Gentlemen! I live in Denmark. I will likely never have an occasion to do business with your store. However, I watch your videos and enjoy them thouroughly. Listen to the podcast as well. Thanks for all you do. All the best
Both amazing guitars. After playing them in store I walked out with the 000-28 but then a few months later fell for a CEO-7 which in my opinion is the best sounding mahogany guitar that Martin makes. Incredible playing as always Cooper!
I didn't know that was a question. But I fully agree. Of the 2 I prefer the 000-28 tone, it just sounded more silky and rich. Currently I play a OMC16e Ovangkol, D-35 and D12-28 but had a 000M in the past as a comparison to these. I have no idea why the Ovangkol OMC16e was discontinued, maybe didn't sell well, but it is my favorite of all the Martins I have ever played. It is a very balanced tone without the typical mid-scoop. The others would go before that one.
Mahogany for me. Always felt it to be ‘honest’. Both are incredible. I ordered a 0000-18 (M-18) from Martin Custom Shop; 10-12 month build time, almost 5 months in…. So stoked!
Mahogany all day long for me. I wouldn’t say no to either but that woody warmth from mahogany just wraps you like a warm hug. Big fan of 18 style for dreadnought and OOO but I hear you Cooper on rosewood for an OM … that is one time when rosewood might just nip it. All things considered a standard OOO-18 just might be my desert island guitar. Thanks for the video lads 👍
Ha! We have no Martin walls in Rhode Island! A few cool shops though. I chose the 000-18 and it never fails to impress me- so articulate, warm, forgiving, and easy to play!. What a gem. Great video and amazing playing.
000-18 for me. I've owned a few. Currently a custom Shop 000-18 with Adirondack/Sinker Mahogany, golden era bracing. This is Mahogany Heaven !! Thanks again for a great video.
I’m proud to say I have a ‘72 000-28!!!! Originally owned by my mother who very graciously passed it down to me (she still has another vintage, her other is D-35). Love watching these reviews and comparisons, thanks for your valuable insight!! 💛
Great comparison! I realize that in store availability is frequently an issue with the CEO-7, but a comparison between that and a 00-18 would also be cool. A L-00 & CEO-7 would also be cool….maybe all three.
I’m upset you did this video. About 6 years ago I sold my 00018 after being convinced I needed rosewood. I sold the 18 , purchased the 28 and was just getting over the loss of the 18 until I saw this video. Now I’ve got to be depressed all over again. Seriously, thanks for the video. I have learned I’m a mahogany guy more than rosewood, although I purchased the 00016 Streetmaster recently. Thank you again.
@@DomCAFC Definitely a louder guitar than my 00015sm. I think it likes a bit harder strumming. I’m a finger picker, but with a pick, this has great clarity, column and sustain of sound. If I’m going to be fingerpicking I prefer the mahogany.
That’s really interesting, I bought a 000-16 streetmaster recently and still working out what I think of it. I’ve actually found that when I strum too hard it feels a bit strident - maybe that will improve as I adjust to it with time! Would love to own a 15sm at some point!
@@DomCAFC I’ve had the 00016 for a while now and I’m still trying to decide if I like it. I’m primarily a finger picker, and my 00015sm is my favorite guitar. But there are a few songs with moderate strumming I like the 16. But I’m not convinced it’s a forever guitar.
In 2012, my favorite guitar store let me compare a 000-18 and 000-28 for an hour or so. My wife would alternately hand me one to play, blindfolded, and I walked out with the 28. The 18 just sounded muffled to both of us while the 28 rang and sounded so clear. Today, it would not be as easy to choose.
I went to buy a HD35, then recalled how much I was impressed by the 000-18 at another store. So I played a 000-18 and loved it. I had to try the 000-28 many times, thinking I’d like it more but for me it wasn’t even close. The 000-18 was for me. Now it was a matter of which of the 2 new 000-18’s in stock I pick. I walked out with both the HD35 and one of the 000-18. It was a great guitar day, and my wife in the car said good for you 😊
My wife waits in the car and usually says, "you don't need another guitar" Last time she handed me plastic and said, "put it on here" I selected an OM 42
@@WCWMidnight how do you like the 000-18? I like the HD35 as I can never get enough bass. My Yamaha LL16D gives me plenty of treble if I want it and my FS5 is nice complement as well.
@jaepark8922 I didn't purchase the 000-18. I purchased the Gibson L 00. One of the reasons was the bass, and it just had that spark the Martin was missing. I also have a Martin D18, Gibson J45, some Taylor's and others. The D35 is my favorite right now.
So many choices and only 10 fingers... life is grand . I have a D-18 GE and the CEO-7, and others. The CEO-7 is Martin's version of the L 00, with red spruce and mahogany. I recently got a rosewood OM@@WCWMidnight
I come just to hear another amazing guitar composition from you guys! This sounded so progressive, original and exquisitely complex! What a lovely piece of music! I have such a long way to go!
My first Martin is a 000-27 (slot head, 12 fret, gloss top herringbone soundhole, mahogany). I've since gotten over two dozen Martins but that 16 is still my favorite.
I’ve been longing for this head-to-head! I played a D18 at GC a while ago and fell in love with it. But the harmonic overtones in the rosewood with those clear trebles and bases, push all of my buttons. So rosewood it would be. But I would love to own either!
I have a 000M and love it. I have a OM35 and they are also really nice. The emporium in Lexington has a Marting wall, Taylor, and bunch that cost more than my car. 30 minute drive from Rhode Island.
Throw an Adirondack VTS on top of the 000-18 and throw in a K&K Trinity, and I'm sold. Thanks Chris and Cooper. PS it depends on what you want to do. Jam, 000-18. Solo, 000-28.
I happen to be the lucky owner of the very best sounding 000-18 on the face of this planet (I know, don’t look any further, I have it, it’s mine!), but I would have no problem owning a good 000-28 as well. 🧡🧡🧡
I was deciding between a 000-18 and 000-28 in May and went with the 000-18 for the sound, despite thinking I preferred the aesthetic of the 000-28. Now I think there's an unstated beauty and pureness to the look of the 000-18. When I see the 000-28 now, it is not as appealing to me.
That’s what I did with a new d18. I typically buy used, worn in guitars and was getting acquainted with this semi-vintage d35 that had a neck reset and bridge re-glue-it sounded great. I then played this new d18 and it was an instant sell for me, even with the 1.75 nut width that I didn’t prefer but now used to it. I’ve still yet to own a rosewood acoustic… always gravitate back to mahogany.
I find the difference mainly to be that the 18 is more finger style friendly and the 28 responds better to a pick. I have both and that's what I find out here at home as well. It takes a bit more input to get the volume and tone out of the rosewood,
You can. It's called Custom Shop. It just costs a lot and you wait a long time. They will make almost anything you can dream up for a PRICE$$$$$$$$! Once priced a D12-35 with slot headstock and 12 fret neck. Instead I bought a D35 AND a D12-28 and saved money.

