Real cool to see Aaron here, he's done insane stuff for Nirvana tones, he deserves appreciation. I'll say that for a lot of these tones, you guys definitely got in the ballpark, the HSB solo was spot on! Really cool stuff
I think he is suggesting that the powers of autism that drive him on nirvana tone would be helpful to have working on a problem like the cure for cancer.
So glad you guys shined a spotlight on Aaron. What he has done for those of us KC tone fans is beyond belief nearly. The magic combo of the specific Utah speaker and Veleno guitar for In Utero was such an important discovery. People should check out his IR packs he went through a lot of his own money to create those for us and they’re priced more than fair.
Tbf, Kurt reportedly showed up to the In Utero sessions with something like 30 DS-1's and said "these two, these are the only good two" the others weren't "good" enough.

@X70Cressida Be careful! I did that with pedals and synths and ended up selling all of them. I became so overwhelmed that I stopped really creating anything. It's what you do, not what you have. We're all different though. that was just my experience.
@@danjwalker I completely agree. Some of my favorite albums were recorded with just a guitar and an amp; no frills, just music. No purpose in paying thousands of dollars in gear for an instrument you can barely play. Still, a big muff, earthquaker plumes, and some kind of chorus wouldn’t hurt😅

Great video! The chord progression of In Bloom baffles me to this day. It’s fascinating to analyze these songs I loved so much as a kid, but doing as an adult who knows and loves music theory and harmony. Kurt’s ability to write great, catchy melodies over the weirdest changes was maybe his biggest strength as a writer imo.
It's almost like music theory is a hinderence to songs like In Bloom, it doesn't really make sense with traditional theory, I think every note is in that song, and I don't mean just a passing chromatic thing but part of the song.
Absolutely. Knowing theory is irreplaceable when it comes to doing my job as a sideman guitarist who plays with a shit ton of different people. But when it comes to writing there are certainly times when I wish I could erase the ‘rules’ from my brain temporarily.
@@ChrisEck13 Probably this right here. Learning guitar in the days of no internet meant your best friend had to teach you bar chords (which might have been incorrect lol). I wonder when this was shot, Aaron has since stated that the Rat is the distortion on Heart Shaped Box and has also released IR packs for In Utero and Nevermind
I like this kind of video and wouldn't mind seeing more of these. I like the approach of using modern gear to approximate a sound that is now considered an authentic or vintage grunge sound, rather than using the actual gear and techniques used at the time. I think it hits home the point you make that the original recordings were a product of the existing technology, the way in which they recorded, how loud they played, the tastes of the band and the producer as to what worked, and chance elements. All of those factors result in a sound that is distinctive to a period in time, which becomes harder and harder to reproduce as time passes and as the way in which we make music changes. Very cool.

Given how random and careless we were it's understandable that dissecting that stuff would be maddening for you. Kudos on a damn fine effort and a very fun video. *not nearly as good and successful (obviously) as they were
I still think that approach is a lot more healthy. Working on getting the songs down and the band tight / playing together as one is way more important than "perfect" tone. The only people who care deeply about the guitarist's tone in a band are other guitarists, whom usually make up a tiny percentage of the overall fanbase. Most people are in it for the power of the music, if any.
It's true but Nirvana had Butch Vig and Andy Wallace on their back for Nevermind than Albini on In Utero, so they are giving some consistence to that chaos.
Great job on this video! I’ve been obsessed with the guitar sounds on each of 3 Nirvana’s studio albums. For the Nevermind album, Andy Wallace definitely added some chorus on many of Kurt’s guitar parts. From everything I’ve read and heard in his interviews, he did indeed use the Yamaha SPX-90. Specifically, he used the “Symphonic” preset on guitar parts, such as “Come As You Are”. You can’t get that chorus sound alone with just the Small Clone. If you listen to Butch Vig’s original “Devonshire” mixes of Nevermind, and even Nirvana’s live performances, the tone sounds way different than the album guitar tones because they are lacking that additional SPX-90 chorus.
I mean you could probably buy a Fender Twin for the price of a cup of coffee of a kid from down the street though. Those things are loud. No one wants those anymore :)

