Pranksters were once seen as gods around these parts, however have faded into obscurity, with the only survivors being those who have been smart enough to evolve their content. Its embarrassing how they seem to think shouting "it's a prank" somehow makes them immune to getting their ass' kicked
it works in "controlled" environments like schools, not so much in the real world with grown adults
But also 99% of the vids were fake
Besides saying that constantly, for some odd reason they all look similar, have similar vibes and similar voices and mannerisms. It's creepy.
Same can be said about any trendy social media genre, and really about any group of people with a following. Certain aestetic and mannerisms become associated with the genre and people fitting get platform, the cycle establishes inself.

I don’t know about that. Not saying that it isn’t an inconvenience for some, but a lot of the ones that I watched seemed to enjoy the pranks.
Edit: Let me just clarify that I’m just saying there are good and harmless pranks out there that people genuinely enjoy. One example I know of is MagicofRahat. In his drive through videos people are always laughing and pulling out their phones. Maybe OP was just referring to the stupid pranks that are out there that inconvenience people, in which case I agree. But from my pov at the time I thought they were talking about *all* pranks.

I love when these "pranksters" got their asses kicked. Its the only time I laughed. So many laws broken. It was when the "pranks" started hurting people and getting "pranksters" jailed that it died.
Also legit criminals would use prank trends to commit crimes. The scary clown trend is a prime example. Several of them were actual murderers. Then you heard about scary clown "pranksters" getting beat up left and right. Like the dumbass scary clown that was beat up trying to scare what turned out later to be gang members.

I think Joey missed a large part as to why Prank videos became out of fashion. The pranks got worse and worse were it became to the point where these content creators were picking on the community and you genuinely felt bad for these people. There were large communities trying to shut these prank videos down because of it. There was even criminal charges and court dates because it of it. At that point its not funny any more.
The worst group for the 3x brothers (Name slips my mind) who did crazy things to the public. Like dressed a terrorist and run through a mall. Or doing drive bys and throwing out fake bombs. It's not funny at that point.

There was also that one kid who didn't realize videos were fake, and did (I think if I remember) a killer clown prank and ran at a family with a knife and got shot.

I remember when a guy did a “prank” asking black people for a place called “Ni**a” and almost nobody got angry and that was used to prove some similar pranks were fake.
I fondly remember the “pulling people’s pants down in the hood” prank. The funniest part was the prankster screaming “stop, it’s just a prank bro” while realizing the prank victim had a gun in his pants

It’s just a word. I was given a nigga pass in high school because me and friends loved quoting Katt Williams and my friend got tired of me asking him to say the word mid monologue. I didn’t wanna be racist and he told me it’s how you say it. Once that taboo was gone and I could say it comfortably in completely non offensive ways i didn’t sound like the awkward white kid saying the Word to get a rise or to be cool.
This is the attitude everyone needs to adopt.

When I learned that the "Greatest Freakout Ever" was (allegedly) fake, it was like learning that Santa Claus wasn't real... a couple weeks ago.
and all the psycho videos from McJuggerNuggets were fake too that was a big punch in the face

I'm surprised there was no mention of Sam Pepper. In my opinion he was a catalyst in the prank genre becoming more and more sour.... maybe even the souring of genuine pranks which lead to more fake pranks.

I think that's because of all the controversy surrounding Sam is mostly what lead to his decline, he wasn't going into the people behind the pranks more so what the pranks represented and it's effect on the platform, you can't talk about Sam pepper without addressing his controversies and this is a pretty short video, he'd take up 10 minutes of the video just based on some of his scandals.
I hated this time. I thought it was dangerous to the people doing it, and impressionable people watching it.

Why was JS interviewed at all he was unapologetically part of the problem. JS was caught creating fake prank videos and swore up and down it was real until he couldn’t deny it any longer. I've never taken any pleasure from laughing at the reaction of someone, who believes themselves to either be in an uncomfortable situation, or in imminent danger. I've always instantly empathised with the victims of these videos. If I were put in their situation, I'd be beyond livid.

