In this video I do a first impressions review of the Uncle Henry Golden Spike 153UH Fixed Blade Knife. The blade is a Drop Point design with a Plane Edge grind. The blade is made out of 440c Stainless Steel. The overall length of the knife is 9.25 inches and the blade is 5 inches long. The handle is made out of Staglon and is held in place with a brass finger guard and butt handle. The overall weight of the knife is 6.3 ounces. The Golden Spike comes with a leather sheath and a sharping stone.
    Knives of our Fathers.

2022 reporting to the Wingman. $32 on Amazon ! Still an incredible, amazing deal. What you state is 100% true. Styles have changed over the years since the 70's and knives like the Old Henry 153UH most certainly fell out of favor along with Buck 420HC blades. These were the knives featured in the local hardware store that sold shot shells and ammo, shovels, and axes. From a practical standpoint, the knife you feature can do everything from hunting, camping, filet, gutting, food prep and self-defense. And it doesn't break the bank. I have shied away from these sort of knives for years collecting custom knives. But it is time to get back to the basics. Thanks or the video.

Thank you for an honest review about a classic knife. It’s good to see someone not complain about blade steel and the handle material.

Just picked one up today. And I had one as a young man. It brought back memories of when my father and I would go hunting. He taught me how to hunt fish and camp and every now n then when we were alone he'd give me a beer. That knife was on my hip every time we would go on an adventure. There truly American classic knives.
Another thing I like about it is the handle straps snap is a little loose so I can wrap the handle in paracord and it will still snap in. 🇺🇸 made 👍

Great knife. One of my favorite fixed blade knives. I applied Tat Wax to the leather sheath everyday for about 2 weeks and it became very supple leather and took on a very distinct mahogany luster. The manufacturer hardly ever takes the time to cure the leather properly. But I don't mind as it gives me something to do. I did tune up the blade with careful sharpening of an already sharp knife. Now it is sharper than ever and would be suitable for shaving. I like this knife and the classic old school look of it. Soon I will be looking to hunt a deer this year, and will be looking forward to skinning it out with this knife. Thanks for the video.

My brother gave me one in 1979. I still have it. It's held extremely well. I don't baton with it because I have never had to, but it's gutted a lot of deer, and cut a lot of branches in it's time.
I have other knives now that I use more often, but this Golden Spike will always hold a special place in my collection.

Your video makes want to cry! I had the Golden Spike hunting as a kid in the late '70s. I lost it after gutting my deer in '85. I searched for hours on the hillside where I dressed the deer, but it was gone. Thankfully I still have U. S. made Sharpfinger. The older Schrade, Uncle Henry, Old Timer knives were top notch tools to work with. Thanks for the memory of my old hunting knife...

Picked one up today Walmart for $33.00 and change. My friend has one that he has owned since the '70's or so. It has processed some game. Everything you said. I love my Buck 105, but this feels pretty darn nice. Took it to a strop after opening and and went to work on some chicken. Applied leather treatment on the sheath. This go on hunting, fishing, camping, and who knows where. The handle fills my older hands well. Outstanding value and quality.

Bought mine around 1981. The new ones have changed a little, but not in any important way. This was what we used for bushcraft and camping back then. It's more than capable of splitting kindling, cutting rope and camp kitchen chores.

I had a friend give me one of these in the 1980's, I don't remember the exact year. It has been sitting in drawers all these years. I looked at it tonight closely and noticed it had SCHRADE USA 153UH on the blade and a signed Uncle Henry on the brass finger guard. So I googled it out of curiosity and saw it was a good nife. It was special before because it was given to me but more now after your review.

Just got one of these as a Christmas present and it's a great knife so far. From the factory it's very very sharp, shave sharp. The build quality and feel is right on par with my similar Buck knives, very solid and nice balance. It's very hard to judge Chinese manufactured knives these days purely on the fact they are made in China. Some knives and knife companies are outstanding like this one, and some are just plain rubbish. It all comes down to manufacturing standards and to never judge a knife based on a label alone. 8.7/10 rating.

I bought my first Golden Spike in 1992 back when Schrade was based in USA. It has been used successfully for many big game hunts and has NEVER let me down. Quality is quite good indeed. Two years ago, I bought same knife for my nephew when he graduated from high school. His knife is an import since Schrade is now based overseas. But quality is the same. I can perceive no differences. We hunted together in western Maryland where he toppled a 6 point buck and a large doe with his 30-30 carbine. His knife was used for field dressing, skinning, and quartering the animals. In my opinion, Schrade still builds 'em right! The Golden Spike is a keeper!