Loved the video! The only thing I feel it was missing from the In Utero era would have been the crazy sounds in Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, which I believe were achieved through the Poly Chorus
@jhspedals Guys for the solo of Heart-shape Box check out the original Albini MIX, it show the original tone of the solo with full "tremolo" sound, they reduce it in the REMIX of this song. th-cam.com/video/bGocxUFAID8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Fif8HaAhs4psiBKY&t=410 I just use a very strong tremolo with fuzz or big muff whatever maybe a fuzz with bias control for gating dying out effect at the end in the sustaining note ..
Matching tones on studio albums and trying to be 100% exact can be very difficult because of all the factors oyu mentioned off the top. And most of the time doesn't matter. Instead, I usually try to get in the ballpark and figure out what tone that artist was happy with using live. Or what would I be happy with using live to play the song. What sounds good and evokes the feeling of the song, rather than what matches exactly on an A/B test. Then after doing that.. Probably lower the gain and cut the bass a bit. A lot of times that satisfying guitar tone in your bedroom doesn't work on stage, because you have a bass player who fills out the low end way better than you (if you give them the space by cutting your low end), and when the volume is turned up, you find you don't need as much gain.
Sounds a bit like Kurt Cobain himself too. I'm not being flippant. I think his solos were a representation of himself. The album cover iconography maybe says a lot about him too. Come to think of it nevermind too has a baby surrounded by fluid.

What a fun video! Kurt is one of the best songwriters of my generation and also one of the most underappreciated. Great guitar player too, obviously. This video made me feel his absence..I know what I'm listening to for the next hour. Breed is the best song on Nevermind for me, was hoping you would fiddle with that =)
Get in a time machine and go back to the grunge era! Hopefully this is more right on than the Radiohead one (was close but not quite). Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Loved this! I love the problem solving, the musical thinking, and the lesson that there are lots of ways, some of which are really cheap and simple, to get these sounds. I'd love to see more of these!
Chasing tone is a life long obsession.... I've had a tone in my head for years and still have yet to find it exactly how I want it....love this type of video..need more to show how you chase that tone.
For Heart Shaped Box the solo was remixed after the fact. They recorded the song by Krist thought it could sound better but Kurt wouldn’t re-record it so it was edited and mixed afterwards, although I don’t remember by who though.
It was done during the sessions at Pachyderm. I’d love to hear Kurt’s original vision of it. I believe Krist quoted himself as calling the original solo an abortion.
Our A&R consultant and label advisor is non other than Bruce Pavitt, the legendary founder of Sub Pop who discovered and signed Nirvana. And I must say this video was very informative about Kurt’s tones. I’m forwarding it to the guitarist/singer of one of our bands called Prince Of Lilies as they did their last two albums with Albini and they are about to record their 3rd album and this might help inform them on guitar tone. Thanks. Good job guys
I LOVE THIS. Great job guys. Im doing “Come as u are” in a cover band, was hoping to see that one… keep making the videos guys they are way too entertaining
Theres a pedal called Pitch Box by Moore. I find that the "Detune" mode at "-1" does two things that I feel like get me closer to the Nevermind wall of distortion: 1) adds a doubling effect, and 2) causes a lot of unusual interference and harmonics SIMILAR to a flanger just without the LFO / oscillating wah effect. I consider this effect similar to playing a 12 string, pretty far away from an oscillating chorus effect.
Really enjoyed this. More of this sort of thing, please! Any progress I've made as a guitar player has been trying to play or sound like my heroes, getting it wrong, and thinking 'oh, I like that. That's mine now'.

Josh: "We focused on the affordable"
Also Josh: *Immediately brings out a Kemper
Sub a line 6 pod go on a budget.
One of the most encouraging videos from JHS ever!
The layered guitars and tone on Nevermind were really influenced by Vig's work with the Pumpkins. Check Billy Corgan's interview with Rick Beato.
@@nathanki1it’s easy to hear - it’s the Albini mix version. It’s on Spotify.
this was dope, keep them coming!
Nice looking guitar..
This episode was amazing. You guys really put so much work into it.
Saludos desde México!
“We’re trying to get close using gear that’s affordable.”
Uses Kemper.
And Bilt.
This format is really cool! Everything you guys make is so entertaining it’s crazy!
Check out Aaron Rash. He’s the daddy of nirvana tones
Please keep on doing this series, really cool
Cool video. And Aaron’s channel is great. He gets the best and closest Nirvana tones hands down.
This is GLORIOUS!!! You guys nailed it!!!
Great video guys! Keep 'em coming
Wonderful job guys I really think this was awesome. Lifelong Nirvana fan, seeing my daughter get into it too I'm sending her this video for sure.
Watching josh see a new pedal that hes never seen before was the highlight of this whole video. So great 🙌✨️
This was a great video. There's so much to learn from this.
More like this would be amazing, guys 🙂
Really enjoyed this. More of this sort of thing, please!
Any progress I've made as a guitar player has been trying to play or sound like my heroes, getting it wrong, and thinking 'oh, I like that. That's mine now'.
