More like the game would’ve turned out way uglier and more brutal than it seemed since Mimir is basically their guide and living dictionary, plus the main joker of the story
It's a running theme in the game that he doesn't respect anyone. Mimir is Head. Atreus is Boy. Sindri is Dwarf. Brok is The Blue one. Andvari is The Ring. And when Atreus was starting to become arrogant he also called Mimir "head" after they obtained the black rune at the end of the wine drinking scene.
@@coladict idk but I read a comment talking about Greeks calling people their nouns was a sign of respect, opposite of this, but Atreus did do it out of disrespect
Well Kratos was a general in Sparta. I think it's kinda like calling other guys sergeant or major without mentioning their name. Or Kratos just doesn't want to put effort on remembering everyone's name. "Stay focused." As he said lol
His accent makes him so much better as a character. That, and the actor's stellar performance, of course. There's something in the way he says "Almost talked them into it *too* !" that makes the line even funnier.
Mimir: Ah, a Sgian-dubh from my homeland. Used to have one of my own back in the day. You should take it, boy! Kratos: Yes, boy... take it. We might need to butter bread somewhere on our travels. Mimir: This is why no one likes you.
Well to be fair, that’s what they were used for mostly. A sgian dudh is a small Scottish utility knife used for general day to day purposes like preparing food and hunting.
Unfortunately my favorite one is missing. It's right after the Dwarfen King side mission where Mimir tells Atreus about the chain Gleipnir: M: "Don't count the Dwarfes out yet, lad. They're right pricks, but they're resourceful. They once made an unbreakable chain out of little more than a cat's footstep and bird spit." A: "That doesn't even make sense!" M: "Well, that's the legend. If you wanted sense you shouldn't be talking to a severed head."
It’s actually one of the most interesting and satisfying detail in the game. When you travel somewhere or maybe sail somewhere or just stop in the middle of the water or maybe just being in the Realm Between, either him or Atreus is gonna start off the conversations.
Despite being a severed head and hanging on krato's belt this is probably the happiest he has been in a very long time, he was bound to that tree for 109 winters all alone and tortured everyday. Now he has 2 new friends for banter and to share adventure and freedom again, instead of being alone and suffering on a mountain
I was so worried when Mimir joined the party that he was just going to be another annoying sidekick "comedic relief", but he was actually genuinely charming, a good story teller, entertaining with his jokes and stories. Good job writers. And of course, amazing work to Mimir's voice actor.
FR, he could’ve easily been the most annoying thing in the game. But they executed it really well, he has wisdom and sorrow so he isn’t just a joking head and they knew when it was appropriate to have him speak and when he should shut up, especially when they reach jotunheim and Mimir voluntarily stays behind to the let the ending properly be just about Kratos and Atreus.
Having a talking head strapped to Kratos's belt is a genius move from the Santa Monica team, like while playing with only atreus and kratos you kind of fail to grasp the stories of norse mythology. It's so damn satisfying to have that absence of knowledge gone, mimir was like the tour guide the we needed.
But it was risky too. Done poorly he could've been annoying. But nah, he's simply amazing. The writing, the acting (by Alastair Duncan), the chemistry between him, the brother and the lad. Masterful stuff.
Mimir is my personal favourite character in GoW, not just because of his jokes, but also when Kratos and Atreus try to go to Jotenheim for the first time and Baldur attacks Mimir offers his life to spare Kratos.
I remember that one time I got Kratos accidentally crushed to death by that trap in Niflheim during my 1st trip and Mimir exclaimed, "well, this is a fine mess!" I laughed so hard, it sounded like it was just an inconvenience
We’re gonna get at least one laugh out of Kratos😂😂we have to. Not jus a little chuckle but like a genuine laugh bc Mimir and Arteus are jus too much😂😂😂😂
you can see the exact moment when Kratos stops thinking of Mimir as a "nobody waste of space" and starts thinking of him as a "brother". its the moment when Kratos "stops lashing out" at Mimir and hitting him for saying "he's cracked" but right before he jokes about using a "old knife to buttering toast".
I love how Mimir is voiced by the same guy(Alastair Duncan) who previously voiced Senator Armstrong in Metal Gear Rising and Celembrimbor in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor(and Shadow of War). It makes this character even cooler.
Now that I think about it, Kratos was actually pretty gentle with Mimir when he took his head considering what he did to get the other heads he carried around. GoW1: Twisted Medusa's head off GoW2: Tore off Euryale's head using the Blades as assistance GoW3: Straight up yanked Helios' head clean off 2018: One swing of his axe
There’s one clip after killing one of the Valkyries that goes like this: Kratos: We do not need this distraction. Atreus: It’s more than a distraction father. These are the Valkyries. They’re the ones that keep the dead from overrunning Midgard. Kratos: Then they are terrible at their job.

Out of all the severed heads Kratos has carried around, Medusa, Euryale, Helios; Mimir is definitely the best one.
