Hey y'all, just wanna throw this here because a lot of people are getting the wrong idea with this one.
A lot of people are getting the impression that I didn't enjoy this game, and my writing with this video definitely could've been more clear, but that is absolutely not the case. If you stick through to my conclusion, I still really enjoyed the game. I just think that it has some problems that the MGS games before it didn't have, and I wanted to dig into those and get a discussion started on them. Like I said, I should've conveyed that more throughout the video so that people didn't get the wrong idea, but unfortunately I was only able to see the script from my own perspective, and didn't foresee that it would be perceived that way.
Regardless of whether you agree with my opinions or not, thank you for taking the time to watch my stuff! I love having the discussion, but let's make sure to keep it respectful so that everyone can feel welcome to participate 🙂

One thing you may have missed because a lot of the lore is hidden in random codec conversations: It is hinted heavily in the codec conversations with Eva that the child the Boss had with the Sorrow during WW2 and then taken away from her by the Philosophers is actually Ocelot himself. What's not really hinted at is whether the Boss was aware of this the whole time. Depending on what you believe, it does put an interesting light on the few interactions they had in the story. It also puts an interesting light on the relationship between Big Boss and Ocelot being the adopted and biological sons of The Boss.

    • @shuboy05
      @shuboy05 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

This is actually confirmed in the MGS4 Database. But Kojima leaves it ambiguous whether The Boss figured out Ocelot was her son or even if Ocelot knew. Furthermore the Database states that EVA was trained at a Charm School where The Boss was an instructor. Which clears up why EVA also seems close to The Boss.

So this game has a lot of its content in optional Codec calls. Instead of the death monologues, you get a lot of the information about the bosses through contact with Major Zero, Sigint, and so on. In fact, there are so many important details in these Codec calls, such as the game hinting at Ocelot being the son of The Boss and The Sorrow, which is why in MGS4 he looks a lot like The Sorrow. Other things like how Volgin and Raikov have a gay relationship, and some of the accolades of the Boss and the Cobra Unit during WWII.
As for the boss fights, the game seems to be a lot easier, as you said, and I think the "Hard" difficulty is supposed to be the "Normal" difficulty. The other fun thing about this game is that most of the bosses can be fought in CQC instead of with guns, and playing this game while using non-lethal for all the bosses makes the game so much more fun. The Volgin and Boss fights using only CQC makes the game, especially on "Extreme" into a tense, fun series of fights.
Anyways, the nice thing about the additional details in the Codec calls is that you can choose to take them in to get more information on the whole universe, but they're not required to understand the main storyline of the game. And I think this did a great job balancing the amount of cutscenes in the game versus gameplay, which some of the games in the series (get ready for 4) do a terrible job in doing.

Let's talk about dem bosses. First and foremost I'm not gonna say you fought them wrong. Whatever way nets you a victory is a right way. That being said, there is definitely a way the game wants you to fight these bosses, non-lethaly. Not only is the challenge for non-lethal takesdowns greater, to me at least, but going non-lethal also nets you special camos that all have bonuses tied to them.
Ocelot: defeating him non-lethally gets you the Animal camo which will cut down on your hand trembling if you have low stamina. For some extra fun, you can shoot off his hat, or the beehives above him for some free hits. Plus if you stand next to the cliff edge with a pistol drawn he'll challenge you to a quick draw duel.
The Pain: Beating him non-lethally gets you the Hornet Stripe camo which makes all bees, leeches, spider, and scorpions ignore you. Unfortunately I don't really have any fun tips or tricks for his boss fight but you seemed like you enjoyed that one anyhow.
The Fear: The name of the game is stamina, his will deplete constantly forcing him to hunt for food. You can sabotage this by throwing out rotten or poisonous food to force him to throw up, costing him more stamina. In addition taking a fake death pill will cause him to come check on you before he lowers his guard, giving you a free shot, or instant kill if you have a stun grenade and the AK. He drops the Spider camo when beaten non-lethally, giving you and automatic 80% camo index at the cost of high stamina drain.
The End: Uniquely you DON"T get his camo via non-lethal win, you do get his gun however. You have to hold him up to get him to drop the Moss camo, which is the only camo that can reach 100% camo and will recover health and stamina, health regen is slower, in sunlight, or torch light. For additional fun you can tranq his parrot and release it to follow back to the end, or you can kill it to make The End more aggressive but unable to find you as easily.
The Fury: Invincible to your tranq darts until you slash his suit with the combat knife. He also plays a bit like the Vulcan Raven fightif you choose to engage with him "properly". You can also shoot the pipes overhead to put out some of the fires he leaves in his wake. Non-lethal takedown gets you the Fire camo, which halves damage taken by explosions...kinda weak I know but it looks cool.
The Sorrow: You can skip the entire boss fight by taking a fake death pill, followed by revival pill. You get his camo by default.
Volgin: Put on the Raiden mask to distract him long enough for a free hit, only works once. Plus there are pipes in the arena that you can shoot to spray him with water to weaken his electricity. Throwing a Russian Glow cap into the arena will absorb some of his lighting attacks as well. Non-lethal takedown gives you the Cold War camo. Enemy soldiers will hesitate to shoot you while you face them, will attack from behind though.
The Boss: CQC! After spending the entire game getting your ass kicked, you finally get to turn the tables. With careful timing you can counter her CQC throws and throw her to ground for some free shots with the gun of your choice. Non-lethal win nets you the Snake camo, no real special abilities but is effective in just about every environment.
Final Ocelot duel: It is possible to "lose" but the bullet will still be a blank. You can also choose to not fire or miss on purpose.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk, I hope these help you have some more fun with these bosses on future playthroughs.

