Synopsis :- Behind That Curtain is a 1929 American Pre-Code mystery film directed by Irving Cummings, starring Warner Baxter and featuring Boris Karloff.[1] It was the first Charlie Chan film to be made at Fox Studios. It was based on the 1928 novel of the same name. Charlie Chan, who is played by Korean-American actor E. L. Park, gets one mention early in the film, then makes a few momentary appearances after 75 minutes. Producer William Fox chose this film to open the palatial Fox Theatre in San Francisco on June 28, 1929. It was a sound film.

Although this was not what we are used to enjoy as Charlie Chan movies, it is almost 100years old and a great time capsule of places, mores, clothing, transportation...really valuable for all that. How wonderful you saved this and have shared. TY.
Eve's suit outfit with scarf at the beginning would have seemed normal in the Sixties, minus the cloche hat.
Loved the brief sight of San Francisco at that time. Liked the story and the mores of the day.
Boris Karloff was great as usual as the servant. Loved the movie!
I just watched Boris Karloff in another Charlie Chan movie. I think it was "Charlie Chan at the Opera", with Sidney Toler.

What amazes me is the fact that Warner Baxter and Lois Moran had acting careers after this movie’s release. The best part was seeing Boris Karloff.
He was he Doorman
Being filmed at the beginning of talkie movies it’s pretty obvious that the actors were used to doing silent movies or stage plays and really over emphasized the dialogue and gestures. A great film to show film students. Charlie Chan was the invisible man.
Yeah, the whole time I was like...
Where the f*ck is Charlie Chan?
@@satanicmicrochipv5656Ah, THAT is the real mystery of this film!😉
I had never seen this movie before or heard of it! I enjoyed it. I love old movies. Thank you for posting!
Charlie Chan like mirage in desert. Not really there.- Charlie Chan
Spoken like a true fan of Charlie Chan.
Yeah, bummer 😣
@@isabelleonorschonemberg3711 Spoken like a fan of Lee Chan!
Real tearjerker! Star crossed lovers!!! Lots of messages in this one, but ended well!
This was real fun to watch a good film for all the history and great actors of the time. Thanks for sharing.
Thoroughly Gr8 movie and well ahead of it’s time❣️Thank you for another classic gem💎
Actually, more than the acting was the camera work. At certain scenes you had actors speaking to each other as if they were separate rooms.
Nice to see boris Karloff 👍
Saw more of him than Chan!
He was in several.
Yes, Charlie Chan was a real Asian in this one with a tiny part but the clothing, the actors and the styles were so intriguing.
An interesting movie in many regards. First, the location footage is amazing for its time. Second, though the acting was not what we would call great today, it was a time of transition from the silent era to that of the talkies, with which actors and directors were feeling their way, so no better or worse than might be expected. The most interesting thing to me, as a writer, is that this was apparently Earl Derr Biggars first introduction of Chan, and he was inspired by this incidental character to build a franchise on him. Fascinating.
Really, amazing locations! Ru crazry? These American story tellers were bastards and racist...
No location resembles India, u think adding elephant makes it India, u r also a racist?
Wonderful movie full of drama & intrigue. Thanks for the upload!!!
Fantastic action and history combination, so well acted
thank you for showing this silent movie with the voice overs.
this movie was a testament to the strong morals of past. not everyone was a gentleman back then, but can see she feared for his life from her murdering husband. in reality it was her life she should have been fearing for.
love is truly blind.
The famous past in which everyone was more moral, more innocent, better looking, than whenever you watch this? Dream on.
@@653j521. Thanks for your comments. Viewers often remark on some time in the past as more moral, more innocent, and/or simpler. Having lived through quite a few decades, I've seen no evidence that former times were any simpler or more innocent & certainly no easier.
It was different in the 1950s, '60s, etc, but not simpler or easier.
Where's Charlie Chan?
@@lynnrichardson291
Birmingham!!!
Letting a murderer roam the world free to threaten innocent people isn’t my idea of high moral character.
The most amazing location shots.
Amazing if they actually were location shots and not on the backlot.
Earl Derr Biggers wrote the screenplay and was the author of the Charlie Chan novels.
While the movie was stiff and over acted, I was wondering how it would be if it was remade.
Charlie Chan was in the movie a few times at the end, but not enough to put his name in the title. That was done to draw in the movie goers.
It did amuse me, so I watched it to the sappy end.
In some of the early novels Chan only comes in late in the story. I guess this was one.
Thank you for sharing these movies. Excellent !!
Our pleasure!
I liked Warner Baxter in the Doctor Ordway series.
I think old time movies are more interesting and more intriguing
Increíble una 💎 joya cinematográfica de 1929❤gracias por compartir tus conocimientos y películas 🎥 y éxitos en todos vuestros proyectos y planes
Based on this, amazing that the film franchise took off.
Not really. The quality for 29 is actually quite good.
Charlie chan movies are great 😊
Clarification - I LOVE the Charlie Chan franchise, those movies are old friends @ 2:00a.m. :)
Well, this was quite interesting thank you so very much for sharing this movie with all of us it was quite enjoyable.👌🏼🇨🇦
Oops my mistake he was in near the end for a couple of seconds 😅 cleaning woman called him Charlie chin
A half hour of movie dragged out to 1.5 hours.
Charlie Chan make very small part near the end of the show .lol
Absolutely I would watch it a couple times
Many of these Early Talkies, 1929/1930s are so littered with former Stage Actors---stiff with awaiting a Stage Director's Cues that to make them more in-line with 'modern taste' mine included....best to watch them at 1.25 x speed...much more an even viewing flow.
