I came across your channel earlier this year. And, honestly, your lists and in depth overview of each novel has been incredibly helpful to me. Thank you so much. Hope you have a great 2023!
My girlfriend made me a big Christmas ornament full of mini foam collected editions that I read through the year. They had the covers as little stickers on the foam squares. It was my favorite present by far!
The Last Ronin hardcover is THE BEST way to read it!! When I got this book I literally could not put it down. Cant wait to check out Winds OF Numa Sera, Mazebook, Murder Falcon and the Many Deaths Of Laila Starr. I recommend you check out the recent Death Dealer Volume 1 I picked it up the other day and it is GREAT. AMAZING video as always Omar
I think if you want to mention those we lost this year I feel that's really appropriate. All those people you mentioned deserve to be remembered. They all touched our lives in ways we can't even fully understand right now. My only hope is that their stories of heroism and optimism will inspire the future generations that follow.
Really kind of you to do the In Memorium, Omar. So many amazing creators gone this year. Last Ronin felt like a wonderful gift, think I was grinning from ear to ear the entire time I was reading it.
I've become a huge fan of your channel over the last 2 years. You have turned me on to a lot of comics I would have never heard of on my own. This video alone put a few books on my buy list. PTSD is my favorite book I've learned of through your channel. Keep up the great work!
I’ve been looking forward to this video! Am going to have to add Mazebook and Amazing Fantasy to my list. The only book I’ve read on here was The Last Ronin (which I agree was excellent). My Top 5 this year includes mostly books published prior to 2022: Moon Knight by Jeff Lemire, Wytches by Scott Snyder, TMNT by IDW Vol 1, Spider-Man by JMS Vol 1, and Nice House on the Lake.
Quite a few good one this year :) Some old, some new, all awesome! (in no particular order) 1. Hillbilly by Eric Powell - epic story set in Appalachian Mountains. Some good humour (not as crazy as in Goon), great writing and very cool main protagonist 2. Carbone & Silicium by Mathieu Bablet - one of the best books I've red in a while. A beautiful story about love (both parental and romantic), hard choices and human condition. It also tackles the issue of what's important in life and how it might be different for each of us. A stunning book! 3. Batman Dark Victory by Tim Sale and Jeph Loeb - one of the best crime-noir stories ever :) 4. Lobster Johnson Omnibus v1 by Mike Mignola john Arcudi, Sebastián Fiumar and more. A great pulp story, classic yet captivating. Awesome read! 5. Dungeon series (v 3 & 4) by by Joann Sfar and Lewis Trondheim - best European fantasy / pastiche of some well known fantasy tropes. A must read for all nerds :) 6. In the mountains of madness - a Lovecraft story adapted by the great manga artist Tanabe Gou. It's beautiful, it's scary, it's a great adaptation! 7. Gideon Falls Omnibus by Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino. Very good horror story, creepy and and crazy. Very well written with great art to support the story. Basically Twin Peaks but more gruesome. 8. Head Lopper series by Andrew MacLean and Mike Spicer - fantasy pulp with great action and surprisingly deep, emotional moments. Bloody and awesome! 9. Slaughterhouse-five by Albert Monteys, Ryan North. It's Kurt Vonnegut in a form of graphic novel. One of the greatest book ever written meets a new medium. And it works like a charm! What a great read! 10. Baltimore omnibus 1&2 - by Mike Mignola & Christopher Golden (Authors) and Ben Stenbeck, Dave Stewart, Clem Robins (Illustrators) - a dark, gritty, bloody, grim vampire-hunting story.
Thanks for this and all the vids this year Omar. Have been sick for some while and 2022 hit me extra hard with longcovid. But that also got me more and deeper into comics then ever before. I'm glad your doing this, looking forward to all the vids you'll make next year. Something to look forward too. And for sure am going to check some of these you mentioned here in this vid, I only have Flintstones I bought after your review and damn what a amazing book that was! One of the books I really didn't want to end!
Perfect Homage and send off to all of those legends that made our poverty and abuse filled child hoods more tolerable with an escape valve. Neal Adams? He IS the Frank Miller of the 1970s and is to Batman what Miller is to Daredevil during his first Marvel run with issue # 168 arguably as influential if not more so than Dark Knight 1886 run . 👑👑👑
best collected editions to read. Saga, The Nice House on the Lake, Something is Killing the Children, Dark Knights of Steel, The Department of Truth, Monkey Meat, Hellions, Murder Falcon, Moon Knight, Daredevil.
Oh man! Thanks for bringing Mazebook to our attention! I don't know why but I'm very attracted to stories about parents losing their children! It's odd because I lost a child. You would think I wouldn't want to read about the subject but it's actually therapeutic. If you can recommend anything else like that please let me know!
Fantastic video. So glad to see Laila Starr on here, what a beautiful, phenomenal book. I got Mazebook and Murder Falcon for Christmas, so I'm very excited to read those, heard endlessly incredible things about them. I'll have to check out everything else you mention when I get a chance. Happy New Year to you and all the family!