IMO you missed the point of the ladder and the song. They didn't decide to play the song because the ladder is so long, but the opposite: they made the ladder so long in order to break the pace and allow the player to relax while just listening to the amazing song.
Kojima is a master with unconventional gameplay to throw off the player. Stuff like the psycho mantis reading your memory card and making the controller move in mgs1, Campbell breaking the 4th wall and ordering you to turn off the console in mgs2 are other examples of it.

You're half-right. The sticks control your run and sneak walks. The directional buttons control the stalking walk, which is the slowest movement and drains more stamina but completely silent. So make sure go slap a guard or 2. More practically it allows you to explore the base more leisurely, get familiar with the base ready for the escape sequence and collect items that would otherwise be a pain to get during the initial infiltration and escape section.

Hey Chole! I'd like to point out some things you missed that I'm sure others have already pointed out.
    1. The bolt in your arm was not a bug. If you take too long to remove it Snake's wound will heal around it making removal impossible. A nice detail I've always appreciated.
    2. Pressing the action button during the EVA section will have Snake tell her to follow. Keeping her well fed also increases her movement speed. Not a fix for that segment but it does make it slightly better.
    3. Calling Sigint after fighting the Cobra Unit members will give their lore, but making that optional is an interesting choice.
    4. Not only do you heal by patching yourself up, you also heal by letting those injuries heal over time. In fact, healing the long way grants a superior increase to your health.
On a side note, I'm shocked you didn't mention the solution for The Sorrow "boss fight". How long did it take you to figure that out?

Just watching through your play throughs I notice you don't tend to use lateral thinking which was one of the highlights of the games, and sometimes that's why you don't always feel like you "got it".
Like in MGS1 with mantis, changing your controller port to 2, stops him reading your mind.
With MGS2 vamp, you weren't shooting the knifes
but in this one, you never used the beehives above ocelot to bring him out of cover.
The pain, if you want to deal with bees, in the real world you'd smoke them so smoke grenades are very effective.
The fury's interesting mechanic is if you destroy his fuel tanks on his back
You could of used your tranquilliser on the bosses to take their abilities,
or the end talking about his endurance, and being close to death, if you change the system clock he'll die of age

I was listening to the opening briefing in MGS3 and went "HOLY SHIT! GROZNYJ GRAD IS IN ZANZIBAR LAND,' as I realized the area they described as the Tselinoyarsk roughly corresponded to the geographic location described as the location of Zanzibar Land. It's interesting that Chole seems to prefer streamlined, smooth experiences within scope than more expansive ones. His complaints on the menu struggles here hammer that home. I think it's a perfectly valid perspective that does not have to match any other player's. Things that bother one person about a game may not bother another. Some players want condensed, intensive play experiences and don't care at all if the game feels like a perpetual gauntlet. Others yearn for freedom and exploration and discovery. It's all a matter of perspective and personal taste.