And while a $500 delta in msrp, I think you get the sense that you're getting more what you paid for overall. It is more special. The 18 appears almost too plain--again in this body style and by comparison, and looks like it could be any number of other guitars, including Martin's "lesser" series. However, when you move to the Standard D series, the playing field is leveled a bit more "for some reason," (the 18's more basic trim less a liability) it truly does become more about sound preferences. I like my D-18 and D-28 equally well--for different reasons. As Chris I believe, but also perhaps Cooper, intimated - a cool hybrid and one I might have custom made, when my "ship comes in," is an 18, i.e. mahogany b&s, with 28 appointments, including the volute. This is essentially what Ricky Skagg's Bourgeois Country Boy (dreadnaught) is-- "a mahogany D-28." Very few nits to pick on that one. Edit: If you're seeing strikethroughs, that's not me. When I made a correction-edit, what I see is a lot of strikethroughs, and not even on my correction. A glitch in the YT software perhaps.
Great video and comparison. Wouldn't mind seeing a video comparing the 000-28 to the 000-28EC. And for the love of God, people, please resist the urge to respond to this comment with "The only differences between the 000-28 and 000-28EC are BlaH bLaH bLAh." On the 18, going from finger picking to strumming, there is a difference. Not as warm. On the 28, there is little difference. Both warm and sustain. I have a 00028MD. Do the 00028 vs the 00028MD.
The tone difference is striking. If you had the same pickup in both guitars, would you hear as much difference plugged in? And still have the midrange scoop in the rosewood? Just curious.
That depends on the type of pickup. If it an under saddle pickup or soundboard transducer then it won’t matter. If it has a mic component then the difference would be heard. - Chris

Watch you guys a bunch. Great videos. Question for you. I’m looking for a budget friendly comp guitar to the Martin OMJM. OOO/OM body, 25.4 scale, 1 11/16 nut, Sitka top, Sapale/Mahogany sides. Price range $1,000 - $1,500. Is there any Martin out there like this?
I got a Martin 000-1 1998 USA preowned in inmaculate condition (Ireland 1200 euro, in the USA should be cheaper). Solid sitka spruce top, laminated mag sides and solid mag back, 25.4 lenght scale. Sounds amazing. Eventually I would like to get a 000-18, but I am very happy with the purchase.

@@MartiOjeda I decided to spend a few more bucks. Just bought an OM-21. Loving it.
Martin is a great guitars made but more 200 year they need to re-designed out side for more better look as Taylor made .the sound of Martin guitar is so goods
