The best performance of this piece I have ever heard! Thank you very much! How anyone could put a dislike on this?!?!?! The legacy of Karl Richter is absolutely unique.
So true. Still, to be honest, there is an enormous quality difference between Toccata (which isn't very interesting) and Fugue (which is a masterpiece). Speaking of Fugue, I find it quite unique among Bach's works: here is Bach the free spirit with boundless inventiveness.
Lucian Popescu, I am sorry for my inadequate English. Quote:....."Toccata(which isn't very interesting)and fugue(which is a masterpiece)." Toccata? I believe that you mean the Preludium. To me it is opposit, the Preludium is a masterpiece and very interesting. The fugue have never impressed me at all. As a composition you can call the fugue a masterpiece, but as a fugue is not any masterpiece at all! Too many sections of the fugue has no connection to the theme, but sounds much more like fantasias. I am not convinced that the Fugue is composed by Bach. There are so many non-Bach elements in the Fugue. David Williams say that only the first 20 bars of the Fugue is from Bach's own hand. Then an another continue with a handwriting quite different from Bach's.
geir øyvind eskeland Who knows? It does sound unusual, but musically it keeps a very high standard. That alone convinces me it can only be Bach... That's why almost everyone accepts Bach's authorship for this piece whereas in the undeservedly famous Toccata and Fugue in D Minor authorship keeps on being questioned.
The unusual part at 7:53 and the way it concludes with the theme is marvelous. Listen at 10:01 to the end: in terms of music quality it goes only second to Passacaglia and Fugue. Had this music been composed by someone else, we would have had someone that was equal to Bach in the mastery of notes. So far, we know of no one before and after...

Tempi for prelude/fugue is great - really exciting. Don’t love the overly detached articulation at the first entrance of the fugue subject, but I think the piece truly comes alive at this speed - there’s a real sense of trajectory expressed through its energy.
Gérard Begni, I am sorry for my inadequate English. Karl Richter jump between manuals, we can't do that in compositions like this. It's impossible to start and finish a new phrase on the main key. So why did he change manuals? He was addicted to the romantic style and expression, he couldn't do any exceptions I guess.
Karl Richer has no romantic background, as far as I know. Jumping from a manual to another is not a matter of tonality, but of expression. ONe may look for expression without doing it in a romantic spirit, at least I think.
Gérard Begni, 2:17, 2:44, 2:55, 3:51 and 5:10 sounds bad because the main keys don't get any rest. On the other hand, listen to the Fantasia BWV 542.(listen also mean read the score) Here Bach composed a number of rests that make it possible to change manuals and the composition still sounds good. I used the word romantic because K. Richter in several of Bachs organ compositions start with piano and finish the pieces in a powerful forte. Furthermore, a lot of organ music from the romantic periode often prescribe changing of manuals.(and registrations)
Thank you, kostaliver, for sharing this wonderful performance and also the photos. Perfectempo! Wish the Hauptwerk mixture were in tune. Should have fixed it for this recording. Nice having the contrast and relief of other manuals. Fugue too fast. Richter accomplishes the "impossible trill" at 6:44, 11:30! Many don't try. Why no trill at 7:37, 12:22? They need to correct the unsteady wind in the Brustwerke. Tune the reeds! Wonderful, energetic performance!
This is very good performance. Sometimes the performers plays Bach too slow and it does not show the genie of Bach and clarity of his music. It sounds in that (slow) case as a lot of notes, passages and variations. The single element is too visible, the work becomes too granular. This performance, thanks to quick playing, gives us a general idea what Bach wanted to express and wrote. The majesty of Bach is visible par excellence. Bach must be played quite fast (not very fast, but quite or really fast) so we see his technik, his musical consideration etc.
The "wedge" title comes from the subject of the fugue - opening up from a smaller interval to a larger one Here's what it looks like: imgur.com/gf4imnq
This is what and how a fugue is and should be played, mad and vigorous, up and down the hall twisting the ears and minds of all who listens!!!
No one can ever say that fugue is a "dry" or "dusty" form after listening to this! An excellent no holds barred performance.
The fugue is probably the best version I've ever heard.
The best performance of this piece I have ever heard! Thank you very much! How anyone could put a dislike on this?!?!?! The legacy of Karl Richter is absolutely unique.
This is music in it's full essence. It is spiritual and art in a complete way like almost no one in these days can accomplish!

Please tell me where in the Fugue do you think ..."musically it keeps a very high standard."

Richter è sempre profondo. È un grande e sapiente maestro.
Richter number one. The best!

This composition drive me to an ambient so powerful and scary... There are a way lot of energy on this piece.... I can't stop of listening!!!
The fugue is scary and mind-blowing!!!
Wow...one of the sickest fugas ever...

The fugue of this work is overwhelming and perhaps some ''scary'' but logically in a good way!
At first i didn't get it , after a couple of replays i came to realise how miraculous it is
Luminous Karl ‘Richter’ Scales...
I definitely think this faster tempo makes the piece more connected and interesting.
"Very few can equal Richter, nobody can surpass him".
This is a grizzly bear! Loved it! Even a little faster in the close of the fugue!
This is probably one of the greatest, with that in B minor and in C major. The rendering of Richer seems me perfectly convincing.

Organists are very quick when they change manuals. They can take advantage of a rather long notes. You must look at them. It is astonishing.
I had played organ and piano for some 40 years but I have now severe osteoarthritis in the fingers so I was obliged to stop it.
The music of God
One of my favorite ... 💕💕👍

Perfectempo!

Wonderful, energetic performance!
So, so good!
Sublime of Bach devote Worship of Gott through his deeds and legacy in this dark world we live with our intuition, thoughts are mortal creations...
I don't know any other fugue, which has so much suspense.
"" supèrbe! ""
merci beaucoup.
Bach discovers acid during the fugue.
+Beryl Green actually there are many things which has been using in jazz harmony
Comic!
Fantastique déferlement de phrases musicales de génie,Bach nous transporte au-delà du vivant....
the Van Cliburn of the organ and probably good friends at the time too!
TH-camに上がってるBWV548の中で、多分これが一番上手い
Bach would have approved. How can you write God-like music like that and not get caught up in Divine ecstasy?
causabon99 quote: "Bach would have approved." Except for the changes of manuals. The score make it impossible to change manuals in BWV 548

clamanus very good described :)
You're wrong. Tempo is too fast.
+clamanus That is not always true.
+John27346 That's subjective
John27346, your comment is useless because you don't gives us any reason for your statement.
💘💘❤❤💕💕
Is this song a form of wedge?

the start sounds like the ugly jumble of keys that i hate from a lot of old pieces
Cope
manic
It's ok but there is much better Bach than this. Sorry . It dribbles on too much. It's in the programme on Tuesday at Selby Abbey 17th August.
What a travesty