My list would definitely include "The many Deaths...", "Mazebook", and "keeping Two" . I'm really interested in ordering Murder Falcon. Love books that seem silly but have hidden depths.
The Last Ronin had no right being as good as it was. I was blown away by how cleanly the narrative flows and the stunning choice of colours in a gritty backdrop. Easily top 5 this year for me.
Happy holidays and happy new year to you, Melanie and to your kids. Been supporting your channel for a few years now. Especially when COVID hit the world, your channel kept me company for many hours on end. Well wishes and looking forward to 2023!
I sing the praise of “Barbaric” ALL THE TIME!!! It’s a book I accidentally fell into (I like Conan and Wolverine and I looked at the cover and said ‘oh so they made LO-NAN huh?😂😂😂😂) and once I did I was hooked. Barbaric when I first started with it, I felt like this guy did with murder falcon (what’s this stupid shit? This is crazy. Really, a talking blood drinking axe is the best thing they could come up with?!) and I just kept with it. Once I was six pages in I was laughing and slightly amused. This reminded me of dark horse’s mask, Conan and Wolverine (ironically), deadpool and Howard the duck (that damn axe, boy!! He’s funnier than deadpool by himself!) and oddly enough bram stokers Dracula (however not for the blood drinking thing but the tragic curse and consequences aspect. You’re going to have to read it to understand what I mean.). By the time I got through the first issue I was like “I need EVERYTHING barbaric!”. I bought two first print issue ones, the hardcover, all the second series that just released this fall (the final issue of the second arc hit in October or early November I believe), both one shots that released and am waiting for the second arc hardcover to come out in February I think. This is a DAMN AMAZING series that on paper, reading a synopsis, is no way you could believe it would work. It sounds too crazy and it’s elements that don’t seem to be plausible UNLESS YOU ACTUALLY READ IT because you just can’t conceptualize the functioning of them (for example the curse that surrounds the main character and that axe. It’s unexplainable to actually conceptually grasp without being in the setting and context of the story). Regardless, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!! It is a contender for best of 2022 and if it’s not nominated for that then definitely best new series for 2022 because it is totally underrated and equally as amazing at the same time. Pick it up!!!!
Interesting , for me Lemires artwork bespeaks the trauma of the human experience that we all share as being him from birth to life to sickness to old age then death as per the Buddha in 2600BC.
This is an incredibly hard list to make as I've read some truly phenomenal books this year. I don't think I could rank them as I could interchange their position all day without a perfect list. So here's my top reads of 2022 Gotham Central Omnibus Monster by Barry Windsor-Smith Captain America by Ed Brubaker Omnibus Fantastic Four By Jonathan Hickman Omnibus Vol. 1 The Flash By Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol. 3 Deadly Class Book 2 The Question By Dennis O'Neill Spider-Man By Roger Stern Omnibus Catwoman of East End Omnibus Locke & Key Compendium The Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus Vol. 3 The Death & Return Of Superman Omnibus The Amazing Spider-Man By David Michelinie & Todd McFarlane
I’m interested in reading The Last Ronin but I’ve only ever read the TMNT comics from free comic book day. I know the very basics of the turtles. Would you still recommend it for me?
Great video! I've added some of these to my wishlist, so thank you! Winds of Numa Sera could be classified as epic fantasy; especially, if you're categorizing it under Game of Thrones.
Great top 10 👍. I'm wating for the deluxe edition of Laila starr as it's set in my city and i want the best version of it. My favourite reads of the year are Ayako, Claymore, League of extraordinary gentlemen (only vol 1), dragon ball z, Sazan & comet girl, Batman curse of the white knight and Maus.
Isn’t that a great book?! I love Love LOVE Barbaric! I was following die and left off on the 2nd or 3rd trade however I didn’t keep up with it. Is it fully completed yet or is it still going?
I've seen a lot of best of 2022 lists by now, but I'm absolutely baffled that not one of them mentioned Jordi Lafebre's absolutely stunning graphic novel 'Always Never'...
@@NearMintCondition You really should put it on the top of your list. It's a lovestory told backwards. The book starts with chapter 20 and works its way back to the moment the couple initially met. It's a welcome change from the usual stuff with stunning artwork from Lafrebre.

Still doesn’t feel real that we lost so many talented people in the comic community
Totally. So many lost, but not forgotten in 2022. Let's hope 2023 is kinder to us all.
I know, I can't believe it.
Thank you for spotlighting those we lost. This was a rough year. So many True legends that have cemented their place in comic history ❤️

Damn it, Omar does it again. Three new books ordered.
I started Berserk this year and holy shit that book changed everything for me. It's definitely my favorite book of all time!
Same for me when I read it 2 years ago thanks to Omar. Nothing can top it for me
