I recently replayed this on a whim. It's amazing how much better the gameplay is if you side with Yugi, but how vastly superior the story is when you side with Kaiba. It's no freaking contest, he treats you like a valuable member of his forces and handsomely rewards you for aiding him in his quest to rid the world of ultimate evil. You feel like a plot device when you're siding with Yugi while you feel like a comrade when you side with Kaiba.

It honestly feels like the Kaiba ending is legitimately the better ending. Kaiba realizes he was wrong and the White Roses likely end up becoming peaceful after. In the Yugi ending the White Roses would still be upset and likely start another war.

It's real sad how that Rush Duel game and Legacy of the Duelist aren't even in the same ballpark when compared to the average output of Konami's late 2000s / early 2010s Yugioh games. Then again, considering the state of Konami nowadays, can't say I'm surprised.
Also since you mentioned it, big shoutout to Misaki, especially since MangaKamen made a video ranting about female characters in Yugioh. Female introverts are rare and when they appear they tend to fill the "cute shrinking violet" role, so getting one that avoids this trap, is a prominent character in the plot AND undergoes a character arc in a series infamous to mistreating their female characters like Yugioh is worthy of praise.

There was lore integrating the hat guy with 5D's in Tag Force 4-6 to a certain extent. Moreso in the later games, there's a pretty consistent plot thread across a few stories like Pladico's and I think it's also brought up in Sherry's that establishes the player character is a robot from the future.
It is weird that the Tag Force originals haven't been brought back in newer games since they could be used for a ton of benefit in games and already had established personalities, and in later Tag Force games their designs and expressions even got differentiated to lean into their personalities more. They would do brilliantly in the current market.

Hi, so here's interesting thing about Seto's character on Duelist of the Roses (Thanks to the Fridge page of that game on TV Tropes).
Seto is based on Christian Rosenkreuz. The origins of the "real-life" Rosenkreuz are Shrouded in Myth (if he existed at all is debated), but the manifestos documenting his life put his date of birth in 1378, while the war of the Roses took place in the mid to late 1400s. Furthermore, Rosenkreuz had nothing to do with Richard III or the War of the Roses. So why is Seto cast as Rosenkreuz in the role of Richard III's enforcer?
Rosenkreuz founded a secret society called the Order of the Rose Cross, which studied ancient knowledge he purportedly learned on pilgrimages in the Middle East, and their sigil was a cross with a white rose in the middle. This symbolically connects Seto to the Yorkists via their own white rose sigil, and perfectly ties into Seto's goal to summon an ancient Card God from Egypt. Rosenkreuz was said to have lived to be 106, and since magic is well known to exist in the Yu-Gi-Oh! universe, it's totally plausible Rosenkreuz was able to retain his youth for his century-long life. Finally, Rosenkreuz's date of death is 1484, and the Battle of Bosworth field which is the climax of the game took place in 1485. Thus one only needs to fudge the dates just a little bit to make all this work, because after the battle with the Card God at Stonehenge, which happens very shortly after the Battle of Bosworth Field, Seto and the Rose Crusaders vanish from England and are never seen again.

The reason why the franchise never really had spinoffs or alt formats is just because of how halfhearted Konami was with making them. There are so many spinoff games from Yugioh's peak in popularity like DDM, Falsebound Kingdom, Capsule Monster Colosseum, Destiny Board Traveler, Wheelie Breakers and, yes, Duelists of the Roses but most of them were more or less shovelware which probably soured the experience for things that aren't card game simulators. Similar thing happened recently with Cross Duel. And a similar thing happens with alt formats like Pegasus Challenge or Boss Duel in that they appear for a little bit, usually only in OCG regions, then just kinda stop being run.
With the recent news of Konami's shareholders expressing concerns with the longevity of the IP, maybe they will be making something for people who like Yugioh for the aesthetics, characters, lore, and creative gameplay but don't like competitive.

