Me : I'm the biggest Jane fan ever. Daniel : Hold my beer. This was an amazing, AMAZING well thought out and researched interview I have ever seen. From a fellow fan, thank you so much for this Daniel.
@@danielalbumy favorite part of the interview was at the 1:12:08 mark when you said Thank You For Everything. You spoke for all of us and I felt it. Thanks again Daniel. You made my day.
Gabriel Knight 3 is severely underrated. The atmosphere in that game is unparalleled. And like Daniel said the 3D made sense in the context of the gameplay and wasn't just a gimmick.
The German GK2 dub is also pretty wild with all occasions of standard German being replaced by Bavarian (except for the TV team talking Swiss German for whatever reason) or Übergrau translating the dialogue Gabriel recorded in the hunting lodge from German into German. :D
I never played the Gabriel Knight games back then...I wish I did, they look great! Its very nice to listen to this lovely interview. I have always wanted to see more interviews with the old Sierra developers as they had huge impact on my life. Thank you Jane Jensen for the wonderful discussion.
I'm a huge fan of stories in games and feel solid storytelling is essential in building a special experience. That's why I have a soft spot for RPGs & adventure games as the characters develop over time and are typically more complex. I've played through some buggy/design flawed games with a great story and was more fulfilled at the end than other "more polished" games with a lackluster story. As always, it's fascinating to hear the background and career path from another perspective of one heavily involved in the industry (not to mention the excellent voice acting ). Fantastic work and a lot of content in another packed (and time-sensitive) interview! Thanks to both of you for your time and effort!
Playing GK 2 made me start book hunting for a copy of the novel. It took me years until I, well, my sister actually, got me the GK 2 book on paperback. Wonderful memories.
Very cool. Kq6 was the first game I played on PC at maybe 10 years old and it really has a special place in my heart. That world mixed with Jensens sensibilities really was an amazing combo, one wonders how some of the other entries couldve turned out with her writing and ideas. Couldve listened to hours more of just the design of that, and more of what got cut. Having Jollos heart not broken in the end was probably a good call from Roberta though, if nothing else it would have messed up the bittersweet -> maximum happiness ramp-up of the different endings.
35:05 - I can confirm the GK2 script was released for Kickstarter backers at a certain pledge tier. I have both of them saved - "GK2_GDD_Tech_Script1" (385 pages) and "GK2-GDD-Film-Script" (785 pages).
@@danielalbu No, it seems. Both the tech script and film script are broken into 7 chapters instead of 6. The 6th and 7th chapters in each script correspond to the events of chapter 6 in the game. Maybe these scripts were finalized after the Ludwig chapter was cut out but before there were additional cuts to reduce the game to 6 chapters/discs instead of 7? IIRC the original design was 8 chapters including the Ludwig chapter and other content.
@@tonyperkis854 Exactly, and so in this conversation, she was talking about the 1000-page script which included all of the cut content! That's why I was pleasantly surprised that she had it and asked her to share it.
Great interview, awesome to hear from Jane :D By the way, if you're curious about the French dub of GK2, it's the version I grew up with, and I got so frustrated that there was no full french uncommented playthrough on TH-cam that I made one myself and uploaded it on my channel! This dub is awesome, like if you click on some of Grace's notes from Neuschwanstein, you hear weird outtakes from the audioguide guy, like bloopers or just random background noise from inbetween takes.
In the german version of GK2 they had to do pull off the stunt that Gabriel didn't speak German, so they had all of the text that he DIDN'T understand be spoken with a Bavarian accent. German players would still understand it, but they would also understand that Gabriel did not. Was something similar done in the french version of GK3?
Brilliant interview! GK2 is my favourite Sierra game and I learnt a lot during your interview. Random question, which headphones do you use? (think they're Sony). Keep up the great work!
@@danielalbu You're welcome! The amount of research you put into these interviews is impressive. Thanks for confirming about the headphones - they're the model I was considering! Assuming you'd recommend them? Like the fact they have a 3.5mm jack too
@@Andrew84UK Thank you again ❤ Regarding the headphones, I rarely use them as Bluetooth headphones, I mainly use them with the 3.5mm jack. If needed, I activate the noise cancellation while they are connected to the 3.5mm jack. I’ve been using them for two years now and I highly recommend them!
My conversations are usually 3, 4, and even 5 hours long as I cover my guests' entire careers. Given Jane's illustrious career, it would have required 4-5 hours to go over everything. Unfortunately, Jane was short on time, so we were limited to 90 minutes, and many questions had to be cut. Hopefully, Jane will be gracious enough to have a 3-4 hour conversation with me in the future.

I'll say that Jane's King's Quest is the best King's Quest. She might not have been the original, but she's the best writer.
Gabriel Knight is top tier gaming we need more please!!! Love you Jane!!!
We need to know how the GK story arc ends.

I always hoped she'd make another king's quest type game. 6 was by far my favorite in the series and that was all her doing
Love you Jane. Thank you for the amazing stories!
I went to Bavaria because of GK2, thanks Jane !
Same, and Rennes-le-Chateau way back in 2001.
Ι would preorder a new gabriel knight without second thought. Gabriel knight 3 is a masterpiece.
Thank you, Daniel.

GK2 is one of the best games ever, check it out (or play all 3, the first is the weakest but still good, 2 is excllent and 3 is very good)

Is this live or pre-recorded?
It was recorded in early June.
I prefer the live action original GK2. It's near and dear to my heart. Not feeling that cartoon version.
