  • !!Update!! at 2:55 in this video I say to rename a file to libaccs.dll but on screen you see me type out libaacs.dll. I misspoke at this point and didn't catch it before posting the video live. To get this to work you want to name it libaacs.dll like you see on screen. Sorry for the confusion.
    I've been making digital backup copies of my DVD's and Blu-Ray discs for my home PLEX media server for several years now using Make MKV and Handbrake. Recently however, I learned how to simplify the entire process by configuring Handbrake to both rip and encode movies rather than having to use Make MKV to rip and then switching to Handbrake to encode. I also learned how to enable GPU Encoding in HandBrake, i.e. Intel QuickSync, AMD VCE and Nvidia NVENC to make the video encoding process go much more quickly! In the following video I made in 2018 • How to Create a Digita... using an Intel i7-4790K CPU it took me 20-ish minutes to rip a disc and then about the length of the movie being backed up to encode it with Handbrake. So a 2 hour movie took about 2 hours to encode; making the entire backup process for one movie take about 2 hours and 20 minutes. In this video it still takes 20-ish minutes to rip a DVD or Blu-Ray disc however when using GPU Encoding with HandBrake that 2 hour encode time has been cut down to around 20 minutes as well!!! Yes, you read that right; instead of it taking almost 2-1/2 hours to create a digital back up copy of a movie for your home media server it can now be done in 30 to 50 minutes depending on the length of the movie being backed up. If this sounds good to you then you're going to enjoy this video. Have fun!

      Not sure if you've figured this out yet, but concerning the English audio tracks, if you go into the Audio tab in HandBrake you'll see Audio Tracks, and an "Add Tracks" dropdown button you can click to change the audio track you wish to encode with the video. I noticed this after encoding Godzilla Vs. Hedorah when it chose Japanese audio by default. I switched it to English, and it worked. Just a heads up since you mentioned it in the video.

    One thing that you should always do with video transcoding in Handbrake is to work with the original frame rate. NTSC DVD’s are 29.97 interlaced frames per second, even though the theatrical movies they carry are 24fps. Blu-ray movies are typically 24fps. Select “Same as original”, and variable frame rate. In filters, you need to concern yourself with de-interlacing DVD content. Select “Decomb”. Most Blu-rays today have 1080p (progressive scan) content, so you can turn that feature off for those types of files. Blu-rays, however, can also have some standard def interlaced video (480i, the same as DVD) for special features, and if this is the case, use the settings previously described for DVD. In the end, matching frame rates and de-interlacing/decombing where necessary will make the movement in your renders look much smoother.

    • @Robber7
      @Robber7 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How do you determine if you need de-interlacing and fps on the special features of a disk? Can some program tell you this info?

    • @videoplusdvd
      @videoplusdvd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Robber7 If it is a Region 1 NTSC DVD, it will ALWAYS require de-interlacing. If it is A DVD, when you capture with MAKE_MKV, you will see the video format. If it’s MPEG-2, you’re most likely looking at SD interlaced video as the source…you are given all the specs when you highlight the title.

    The best way to tell which track is which is by...
    Open the dvd or blu ray in VLC (open vlc, press media at the top > open disk and select the dvd or BR
    Play the movie that you want (English for example) via the on screen menu
    When it starts playing, go to playback and the top > title and it will tell you the title number that matches in handbrake. The one that is playing is the one with the dot next to it.
    The UK inbetweeners has 96 titles so this helped me there

    Very well done video, apprecazite your efforts.
    I did everything you described but got stopped at running HandBrake as it couldn't find a video on my BluRay. What I ended up doing was using MakeMKV to directly read the BluRay disc and then ran HandBrake to convert the MK4 file created into an MP4 file for my streaming pleasure. Hope this helps anyone out there with a similar problem.

    Is this really a better option to do than the first? Seems like a lot more steps than using MKV and then handbrake to compress. So you’re pretty much just use Make mkv to get the DDL file into handbrake and that’s it. You don’t use it anymore? I’m running a Mac is there any difference? Thanks again for everything in advance and thanks for your hard work. It really helps.

    Love the content. It was the driving factor that made me upgrade from my AMD 5700xt to the Nvidia RTX 3080 so I could access the Nvenc encoder. The AMD encoder was OK but the size to quality ratio is nothing like the Nvenc. I really want to try the Intel encoder but I don't have anything Intel in my house at the moment since I run the 5900x. The 12900k will be my next upgrade (or next generation after 12th gen). Thanks!

    When it comes to selecting the best quality format for ripping Blu-ray, MKV is always the top choice since it can encompass audio, video, pictures, and subtitle tracks in one single file while keeping the quality almost intact to that of Blu-rays.
    What You Need to Rip a Blu-ray to MKV:
    ● Your Blu-ray discs.
    ● A Blu-ray disc drive. If your computer came with any disc drive at all, it was probably a DVD drive. However, you'll need a Blu-Ray reader in order to rip your Blu-Ray discs (obviously). An external good Blu-ray drive can be purchased for as little as $25.
    Note: If you want to rip 4K UHD Blu-rays, you'll need to get a 4K Blu-ray drive.
    ● A program to rip the files like EaseFab Blu-ray Ripper

    Thanks very much for your time and effort for this video.. still works today [june2023] as long as you have Handbrake v1.3.1, doesn't work with 1.6.1 for me anyway.. running some tests on the quality that it puts out compared to BD-Rebuilder, but they both use ffMpeg and NVEnc (Nvidia GFX card) so they should be the same... cheers [EDIT] only down side I can see is that the handbrake method needs to have the disc spinning continuously, whereas MakeMkv rip to a multistream .mkv file. no more use of the disc drive, as well as that .mkv can be played back at full quality, if required.

