  • What was Yukio Mishima's philosophy around living a painful life to progress in art, physical training, and intellect? Today, we will read a short and rare essay from Mishima where he will explore how you shouldn't work out, read, or go through life without being pulled upward by a transcendental signifier.
Do you want to join a book club that reads four Mishima books simultaneously? Well, over on the Write Conscious Substack, we will start reading Sun & Steel, Spring Snow, The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea, and Temple of the Golden Pavillion simultaneously!
You will also get access to daily podcasts, office hours, and 15+ other book clubs (the most active book club in the world. There are book club calls on all days of the week at different times. I guarantee you can make it for multiple books.)

It’s why Hemingway considered bullfighters as the only people who lived “all the way up”. A synchronized focus/restraint of mind and body while under extreme physical strain and mental duress will lead to a graceful and subliminal act of righteousness and salvation.

“There is nothing so valuable for life as having the experience of having endured something painful when young.” (True)

The problem is that people are bent to evil. But I agree: we should make morals and ethics and yes, religious education a priority. That is what produced better people in the past. Tepid secularism does not work. A good place to start is to go do the free courses at Hillsdale College online. They have one on K-12 education and it is a revelation. Bring back Latin too. Sometimes the old ways are best.

I read Sun And Steel and The Sailor Who fell From Grace With The Sea. I watched docs on him too. He parallels my philosophical outlook quite a bit, so I get his shtick. Even his "suicide art statement." That doesn't mean I'm going to do it, but I get it.
