"Saz" is the general name for this type of stringed instrument. Just like the small-sized violin, medium-sized cello and large-sized double bass, it has a scale ranging from high tones to deep tones: Small-sized "cura", medium-sized "bağlama" and large-sized "divan". This is the "bağlama" instrument you are listening to. They all evolved from the 3-stringed instrument called "kopuz" used by the Central Asian Turks 3000-4000 years ago. The "saz"s (all) are actually played from the swollen belly part with a long, thin type of pick called "tezene". This fingerstyle technique you see is the "şelpe" technique, which only master people dare to do, and it is played only with the keyboard part called "sap", without using the body part of the "saz"s.
Young man, thank you very much for approaching Turkish ways, culture, artists with an open heart. We are not used to this. It means a lot. We have been framed by the Western Media and evil intended dirty hearts of the West as Muslim Terrorists for too long. Turkish people are a mix like everywhere else. Same teenager girl will watch this Saz playing and Sebnem Ferah Concert also. Thank you for reaching us. God bless your clean heart.
This is Saz which is a very ancient Turkish instrument there are different types of Saz such as Saz, Kopuz, Bağlama or Cura etc. Mostly it is played with a pick but also bare fingers can be used. There are 2300 years old golden full body Turkish Armours so considering those examples of Turkish metal work and gold jewellery work and traditional Turkish wood art probably the Turkish instrument Saz is older than 3000 or 4000 years old. Saz is also the main instrument of Turkish Alevi Bektashi prays and is a religious symbol for Peace and Unity of Humanity it is called Bible with Strings. Muhlis Berberoğlu - Bahçalarda Mor Meni is another great example of Saz instrumental performance. The Cura Saz is also worth listening it is so cool whether with vocals or without vocals, Celo Boluz Paul Dwyer - Sultanım is a great Cura Saz performance Sultanım is a 500 years old Azerbaijani Turkish song.
Erdal is playing saz from its handle, this requires very very high experience and knowledge. He is a master and for me also a shock how he generates all these sounds from the handle of instrument.
This instrument stems back to the era when Turks were nomadic steppe warriors. That's why the rhythm often reminds of fully galloping horses in a charging attack. These guys playing that instrument are referred to as *Ozan* which a *medieval bard* comes closest to.
Although the origin and history of the saz have not been fully determined, it is thought to have a history of thousands of years. The saz is considered an instrument of Central Asian origin and over time different varieties have developed in different regions and cultures. The origin of the saz is based on the Turkish steppes of Central Asia.
It is a playing technique without using a plectrum in baglama. Those who are well versed in it can play it. Baglama is a magnificent instrument, it has incredible tones.
Learning and playing the baglama requires longer training than the guitar. Erzal Erzincan Baglama playing is also at the highest level. The style he plays is called "şelpe". Normally the baglama is played from the thick part. It is both difficult to play from the thin neck and the turku rhythm is quickly disrupted as there is a high probability of pressing the string incorrectly. It's a nice video, thank you.
04:22 : a special pick (not similar to guitar pick) is used normally and just need to mention, even though many also calls the same way in Turkey, "saz" is a little ignorant expression for "bağlama"
