True enough... But the light weight helps to compensate for that. A sammi, in my opinion, needs a minimum of a 1.6 swap to do well in mud. A 4.3 Vortec does 'em even better.
4.3 then you need axles. G16B is just right ! Its fuel injected and more torque down low than 1300. I'm running 33s on stock gears but I have a 4:16 transfer case gives 20% reduction in high. Haven't tried mud much Might need to use high range to get the tire speed.
