    Ektachrome certainly feels precious when it's so expensive but I feel it's worth it for the memories. I wish there was more colour reversal out there!

    • @taccomaker
      @taccomaker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I would be so glad, if Kodak brought out more colour reversal film stocks with different isos. One for artificial light would be great for example. I only shoot on Ektachrome, as I am not into transferring Super 8 footage into digital. I prefer watching it straight on a projector. As I don‘t shoot that much, I don‘t have to worry about the price too much, so Ektachrome suits best for me.

    I discovered your channel the same day we found my grandparents old yashica 60e and the more I watch the more inspired I am to shoot something in super 8! Keep up the good work!

    With the right level of lighting it does look rather good. Quite different from a video portrayal. It's expensive, yes, but a unique look.

    The price is high for the film and is likely to get higher. However, understand that if you store it well, you'll have these reels 40, 50, or more years from now. My father has super 8 film of Mount Mitchell, NC from 1966, before the hemlocks started dying out. It's astounding to compare that footage to what you see there today. That's just an example of how long film can last.

    • @taccomaker
      @taccomaker 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It definitely lasts long. I still have a lot of Super 8 footage, negatives and slides from the 60s until 80s. Most of it looks like it was shot and brought to the lab yesterday when it comes to quality. For long-term archival it‘s definitely better than digital, with its constantly changing software and hardware formats. I believe there are high quality hard drives out there that can last several decades. But even those can become obsolete if there is no software anymore that can handle those files properly in the future.

      That is super cool. It would be so interesting to see Mount Mitchell like that. I'm only 22 so the only times that I have been to Mount Mitchell have been fairly recent.

    When I used an 8mm (Also known as Double 8) movie camera, Kodachrome II was my choice. Now that "they took my Kodachrome away," Ektachrome will have to do. Quite a jump from ASA 25 Kodachrome to ISO 100 Ektachrome.;)

    Personally i prefer the look of the Vision3 colour negative stock. However the Ektachrome 100D really has such a nice look (especially with the fuzzy warm lights) that really looks like a dream. So for that kind of effect it would be my material of choice. Only for selected scenes. This is something that Film just always does sooo much better than digital image sensors. The whole smooth and warm transition and glow of light.

    So far I've only shot two rolls of the new E100D, but I have to say that for the most part I like it. It's not as saturated as the original '85, but sometimes the saturation seemed to overwhelm the sharpness and detail, especially with the reds.

    At this moment this film cost literally 1/4 of my monthly salary, way over priced. At this moment, in Poland at least, it costs almost the same as 120m of vision3 in 35mm, something went wrong

    Hi. I’ve been a fan of your channel for a while now. Just a question about Super 8 cameras and built-in light meters. I just got my hands on a Sankyo EM-40XL and I believe the meter is set up for either 40 ASA or 160 ASA. I have 3 rolls of Vision 3 500t. Do I need to externally meter or compensate for this stock, or can I trust the internal meter to correctly meter 500 ASA film?

    It's cheaper than negative if you don't do the scanning and go for projecting. It's even better you can get your reversal stock scanned everywhere and cheaper than negative stock. I've been shooting on Ektachrome in Double8, Ds8 and super8 for the past 13 years, always been my goto stock. I miss the price of the old Ektachrome 7285 it went for as low as 12 euro's upto 15 euro when it was discontinued. Back then most people shot on reversal film and it was way cheaper than the expensive negative stocks in film price and processing.

    I have a Sankyo XM XL camera with a bad viewfinder, but everything else is near brand new. Therefore, I must shoot it while manually focus. I would like to know if the distances indicated on the focus ring is the where the zone of focus is, or is everything within that distance is in focus?