Nah, the steel is not the same high carbon of the old ones, it's typical Chinese stainless. Compared one recently to a friends old one that he still had since we were kids. No comparison. Looks good but let the buyer beware. Keep in mind I grew up by the the old Schrade factory were most of my classmates and even some of their moms would make a few bucks doing piecework. The current knife is like a knock off. I'd suggest trying to hit up the pawn shop or even ebay for an old one.

I just bought one from a old school tool store. I know nothing about knifes, However, I do know a made in USA knife is usually a well made knife and not cheap. When I saw the label USA153UH I assumed it was made in the USA so I bought it. The good ol’ man who owns the tool shop said he purchased it from an estate sale. He sold it to me for $25. I figured it was a good deal for a USA made knife so I bought it lol.
I went home and looked it up and saw new ones are being sold for $24.99, I thought I got a bad deal. Haha. I
Iooked more into it and found out Schrade has been around a long time and used to be made in the USA. I think I got that version for $25. Not bad :)

I have both USA and China made golden spikes and have used them for around 40 years trapping, hunting large and small game, camping and so on. They are a super knife for the real woodsman, USA and China made alike. People, rather you like it or not, there the real thing. And goodness, they are priced even for the poor boy or girl. I know there proven in the backwoods time and time again, any true woodsman that's lived it knows it.

I know exactly what you mean! I was in one of my favorite sporting goods stores yesterday here in Oregon and they had Schrade and Smith & Wesson knives on sale, 20% off. I spotted a Uncle Henry Golden Spike in the glass case, and just had to have it! It so reminds me of the "grownups" hunting knives the men in our deer camp carried back in the day. I had only owned one other Schrade knife before, a Sharpfinger, but I lost it somewhere several years ago. And guess how much I paid for my new Uncle Henry four years since you've posted this review? $23.95! Subscribed.

Funny that the price is so low. I paid about the same for mine (SN 62666) back in the 70's. Always believed it had a rat-tail tang, so I never used it for anything but deer hunting. Only negative I've ever found is in the sheath - they should put a rivet thru the safety strap to keep it from rotating. Very good review, so I subscribed. Thanks!

I have the old Uncle a Henry, which was passed down from my dad to me. He fought for years to get an edge in it, as it was not particularly well ground upon our has back in the 60’s. It became a conversation piece, as he both hated and loved the knife at the same time. The new one is absolutely amazing. Unless, as stated in the video, you are a dumbass with it, it too can be an heirloom blade. An absolute steal for the price.

I have one of those and am satisfied with it. Even more so after that review. 😀 However the sharpening stone is rough as a brick. I wonder if I can smooth it out a bit.

I would replace that Sharpening Stone,? With a Diamond Two sided Stone,? Of the same size that will fit into that leather Sheath.? As the Diamond Stones, do a better job on the Blades,? Than the Stone that comes with that knife.? E Bay,? has some good deals on this knife Plus Free Shipping,? On some of the Stores also.

Great review. The Schrade site lists the steel as 7Cr17, which is similar, but not quite 440c.
I just don't think you can do much better than a Schrade, regardless of the price. Especially for a working knife.

In this video I use a Samsung H300 camcorder and edit with iMovie11. I sometimes film with my GoPro Hero 2 with a external mic. I also film with a DSLR Canon t3i but I don't like to walk around in the woods with that.. It's way to much gear for going on my hikes and scouts. If you have any editing questions shoot me a pm.. Thanks for checking in.

I got one from a local store. It had some scuffs on the brass parts and was not the sharpest. And for me it was 32 dollars. Kinda annoyed that I could've gotten it for less online. But I would still rate it five stars because the thing is amazing for practicaly nothing.

    • @Wingman115

The handles are made out of Staglon. With the profile of the handle and the contour of the finger cutouts it grips really well.

They used to be made in US. Now its made in China. I prefer a US made knife, but I got this at a pawn shop basically new for 15 bucks, and I have to say the sheath quality is great, the knife is well built and overall seems to be a good knife.

I thought this would be a great knife for my needs but I'm not sure it is now. I do a lot of camping, outdoors survival stuff. I do a little bit of small game hunting but the odds of me needing to skin anything are pretty slim. I need a pretty hardcore knife, so a folding knife won't cut it. Any recommendations? I don't have a huge budget