    I have added the three .dll files and have triple checked them, libbdplus, libaacs, and libdvdcss-d. When I start handbrake v 1.3.3-x86_64-Win I see my DVD with my movie in Source Selection, I click on it and after the title search is done I still get the "No Valid Source or Titles Found" Message. Any clues for me on what to do next?

    To make sure you have the correct audio track open the dvd in vlc player and click on play movie then click on audio in the top bar and highlight audio track it will show track number and time stamp this also works for the video file i had a dvd that i had to use this method with because the automatically selected audio and video tracks did not line up

    Thanks for the help! Is it weird that my GPU only gets to 3-4% utilization? Is there a way to force it to use more and make the process quicker?

    • @cracklingice
      @cracklingice 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The encoder does not utilize the full GPU. You also typically don't see much of a difference between high end and low end cards either. GeForce cards are capable of doing up to 3 simultaneous encodes so you may find increased performance if you run two separate copies of handbrake. Depends on how much CPU overhead you have I suppose. I have two going right now and it's using 100% of i7-5960x 4.5ghz and 75% of RTX 3080.

    DVDs work but sadly Blu-ray ripping does not work for me. As soon as I start a Blu-ray job Handbrake immediately crashes. I uninstalled/reinstalled Handbrake and all the dll's but still no luck. The other method I've seen works, it just takes A LOT longer (rip full video with MakeMKV, then convert with Handbrake). This looks great. I hope I find a solution.

    Thanks.. I assume burning 3D blueray is just a matter of selecting the correct 3D track.. (Assume) is that correct? I so far have ripped a standard blue ray, still trying 3D side by side. My Player (internal sata to MB) seems to see all the tracks. Do I need a special DVD player to read 3D?- update: both available tracks on imax under the sea - 3D came out non-side by side?.Thanks..

    I’ve ripped some DVDs with makemkv thinking nothing was wrong but sometimes in the middle of the film it just skips ahead 10 seconds, or skips to the end of the film and stops playing. I’m not sure what I am doing wrong.

    • @technofeeliak

      Really?
      That's very strange.
      I haven't had this problem at all.
      In fact, if my film doesn't rip properly the entire process is bust.
      I don't even know how what you're describing is possible.
      You do go through a verification process at the start don't you?
      And, maybe your drive is defective.
      I mean the disk reader.

    For the 'identifying the correct track' thing you were talking about, most bluray titles usually have '100' as the last three digits in the mpls for the English version. Disney blurays (like Marvel or Star Wars), usually have *'800'* as the last three digits in an mpls list for the correct English version. Just look for the last three digits: 100 for most titles, 800 for Disney titles.

      Thanks so much for your kind compliment. As for a recommendation for an external blu-ray drive... I don't know. I haven't used any personally. I had an Asus internal bru-ray drive in my old PC and when I upgraded to a new case without 5.25" bays I bought pretty much the only enclosure available on Amazon that will accommodate a 5.25" DVD or blu-ray drive. Personally I like to stick with brands I've heard of or just go with something that has good reviews/a good rating. Sorry I'm not more help. :)

    As someone who uses Handbrake to soft code subtitles (able to turn em on/off) fiddling with the settings i found that if left alone it should auto select the files for your language but there is a way to manually specify languages for audio and subtitles. Within the tabs there is a setting for SELECTION BEHAVIOUR

      First of all thanks so much for the very kind compliment. I ran into the same issue using a Ryzen 3 1200 CPU when working on another video. I'm sad to say I didn't investigate it further because I didn't have the time to really sort it out and for the video I didn't really need to. I had that CPU overclocked to 3.8Ghz and I wonder if that overclock wasn't quite stable but like I said I didn't really investigate it so I don't know for sure what was causing it. Sorry I can't be of more help.

    i noticed that handbrake seems to make the audio stereo only unless you tell it what to do eg 5.1 dd if a dvd is backed up.

    • @videoplusdvd
      @videoplusdvd 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can change the audio type by clicking on the mix, and you can select available options based on the track you are importing. (Mono, stereo, DD5.1, DTS, etc.) You can also use the Passthru if your audio hardware supports it. This embeds the original audio without transcoding it. (Apple TV does not support DD AC3 or DTS, it looks for AAC encoding)

    2024 - I've now updated both Handbrake and MakeMKV, copied the file mentioned in this video, twice (and renaming as directed) and am using the same libdvdcss.dll file from the description's link. I did go through all of the folders and there was not dll file, just project files. I'm not sure if there's a way to generate it from those, but it doesn't matter, because it still worked.
    MakeMKV would not update through the software, I had to download a new installer for it, which removed the old copy and installed the new. Handbrake updated through the existing software. I likely hadn't updated the software in a year or two, I'm guessing that since my last comment two years ago, I didn't try this.
    I can confirm that I was able to open up a Blu-ray that I'd just received, that was giving me a DRM error before updating. I'm sure YMMV depending on the DVD/Blu-ray disc.
