2018 Audi A3 Review After About a Year

- The 2018 Audi A3 is a great car! Within this video, I showcase both the positive a negative, after owning and driving a 2018 Audi A3 for almost a year. The gas mileage, handling and performance have all been outstanding. To be a base model Audi, the 2018 Audi A3 definitely doesn't feel or behave like a cheap car! My only complaint has been that the leather on the corner of my Audi A3's driver's seat has started to peel off! That annoys me because the Audi salespeople made such a big deal about "Audi leather being dyed all of the way through." I like the Audi much better than BMWs and Mercedes that I have owned in the past. It seemed to be much better value and I don't see as many Audis on the road as I do other German vehicles! #Audi #A3

Just got a 2019 A3 Premium plus S line, 19k miles clean title and only one owner who kept it in the garage. Paid 24 for it feel like I got a great deal, this car just goes.
They do perform great! Hopefully yours won’t experience the electronics issues that mine did. I’m driving a 2024 Acura Integra now…..Audi was a quicker car.
@@IrixGuy I do like those new Integras, might have to check one out.
I just got a 2019 and this video was probably one of the most honest and helpful videos. Made me feel good about what I bought since I have the base model as well and every review out there is about the Quattro. Thanks!
Thanks so much! The Quattro is super nice but honestly this base model performs exceptionally well. I’m getting ready to trade for another Audi in a year or so and am torn among another A3, A5 or Q3. One advantage over the Quattro is fuel economy. I also like how premium fuel is only “recommended.” I’ve been running the cheapest unleaded fuel through it and it has continued to perform great! #Audi
Thanks for posting this, have been considering buying a used one, but it’s so hard to know what they are like long term, every video review is brand new so appreciate you giving us your thoughts after a year. I agree I love the disappearing screen, you look at the A4, the model above this one and it’s tacked on like it’s attached with Velcro. I think this way is much more elegant. I hope they keep it that way with future models. You mentioned the large B pillar (the center piece that obstructs you’re view) , glad you brought that up, I think getting the blind spot monitoring system option would be worth the buy. I live up in the northeast so would definitely want the Quattro for winter. I think this vehicle is by far the nicest looking of the entry level premium cars, much nicer than the BMW 2 series, and the MBZ A class. I think you just sold me! I also like the brown interior, nice choice. Thanks again and I just subscribed to your channel.
Thanks for the sub! Yeah, this is an excellent vehicle. I’m still loving mine but will trade in about another year. The problem with these vehicles is rapid depreciation after about 3 years. I’m going to take a look at my mileage when I trade this one in and see if a lease might work, given how many monthly miles I typically drive. Keeping an Audi for a long time becomes expensive to maintain but the first few years of ownership are typically cheap. So far, I’ve had one service that included an oil change and a tire rotation. My next service will be in a few weeks. I go to a Volkswagen dealer for service because it’s less expensive than Audi and they have the same “Volkswagen mechanics.” This is a great car but I’d definitely suggest a lease or haggling and getting a super great deal like I did right before the next year’s model hit the lot. Gas mileage is excellent. I love being able to use regular unleaded gas. I also appreciate that the tires are standard sport tires and not run-flat tires like are on most BMWs that I have owned. There also seems to be fewer Audis on the road. I see BMW and Mercedes everywhere. Those are great cars too but I personally feel that Audi is the best. I’ll probably go Audi TT or A5 next. I love the A3 but definitely be prepared to have your driver’s seat far forward to avoid the blind spot that the pillar on the side creates, when the seat is slid back.
IrixGuy's Adventure Channel thanks for the reply, we are definitely of the same mindset. These German cars are incredible but also over engineered which leads to the high maintenance cost in later years. I’ve owned mostly Volkswagens and have loved them. I think of them as “Audi Lite”. I do prefer hatchbacks and love the GTI but it’s getting up there in price. But now with VW having a 6 year fully transferable warranty getting one that is two years old is a good deal, let someone else take the hit on the depreciation and you’ve still got a 4 year leftover warranty. You mentioned the S3, that’s basically the same exact car as the Golf R, same engine and similar AWD system. If you are thinking a sedan and don’t need AWD, take a look at the all new Jetta GLI Autobahn model. It’s really nice interior and comes loaded with features all for around 29K. Of course not as nice as the Audi but close. I think that’s the best car for the buck on the market right now. The new Mazda 3 is also really nice and very premium looking, it just lacks the engine power. I would lease in a heartbeat I think most people do because of the reliability and maintenance costs but because of how much I drive for work I don’t think that would be possible. Probably put close to 20K miles a year on the car. That 6 year VW Warranty is perfect for someone like me. Seriously check out the all new Jetta GLI , it’s got the same engine as this A3 and is actually longer and more spacious, if that’s a concern. I’m a single guy, so don’t need the room that’s why this A3 is my favorite sedan and the GTI my favorite hatchback. If I can afford the Golf R, that’s the one I’d get, it seems to have better resale value than the others because of how limited they are. If money weren’t an issue I’d get the Audi RS3, that car is a beast! 400 HP and will do 0-60 in around 3.5 seconds. Amazing. Also 60+ grand though. Hope you keep us posted on your car and future decisions. Good stuff!
