I am so lucky as I live 20 miles south of Boston and the MFA is a true treasure. It is just so amazing to have a museum that considers quilts as an art form in my back yard. And the Harriet Powers quilt is nothing short of AMAZING.❤
Couldn't agree more! That’s awesome.
Hi Amy! Great to see you again and I hope you’re feeling like a kid again!! I love love love quilt books too!! I had the great fortune to find someone in a local penny saver magazine, who was getting rid of everything from her quilting journey. I am the proud owner of Quilt books from the 60s 70s and 80s. I have looked at these books and poured over the pages for the last five years and I love every page!! They definitely bring inspiration ….. as do you! Nice to see you spark again!!
Oh thank you! That is a wonderful treasure you found. What a delight.
Gwen Marston is one of my heroes in quilting (Freddy Moran too) But the book Liberated Quiltmaking by Gwen Marston really kicked me into finding my "wild piecing" style. I saw an interview with Freddy, when she was making faces, and I have made lots of face quilts that are mounted on canvas. They are so fun.
Once upon a time, I took a little class on improv pineapple blocks. I dove deep into that and made a number of "weird" pineapple blocks, with the intention of making an entire quilt from them. Now they show up randomly in my wild mix quilts.
I LOVE that! What a gift! Thanks so much for sharing.
Thank you for sharing. So inspiring and exciting. ❤
Thanks Amy! I just spent less than $10 on a used "Quilts, A Living Tradition" and now have "The Dressmakers of Auschwitz" on my tablet. For some reason, I've been drawn to stories about Auschwitz since my high school years in the mid-late 70s. Hope you are mending well, and thanks again for a different take on quilting inspirations!
That is awesome! Thanks so much for watching and I hope you love the books. I’m reading the dressmaker book this weekend on my tablet too!
I'm starting it tonight, but may be sorry in the morning when my alarm goes off 😵💫
😊😆
I watched that video too and want to read the book!
♥️♥️♥️
Hi Amy! It’s so good to see you again! I hope that your recovery is going well! 😊Your videos always inspire me! I have to admit I have been collecting books for inspiration as well! I recently went to an estate sale where I purchased a banker’s box full of quilting and crocheting books for $5. I was so excited I couldn’t pay for it fast enough! I’ve spent hours browsing through them for ideas and have begun a list of possible projects! Now, to get going and make them a reality! I still have more books to browse! So many things to do and so little time to get them done!❤️
What a great score! Thanks so much for sharing!
I read The Dressmakers of Auschwitz a few months ago ... humbling and thought provoking on so many levels and a testament to finding common threads (pun not intended) in our lives with those around us.
I’m starting it this weekend! Thanks so much for sharing.
Yes books hold so much inspiration, nothing like flipping through the pages - great video
So true! Thanks so much!
Thank you for reminding me of Gwen and Freddy! They both inspired me to become a quilter back in the early nineties. All those gorgeous bright colors and somewhat lax quilty rules made me believe that I could do it. I would love to recommend Ellen Anne Eddy's Thread Magic. Her work is amazing and the book is chocked FULL of beautiful writing and poignant life lessons. You can read my review over on Goodreads. And thank you for the inspiration you provide through your videos!
Oh Kathleen You are so welcome! Thank you for the recommendation and the Goodreads connect.
So many ideas for the Break the Rules BOM!!!! 😊
Right?! ♥️♥️♥️
Glad you are back, looking very refreshed, and love your longer hair. Have most of your book, Jean Ray Laury were some of my first, even met her and she autographed her books for me.
Thanks for sharing!! That’s awesome.
Hi Amy! So happy to see your latest book collection. Each one of these challenges me to think differently and deeper. Going to check them out. So much inspiration! Love, love, love it!
Thank you! Oh that’s what I love MOsT about these books. They make me think!
Yes, when im passionate about something, I tend to run the rabbit trail for a while and immerse myself until i need to come to reality. Lol Keep digging, I look forward to seeing your next video.
Good stuff! Thank you I will!!
You and I could share a library…have most of the recommended except. Have had them for a long time😊
Great minds…😀
Yea! You are back. I’m happy your surgery went well. You look awesome. Thanks for the book reviews😊….I want to buy Color Play.😊
Thanks so much! Color Play is dense with info but awesome in everyday. I hope if you pick it up that you enjoy it as much as I do.
Nice to see you back and looking so well. I read the Dressmakers of Auschwitz when it first came out, it’s an excellent book showing courage, compassion, love, kindness and strength in the midst of unmistakable horrors.
Oh thank you! I’m saving it for this weekend. I have no plans and I think we’ll just stay cozy and read!
Fabulous books Amy! So good to see you back.❤
Thank you!! 😊
So good to see you. I hope your healing process is going well. These books and your enthusiasm for them is inspirational. I’ve already ordered 2 from Amazon. Thank you.
Thank you! It’s good to be easing back into things.
Thank you Amy, from a book lover I truly loved seeing all your awesome books that you shared and am on a search for a few of them now myself.
