Brethren of Purity - A Cult of Islamic Philosophers

  • The Brethren of Purity or "Ikhwan as Safa" were a 10th Century Medieval philosophical-religious cult based in the lush riverside city of Basra. Inspired by the esoteric ideas of the earlier Greek Philosopher's cult - the Pythagoreans - these mysterious mystics sought to merge religion and mathematics to define the world around them in numerical terms.
    Conglomerating their ideas in their seminal "Epistles of the Brethren of Purity", this Creepy Cult of Philosophers would greatly influence later Medieval philosophers with their ideas surrounding the divinity of the philosophical method, and their esoteric interpretations of scripture.
    This is part five of our series on Islamic philosophy and this is our first video in the series covering esoteric Islamic philosophy.

    The Oases of Wisdom project is a great one and I am compelled to salute you for the excellent videos you've created. As someone who's been born in the middle east but currently lives in the west, my interest in ancient philosophy (The Greeks) alongside my Islamic roots have fought to find commonality and your videos illucidating the many polymaths of the mideval period and their study and incorporating of the ancients are true treasures. Keep up the good work 🙏

    This was such a fascinating video, with an interesting view of science and religion, as well as how they complemented each other. This is something we steered away from in recent times, however, I feel we should come back to it and see it from a modern lens.

    Have you read anything about Fakhruddin Razi? If so, is there any of his book translated to english? I would love to ready and study about him but it seems like almost impossible to read his original works

    • @OasesOfWisdom
      @OasesOfWisdom  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Fakhr al Din al Razi is a thinker we hope to cover soon in our philosophy series. His magnum opus is an exegetical work on the Quran named ‘مفاتيح الغيب’ (Keys to the unknown) or more commonly known as التفسير الكبير (The Great Commentary). You can find most of his original ideas in this 32 volume work! If you want to read in English I would recommend Sohaib Saeed’s translation. You should be able to find the first volume on Amazon. Hope this helps!

    The ideal man is of East Persian derivation, of Arabic faith, of Iraqi, that is Babylonian, in education, Hebrew in astuteness, a disciple of Christ in conduct, as pious as a Syrian monk, a Greek in natural sciences, an Indian in the interpretation of mysteries and, above all a Sufi or a mystic in his whole spiritual outlook - The Brethren

    has taken from 'allamah Thoba'thoba'i thought (although he was a Shiite)
    The relationship between God and His creatures is like the relation between the number of one and zero, ie
    1 + 0 = 1 meant God couldn't added with His creature, because the result is he still be the only One.
    1 X 0 = 0 meant God couldn't multiplied to be many, because the many is those are still creatures.
    1 - 0 = 1 if do you wanna reduce God, the result is, He had no reduced, He still be Him.
    1 : 0 = your calculator will said: couldn't devide (Him) by zero...
    Oh yeah ofcourse. why we do bussiness if an empty as its result?

    I really want to know why they think beans had human souls in them?

    • @OasesOfWisdom
      @OasesOfWisdom  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From what I could uncover, Pythagoras believed beans contained human souls because he believed humans may have been re-incarnated as beans. This is because, according to a source, he performed an experiment where he noticed a planted faba bean looks like a human fetus. Hence, he basically thought eating means was cannibalism and squashing beans was murder.

  • @LukeFromLasVegas
    @LukeFromLasVegas ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What?! Beans contain souls? How on earth did he reach that conclusion? 🌍
    (Great video btw♥)

    • @OasesOfWisdom
      @OasesOfWisdom  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! Much appreciated. Pythagoras allegedly claimed to that conclusion under the premise that faba beans when planted grow to resemble a human fetus. And because Pythagoras believed in human reincarnation, it seemed possible humans could be reincarnated or transmigrated into beans.

    • @BedeBowman
      @BedeBowman 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Generally, cultures that believe in reincarnation tend to believe in the power of the fetus-shape. As the comment above states, beans have that shape.
