Wonderful - I love this sensitive, empathetic, very emotional interpretation! Some may find this too romantic, or not baroque enough, but I don't think Bach has to be played like a mechanical clock work all the time. The playing reminds me of Bach's vocal work, which has a very deep, human touch too me.
Beautiful slow pacing means every note is felt deeply. The chromaticism sounds like the legendary chromaticism -- oranges, yellows and reds -- of the setting sun. The fact that the prelude is so easy to play make it an invention of sublime lyricism. Barenboin makes the melody sings and the harmony move so deftly - the notes held just long enough to make an indelible impression. Some theories hold that this work was written after some tragedy - possibly the death of Bach's first wife - but this interpretation seems less sad than the ultimate triumph over sadness. The fugue is the pure bouncing delight of a puppy chasing after a ball. Tragedy dispelled -- pure laughter ensues!!!
Although I prefer historically informed performance styles of Bach's music, Barenboim's romantic interpretation is outstanding, expressive and beautiful.
Negative comments are never good. A different, but beautiful performance, by might I add, one of the most celebrated pianists of our time. Thank you Mr B and Mr B 😁
This is head and shoulders above every other performance I have heard in terms of shaping of phrases, contrast, variety, and every present musical meaning.
You are absolutely right. I have been waiting all my life for a good interpretation of the 48 and Barenboim's is the first one that satisfies me completely from beginning to end.
What would be the level or volume of interpretation on Bach's music? I want to be emotional and play like a kind of romantic era piece. Will it effect my audition bad or good?
Don't use pedal too much, if at all. Preferably not at all. Don't take a ton of time. Almost no rubato. But take time at ends of phrases. I may be too late, but hope your auditions went well!
Dear ImpromptuOp142 I feel your enthusiastic investment through your videos. To spread them to more viewers, I would love to repost your whole channel, without changing anything, on the nice platform called Ganjing World. If you agree with that, please let me know. "
@@blindinglight7839 and Robby - there is nothing more destructive of Bach than the "True Baroque style." IIt seems to me that Barenboim has read Adorno's essay, "Bach defended against his Admirers" in which he writes that Bach has more in common with Chopin and Schumann than with the perpetrators of authenticism which means absolute falsification. Bach was one of the most deeply expressive of all composers. The Romantics revived and championed him because they found themsleves in him
This is far too indulgent for me. A little flexibility is of course desirable; it should not sound metronomic, but in this performance Barenboim takes far too many liberties, dawdling far too much for my taste. That distension I just heard at 3:24 is far too much for taste, and probably the same on the repetition when eventually get there, at this rate of tempo, thoroughly too bizarre for my ears. In my humble opinion - others may not agree - he has no business playing this repertoire. The fugue sounds just as affected to me as the prelude.
***** I did say "in my opinion," which in case you have forgotten, I am fully and completely entitled to. I'm deeply sorry for you that you have such difficulty in accepting opinions different from your own, and by the way, I have no interest in getting into a verbal sparring match with you because of this difficulty of yours. On the other hand, if you want to discuss this in a completely civil and courteous manner, that will be an entirely different manner. The choice is up to you.
It's still an opinion, that you cannot accept, and I frankly don't care anymore whether you can or not, as long as you are determined to be abusive and insulting.
Alger, I agree. Around 3:24 the music is almost coming to a stand-still. After 5:00 a similar story, his rubato is over the top. I prefer Richter, or the little gem of JeongYun Yang, available here on TH-cam.
Too slow!! I dunno why the hell most of interpreters play Bach's works so slowly.. Gould was too fast most of the time but this is the opposite extreme!

shut up neek
This just proves that Bach is ahead of his time

one of Bach's jems
My favourite version played by one of my favourite musicians.
Same here! Barenboim plays it so delicately. I love it!
Душевно и тонко исполено.
Спасибо за трансляцию.
jem brought me here, and low and behold I'm still listening to this music in whatever year we're currently in.
2020
There's room in my world for a host of interpretations of this music. I love Richter's, Gould's, Schepkin's, Hewitt's, as well as this by Barenboim.
Negative comments are never good. A different, but beautiful performance, by might I add, one of the most celebrated pianists of our time. Thank you Mr B and Mr B 😁
I love that i can hear the sustain pedal in action...
It´s ok! Bach would have used it as well :-)
My favourite pianist, without a doubt.
Выдающееся исполнение! Bravissimo!

indeed
I totally disagree

I fall asleep during the Fuga! So slow, so romantic, so much pedal... I miss the dynmic vibe that this piece should radiate!
I think, this is my favourite, though I have enjoyed many.
Thank you so much for sharing. Wonderful!
I love the passion Alger. But I also love this interpretation. It satisfies my indulgence.
To each his own. But at least you're not abusive and insulting like that Firefly character on this post.
Да Вы - Сноб? )
I call this song
"Press F to pay respects"
I think you mean "f", not "F".
This is the first prelude I have heard that /ends/ in a minor key rather than in the major. Even the fugue ends in minor (on a neutral F though).
Oh, very nice! I love it!:)
I usally watch this when I practice This music:)
Genius x 2 👍
this morning, I played the prelude and fugue. the window cleaner (his name was not Kundara)knocked at the window pane, hey man, beautiful music!

Thanks for sharing this beauty. I’m in love with this piece 💕
I'm 11 and I'm playing this prelude and fugue for my competition.
Just wanted to wish you luck , until I realized you're already older than me

Может быть такая акустика зала или студии, но слишком много правой педали, нет чёткости.

Cool
Beautiful and emotional interpretation indeed ! But playing a A instead of Ab at bar 49 sounds surprising to my ears.
good
I'm 6 Years old and playing this in a concert

What do you mean? Are you talking about the F minor prelude from the Well-tempered Clavier book one or the fugue?

look at Czerney's edition of Beethoven's performances of the 48, no sense of 'period' whatsoever
Mathematics.
He is not playing true to the barouqe style, he's playing in a more romantic style.
Sounds a little Beethoven to me!?
