Airfix and hornby tender drives can be made to run beautifully with a little tlc. On my small channel I have and airfix royal scot like this pulling over 50 wagons. The tenders are 6 wheel drive all with tyres.
Nice work - buying incomplete sets is a great way to expand your fleet - you can even sell the empty box off if you wish and it’s not too worn along with the controller and other bits you don’t want in order to recoup part of the purchase price. I would give both locos a precautionary strip and sparing lubrication of the motor & axle bearings along with the crank pins on the wheels, plus a dab of ptfe synthetic grease in the worm drive. That squeal from the Scot made me wince! Glad it subsided as the old lubricant on the motor armature warmed up but it definitely would benefit from this.
You couple of great bargains. It shows bargains are out there making this hobby affordable. I enjoy running my tender driven as much as the more modern stuff. Thanks for showing. Regards Paul.
Nice finds, This hobby can be a bit like fishing a little time and patience to get the bargains, I got some good ones at the shop in lynn last week, you missed the lynn model exhibition at gaywood.
The Mallard set for a mere £60. What a bargain!. I've never seen coaches alone going for less than a tenner each, even second hand at car boots and the like. Lucky beggar!!
Before running, you should have checked the lubrication and that the wheels were clean on all the rolling stock. Running until the squeal vanishes, is never a good thing. Nice find though.👌👍