Small a difference as it is, and as poor a substitute as it is for an actual differing plot, I do like that depending on who you side with, you either have a linear path or a more open ended approach in how you tackle things, especially considering your goals. Yorkists want you to beeline it to Yugi, and the Lancastrians want you to jjst get the rose cards

    • @derrickhaggard
      @derrickhaggard 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Also concerning the plot a lot people say Yugi was the villain simply because he doesn't give you credit for helping end the War of the Roses for the Lancastrian side and you don't know if you end up back home. Well here's the thing that ending is left up for interpretation. For example I have it interpretated to where the Rose Duelist asks Yugi to not be given credit and he should take all the credit in order to ensure the timeline isn't changed for possibly the worst aka history says Henry Tudor is the one credited with ending the War of Roses via his marriage to Richard's daughter, and being the one who sets up the defeat of Richard at Bosworth Field and so in order for the timeline to remain safe Yugi has to take all the credit, and this is the first time you as the Rose Duelist first use your powers of Space-Time Manipulation and open a portal back to your home time-period and you literally have no idea if the portal you opened actually sent you back to your home time period or you sent yourself to another time period

I honestly really dig what they did with Yugi and Seto in this game, going in this you would let your preconceptions from the anime guide you into thinking Setos the bad guy and yugi is the good guy where in reality its the other way around. Henry Tudor Yugi and the Lancasters were the ones who started the war of the roses in the game just so that he can put himself on the throne regardless of the bloodshed that would follow while Seto and the Yorkist are just trying to defend their homeland and fulfill Setos family dream of summoning the card guardian. Its a amazing subversion of expectations that Seto is who the Duelist of The Roses should alllied with because unlike Yugi his motives are pure, upfront and honorable with Seto being the one who keeps his promise sending the protagonist home and even giving him a memento that symbolizes his debt to the protagonist that his descendants would recognize.

I'll say this in Tea's defence: If she gets the ball rolling with her deck, she steamrolls you hard. One of the most terrifying cards in her deck is Ray & Temperature, a seemingly innocuous 1000/1000 card except the damn thing erases all stat buffs you give a monster when it battles it. And if it's been powered up by Winged Trumpeter and other support cards, that thing will steamroll new decks that don't have any counters for it yet. This is also true if she gets Hourglass of Courage and Gyakuteno Megami to trigger, as all her teeny monsters can become very, VERY powerful under the right circumstances. Especially if she starts making Mystical Elfs, which make LIGHT a powerhouse of a deck type considering you can run 3 and fuse at least 6 by having low attack Elf monsters fuse with a LIGHT monster.

If you listen to the music for each side the Yorkists battles (vs them) have an almost up beat heroic sound and the other song is kinda villainous and given in the context of the story you are supposed to do what Kaiba said kinda makes me wonder

The villanous songs is because you are fighting the good guys, so it's kind of your theme, not theirs. But I agree that the game sends mixed signals and plays with expectations on which path is the "righteous" one.

I feel like a tactical rpg based on the tcg/ocg card lore would be super interesting. Like, imagine a dogmatica game or a game based on duel terminal. You wouldn't need a model for every modern card because the majority of them wouldn't exist in that word.

This is a super nostalgic game for me. And an interesting one to look back on, since it was made before the Battle City rules were even introduced (it actually came out in Japan right around the time Ishizu gave Kaiba Obelisk and all that in the anime). So this was very much a fun little experiment on how to develop the original Duelist Kingdom/Forbidden Memories mechanics And honestly there is a lot of fun and charm looking back.
That said as you said not perfect. Along with the AI sometimes being quite dumb there are just... so many ways to snap this game and its theoretical challenge in two. No joke- I have multiple times been able to beat most every opponent using basically Mirror Force and Aqua Dragon. Only swapping stuff around against Bonez and Bakura respectively on the two routes, due to their deck costs being super low. And if like me you had the cheat code book (or nowadays can just look it up online) you can get those at the start of a playthrough

I played the heck out of this and Falsebound Kingdom. They were both unique and enjoyable enough. I beat DotR easily enough, but i couldn't figure out how to triple fusion, so no Gate Guardian. And i played with the basic Deck Master since every card I looked at didn't have a Deck Master effect. I didn't look at every monster, but i looked at enough of them. I couldn't figure out some traps that just sat on the field and didn't do anything despite saying otherwise. I like the jackpot end of duel system. I remember getting a candle card like 'Flame of the Candle' or 'Man of the Flame' or something. It's been like 15 years, cut me some slack. It's effect was it reduced opposing monster's atk by 100 each turn. Not super OP but i would stall out games for a long time and try to one-shot the opposing duelist with the Riryoku spell card mentioned in the video. I had a blast with it.

