He is very brilliant! I love when he went deep in the conversation about separating yourself from the brand. Top model was never about the models. It was to exploit the models to benefit the top model brand, meaning Tyra.
This moment is beautiful because it is making people speak their truth in Hollywood. Jay is absolutely a pure heart. The interviewer you are so so amazing. Thank you both for this. We tend to idolize people so much that we forget that they have flaws.

Ok. So now I'm totally binge watching ANTM Cycle 9 & over-analyzing EVERY scene between Tyra & Jay. This "SIP" of Tea was freaking HoT & DeLiCiOuS! Justin, I could watch you interview people all day. 💕
Be careful following Jay's "just do the free job!" advice. Sometimes, it's actually bad advice, and if you work for free, then try to get paid work doing what you used to do for free, you might find yourself having to justify demanding paid work when you worked for free in the past.
@@janathelamb3 they would know if they know who I did the free job for. And if I put the job I did for free on a resume and they asked me what I made doing it. Making connections and getting good references to use to get work is really the only reason to do the free job in the first place.
Rumor has it that when Tyra was just starting out, she had this attitude, which came off as "I'm better than you". Anyway, Naomi was already established in the industry, as one of the Trinity with Linda and Christy. Now, when you have that kind of attitude towards someone like Naomi, you will get checked. Naomi will put you in your place. Tyra has played the victim ever since. We all know who the "real" supermodel is. NAOMI!
I feel sad for Jay, I think the real reason he stayed until cycle 18 was that he thought Tyra was mad at him and he thought by staying that would heal their friendship 😭, cause I see that he regards Tyra as his best judy, I can't imagine how he felt when Tyra ignored him 😔.
And yet people are attacking him for sharing his experience. Yes the show gave him a platform and made his name well known but if the environment was getting toxic as time went on, I don't blame him for leaving
jay was a jerk. he made fun of the models. he criticized the models. he bullied the models. nothing classy about that nor is talking bad about your former boss
Incredibly wise to admit he was hurt by Tyra’s actions but also empathizing with the industry pressures around her that might have influenced the catty behavior. It’s nice that he’s telling both sides as he might perceive it
I remember being in middle school in the mid 2000’s watching ANTM and Jay Manuel was showing the girls how to properly blend eyeshadow. There were almost no TH-cam tutorials back then! Lots of respect to Jay👏
Sorry, but after watching al these ANTM videos over the past couple months, I dont think Jay is very innocent. He had some pretty rude moments and questionable things done and said.
He says he was adopted. Is he saying his birth parents are black and white or his adoptive parents? I feel like he’s actually coloured but I could be mistaken
Jay cannot say one bad thing about ANTM, because he was one of the main contributors to the negativity of the show. The disrespect shown to the girls was blandly shown through the controversial shoot challenges, the way they were spoken to and even through casting. Those girls were doing shoots and being judged on things that no professional photographer in the real world would have them do. But, I get it, it's a TV show, so they needed the drama and controversy.
I never thought Jay is black. I thought he was a white guy with a serious tanning obsession. He and miss Jay were definitely an extra spice of ANTM and when they left, it honestly got quite boring.
I hated how controlled his personality was on this show. I wanted him to have the opportunity to have his authentic self show. I felt like Everything on ANTM was scripted and fake.
The show is so scripted and fake its reality tv and some of the ANTM models exposed ANTM on TH-cam even the casting part is really shady. I grew up with this show and as I grew older re-watching it back its like wow Tyra is not a nice person and some of the stuff is just beyond ridiculous. It doesn't surprise me the way Jay was treated because she didn't even treat the models with respect. Jay deserves better he is a favorite of mine and Nigel Barker.
It was reallyyy shady how they all pretended they wanted him for one more cycle so Tyra can get some kind of senseless revenge for him wanting to pursue other things. I am Tyra is very nice but with all the power she had, it may have gotten into her head a bit.
@@halitst1 Naomi is a diva but she owns it.... that’s the key. Tyra fakes like she’s Sweet and down to earth. At least with Naomi you know what you’re getting.

