- I was fortunate enough to meet legendary Venice Beach street musician Harry Perry! Known for his white turban, roller blades and electric guitar, Mr. Perry has appeared in numerous music videos, TV shows and movies. He even had a recurring role on NBC's Heroes. I actually spotted him in Denver hanging out on Shakedown Street before a recent Phish concert.
That's awesome that you were able to meet with Harry Perry! (and purchase a cool t-shirt). Growing up in L.A., the four things that immediately come to mind are Hollywood, freeway traffic, Venice Beach, and of course - Harry Perry! In TH-cam videos of him playing on the Venice boardwalk, you can observe people simply casually strolling past him without much awe... "oh, it's just Harry Perry with his signature roller skates, amplifier box and bulls-eye guitar! 🎸 . " On a few occasions I would stop and listen to Harry's cool guitar riffs. They're definitely original, along with his tonal/reverberating vocals which hint of a hindu-chant style. Harry is definitely a free spirited musician, with his positive outlook on life as a message for the rest of us caught up in the everyday rat race of our modern society. This is apparent in his musical style, which is unlike any other musician has produced that I am aware of. On the boardwalk Harry's only instruments are his guitar, amp and voice. However, the music in his recordings is nothing less than mind-blowing. My favorite Harry Perry album is titled 'Greatest Hits of the Millennium' (2007). We often take original artists like Harry Perry for granted, just "part of the landscape." However, in the long view of history, I'm convinced that Harry, known as the "Kama Kosmic Krusader," will be remembered as a cultural icon, with his unique persona and originality. In summary, one can enjoy Harry's many videos on TH-cam, seek out a Harry Perry album, or if you ever visit California's Venice Beach boardwalk you may even catch him near the sand, riffing away on that old beat-up bulls-eye guitar! And like aldeshsa, don't forget to pick up a Harry Perry t-shirt while you're there.