There was a lot more experimenting in the industry in general I think. Back before the days of microtransactions and en masse trend chasing (there were still shades of that though, like online RPGs but the trends didn't bloat the AAA scene nearly as much). Course some of it was mishandled, like with the Mega Man franchise where they were trying to do too many things at the same time, leading to franchise burnout, I guess Disney didn't hear about that considering how they handled the MCU.

11:58 This happens to be the way to get rare and powerful cards btw. So yeah, it can be kinda tough getting stuff like a Blue Eyes or the Dark Magician in this game. But you're generally better off building your deck around an element or theme like the deckmasters kinda suggest. Also, you're supposed to be able to unlock special abilities and stuff at higher ranks for your deckmaster, but I've never seen these ever because it is a CHORE to level up your deckmaster. The AI has it sometimes though.

The best way to level your commander doesn't even open up until post game when you can make your own versus map. I think one of the game's biggest weaknesses is that the Duel Master promotions should have been snappier/quicker, and there needed to be some nameless mooks under each general, so you can at least promote your first deck master more than once between both campaigns.

Pumpking and zombies are broken. If you wanted to breeze through the game, you could put in the name ACE, and get the Patrician of Darkness (I think?) Deck. Which is the zombie deck. You can create Pumpking by fusing a plant and zombie monster together, with the requirement that one of the monsters has 1000 base attack (not counting summoning terrain). Get 5 pumpkings, wait around 10 turns in face up defense position, and start plowing through every enemy in the game. Zombies are strong in 2 terrains, wasteland and Yami, and weak to mountain. Which makes them really strong and versatile. Get some cards like royal decree and life point restoration to fight against non battle effects, and the deck is nearly invincible.

I couldnt find any in-game guide on what monsters would fuse together and what couldnt. So my opponent would always fuse together something strong while i was stuck at stuff below 2000 ATK and no terrain advantage.

Joey Wheeler was my favourite from the original series. Everyone I knew was obsessed with Kaiba or Yugi. I liked Joey because he was the underdog and a great supportive character. He was someone who everyone looked down on, managed to surpass expectations, and was part of the reason Yugi managed to make it far. Sure he didn't win any tournaments but he still did well and surpassed most players. Everyone wants to admire or be the protagonist, but not everyone can fit that role. Not to mention they fail to realize that supporting characters are very important.