  • @ImNelzy
    @ImNelzy 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Since you’re new to the series I don’t expect you to know all the ins and outs of the game. But most MGS fans would tell you to play the subsistence version of the game instead of the original. So that camera wouldn’t be an issue.
Now secondly the item management is actually not bad at all. As most play throughs you only ever need a few weapons. Now if you’re new and trying everything out I can see that being an issue but even when I started off when I was kid I don’t recall having a problem because I’d just equip the weapons I’d for sure want and that’s it typically never having to go back into it. Only a few moments in the game where something else is required. Also the more weight you’re carrying the more stamina drains which is why you’ll see people carrying the bare minimum.
I also didn’t have an issue with the cure, food or camo menus because although it is going into a menu it felt more immersive in a way. Least as a kid it did. Having to actually eat the food, and cure myself of injuries, and changing what I’m wearing in blend in to the environment just felt more immersive. Could it be executed better? Sure maybe a quick menu in game like the equip menu for items.
But the issue you have with camo is also the same thing as the weapons and items. Although yes you can equip different camos in every area it isn’t needed. You only need to switch your camo about 5 times or 6. As you can get through majority of the game with 1 game as it gives you about 30-50% in most areas. Only needing to change it for a few locations, like the desert mountain top, the little river, the 2 different disguises. Thats 4 there. And swapping back after the disguise is 5.
Also if you take out bosses with non lethal means (except for the end) you get their camos which ocelot gives a camo that helps your aim not shake when stamina is low. Which then allows you to ignore the eating part lol.
Even though the menus are an understandable “complaint” I don’t think it changes the game being the best in the series tbh. It’s truly a masterpiece

I haven't seen the whole review yet (I'm half way there) but so far I think some of your issues come from the crunchy/deadline driven nature of this series of videos. Not a dig at all, and I can see why you would think like that about those things being annoying or waste of time. However, here are my two cents:
-The bosses/cobra squad, have a lot of backstory, it's just one of those "blink" and you miss things, since a lot of them are given on codec calls after beating them. I feel Kojima did this for those players that want a more straightforward cinematic game, so instead of dragging with flashback cutscenes, he chose optional conversations.
-The healing, cammo and item management, I feel might be hit or miss for some. I personally loved the back and forth from menus to gameplay. I see it more as a tactical option than an interruption, since you are not required to do it that often. Good gameplay would prevent you from taking injuries, and wound treatment should be done in safe spaces so you don't take more. And I would only change the item loadout/cammo at the beginning of the areas.
But hey, I played the game back when I was 14, It was a technical marvel at the time, and I hadn't played neither of the previous ones. I think the game could be better with some really simple Quality of Life improvements, like faster loading times, and better frame rate.
P.S: I remembered working really hard to get all the cammos, and I was really pissed that there was a snow cammo, but no snow level.
    Worst game ever, 10/10.

life also regenerates when you crouch in MGS2.
you can toggle between the old & new camera with R3 in Subsistence, it's definitely the best way to play.
    there's a 60 fps code for PCSX2.
stamina also levels up, but it's more granular.
a lot of the difficulty from bosses comes from choosing to go non-lethal. The Fear eats food to recover, so you have to be more aware when playing like that. you are rewarded with extra unlocks.
I didn't mind the Eva part, I was actually pretty invested in getting her through safely, but it was interesting seeing your perspective.
2 & 3 are definitely my favourites, the ability to mess with AI in 3 is unmatched.

Did anyone mention that you can destroy ammo and health storage rooms with TNT and when you go back to those areas the guards will be super hungry with their stomachs growling and desperate for food. You can throw poisonous food at them, they will eat it and instantly die. Also since you destroyed their weapons storage, they will all be short on ammo. So when they go to shoot you after one clip they will switch to their handguns.

The Fear has a number of gimmicks.
He has a range of crossbow bolts that inflict a variety of injury types.
He's mostly invisible which encourages using the thermal goggles if you found them.
The arena is filled with trap which limits evasion some of which are pit traps that instantly kill you. The splits you attention between looking up for The Fear and down to avoid traps.
The Fear's stealth camo drains his stamina. When low enough he uncloaks, becomes slower and will attempt to hunt for food over fighting you. This gives you a breather for your own hunting, healing or clearing away traps.
You can use this to poison by throwing out a poisonous mushroom (there's some in the arena if you're unprepared) or give him food poisoning by throwing out spoilt food as he'll prioritise already spawned food item boxes over hunting.
This is excellent for no kill runs as you can tranq him until he's hungry, food poison him, then get the last hits in while he's vomiting.
Alternatively you can place some TNT/claymore, throw food near it to bait The Fear into it for some Wile E Coyote tomfoolery.

23:23 About the difficulty - That's why I wrote in that long text on your other video _"Consider playing both on Hard, especially MGS3. Normal is too easy."_ - Normal in MGS3 really should be called Easy. The Hard setting is basically what Normal should be. Or to put it another way: Hard is closer to being something that should be called Normal, than Hard. Extreme is appropriately named though (of course there's nothing really extreme about Extreme in any MGS game but in MGS3 like in the other games, Extreme is significantly harder just like it should be). Considering that, MGS3 is actually missing a true Hard setting.

