les elevo al pódium de las bandas mas influeyentes de la música electrónica, bandas como Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Orbital o Underworld, elite, a la que, aún hoy, tras su desaparición siguen perteneciendo por derecho propio.
La verdad es que nos encontramos ante un disco perfecto, es más, en mi humilde opinión, puede que nos encontremos ante el disco más perfecto grabado nunca, un trabajo lleno de matices, tocando todos los estilos, yendo de la pista de baile a la introspección más absoluta, adelantándose a su tiempo y convirtiéndose en una piedra angular de la música electrónica.
Open Up :
Se trata de un tema de techno oscuro que se mueve entre el sonido industrial de gente como Cabaret Voltaire o D.A.F., e incluso se puede encontrar algo del synth pop de Depeche Mode o New Order, pero no se le puede negar las claras referencias al punk del que vienen estos artistas, no en vano, en este tema cuentan con la ilustre colaboración de John Lydon, batería de los Sex Pistols, que pone sus vocales al máximo rendimiento para regalarnos una joya de la música electrónica que cambió la forma de concebirla como hasta entonces se conocía, dándole paso para convertirla en música que se podía apreciar en vivo, otorgándole un puesto privilegiado en los festivales mas rockeros. Por supuesto, no pueden faltar, en este tema, los consabidos toques étnicos y el dub que tanto caracteriza la obra de este proyecto inglés, especialmente en la segunda parte del track, que supone un descanso después de los bestiales primeros minutos.
