  • (9 Jun 1972) As part of the 40,000 mile Sales Promotion tour, Concorde took to the skies from Tehran Airport, with the Shah of Iran. Officials were pleased with the flight, they ordered three aircraft. This is the first definite order received for the Anglo French 'plane. I was there among several other Iran Air pilots invited on a subsequent demo flight.
So sad what happened to that country and a great airline!

My father Frank Robson (aviation correspondent for the Daily Express at the time) was on the tour and remembers it to this day. He has great personal 'cine film' footage.

The SHAH wanted the best of everything for Iran and Iranians but some sick vengeful and ungrateful Iranians wished his death and that's why we all are paying the price in such a painful ways.JAVID SHAH.

Iran was a world power at that time. It was like it was inside the European Union. You didn't need a VISA, an Iranian passport and you could get on any flight to any European country. Shah had very strict rules for safety too, is the USA changes a part at 1000 miles, Iran had to change that part at 750 miles to ensure absolute safety. Compare that today, Iran is the laughing stock of the world. Those bearded men and their robes think its the 7th century. And the 50 year old planes that Shah bought are dropping out of the sky today because they refuse to change the parts.

The Shah actually changed his mind about the Concord airplanes and never purchased them. He realized it was too extravagant for Iran.