    Beautifull filmstock, Ektachrome. Have you tried KAHL UT 18? Made in Germany since the early 2000s, it is to my knowlege the only color reversal Super 8 film currently being made, other than Ektachrome. Would love a review on it if you get the chance. 😉

    A question for anyone, regarding any Super 8 stock, really: Just getting back into Super 8 (after an absence of decades) and tested a couple of stocks (developed and scanned at Pro8mm). The 50D was pretty good. The VISION3 200T was usually too noisy for use, really. But in desperation, on the 200T I tried noise reduction (using the Neat plug-in in Premiere). The results seem awesome - unless I am not noticing something. It had not occurred to me that this would work, as I have it drilled into my modest brain that film grain and digital noise are rather different phenomena (as to both cause and effect). I don't want to overdo this to the point of losing the organic quality of the footage, but I am wondering if (1) I am not noticing something bad in my results, or, (2) on the other hand, is applying a little noise reduction just business as usual in post production for Super 8? Thanks for any experiences or ideas. - Dave

    Just dusted off the Super 8 camera I have had for forty years, and even though I had seen a couple of your helpful videos talking about Super 8, I only found out this morning that you shot Right Back and Left Behind for the delightful band Favours up there. It made me buy their music on iTunes so I can have it in my playlist while I'm driving. I got some good results (outdoor shots) on 50D for a documentary, but want to test the handful of other stocks available, including Ektachrome. Can I trouble you to share which stock (or stocks) you used for Right Back and Left Behind? - Dave

    Any chance you could do a video on syncing sound?

    • @bobuk5722
      @bobuk5722 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Simone. Synching sound is sadly not possible with most amateur silent cine cameras, they do not run the film through at a sufficiently constant rate to make this possible. Sound striped film worked of course but that is now not on sale. Adding a sound stripe after filming is possible, if expensive, but the synchronisation problem remains. Some 16 mm cameras can apparently be upgraded with constant speed drives - this channel has covered that in some of the earlier videos.

    • @areallyrealisticguyd4333
      @areallyrealisticguyd4333 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He has a video up attempting to sync sound on super 8. It's a pretty tedious process since most super 8 cameras aren't capable of this.

    So, do you think the Super 8 Ektachrome is better ( truer colors, not washed out bluey cast ) than Ektachrome 100 still film? I have been generally disappointed in the new Ektachrome….. but I was spoiled by the old Ektachrome that I used extensively for architecture and interiors…..

      I was kinda let down by the new E100D as well, but I expected it would have a different look. The one thing I miss is the almost wet-paint intensity the '85's color had. AFAIC, '85 was the true replacement for K40, not E64T.

  • @MORCOPOLO0817
    @MORCOPOLO0817 ปีที่แล้ว

    I believe that it is beautiful projected but like Kodachrome it does not transfer well due to the contrast issues with reversal film.

  • @nicholassheffo5723
    @nicholassheffo5723 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Your 64T results are still good, if with minor issues. maybe it owed have looked better without the filter? That;'s counterintuitive, of course, but Kubrick never sued filters. Here are two clips of 64T, starting with the stock in action when it was still in production and only in 720p that you likely have already seen...
    th-cam.com/video/Wy5IQSfmjCA/w-d-xo.html
    And though the transfer is not perfect, here is a 64T Super 8 shot only five months ago from a cartridge that was apparently kept in pretty good shape...
    th-cam.com/video/MadIHLjg9D4/w-d-xo.html
    That's impressive and the flaws you encountered are not necessarily there. Maybe the batch your cartridge came from had some odd issue people have not heard about? I have some I will shoot eventually and would happily get more, though prices are always high on these later Ektachromes because they are so good.
    Thanks for another excellent video!

    Based on my experience with Ektachrome, these new shots won't hold their colors long. ALL the Ektachrome films I know shot in the 70's are washed out and generlaly having a bluish cast. WAY worse than the super-stable Kodachrome.

    • @cubdukat
      @cubdukat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, there's also a big difference between the Ektachrome of the 70's and the E-6 Ektachromes of today. Stability is one of the best things about E-6. Having shot a lot of the old Ektachrome, I was not impressed, especially E160G. It was an interesting idea, but a horrible film. It never looked good in any kind of light.

    • @shaneteacman

      Ektachrome today is nothing like the stuff from the 70's. Modern Super 8 (7294) and even the Ektachrome discontinued in 2012 are very stable. All my Ektachrome Super 8 footage from 17 years ago still looks brand new projected.