im a sales person at audi and your video was joyful to watch and very insightful as to what I can portray for future clients
Thank you for the kind words! By the way, if you're seeking reviews of various Audi models I'm always looking to film more Audi review videos. If you don't mind me asking, which state do you sell in?
IrixGuy's Adventure Channel I live in Canada!!
@@zacmanner47 Cool country! I love British Columbia! I was going to offer to film some Audi videos, if your dealership was in the United States =)
Just traded in a 2017 GTI SE for a 2019 A3 Premium Plus, s line, yes it is very similar however the refinement of the Audi is simply astounding!
I agree! Audi grossly Trumps Mercedes and BMW.
I have a 2015 and love it! As far as your leather concerns, are you cleaning your seats at least two times a year? You should. Leather is literally some animal's skin. It's going to break down if you don't treat it properly. I see no fault with regard to Audi if you have not taken care of your leather. That's on you, man. Leather will look shitty if you don't take care of it. My two cents.
That said, I plan to keep my A3 for a long time. Audi makes some damn good cars.
I clean the seats at least every two weeks :). Yes, Audi makes the best cars. I’ll. E looking at Audi TT or A5 next!
Ohhhhh...A5 Sportback by chance? Those are amazing.
Sportback for sure!
Do a stage 2 tune. Makes a HUGE difference. I did APR
I wanna do this but i don't know how to go about it.
Looking at picking one of these up, how many miles did you put on your example. Thanks for the honest video, much appreciated
About 25K and then got an A4 only because of incentives at the time. I traded A4 when used car prices went ballistic and drive a Jetta now. I’m keeping the Jetta until new car prices normalize and then picking up A5 or BMW M2. A3 is a great car!
@@IrixGuy Thanks for the speedy response. I'm currently in a 2015 3 series and have driven my families 2013 A4 for a long time and the difference in interior quality between the Audi and BMW is night and day. I'd stick with Audi's if I were you, they aren't as engaging to drive but if fit and finish is something you enjoy then the BMW is going to be a colossal step down. I've always liked the look of the A5's, especially the sportbacks
@@joespittle1 I've owned a 3 series and 1 series....great cars but Audi blows them away in the interior department. If I get another BMW, it will be with non run-flat tires. That's one other thing that I love about Audi....most come with standard sport tires!
@@IrixGuy Swapping off the runflats on my F30 transformed the ride comfort
I wasn't offered better than 1080p60 on my QHD display. In my Toyota Yaris Hybrid I get around 50mpg over a whole tank but it's better round town where the electric kicks in more often. I also use the cheap unleaded.
Use Chrome browser for 4K. That’s excellent gas mileage.
@@IrixGuy I'm on an Android phone which usually shows 4K videos in the TH-cam app as 1440p and yours was shoing as 1080p60. I can try the Chrome browser on the Android phone (its my only device higher than 1080p). When I tried that, it looks good, but I can't find the actual display quality in the full screen display!
Hi, I was thinking of getting a 2018 A3 1.4 TFSI, What is the update for the reliability? After this review did you get any other issues?
Audi A3 from a performance and comfort perspective was great! After all of the electronics issues I traded for a 2020 Audi A4. The A4 had more severe electronics issues and I traded out of it when used car prices spiked. I have a 2021 Jetta SEL now with about 9,000 miles and ZERO issues with it so far. My only issue is that it’s a highschool girl’s car but I plan to be trading out of it soon.
Great review! I'm looking to get an audi
I’ve been impressed with the quality, fuel economy and performance so far. #Audi
IrixGuy's Adventure Channel yeah man, i was doubting the quality and reliability. I have own mine for 2 years and it has never failed me
I have a similar car and love it! Great car!
Does the a3 require premium gasoline, or regular works. Will it mess up the engine if I put regular?
I owned my A3 for a few years and always used to cheapest gasoline. Mine was still running fine, when I traded it in on another vehicle.
