Thank you so much. This is the video I've been searching for for months. These combos are the difference between being a kensei who spams and a kensei who swerves.
Guys check out my description to find out the discord of the Kensei Dojo! The place for all Kensei players to share their knowledge, practice together and band in full Kensei teams!
Started playing kensei three days ago and I won a ranked tournament with him... it was my first ranked tournament too! I already like this character :) thx toeknee ur vids really helped
I never knew about the dash cancel. I'm going through and trying to get every hero to at least Rep 1, and when I got to Kensei I realized I had found my main. (Though, I do love me some Lawbro) This videos was very helpful and might even get me back into PvP. Thanks!
Btw if your having trouble with law bringers just when they try to shove you dodge(not swift strike) out of the way and it's a free gb or just wait for the parry.
Good job Sensei Toek, I go to training my little Kensei "upgrade 4, Level 9" But I leave nothing for have a great move set and tips combos, thanks for your Vids 👊😎
for the zone dash cancel. do you input zone attack then cancel button and then the helm splitter attack? or just zone attack then helm splitter immediatly afterwards?
It was the most recent elite outfit added to the game, I can't speak for console, but on PC it has been out for about 2 weeks. (costs 8000 steel I believe)
That's strange, are you playing on a console? I'm not sure if the update is out yet for those so that could be why. Otherwise it might just be your timing
Kensei's unblockable can be initiated after any 2 "hits" Dash F. + Top Attack (Helm Splitter) is 2 Guard Break + Throw is 2 Dash S. + Light (Sweeping Strike) is 2 The unblockable can be started after any of these, and it can be canceled by either a dash, feint, or side heavy.
December 2nd 2017 - is it still possible to hit the opponent with first part of zone with unlock? I have tried a lot, even with level 0 bots, and have not been able to pull it off
I have a few things I'd say about the vid without getting too much into a long comment. 1) I liked the vid 2) I do feel like conservative defending (blocking), and aggressive lights to interrupt Kensei's 2nd and 3rd chain heavies (got to be careful with his uninterruptable) is how you beat a Kensei. Kensei needs you to open yourself up, because he can't really do it by himself, so when the opposition gets aggressive defensively, and goes for parries, that's when the Kensei begins to play his game. If an opponent plays conservative with blocks, a Kensei will have to be patient and try to pick them apart with light attacks, but if the opposition blocks his light chains well, Kensei will try to GB the opposition aggressively, so throwing a riposting light after some of the Kensei's blocked light attacks can punish the Kensei's aggressive GB attempts. The moment the opposition starts trying to parry the Kensei's lights, Kensei will begin trying to feint the opposition, so the opposition should really just play safe against the Kensei. As Kensei, if you land a top light, but your chains are getting blocked, and the opponent keeps regen "ing" his health bar, try to throw some top heavies as initiations instead of top lights to confirm a health bar. You don't want to hit someone with a top light 15 times in a match, but because you hit him with a light once every 6 seconds, he kept getting his health back. His top heavies are fairly quick for heavies. Sometimes we get too caught up in optimal dmg, but we don't think about what actually will land more often. TH isn't as damaging as side heavies, but because they are faster, you can land them more in situations where you can't get a GB, and you don't need more than 30 dmg to permanently remove 1 health bar. So when in a match with a player who will play your Kensei like I just described above, throw some start up top heavies in there if you feel you need a quick attack but need to actually remove a bar permanently. Once the opponent starts feeling comfortable with your predictable and limited attacks, he might make the mistake of trying to punish you. Once he does it for the first time, you know he's starting to get confident, and that's when you can open him up with starting feints. The Kensei has to open the mind of his opponent to open his opponent on the battlefield..... Kensei is all mind games, which takes time to establish. Kensei must be the most patient warrior on the field, and this was a hard lesson for me, because I'm naturally aggressive, which my Berserker rewards. Remember that they have to hit the Kensei to win, so the Kensei will have parry opportunities. Use both deflect and Parrying to make sure you have a defensive maneuver in your back pocket in case you get baited successfully. 3) If we GB and go for a wall stun and miss the wall barely, remember that the opponent can't see directional indicators, so do something quick and that he doesn't expect, like a helm splitter or a non interruptible, etc. It's hard to see the Kensei change direction when the screen is white, and he'll still say Yoni shio if he softs feint into the non interruptible just as would if he went through with the unblockable, so you can't go off of voice cues too much. Just don't go for a GB against a skilled opponent, because you can see a GB indicator when dazed if I'm correct, but not an attack indicator, plus GB has a reaction window that doesn't require directional awareness, but blocking requires you to have your guard in the right direction prior, which is more difficult when dazed. 4) someone should make a match-up guide for the Kensei, because that's what no one has on youtube, and that goes for most heroes.

