    Amazing!! I followed these instructions exactly and my s100 is now working perfectly! I have no technical skill but you made it so easy, I would never have been able to do this without you!! Thanks.
    For anyone trying to do this, it is tedious but not difficult if you have little technical skill like me, but can just follow directions. Ordered the lens on ebay, took me a little over an hour to follow these instructions and do the installation.

      You're very welcome. Glad to see people making use of this video :-)
      S100 is my favorite camera and the only one I keep as 2nd camera because my new one is still unable to replace it. The only thing I miss in S100 is the flipping display for selfie :-)
      Also, check out my other videos about my new camera (with trouble in GPS) and using CHDK on my S100.

    Thank you from London! I have just fixed the S100 I use for underwater photography. You saved me from buying a replacement from eBay or more likely a full new underwater system!
    I had one problem - when I started up the first time I had the same lens error. After disconnecting and reconnecting the cables a couple of times then everything was fine. The bottom cable seems particularly tricky. But it is all working now and I am very happy!

      You're welcome. Did you replace the lens barrow? I did a search on eBay recently. It doesn't seem to have any available.

    Superb tutorial! Successfully replaced the lens of my Canon S100 camera. SO pleased - followed your video, step by step. My only suggestion would be to make sure to be on a hardwood (not carpet/rug) floor to help find the inevitable dropped screws and have tweezers to help re-insert the tiny screws. Making a written record and sticking the screws to the drawings really helped. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

      Mandy Bray You're very welcome. Great to hear another successful story! Also to see people who love their S100 camera as much as I do :-)
      I was working in a hard floor environment. I did drop a screw and it jumped far away from the spot I heard the drop.

    Thank you, this was super helpful. I had a little difficulty figuring out how to get the two smaller ribbon cables back on, but once I did that everything went back together surprisingly easily, and it powered up and worked on first attempt.

    bigboss thanks for your video all i can say i followed the step by step guide you uploaded , and all went to plan one thing i should say the hardest part was removing the lens because from the back metal strip i couldn't figure out what was holding it on the metal strip ,only advice is if doing this for the first time DON'T rush its very doable if you are patient

    I have the same camera broken for years and I have no idea why it just stopped working, maybe I can try to fix it with the help of your video. I bought the g7x mark ii but the size is not as comfortable as the s100

      I love my S100, too. Nowadays you can't find compact camera with GPS because people are using their phone instead.
      I've been using my Sony HX90V since 2015, not very happy, larger and not as user friendly as Canon.
      There are only two things I don't like in S100. It drains battery quickly and have to take selfie blindly :D

    I just replaced the lens group following your video. Thanks for posting it. It seems that lens stuck is quite common fault for the S100. I'ts a pity because it is a great camera...I think the only small one that shotd in raw. Greetings from Italy.

      I agree (although I don't use raw). I still haven't found a better compact camera with GPS. My Sony (thicker and heavier) still can't replace the S100, see my video here:
      th-cam.com/video/CtrBkuGSCFU/w-d-xo.html
      The only reason I leave my Canon at home during holiday, because I can better selfie with the flipped screen of Sony :-) But S100 is my only camera which I haven't sold after buying a new one. I still use it for CHDK stuff.

    good video and i may need to refer to it in the future because when my S100 focuses i can feel a "roughness" in the mechanical parts of the lens. Is this normal..can another S100 owner confirm this? thx in advance.

    This is a great video and helped me successfully take apart and put my camera back together again (twice now). The problem is, both times I did it, the lens I purchased from eBay had focusing problems. The first one (from seller nycom-tech) had a very serious focusing problem, with only maybe a few feet of focus possible (when zoomed out, then up-close macros, or when zoomed in, within a few feet range of whatever you were zoomed on - everything else is very out of focus) and manual focus couldn't fix it at all. The second lens I tried (from seller rongyuanxie) similarly has a focusing problem, though not nearly as extreme (won't fully focus on anything except within a couple feet when zoomed out, but when zoomed in a bit or a lot, can increase range between 10-200 feet.... so landscape focus doesn't work, but still mostly functional, as long as not zoomed all the way out).
    Anyway, I just wanted to point out for everyone else that this video method works great for replacing lens successfully, but apparently a high portion of eBay lens simply aren't fully functional. I'm going to have to buy a new camera now. :-(

    • @bigboss97
      @bigboss97  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Adam Willard Sad to heard that :-( I also noticed something with my new lens in full zoomed-out landscape shot. Not everything is in focus. I didn't check how it was before. But I assume that on a sunny day long distance shots should be able to capture everything in focus. I might be wrong.
      I'm disappointed that Canon has removed the GPS feature from the S-series. I fixed my camera because I couldn't find a substitute :-( I had a G10 before and it was too big as a point&shoot camera. Love the S-series. I'm still waiting for a new one, but please with GPS!

    The video worked for me. First time I put the camera back together it had the lens error again. I took it apart, detached and reattached the three lens connection cables. Then the camera worked.

      Congratulation! :-)
      I did have the same issue as shown on my video. The cable was even covering the sensor hole in my first trial hahaha

    Now that you have opened up your S100, what is the chance that you would know the placement of the internal battery and its specifications? I have to set the time or enable GPS and automatic time from GPS every time I charge my battery. I know this is a common problem, but I have yet to find any reference to a repair method.

    • @bigboss97
      @bigboss97  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, I didn't pay attention to that when I opened it. But I won't recommend anyone to open it if the camera is not practically dead. It's too good to be wasted :-) Especially, Canon seems to have stopped the S-series.
      Can your internal battery last for 10s or so? Then I suggest you to buy a cheap replacement battery online. Insert that in while you are charging your original one.

    • @trakthor
      @trakthor 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I have several batteries and have learned to swap it quickly to take advantage of the short period before everything is reset. However, it is annoying having to do this, especially when I loan my camera to less tech-savvy people. I was wondering if the battery is visible to the right of the lens as seen from the front. There is a shiny metal part that looks like a battery clip. Visible between your thumb and capacitor at 6:24. It goes away together with the capacitor in the next scene and looks even more like a battery clip at 6:38. Seems pretty accessible to me. What do you think?

    • @bigboss97
      @bigboss97  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know it's annoying to live with that. Especially the S100 can drain the battery quickly by itself. OK, let me tell you something and then you decide :-)
      We, compact camera users, are point-and-shooters. We accept the fact that there are always many bad shots, e.g. wrong focus etc. After my lens replacement whenever I see a bad shot I start blaming on the cheap lens. But in my case a bad shot is still better than no shot at all :-)
      In your case, I don't want you to suspect some home-made issue when you see a bad shot in the future.

    I know this is a very old post but what was the problem/fault with the original lens barrel assembly? Thanks

    • @bigboss97
      @bigboss97  ปีที่แล้ว

      The camera starts and shuts down immediately without retracting the lens barrel as demonstrated in the video. Basically, the barrel got stuck and triggered an error.

    • @Sapper094
      @Sapper094 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, l understood that, l just wondered if you inspected the old lens to see what caused the error. Dirt in the barrel mechanism, broken cable, unseated cable? Basically was the old unit fixable without needing to buy a new lens 😊