Good review! How are the maintenance related costs? Do you change your own oil? If not, what does it cost you? Brake job? I'm pretty handy so hoping I can do oil and brakes myself. Seems the Audi, BMW and Mercedes cars all have higher maintenance costs.
I’ve owned Mercedes and BMW and those were significantly more expensive to maintain. My two BMWs were especially more expensive because they ran run-flat tires. Audi cost-of-ownership is cheap! I’m on my second Audi now (base model Audi A4). I’m as cheap as they come! My secret is not going to the Audi dealership for service. I take it to a Volkswagen dealership instead (from what I’ve been told, they’re both staffed by Volkswagen mechanics). The service cost has been very minimal. I’ve switched to leasing Audis now so basically I should be able to trade in for the next Audi before having to replace tires. I think that total maintenance cost for my Audi A3 after a few years was only a few hundred bucks.
Can’t wait to pay mine out and get a new a3 fully loaded with virtual cockpit
I’m thinking about an A5 when I trade this one in.
IrixGuy's Adventure Channel have you thought about the RS3?
do you still have it? how is it now if you have it? thx
I do not. I have a 2024 Acura Integra now.
I was offered a 2015 A3 with around 85k miles for $10,000. Should I take it?
I personally would not. Audi, BMW and Mercedes with high mileage are a money pit. I actually don’t finance these cars anymore either. Leasing is the only smart way to drive these cars in my opinion. They’re amazing cars but “owning one” is just asking for problems.
@@IrixGuy thanks for the response! It’s been a tough decision because 10k for a newer Audi seems like the deal of a lifetime. (Currently drive a 2002 dodge neon so this would have been one hell of an upgrade lol) however, I don’t know a whole lot about the Audi brand.
“Upgrade” for maintenance cost :).
If you’re buying used high mileage check out Lexus or Infiniti.
I bought one last summer and it looks AND drives GREAT!!!!!!
Yes it does! So far, so good! I’m thinking about an A5 or TT next! #Audi
Just curious, what are the cost of maintenance and up keep of this vehicle?
Dirt cheap! No run-flat tires, lots of miles between oil changes and service and VW will service Audi. I take my Audis to VW for the service and a local and cheap place for tire rotations. I only lease Audis though. From what I hear they become a money pit to maintain with high mileage. I drive an Audi A4 now and it’s just as cheap to maintain. I’m going to go with Audi S5 or Audi TT next. #Audi
@@IrixGuy Thanks for the info, I was planning on purchasing one. Currently drive a 2009 Honda Civic LX.
Lease only. That’s my best advice. I only buy trucks.
Have you had any issues with carplay and Bluetooth functionality?
The Audi A3 has been a dream so far! No mechanical or electronics issues! If this continues, my next vehicle in a fee years will be an Audi also. They ahead of both BMW and Mercedes by a long shot!
Your leather complaint might be due to not taking care of the leather. It is recommended that you clean and condition the leather at least two or three times per year. Leather seats will look great for a very long time if you take care of them. Leather is literally skin from a dead animal. If you don't take care if it, guess what? It might look shitty after a year. My guess is that you did not read the manual and take care of the leather as recommended. I have a 2015 A3 and the leather looks as good as the day I bought the car, but I also followed the cleaning and conditioning guidelines. Leather is awesome, but the downside is that it requires frequent care. If you did not take these steps, the fault is yours, not Audi's.
I’ve owned multiple BMWs and Mercedes with leather and have taken care of them too. None did what the leather in the Audi is doing. Fortunately, it’s only on the piping on the seats and not the main part of the seats. This is a small but legitimate gripe. I love the car otherwise and it’s a tier above BMW and Mercedes in most other areas. #Audi
Could it be faux leather?
That's an awesome car man!! Like the blue!
Thanks! The brown interior on dark blue exterior is what sets it off! #Audi
Would you recommend to someone with 2 kids?
Unless they ride in a car seat.
We have a two-year-old and always travel in my wife's Lincoln SUV.
The squeaking noises are normal on the brakes. They happens to my car. But it is annoying most of the times
I never encountered it with my BMW or Mercedes. Even with the intermittent squeaking, Audi is still my favorite of the three.
IrixGuy's Adventure Channel same here. Drove all three but Audi stays on top
Nice 👍🏻 job on this video sir
Thank you and it’s still a great car! Gas mileage, regular unleaded and overall handling make this great bang for the buck!
Is insurance expensive?
Insurance it insanely expensive for everything! It drives me nuts!
Nice review!