@Molaqate Yaran Still, most of these channels were directed to children and they grew up causing them to lose their audience. Around the time all that happened pranking wasn’t the same old 2014-2016 with 2017 a wave of children went to vlogging channels instead of prank channels.

Nothing beats people popping out of legit mail boxes, or construction workers pretending to 'need a hand' with some obscure task, and watching the random stranger freak out.

Remy Gaillard is basically the only prankster who is 100% based. He is funny as hell but doesn't hurt or really even scare anyone. Pranksters these days just seem to be dudes who trash their girlfriends dinner or put spray paint in their hairspray and awful mean spirited shit like that and I hate it.

Pranking is about shock and reactional humour. When the idea well runs dry, viewers get bored by seeing the same thing over and over again. I think that's the #1 reason it stopped trending.
That was epic and bigdawstv never seemed to crazy from when I watched them surprised they were mentioned then I realized they were given shout outs at the end for keeping it real😂

It seems like Nelk deserved a bit of observation in this video. Their ascension from being generic pranksters at the tail end of the prankster wave to multimillionaires with a completely unrelated brand to pranking is pretty impressive.
2016-17 Nelk was top tier, hasn’t been the same since they moved to LA

I feel so old cuz I was watching these videos from 2015-2017 and now we've got documentaries on them. I will say, the most legendary prankster channel is definitely TopNotchIdiots. They are definitely not faking those and one of them is going to get seriously hurt one day.

I remember towards the end of the era how they resorted to calling pranks “social experiments” in an attempt to fight the backlash. I also respect Joey’s redemption arc. Not only was he the leader of the genre, he eventually would go on to formally laying it to rest by talking with creators openly just like in this case. It did however give rise to the hated phrase “it’s just a prank bro!” Still makes me roll my eyes just hearing it lol.

Pranks never died... the bar just got higher. VlogCreations is still going strong and their content is very entertaining. I think mainly the pranks that fell from grace were just the ones that were clearing hurting/harming the victims in some way.

Nope the bar got lower, VlogCreation literally stopped posting violent, upsetting, and rude pranks when youtube being to stop demonizing violent pranks and change their TOS.
Now, VlogCreations only posts harmless and kind pranks ever since the monetizations and TOS change and sometimes even pays/tips people for the slightest trouble or inconvenience.

You can clearly see a view curve peaked at 2-3 years ago on that channel before it went down.
None of this year video came close to breaking 2 M but 2-3 years ago 3 - 4 M vid is pretty common, Therefore “dying”.
I would personally use the word “decline” since 1M is still a very healthy view count and no where close to being dead.

It's weird looking back at it now, but 'Pranks and a lot of the other trendy videos that were popular on TH-cam were all aimed at a young impressionable audience.
That's youtube in a nutshell. There's always a new generation of impressionable kids with a shit ton of time to waste.

This is not just about making a living online doing prank videos, and the downfall, but a look into TH-cam as a whole, and how it's changed. What's now frowned upon, was once how people grew their channels and got monetized.
because people will gladly censor themselves when money is involved.
I remember one night in ~2014 I clicked on a gold digger prank video that was on my suggested list. It was kind of entertaining so I clicked another one. That one made me laugh so I clicked another one. 5 hours later I had done nothing but watch different prank videos it seems I fell down some sort of rabbit hole.
I was pretty disturbed that I could waste so much time of my life so I never clicked on another prank video again. But it was that night that I realized how big the "prank" community was on youtube.

The last time I ever saw perhaps a viral video that has the most viewed w/ 100 Million views is 2017, the New Zealand mask singer video. Then by the end of 2018 most viewed viral video is just Kylie Jenner vid "To Our Daughter" that hasn't reach it peaked at 100 Million views
So it's all just a blurred to me that I don't usually see these viral video that happened so fast in this current TH-cam Algorithm however... A lot of old interesting vid coming back on recommended page so I guess it is "The Rise and Fall... And Rise Again of TH-cam Viral Video"? idk

I have to disagree. There was no youtuber called out these pranks until 2016 so there were no bad controversy to prank genre yet. Heck, even myself use to watch these prank videos because we don't know if they are faking or not cause no one called out.
