There was also a great visual gag from the "bus wankers" scene that was missed out. In the UK version, it's funny that when the car drives onto the pavement it drives directly into a neat prison cell of benches. It's funny because it is a large open pavement which could actually have made an escape route, but that they drove straight into the one part where they were trapped. In the US version they just drive into the curb for some reason and stop.

As an Australian, I must say that British humour is far more entertaining than dramatic and
over-enthusiastic American humour. All the characters in American shows have the same text-book characterisation: the dumb one; the fat one; the try-hard; the jock ect. They are all so bland and so distant from reality, unlike British shows which actually normalise the characters, while still portraying them as likeable and interesting, even if they are 'bad' people.

It's just like when they remade Skins. They completely misunderstood everything that made the show so likable, which was how realistic it portrayed the characters and the relatable story.
American producers and directors just can't do that, because their entire society is built on fake smiles and vanity.
They don't understand that the lack of airbrushed makeup, all the ill fitting clothing, ugly cars, bad hair and slightly wonky faces is an artistic choice to sell the concept, and not a consequence of bad funding.
Every character in The Inbetweeners are perfect example of a characters not working if they are too pretty.

However, I have also recently started watching the US office, and although the comedy is obvious, it isn't forced which makes it enjoyable and funny to watch.

But to be fair I think if you put season 1 and 2 side by side you will see that the comedic quality of the U.K. Version is better than the us version but if your basing it on all of the episodes of each version, the us version has a lot more structure because they have had far more episodes to focus on character development.

4:15 in this scene, the uk age is 18 and they’re meant to be 17 which makes it a bit more believable where this is relatable. The the American remake, the legal age is 21 when they are meant to be 17 so it’s a lot more unbelievable and would never happen in a real life situation.

I can't remember if this was mentioned in the last episode but the camera movements are different and is perceived as subtle but the effect is extremely big. The UK version has obviously hand held camera shots and manual zoom on the characters faces while the American version feels extremely 'Hollywoodised' because the shots are static. I feel as if the camera movements increase the level of humour from the activities that the characters do in the UK versions and is yet another point that ruined the American version

JackWolf I thought the UK version was OK, but at the time when I watched it I probably didn't understand the humour so I ended up loving the US version (as I watched it later on). Ricky Gervais was still a producer in the US version, but both were enjoyable to watch

7:48 The original is also more closely from Simon's POV, creating pace by cutting to a shot of the stopped traffic instead of alternate angles from inside the car. The biggest joke killer is the shot of him driving onto the pavement; in the original it's not totally clear where he's going from the driver's POV, while the remake has a long shot that no one in the car would see; not only does that ruin the reveal of where he drove to, but it makes Simon's ill-chosen actions less relatable when we're seeing his driving more clearly than he is.

The easiest way to sum up the difference is that the UK version is the most "real" comedy show on TV. It isn't scripted in a way which presents an idealized comedic view of teenage life, it's ACTUALLY how teens talk and interact with each other. Yes, some of the situations are a little dramatised for effect (it is television after all), but the core of the dialogue and the character's motivations are what you see in UK secondary schools. The US version by contrast offers what we've come to expect of sitcom characters over the years - over-the-top goofiness and awkward lines which nobody would really say to a friend. The mannerisms are akin to what has been deemed "funny" in television and film for this decade and not how two people on the street might interact. UK - Real, US - Commercial.

If you were to make a part 3, I'd like you to include this, the scene where Jay gets the car door knocked off at the theme park.
Notice how in the UK version, Jay undoes his seatbelt and opens the door and attempts to get out, but of course opens the door at the wrong time. Which makes the scene funny and makes the audience go "oh God"
Then how did the US verison handle it? Well, Jay just opens the door for no reason, if you look at the shot where the door has just fallen off, you will notice Jay just sitting there, his seatbelt still on and hasn't even attempted to move. It's almost as if the Director just thought "hey lets just have the door get knocked off for no reason, that'll be so funny!"
This is another good reason how the Americans just missed the whole point of a joke.

JackWolf how the American version had much better camera angles and was a lot prettier.

    • @JackWolf10
      @JackWolf10  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Cinematography can influence the tone of something a lot. The American version looks nicer but that doesn't mean it fits with the logic of the series. The choices it makes cause it to feel less serious and more dramatised. The Inbetweeners can be goofy and silly but it's also supposed to be relatable and realistic. It could just be me, but the cinematic choices of the remake result in it feeling fake. Does that mean I dislike pretty cinematography? No, I love great cinematography but when it's used appropriately. I don't think anyone could claim that newer Simpsons are better because they're in HD, and the same applies to this.