Have u got bang Olufsen
Thank you. No, mine is just the base audio equipment.
@@IrixGuy I like your interior color. Is it chessnut brown?
@@IrixGuy how is the base hifi system?
Just bought an 8 year old A3 1.4 TFSI S-line 80K miles, runs like a well oiled sewing machine.
Audi trumps the competition IMO
You are not supposed to be using “cheap” gas in this car. The manual calls for premium gas.
Using regular unleaded has worked fine with me. Check your car’s owner’s manual but at least mine did not state that premium fuel is “required” like some other German cars do. Premium fuel may be “recommended” but “recommended” and “required” are two different terms. I’m a penny pincher and use regular unleaded in my Audi. Now squeaky brakes....that’s something that I’ve got to address by installing low-dust brake pads. I love this car otherwise! #Audi
IrixGuy's Adventure Channel - a couple of useful tips - Thank you
Don’t understand the reviewers Hangup with the tiny white marks on his drivers seat.
Not really a proper drivers review of a fabulous little car.
I love the Audi A3! The fuel economy is excellent, despite how well the car handles. The comfort of the seats exceeds the comfort of BMWs and Mercedes that I have owned. It does irk me though that I never encountered the cosmetic problems with the seats with BMW or Mercedes.
I’m going to go A5 Sportback next! Audi makes the best cars!
What size is the engine, 1.4?
2.0 186HP (the Quattro has 220HP)
Thats a really nice car, I bet its heavan driving it!
Thanks. So far, so good! #Audi
@@IrixGuy I traded in my toyota corolla 2011 for a 2013 toyota rav4. Much nicer !!!
Only thing spoiling what is a great car , sorry the brown seats and door panels not for me on eany car .😖😁🏴
LOL the seat/paint color is what sold me =)
i ask because i just found one with 12,000 miles for 22,000
Be sure to test infotainment and other electronics. All of my Audis and VWs have been riddled with electronics issues. They were great cars otherwise!
@@IrixGuy thank you
Audi my dream car
#Namibia
Great dream car to have! I've owned several Mercedes and BMWs but Audi is a notch better! #Audi
Is there a 2019 model of this?
Yes. It’s a very minor refresh to the 2018 Audi A3. The Audi A6 is a major makeover though.
IrixGuy's Adventure Channel I’m still waiting in the UK 🇬🇧 for the 2019 new Audi A3 to be released. So is it worth waiting for the new version ?
@@ariframzan8602 Probably not. I'm not aware of any major differences between the 2018 and 2019 Audi A3.
why are you sitting on the seat wire? I put my ass on the middle part of the seat..
Sliding in and out!
Lol "see those butt rubs?"
It's insane how identical this is to the Mk7 Jetta's. You pay so much more for the name Audi but essentially are buying the same exact car.
Not the way that I haggle :). There are a lot of differences and this one was assembled entirely in Europe. I agree that they’re similar vehicles but the fit, finish and quality control of Audi is better. Ultimately, they’re all designed to tear up after a few years IMO.
@@IrixGuy yea, I do agree that the VWs built in Mexico have horrible qc issues. They're not bad cars either way, just crazy how much is shared on the MQIB platform between the brands. Cluster, switches, seat / controls, sunroof, mirror caps, engine, transmission, so much is shared. At least as far as the Mk7 - this is. I drove my buddies 2018 RS3 a few times and was really shocked at all the similarities to my GLi Autobahn, almost the same car haha. I really wish I had gone with the trim below mine, the one that has your cluster bc I absolutely hate the digital cockpit. That thing is junk. But I'm at 16k miles on my 2020 and no issues yet, besides a weird grinding / rattle in 4th gear at low rpms. I'm also not using the 0w20 oil they want us to use, I'm using 5w30. Wasn't jabbing at the brands, just insane to see how much is actually shared between the two. Really only difference is the sliding infotainment ( 8in touch screen in GLi ) and ac vents on dash and rear ( GLi doesn't have rear vents, has heated seat buttons for backseats in that spot )
Yeah, it's crazy indeed and I only lease the base model trims. Their trade-in value drops like a rock. What's even crazier is that they also own brands like Bentley and Lamborghini! Audi makes great cars and I like being able to service them at VW dealerships. That begs the question, I wonder if a VW dealership could service Bentley or Lamborghini too? LOL
👍
That's a nice VW Golf.
LOL the two are very similar. This one was manufactured and assembled entirely in Europe though #QualityControl
IrixGuy's Adventure Channel he prob has low credit score, low income, and drives a riced out slow ass car lol