The only video on youtube that teaches you beyond the normal combo's and tactics. Good job!
Thank you! I'm glad that you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much. This is the video I've been searching for for months. These combos are the difference between being a kensei who spams and a kensei who swerves.
Glad you enjoyed it! I would recommend checking out my most recent Kensei guide for updated combos and strategies!
samjustsaid ;-;
@ToeKnee Kensei is my fav so far and you gave me an in depth guide thank you so much
this is prerework but majority still apply
I agree, Lawbringer is a pain to play against as a kensei my lord. nice guide though
I just have very hard times opening him up. Glad you enjoyed my fellow comrade!
I never have an issue with Lawbringer, but I have issues with Conq.
Conq can be annoying, but if you can time your swift strike with his shield bash you should be fine

Great Channel, I'm a Kensei main too and it is very useful!
Thank you. U should join the discord group to my friend.
Does this go across all consoles?
Is this still a thing?

Just got the game a few days ago, just picked this char up, thanks to this video, I am anything but a loss to a team now. Thanks so much.
Glad it was able to help! I would recommend checking out my most recent guide on Kensei after, it shows a lot more mixups and combos to do

I know this video is really old but if you do the quarter turn to the right instead of the left, both of the hits of the zone attack connect
Blighter 88 yeah well regardless none of that works anymore since the unlock tech patch
Toeknee no it still does I just did it yesterday
U said u can start a heavy chain from a side sweep I haven't figured it out
Do kensei side heavies do more damage than top heavies?
DaaN _ yep
How can you just go helm splitter/swift strike into top unblockable isn’t that only top heavy chain finisher only? I am just curios to know.
No helm splitter still counts as a light and can be used off a dodge
for the zone dash cancel. do you input zone attack then cancel button and then the helm splitter attack? or just zone attack then helm splitter immediatly afterwards?
Its the zone, then cancel, then helm splitter
Toeknee thx much appreciated
Do zone cancel and top light
hey Toeknee! great vids! how did you get that awesome helm!?
It was the most recent elite outfit added to the game, I can't speak for console, but on PC it has been out for about 2 weeks. (costs 8000 steel I believe)
Did they patch the first hit of the Zone Attack?
Which helmet is this?
How'd you get the yeti helmet thanks
It's part of an elite outfit you can purchase in the customization section
thanjs
Um how do you go from helm splitter to unblockable? Because when I do a helm splitter to unblockable it's just a normal top heavy
That's strange, are you playing on a console? I'm not sure if the update is out yet for those so that could be why. Otherwise it might just be your timing
Toeknee yes I'm on ps4
Toeknee the update probably hasn't came out
How can i do the unlockable whitout the first 2 hits?
helmsplitter. Dash forward/side>light>heavy
Kensei's unblockable can be initiated after any 2 "hits"
Dash F. + Top Attack (Helm Splitter) is 2
Guard Break + Throw is 2
Dash S. + Light (Sweeping Strike) is 2
The unblockable can be started after any of these, and it can be canceled by either a dash, feint, or side heavy.
how do you trigger the unblockable?
Third hit in a chain or after a combo starter (helm splitter; side heavy)
December 2nd 2017 - is it still possible to hit the opponent with first part of zone with unlock? I have tried a lot, even with level 0 bots, and have not been able to pull it off
Lethal190303 no they removed unlock tech from the game completely
How to cancel attacks? (Ps4)
Christopher Wilkins circle. Keep in mind that you can only cancel (circle) heavy attacks and unblockables
those deflect style moves u did will be ez for me since i main an assassin and my combos are based on deflects XD
Good vid thank you 👍
Great stuff, I appreciate the knowledge you passed on. Helps a lot! Just wish he has something to break up turtling.
Yeah maybe if he just had another form of initiation he would be in a very good spot
Toeknee Definitely!
Toeknee kensei is the reason I still play for honor his mixups are fun to play with good video I already subscribed glad I found your channel
I agree, the amount of mixup/combos you can pull off really brings joy to me xD Glad you have enjoyed!

Interesting
0:26 Butt hehe xd
Lari Timonen hahahaha he does it exactly when he “zooms in” to My pK butt 😂
Yeah this video didn't help much but that's because I'm an advanced tech Kensei
But I liked it anyway
so your comment basically said " everyone look at me im good with kensai too!!
Didn't your momma ever tell you not to toot your own horn?
Feinting is a cheese strategy
Jedi Knight 27 no it's a real strategy in real combat. You're just mad because you fall for parries
No, it is a skill. I bet you think throwing people off ledges is fair and skillful.
Good thing we don't have to play "fair"