I'm currently playing the Master Collection version of the game on European Extreme and just took him down non-lethally for his rifle + got his camo by "sticking him up". Using thermal helps to track his footsteps and see him in bushes, and the directional mic can help as well. You can also save and come back a week or two later to find him dead of old age (Paramedic warns you about returning soon). I've hit all of the frogs up to this point as well and haven't killed a single enemy. All of the boss fights are a little harder if you do them non-lethally.

The fact that every boss explodes once you beat them is meant as a double reference to both old videogames in general, as well as the fact that all of the bosses in the original Metal Gear games exploded upon defeat! ^^ Even the Boss even explodes, but it's not in the canon game; it's featured in a video that was included in the joke-filled Secret Theater that was a part of the Subsistence release.

I usually tell everyone that this is my favorite metal gear, and I'm fairly certain that's true. But nostalgia for 1 makes me hesitant to admit it. I do think it's definitely the peak of metal gear game play though, and definitely the best one

Subsistance has that much better of a camera. It changes the experience.

It really is a fair bit better when you play it with a fully 3d camera.

In fact, you can give orders to Eva to wait for you at a point and to start following you. Just find a good position and put the guards to sleep and it's done.

Playing with lethal weapons will always make things harder to deal with, especially during the injured EVA section.

Pretty sure the long ladder after the "end" playing the music was a bit of a troll. Was meant to make you think that was coming to the end of the game when really only half way through.
Also, at the time this released there was a big push about non lethal. It is possible to beat the entire game without killing anyone. Makes a whole different challenge to those bosses you had an easy time just standing still and blasting. I also thought finding the frogs was a fun challenge.

The audio issue you had isn't as prominent when using the 3rd person camera, its more reliable as the audio is around where the camera is aiming, not so reliable when switching between fixed camera/audio and first person

Just subbed to your channel, as I've enjoyed a lot of your reviews of games you've done. There's a few things in this review that are either incorrect, or have been looked over. Maybe they were pointed out by others in the comments, but I'm not reading all of them lol.
    1. The time between the Virtuous Mission and Operation Snake Eater isn't 2 weeks, it's 6 days.
    2. The inventory menu (camo, food, cure and equipment) work as intended. It may disrupt the flow of gameplay, but it works in the sense that you can optimise everything and give yourself the best advantages possible without being shot at. Regarding weapons and equipment, it's better this way because I always found it frustrating in MGS1 and 2 that you had to scroll through the entire list to equip what you wanted. In this game, at least you mitigate that problem by selecting 8 or fewer items each, which I thought was a better design.
    3. The ladder section, to me, felt like a couple of minutes of time where you could reflect on the journey so far. That, or Kojima really wanted to incorporate the biggest game of Snakes and Ladders of all time lol.
    4. To get Eva to move at the end of the game, just press the action button and she'll move.
    5. More subjective here as we all play games our own way, but you missed a lot of intricate gameplay mechanics and details. For instance, if you throw a hornets nest at The Pain, the hornets will go to that instead and enhance the quality of it. The Fear can be fed poison dart frogs, rendering it easy to deplete his stamina. The End can be killed early (at the warehouse scene immediately after The Fear goes out to search for you), or if you fast forward the internal clock, he'll die of old age. The Fury is easier to see with NVG. If you wear Raiden's mask, you can get a free shot during the Volgin fight. In the prison, the guard will give you food. If you throw out 3 bits of food back, a cutscene will play. You find that he's Johnny's (from MGS1 and 4) grandfather, also called Johnny, and he'll give you your cig spray. On ps2 version, if you save in the prison, turn it off, then go back to it, there's a hidden mini game in the form of a nightmare. During the last showdown with Ocelot, picking the revolver on the right with no bullets, allows you to unlock the SAA for new playthroughs.
So many things you missed. I recommend playing it a few times, in order to get the most out of this game. You'd probably rate it higher. But for a review of only one playthrough, I can see why this could be considered a fair commentary of the game.
Keep up with the reviews, man. They're good. Been enjoying your Resident Evil ones, too.

I'm sorry but in this day and age there's really no excuse for making the original release of Snake Eater your first playthrough, especially if you're not even going to play it on original hardware. It's not hard to find out in seconds that literally everybody on the planet suggests the subsistance version because of the improved camera and they literally just rereleased the game last year.

It's really not that big of a deal. The games pretty well the same. You're only missing what I would consider extra content. Silly videos, and European extreme. The camera has some difficulty but I managed a complete stealth run through the first release on hardest difficulty without any problems before I even knew the alt version existed.