I would never side with Seto because if I am Isekaied, I DO NOT have any plans whatsoever of returning to this timeline of this world. EVER! Like I'm making a whole new damn life on that world unless it's somehow, someway, a place even I despise more than living on this world.
And that takes a lot for me to say or feel that way about. That said, I DO wish they did more with the story. Like everyone treats the Duelists as more valuable than an army of well trained knights thanks to their powers as Duelists, the monsters they can summon, using magic and trap cards that affects the world around them like Psychic Duelists do or the Ancient Egyptians summoning real monsters for some idea to compare.
Imagine if they honestly tried mixing dueling and some situations where you needed to use your cards to survive real encounters with soldiers, bandits, assassins, or go exploring different parts of the world as you move from one territory to the next looking for the Rose Cards. Learning the legend of the Rose Cards and their connection TO YOU, why only you can wield the true potential of the Rose Cards, how they have powers over time(RED) and space(WHITE), and actually bond with all the characters potentially. But have little routes opened if you bond with certain characters more than others!
I have no problem with the "lowkey dating sim" as you put it from Tag Force, I loved that mechanic and wished they used it a bit more honestly as I did enjoy bonding with my favorite Yu-Gi-Oh Ladies, I'll admit. Plus it would be great if we could also bond with our own Deck Master, our Duel Spirit who has a connection to our very soul unlike all the other cards in our deck.
There is a lot of potential here for unique bonding scenes, action or stealth based elements of using the right cards to deal with various situations, exploration and discovery of the world around you and your own legend that you are connected to this world about, and seeing how your actions CAN and WILL change things if you so desire! I'd love nothing more than to Remake this game with a bigger card pool and build up to expand the lore and world building of this game, as well as add unique scenes as you bond with certain characters which can lead to special favors granted to you as you play along as these characters want to look out for you and get to know you more. And really show WHY Duelists were considered the one man/woman armies of both sides of this war that is more valuable than an army of well trained knights!
If I was doing this, I'd probably restrict myself to the card pool of up to 5Ds on my first go personally, but XYZ has WAY too many decks that FTK or OTK, or go absolutely nuts with how fast they are. Don't EVEN get me started on Pendulum or Link...I feel 5Ds has a good card pool size without going too far in how many cards I need to make new effects for just to keep the game slow and strategic, with an element of luck.
I don't doubt I'd be changing A LOT of cards even with the 5Ds era restriction, but at least it's a limit that is still decently sized for many possible decks to work with and styles for everyone to give a try playing once done.

I played it all the time when i was a kid, and again recently, this tjme using my name and had absolute trash decks to pick from. Hey Manga, your video didn't mention if you discovered my favorite strategy. It involves creating a deck of light monsters and using the mystical elf and darkness descends cards. When flipped, the mystical elf powers up all your light monsters by 800. Darkness descends is a magic card that flips all face up cards face down. Add in a few cards like the magician of fate which brings back magic cards for an additional use... Let's just say I have gotten monster cards powered up to 9999/9999 if I dragged the duel out long enough. It was a total blast, especially when I played against my brother.

Wow, you have the same interest like me: tweaking bad yugioh cards. Do you have any way for us to talk about yugioh stuffs? Maybe discord or something?

29:41 For the Arc-V fans unfamiliar with this card, it's _normally_ Dark Rebllion XYZ Dragon's effect in spell form. For some reason this game changed your monster's ATK to your LP for the effect and instead of _one_ of his monsters it's _all_ of them.

Oh, it's because that how it worked in the anime/manga when it was used by the Paradox Brothers (then copied by Joey's copycat card).... a lot of cards here have effects that better reflect how they were done in Duelist Kingdom actually (like Swordstalker gaining strength from cards in the GY to Terrain bonus in general).

I just realized after 17 years that this game's story is basically a yugioh isekai plot. I loved the gameplay mechanics and felt it had a lot of depth. I also thought the difficulty of this game was more fair than Forbidden Memories, especially once you know how to properly farm for the cards you want. Funnily enough, using my middle name allowed me to always pick Fairy King Truesdale, which I did for one reason and one reason only; farming for those sweet Blue-Eyes White Dragons.

it is not isekai, its a retelling of british indigneous history with yugioh characters playing the historical figures. good grief

I think it was a missed opportunity to do a sequel dealing with the revolutionary war, or go all in on a Sengoku period type game like war of the roses.

Imagine a War of the Three Kingdoms version of this. Or better yet, a Trojan War one!

Regardless of how you feel about Rush Duels, there is no excuse for its entire TCG region exposure to be a single video game with no updates, and unofficial simulators like Duelingbook

Konami did recently try to experiment with Yu-Gi-Oh having other styles with Cross Duel, but unfortunately it had poor stability (crashing on official streams), it went really high on target specs for a mobile release do few could even try it, and a poor monetization model.
They did go pretty strong with 3d models for every card in that game (wasn't every card in the card pool but it was a decent number) and various animations, so time will tell if they toss them out entirely or use them in a new project beyond just mates for Master Duel.

they weren't even the same models as the ones in master duel