I know Jay isn’t bothered by it, but is anyone else concerned Tyra thought he should work for free so she could “try him out?” Pay people for their work.
I was never too fond of Tyra seeing how she YELLED at Tiffany in that way. And then seeing how she still whines and complains about Naomi Campbell made not like her even more.
i understood why she yelled at Tiff. not saying it was appropriate... but i believe she felt in that moment tiff WASN'T taking her opputunity responsibly its hard for brown girls like tiff to get in the business and that was tyra pain yelling she wasn't trying to be mean in the moment. that was HURT. deep hurt
Toyanda Powell No. Tyra yelled at Tiff because she felt like Tiff took the opportunity she gave her too lightly. It was 100% personal! It wasn’t about the opportunity but more about Tyra giving it. Tyra was offended because she had given herself and that show a sense of “self-importance “. And she felt like Tiff didn’t respect the “powerhouse” that Tyra believes she is. In my experience, different people handle disappointment in different ways. Tyra felt like Tiff should express her sadness in a certain way..... but Tiff’s expression was different than what Tyra expected. This DOESN’T mean that Tiff wasn’t taking it seriously. It just means that Tiff expresses herself in a different way. Everyone isn’t gonna cry. We are all different. Tyra didn’t understand that because her ego is too big.
Yeah that was some bull, humiliating that girl like that. Tyra shouldn't have even wasted the girl's time. She knew there was no way in hell Tiff was going to win, but she couldn't rightfully get rid of her because she was actually a decent model. Tiffany was rough around the edges and controversial which makes for good TV . Then they come up with this BS acting challenge and eliminates her based not her being able to do a Cockney accent . And don't get me started on Boris Kodjoe and his crack about her "being on the plantation." There are girls who have gotten much farther in the competition and done way worse. Hell, some of them even won.
@@toyandapowell1630 I don’t agree because I do think that Tiffany was Genuinely upset. But, Not everybody processes pain same way. I’m thinking Tyra wanted thee typical breakdown reaction and Tiffany didn’t give it. I used to LOVE Tyra. When i used to watch ANTM i was 14,15,16 years old and i was so impressed by her beauty, she was funny to me, she was honest and elegant... But wow, was i wrong. I guess i was impressionable. However, i can totally see now what she has been doing with the show: she sold a tv show where SHE could be at charge and could be a goddess figure because she needed that attention. "Tyra mail!" is something that i thought was cute, but now i see that and all her pictures at the houses being something cult-like. For real. The show was NEVER about giving girls the opportunity to be real models. The show was about TYRA GETTING ALL THE ATTENTIONS SHE THOUGHT SHE DESERVED. She has always had this complex, like "Naomi Campell did this and that to me, they didn't want me anywhere, it was hard for me" which i get and i believe 100%, but it doesn't look like she learnt anything from that experience. The show was a mockery and they just laughed at those poor girls. Nasty. Not classy. Not cute.
I always like Jay but hearing him speak from the heart made me love and respect him even more. My heart goes out to him and the terrible position he found himself in with a former friend. Much love to you, Jay.

I love the fact both of The J's (Jay and J) tell the truth in their own special youtube channel about the truth behind every episodes per cycle of what exactly was going on. They spilled the TEA but in a polite way.

"Fame isn't a real thing, and you have to keep the brand of who you are and who you are completely separate…There'll be a place when everybody loves you, but they're loving the brand of who they think you are. And that's not you. It can over-inflate your sense of self, and inevitably, they will tear that brand down. At some point. Always. And if you keep yourself separate from your brand, then it keeps your core identity intact." That is a truly brilliant quote if there ever was one!

Those people in high positions can afford to pay you so why do it for free. Work is work, not slave labour
He is very brilliant! I love when he went deep in the conversation about separating yourself from the brand. Top model was never about the models. It was to exploit the models to benefit the top model brand, meaning Tyra.
That's right. Loved that show when I was growing up, but stopped watching it when I realized none of the girls could be as good as Tyra.
This moment is beautiful because it is making people speak their truth in Hollywood. Jay is absolutely a pure heart. The interviewer you are so so amazing. Thank you both for this.
We tend to idolize people so much that we forget that they have flaws.
Totally agree!!
Pure?! Lmao absolutely not. He was almost as bad as her.
2 models were literally pushed into sexual assult by him. He would body shame the models and constantly give cruel unnecessary criticism. He is well spoken so it might sound like he got brains but watching back omg this man is just as bad as the rest. Jessica kobeissi makes great reaction videos about the things that went down. Take a look

Ok. So now I'm totally binge watching ANTM Cycle 9 & over-analyzing EVERY scene between Tyra & Jay. This "SIP" of Tea was freaking HoT & DeLiCiOuS! Justin, I could watch you interview people all day. 💕
It was very toxic
Be careful following Jay's "just do the free job!" advice. Sometimes, it's actually bad advice, and if you work for free, then try to get paid work doing what you used to do for free, you might find yourself having to justify demanding paid work when you worked for free in the past.
Completely agree.
Agreed
Kimberley Hunter How would potential employers know you worked for free?
@@janathelamb3 they would know if they know who I did the free job for. And if I put the job I did for free on a resume and they asked me what I made doing it.
Edit: they would also find out if you used the company/business/connection you did the free job for as a reference. Making connections and getting good references to use to get work is really the only reason to do the free job in the first place.
Sometimes the free job - “internship” can get you the experience needed for the paid jobs.
NAOMI!
Naomi is The Goat
PERIODT!!!!!
Rumour has it...if you trust rumours youre doomed
Funkybear ! Oh Tyra, stop!✋
@@polyprinz 🙄
I feel sad for Jay, I think the real reason he stayed until cycle 18 was that he thought Tyra was mad at him and he thought by staying that would heal their friendship 😭, cause I see that he regards Tyra as his best judy, I can't imagine how he felt when Tyra ignored him 😔.
And yet people are attacking him for sharing his experience. Yes the show gave him a platform and made his name well known but if the environment was getting toxic as time went on, I don't blame him for leaving
I loved tyra i love jay i loved each one for who they were dont forget this was a show with drama ...
Exactly
I would love to here Ms. J’s stories
Especially with how long she left. Then came back
Jay is so classy. Tyra was the reason I didn’t watch ANTM. I saw through her fakeness a long time ago.
This was a show dont forget that
🤣🤣 I cant stand Tyra but I love top model and sometimes her crazy antics
I saw how fake she was on punked 😂
jay was a jerk. he made fun of the models. he criticized the models. he bullied the models. nothing classy about that nor is talking bad about your former boss
Me too
Incredibly wise to admit he was hurt by Tyra’s actions but also empathizing with the industry pressures around her that might have influenced the catty behavior.
Yes, he helped me out with that, too!
After all these years Mr.Jay looks great and the classiest tea I’ve ever sipped, I even had my pinky up.
He’s so intelligent woooow! Forgot how much I loved him on ANTM
Still love Jays voice! Brings back so many antm-memories! He's so great!
I honestly can't imagine how Janice and Tyra were ever in the same room, Janice does not strike me as a person who would take that crap, lolol

