I always check the client's reviews of previous freelancers. If I see they give a lot of one-star to people like me I stay away. I don't have a big ego, so I assume that the client is difficult not that the other freelancers he has worked with are not good.
Haha, so much truth. You just described in 12 minutes my 10 years work experience. Many of this cases happened to me. I quit last month Upwork after the client ask for refund of the work that was delivered with clear milestone delivery. He asked for extra work and when I told him that we need to open the next milestone he decided to cancel the previous one. The Upwork negotiator wasn't skilled at all to deal with it. The case got awful!
I think Upwork can be a better negotiator. I logged around 25 hours and the hourly protection approved around half because of low activity(in programming you don't just type all the time, you need to think a lot). The client's payment didn't work. Then he asked for a dispute but did not have even basic arguments on his side. I would recommend you not to quit. If you believe in yourself you should continue to work on Upwork. I am not Top Rated Plus after being at 75% JSS - back from Top Rated. There are wonderful people on Upwork too. I just met in person with a client for the the second time and it was great. One of my largest contracts. Evan, what about a video about ideal clients?
@@marians5015 I was Top Rated Plus. I have my clients outside upwok now. YES! If they had a bad experience with someone else (and especially if they TELL you about it!) then that’s like a person who always talks about “how bad my ex boyfriend / girlfriend was”… and if you stick around long enough, you’ll probably discover that maybe they’re part of the problem!
@@FreelanceMVP hi thanks for responding.. I had a look at your Playlist but the closest thing to my question is "freelance fails". Would you mind linking the video for fixing JSS scores?
Hello Evan, I wanted to ask about how to recover from a bad review, and/or how to get more clients to leave reviews. Do you have any advice? A video on this would be really helpful for the all the freelancers with the same problem.
Yes they can be "OK" - but if they don't tell you ANYTHING about the project, and want you to sign an NDA just to understand what the business even does, then it's a bad sign.
My concern is how do we detect these people in initial state? Had experience where the client was so happy & approved my storyboard for a 2D short animation but she ghosted me after I delivered the final work. I honestly don't see any signs back then 😭🌺 She sounds professional and a manager of a private school
Was the milestone on Upwork funded though? From my experience, clients sometimes can disappear for personal reasons or emergencies as well, not necessarily because they want to ghost the freelancers. But as long as the milestone is funded, you can just mark the job as completed, and Upwork will release your payment in 2 weeks.