Most interesting.thank you.
loved this movie. thank you
Great to see Boris Karloff, and to see the later Charlie Chan evolve into a more main character instead of this nonsense. Movie making back then was very ... ifykyk.
very good old film 👍
People who complain that Charlie Chan wasn't in the movie obviously didn't read the opening credits, and also didn't watch the entire movie.
Charlie Chan doesn't show up until 1:18 thats 78 minutes into the movie. Glad i used the 10 second skip throughout the movie.
Who the hell wrote this dialogue ? so smooth so eloquent so long drawn out .
The movie is o.k but how did she end up in san francico with no money.😊
thank you
I agree that this film is historic regarding the AGE OF THE FILM, but it is NOT TRULY ABOUT THE INSPECTOR Charlie Chan!
Watch it at speed 1.25. That way it is less bad.
Excellent recommendation.
great
I wish I was rich enough so I could be a cad and a scoundrel.
Charlie Chan ❤❤❤❤😂😂😂😂
Eve's Uncle kept calling her boyfriend/husband Eric "young man". The actor was 40 years old. The actress who played Eve was 20 years old and was an American. Boris Karloff was like 41 years old.
Too bad Charlie Chan is only spoken of in this movie and never seen.
Okay...nearly and hour into it and where the hell is Chan? It is interesting to see how much progress the film industry made between '29 and '39. After all, CASABLANCA was made in '41. But no, I couldn't finish it. Too painful.
Why the hell can I ever get back to the one I was watching why do I have to go through five or six castles in the desert five and six Scarlet clue 5 and 6 in Honolulu 5 and 6 in Reno this is boy I've already seen them I want to stick to the ones I haven't seen not more bowl
Well, the acting was atrocious and the movie was terrible….however, I watched the whole thing and thoroughly enjoyed it!
A silent Boris Karloff, and although based on Erle Der Biggers book character Det. Charlie Chan is very brief. Non the less a very good movie, another time with talkies still new. Even taking place partly in Tehran, imagine without all the war but money spent building civilizations even more til now. Love the clothes, the low tech lives yet for the time emerging talking movies...cad husbands grrrrr
Also 1929 THE stock market crash and the start of The Great Depression
I thought that was Boris Karloff and see it was by a comment below.
Thank you 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩💖💖
Ive been very fond of your channel, however TH-cam is pumping out commericals every few mins. I've watched less than an hour of this movie and have been subjected to at least 40 commericals, even if I watch half of them , I feel abused and feel perhaps yourself is being as wey because NO ONE can stand the constant interruptions
it wasn't a Charlie Chan movie
This was the only movie E. L. Park did. Huh?
Wow .. Bad!
It’s no wonder that so many British actors drink to excess.
😂
One minute they're off to India, the next they are in Persia, about 2,000 miles away. Not sure why as India certainly has deserts - can anyone explain? If its just about being in' the Orient' then why give us these location clues?
Charlie chan was not in movie,,,,only mentioned at start
And at the end.
I THOUGHT THIS WAS A CHARLIE CHAN MOVIE = SO WHERE IS CHARLIE???
Early talkies are a amusing….very poor acting
Yes, basically silent films but with a soundtrack.
Come on the yr. tells that it's just out of the silent era.
Calling this a Charlie Chan movie is a stretch.
More like MR WONG than Charlie Chan
Good golly! This is the worst dialog ever written. It’s so bad, it’s good!
This wasn't a really good movie if Charlie Chan was in atmore
Too funny, Charlie Chan movie without Charlie Chan in it what a rip off
Let’s go brandon 🍦🍦🍦
WTF?!
obviously , this is not a charlie chan movie. why even put his name in the title
Obviously, you didn't pay attention.
where is Charlie ?
it tells you right in the title!
@@ericmatteson8888
Sorry, I was expecting a lead role for Inspector Chan
It is advertised as a Charlie Chan film. Do not believe it. He only makes a cameo appearance right at the end of the film. The acting is terrible, so terrible, in fact, it's almost funny. My favourite scene is Eve and John in a tent in the desert, they get up, sit down, get up again, nearly kiss about 20 times and I am not kidding. Finally, they kiss! Boris Karloff made an appearance as a short of butler; but he didn't do it! Basically, don't bother to watch it unless you are an OTT Charlie Chan fan and therefore don't care or you love watching the most monumental tat in the world!
Quality so degraded impossible to watch.
Announced as a charlei chan movie it's not the case.!!!!
Yes, it was.
It was the first.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I will not watch a movie with corner clutter.
Sucks. Not Charlie Chan. Just click bait.
Long winded what
All of y'all must be tipsy r high . CC ain't this movie.
Really not bad at all, except for that dreadful singing scene.
q2
Um where is chatlie chan 🤔
He had one scene near the end, and was portrayed by someone who was Chinese; he was also bald on top, without any facial hair.
Where's Birmingham?
@@satanicmicrochipv5656 This happened before Mr. Chan met Birmingham, I reckon.
@@thomassnider6691
Imagine how much better this movie would have been with Birmingham.
The acting is atrocious. ..
You are too kind.
@@philipinchina Kindness has nothing 2 do with an observation regarding the quality of the acting. That was a pointless remark on your part. Enjoy the movie. Personally....I stopped watching 👀 😐.
@@leilal8053 It was a Chan remark.
@@653j521 don't know what you're talking about nor do I care. It's a movie to which we are all entitled to express an opinion.....to take any such expressed opinion personally is absurd.
Wow watched the first three minutes, really bad writing, really bad acting.
This was NOT a Charlie Chan movie, but a lousy "B" movie with bad acting
This is some of the worst acting I've ever seen on film😳
Charlie Chan is in this picture, right?
When did Charlie Chan appear?