💯

Cycle 1 and 3
When him and ms Jay left. I stopped watching the show, it was boring after they left.
Same
Ditto kiddos
yeah me too
I want them to reuinte and do a show together. I don't care what they do (but better set in the fashion industry) and I would watch it hard.
True!!! Didn’t watch any of the seasons after they left and that’s when ANTM start to go downhill.
His parents are from South Africa 🥰 that’s why he has the spirit of “Ubuntu” Kindness, sense of humanity ❤️
Exactly what I was thinking ❤️❤️ sam’thandi ❤️🥰
🇿🇦 all the way!
Yup absolutely 🇿🇦
I think Africans from Africa are more humble and humanity compare to black Americans ❤️
He says he was adopted. Is he saying his birth parents are black and white or his adoptive parents? I feel like he’s actually coloured but I could be mistaken
Honey he just experienced the discarding phase of a narcissist.
Exactly!!! I went through a similar experience with a narcissist of a boss. It’s awful. Leaving is best thing he could do!
Dang that's deep. Please explain 🤔
Imagine Tyra’s son growing up with this person as your mother. Whew!
@@redvelvetcakeYUM He gonna need therapy when he gets older.
Yes. And it breaks my heart because Tyra used to be my hero. But like most narcissists they appear to he not as they really seem
Jay is not innocent.
Exactly! Never cared for him. Look how rude he was to Kelle.
I never thought Jay is black. I thought he was a white guy with a serious tanning obsession. He and miss Jay were definitely an extra spice of ANTM and when they left, it honestly got quite boring.
😁 😁 😁, I did as well.
😂 I thought he might have a middle eastern background.
I thought he wa Spanish because if his straight hair and his name 12 yr old me couldn't realize then men can straighten their hair too lol.
His father is a mixed Cape Malay, so Jay is not really even “Black” or “Biracial”. More like “Multiracial”, but definitely not a “Black” person.
It’s stuff like this that makes me never want to meet my “idols”
Who are you talking about? Tyra or Jay?
MsRain123 Tyra. Omg I love Jay.

Love you Jay!!! Soooooo talented and missed when you left Top Model. It's great to see you writing amd still being the real great guy we know
Jay to me was the class of the show, when him and Miss Jay left, all the heart and class went with it.
I hated how controlled his personality was on this show. I wanted him to have the opportunity to have his authentic self show. I felt like Everything on ANTM was scripted and fake.
After season 6 the show became scripted imo.
South Africa is proud of you!🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
Desiree Fernandez Black Is King 👑🙌🏽
Yes we are!!!🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦❤❤🔥
Why? Lol for getting adopted by South Africans and being raised in Canada?
No wonder Naomi Campbell don’t like Tyra
Naomi recognized the BS early on!
Roger Acosta Naomi is another one tho...
It was reallyyy shady how they all pretended they wanted him for one more cycle so Tyra can get some kind of senseless revenge for him wanting to pursue other things. I am Tyra is very nice but with all the power she had, it may have gotten into her head a bit.
Janice Dickinson too
@@halitst1 Naomi is a diva but she owns it.... that’s the key.

Jay is so great he needs his own show to teach others what he has learned...can wait to read his book ...great interview Justin your real self was kinda showing here
So happy this interview happened 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I love Jay . Such a positive spirit.💕
She rolled with the punches and excepted it with a smile, but Tyra In typical narcissist fashion got offended by it.
I appreciate his honesty because I understand how difficult it must be.❤️

The way he explains the difference between “The Brand Of Who You Are” & “Who YOU Are” immediately ran certain celebrities across my mind and how at the very least, they need to hear that part. Nasty. Not classy. Not cute.
Jay is so sweet. I totally understand the feeling he went through with Tyra and it really brought me back to some bad times.
Omg the conversation vibe between these two queens is so refreshing 😍

"Fame isn't a real thing, and you have to keep the brand of who you are and who you are completely separate…There'll be a place when everybody loves you, but they're loving the brand of who they think you are. And that's not you. It can over-inflate your sense of self, and inevitably, they will tear that brand down. At some point. Always. And if you keep yourself separate from your brand, then it keeps your core identity intact." That is a truly brilliant quote if there ever was one!
