  • Guitarists purchase brand new guitars for a few reasons; new features, new condition and a warranty. But, how good is that warranty? How long it is and what does it cover. Warranties vary from company to company and can change overtime. Today Chris and Cooper break down what is and isn't covered under warranties from some of the world's top guitar companies.

I purchased a brand new 2024 Guild F40 traditional in March. Shipped from a big box gear store. When I opened it from the box. Stunning and great sounds BUT upon further inspection I saw dried white chalk like between the neck joint and body. I thought it was polish residuals tried to wipe it off-nope, it wouldn't come off. Called the seller...they came 10% back of the sale and apologized for not doing a perfect "55" inspection. I didn't give in. Since I live 49 miles from the Oxnard California Guild plant. I called and followed up with an email. Told them about the issue. Guild told me to bring it to the plant. They inspected it and it came out it was dried glue. I left it there. Was told in less the two weeks the issue would be corrected. Sure enough, got the email to pick it up and 100% successful! Great customer service and they also apologized for allowing a guitar to leave the Guild Guitar plant!

I purchased a Taylor 614 brand new, and it had bad fret buzz when it arrived. I sent it back to the dealer, they worked on it, and then returned it within a few weeks. Again, it still had fret buzz. I then sent it to Taylor and said I thought there was something fundamentally wrong with the instrument. A service rep offered to send me another new 614 at their factory that he thought I would like. I agreed. The 614 that arrived was absolutely amazing and unique. The sides were quilt maple instead of flame, the back appeared to have a higher grade of flame maple than the one I had purchased, and there were even some very beautiful blonde streaks in parts of the ebony. I could not have been more impressed with how Taylor responded to my concerns quickly and seemed to go above and beyond to help me feel better about my purchase.

I knocked one of my Taylor’s off the stand. Rather than spend $300 with Taylor, I took it to one of their recommended authorized repair luthiers. Six weeks later I got it back and spent $250. The repair was crappy. I ended up sending it half way across the country to Taylor and they did a fantastic repair. I’ll never use an authorized dealer, it’s going back to the factory. Lots of additional money for a 312ce

I purchased a 2017 Martin D-18 in 2017 and it’s been a wonderful sounding acoustic. Until a few months ago I noticed the back binding was popping out at the waist. I’m the original owner so I contacted Martin and they said it wasn’t under warranty for repairs. So I had to get it repaired locally. I’m just waiting for the rest of the guitar to come unglued now. And this is a well cared for and maintained acoustic. Oh well. I hope they improved their QC.

Nearly three months later it was returned to me repaired but without even an email suggesting an apology for the lack of quality assurance.
Repairers are not at fault, so be kind. Manufacturers use them as a buffer for any complaints.

I am the original owner of a Martin D-18 Centennial model. The binding began to separate on both waistlines. I brought it to a Martin authorized Luthier for repair. While the binding re-glue was covered under warranty, damage to the finish from where the binding separated was not covered. I ended up paying out of pocket to have the finish repaired. I was disappointed that Martin would not cover the additional work needed to repair the finish as the guitar was and is in mint condition except for the binding separation. Anyway, the repair was done with expertise and the guitar lives on.

Huss and Dalton doesn't have a good warranty either. I bought one OM new from what I thought was a reputable dealer 1300 miles away based on a video demo. It arrived with a buzz on the G-string: the nut cracked. The dealer said: "no problem, it's covered by manufacturers warranty " The manufacturer said call the shipping company (UPS) who said I could not prove it happened in shipping. Go back to the dealer. Dealer directed me back to the manufacturer, who suggested I use ACC glue and bone dust for a nut completely cracked in a few pieces. They would not cover it in their warranty. The dealer would not cover it. UPS said sorry. I went to have it repaired locally, and that wasn't all that was broke. So Huss and Dalton, never again. And that dealer in St. LOUIS, never again. If I can't get it locally from Alamo or another reputable dealer, I don't need it.

For Martin to charge you for a finish repair that was caused by their crappy binding adhesion - which is a known fail point for Martins - tells me they're a brand approaching Gibson type 'buy it for the label' status. And they're going to learn the hard way, soon, that poor customer service is sending folks who prize quality over a 'label' off in other directions. I just bought a Hsienmo guitar on a whim recently and was shocked: The fit, finish and tone/sustain of this parlor sized sinker redwood/cocobolo guitar competes with martins and taylors 3x its cost.

I sent a vintage LP Custom to Gibson for a top to bottom checkout last year - paid for a refret, plek, everything else was fine. It came back to me w/ extensive finish damage that wasn't there when I sent it in. Fortunately, I had taken about 15 pictures before I shipped it - they had none to counter, so Gibson Repair did the right thing, had me ship it back and refinished the area. Point is - even factory repairs can be questionable quality. Your best bet, i think, is to find a great local luthier and ensure he stays in business by giving him yours.
