There's this video from a guy formerly called "ShayMay", now called "shoogles", that extensively goes over Pokemon Omega Ruby, including how it compares to the original game and his thoughts on the Pokemon series as a whole. Even though it's 7 hours and 15 minutes long, it's well with your time (even though I don't recommend watching it all in one sitting). He makes some interesting observations about both Omega Ruby and Ruby's design that I honestly didn't recognize and appreciate now in retrospect.
As for me and my experience with Pokemon's third generation, I remember having my mind blown when Ruby and Sapphire were originally announced and I saw the first few screenshots of those games, though after playing them I recall being somewhat lukewarm about them. That didn't stop me from getting Emerald and the Pokemon Red/Green remakes, FireRed and LeafGreen, though. PokeMania was kind of dying down overall, and while I never "grew out" of Pokemon the way some people apparently did, you can definitely tell that the hype wasn't completely there anymore. Still, this game came with some nice new additions, like Pokemon having passive abilities, and it had some neat new Pokemon (my personal favorite is Slaking). I'm not AS nostalgic for this generation as I am for Gen 1 or Gen 2, but it's not without its charm.

Good video, I always enjoy listening to your comments on some of my favorite games. Hearing the music from the third generation is very nostalgic.

Thank you! One of my favorite parts of making Pokemon videos has to be listening to the soundtracks as I choose background music, ha ha. This one was especially memorable.

Gen 3, 4, n 5 represent PEAK pokemon in terms of in-game. Gen 5, 6, & 7 was my favorite for competitive pokemon tho

1 & 2 were peak aside from competitive play. Gen 4 was best competitively imo.

I may be partial because Ruby was one of the first games I ever played and I have 500+ hours in it, but I think gen 3 did so many things right. I especially loved the secret bases, because it meant that you'd be able to enjoy some parts of the multiplayer aspect even if you rarely had the opportunity to link up with other players. Even if you had only connected to one other player once, their base would remain in your game allowing you to battle them and read their custom greeting. If I booted up my game today I'd still be able to battle my friends from 20 years ago with their level 100 Rayquazas and Blazikens.

I'm kinda surprised you didn't mention Colosseum or XD: Gale of Darkness, which were very important aspects to the 3rd generation despite being "spinoffs."

God I love base building, it was one of the mechanics in Ruby that I loved dearly and I'm glad they brought it back in ORAS. apparently it was in Gen 4 but then the remakes mucked it up
also that music be very nice
AND contests were much more interactive then they are in Gen 4

At the time I liked gen 3 a lot, especially gen 1's remakes, but retroactively I see gen 3 as where the cracks started showing. It's still good, but a more critical eye shows why Pokemon ended up so poor over time (and a complete woke joke at this point, which I didn't see coming).