I'm so glad! 😀
I had the great honor and blessing of participating in a 3-day retreat with Gwen Marston and Freddy Moran. Gwen was a delight! And funny - every morning she would share a joke before we started sewing. Those 3 days changed my quilting life. They showed me that Yes, I can do that, Yes, let’s try that, Yes, use that color. Gwen’s motto was if it’s too short, add to, and if it’s too long, cut it off. Freddy would say, when you think you have too much color - ADD MORE COLOR. I am a totally different quilter today and have made several “liberated” quilts. Before the class we got a list of “parts” to make and bring (you’ll know what I mean since you have both of their books😉) and the first day of the class, after introductions, Gwen said, “Okay, start”! I was flummoxed - start what? Start how? But that is the wonderful thing about their style, just start, you don’t need a pattern or to be told by someone else what to make and how you should make it. My husband is always thrilled with my liberated quilts - he knows I am finally FREE as a quilter to make what my heart desires.
Oh what a wonderful delight! Thank you so much for sharing and I am thrilled you had that experience and really carried it with you!
So happy to see you back!!! Girl I missed you
♥️♥️♥️
I love books! Always have!
They are just the best! Thanks so much.
Welcome Back AMY!
Thank you! ☺️
Glad you’re back!
Me too! Thanks so much.
Love your including the Jean Ray Laury book. She's from my area in Central California and I love her her designs.
So cool! 😊
My first stitching books from Jean! Also bought brand new when they came out, still have mushrooms I appliqué from book ! She autographed my book at West Coast Quilter’s Conference in Seattle in the 80’s
Hi Amy hope you are better now and recovering well love books especially art books and history books relating to fabric some of yours look amazing will be looking for a couple of them 😊❤
Thank you! I agree comeletely. I am recovering well. I appreciate your kind words!
Nice to see you, Amy! Hope the recovery is going well. I enjoy your book reviews, I went right to my library app and put a hold on several of the books you mentioned, I do own the Freddie and Gwen books and I think I have the Jean Ray Laury as well. I am surprised by how many " Modern" quilters (yeah I get it, don't vibe with labels) have not heard of Nancy Crow! She's a icon! If you haven't seen it you should check out a fab improve book called Cultural Fusion Quilts by Sujata Shah. Sujata is originally from India and her patterns reflect the rich textile history of that country.
Oh awesome. Thanks so much I will check that out!
I, too, watched Karen's You Tube Interview on "The Dressmakers of Auschwitz" and a trip to the library the very next day to read this haunting book. Excellent, heart felt, learning, and life changing. As I sew, quilt, and make stitching mistakes, I often think, "What if my very survival depended on my stitches?" I am lucky. .
I can’t wait to read it. Thanks so much for sharing and that really does give one some perspective doesn’t it?
Hi Amy!!! Welcome back, you invincible Spirit!!! We've "spoken" before about Gwen...Angels sing when we say her name. YOU are an inspiration with each video. Glad you are back...Grateful you are here. Hugs from Canada.
Wow, thank you! Gwen was really a special person indeed. I’m so glad to be chatting with you again 😊
Looks very interesting
Thanks friend!
When I was in high school I found “The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics Vol. 1&2” ~Alan Aldridge at my local library and it greatly inspired my developing art style. Then several years ago I found “Inspired by the Beatles: An Art Quilt Challenge” ~Donna Desoto and it completed my world! These both I highly recommend!
Oh wow! Thank you for the rabbit hole I’m headed to my library listings right now. I gave my brother the Beatles Lyrics books one year for Christmas and he LOVES them- stories and backgrounds are included.
It is great to see you and hear you ❤️
Thanks so much! It’s good to be getting back.
I am so glad you are back and I hope we will be seeing more from you. Praying everything went well for you. I feel like I could learn very much from you given the opportunity.
Thank you so much! Your kind words are so appreciated. I am doing very well and following all the directions!
All these books sound wonderful! Thank you for sharing!
You are so welcome! I hope you’ll check them out at your library. Thanks so much for watching.
Glad you’re back, my friend!
Me too! Thanks so much!!!
You and all these books are inspiring. Thank you. Hope you are doing well
Glad you like them! I am doing quite well and getting better everyday. Thank you.
Hi Amy, glad to see your smiling face again. Just curious… how are you liking Break the Rules? I’ve been keeping an eye out for any quilts you might post and haven’t seen any. I’ve been inspired, especially by the book Unconventional and Unexpected. Thanks for sharing these great book titles.
I love it! I haven’t shared anything yet but I’m really enjoying the ideas and concepts and Chris is always a delight. Can NOT wait for Freddy! Thanks so much for asking!
Jean Ray Lauryn wrote a delightful illustrated book called 14,287 Pieces of Fabric and Other Poems. Check it out at your public library
Will do thank you!!
I love dc, though its been a hot min since I was there.... Bus Boyes and Poets is a great place to eat ... There are several = the original is on 7th NW between U and V 😁
Thanks for the tips! Great name for a place! 😊
I love books. However, I don't have room for every book I want. I am weeding my book collection again. I gave away a book yesterday. It has become hard to find places to give my books to. The recycle center doesn't want them anymore. Most consignment shops don't carry many anymore. The second hand shops may take them, if they have room. Even the Public Library doesn't want them if they are over two years old.
Thanks so much for sharing. It can be difficult to rehome things and I completely
Agree with the need to be very selective about what I bring in.
Oh man...great list!!! There's a new rainbow quilting book coming out the beginning of July, Rainbow Quilt Method: Learn the Art of Creating Multicolor and Monotone Quilts with 15 Modern Patterns by Sarah Thomas
Oohhh. Thank you! I'll check it out!
