Re: 3rd Gen iPod.. That "port" was part of the earphones that came with the iPod. The earphones had the play/pause controls.
Still got my Apple Shuffle 3rd gen. limited edition "Stainless Steel" for $99. I believe its worth quite a bit now on eBay.

The Zune HD was pretty ballin at the time.
I remember my dad getting one of the third generation iPods! I remember being very fascinated, and I've loved technology and gadgets since. Which says it all!
My favorite was The iPod nano 4th generation. I had one in red and it was sweet!
I was in love with the Apple iPod 3rd generation I got for a birthday gift awhile ago! I remember the good old days with that thing.
Those old iPods were basically just hard drives with a display, meaning they could take damage from being connected and disconnected wrongly. Crazy to think about.

iPod touch 1st gen was my first iPod. Loved it. I was the only kid in 6th grade with one, and it opened up a whole new world as far as softmodding devices and such. I miss 1st Gen jailbreaking days
I got my first iPod in 2006 on my 16th birthday, it was the 2 GB iPod Nano 1st gen. I loved that thing and then a couple years later i upgraded to a iPod Touch 2nd gen in the 8 GB capacity. I can't believe how much storage on phones that we have now in only 10 years of the iPhone coming out. I still have my iPod nano first gen but my second gen is long gone it got stolen a couple years after I got it. O and I had a 16 GB 5th gen iPod touch witch i sold 4 years ago.
The iPods I owned in my life were the Shuffle, 2nd generation, I had a 5th generation iPod Nano, and then I got an iPod Touch 4th Generation. Don't know whatever happened to that 2nd generation, nor my 5th gen nano, but I still have my 4th gen touch. :D

Awesome collection and video, David! For me that super nice sleek 5th gen iPod was my Apple gateway drug, lol. After that I switched from a Sony VAIO PC to an iBook. And since then I've had too many iPods to count, all the iPhones over the years, a few iPads, a MacBook Pro, and two iMacs. Boy how time flies, lol.
I've only had 2 iPods, but both were used to their full potential -

My favorite iPod memories involve playing the included games on the bus to school, specifically the song trivia.
My first ipod was the original iPod nano, then I got the ipod video. A few years later I bought the 4th generation ipod touch. Now I have the ipod touch 5th generation and the iPhone 6plus!
Awesome and informative video David! I, myself, have an Apple I-pod, the U-2 version - with their signatures on the back. It is a collectors item. I also got as a gift, an iPod shuffel, and also the iPod Nano 7. Haven't used them for a while, but after watching this video, you have reminded me to bring it back out. Thanks :)
I had the Shuffle 2nd gen, Nano 3rd and 4th, then the ipod touch 3rd and 4th. I still use my iPod touch 4th daily haha.
the only ipod I ever owned was the iPod Nano 7th generation. I absolutely loved it.
I have an iPod touch second and forth gen and I just ordered an iPod 5th gen off of ebay. I used to have an iPod shuffle but I've lost it over the years.
My only iPod is Nano 4th generation in blue..got Christmas 2007 , still have but haven't used much past few years...it was my first apple product and I was hooked !!!!

1:48 that is a remote control receiver for the apple ipod headphones, because you cant send volume up or down data through the headphone jack.
the apple ipod headphones have this really big clunky annoying box that controls sound.

There used to be an inline remote for the headphones. I think it plugged into both of the top ports.
You know what? I think I have that remote... It's an accessory that I never found myself using, so I forgot about it over time.
I got the pink iPod nano for Christmas (Not the fatty) then I have the iPod 4th and 5th gen, I still use my iPod everyday!
