Quilting Resolutions NOT to make - and what Quilting Resolutions to make instead!

- Today we're talking about New Year's Resolutions for Quilters! There are some great resolutions out there... as well as some well intentioned resolutions that need some tweaking. Let's talk about it!
Ohhhh, I love the “use at least 1 stash fabric in each project”! I do support my local quilt shop and I have plenty of WIPs, UFOs, and PIGs… seems I always find a new fabric or embellishment to add when I go to the shop!! It is just too much fun!
I made a list of quilts and projects I want to make this year, but am not holding myself to it at all. I agree that this is a hobby and it's purpose is to provide me with joy and fun!
Love that! ❤️
Excellent attitude and approach to resolutions! Resolutions don’t work, but evolution does. Thank you for giving us all permission to find the joy in our lives again. 🤩
Yay!! Find the joy! ❤️
I love that you are thinking positively and taking things in small bits rather than imposing overwhelming restrictions on yourself. That advice works for many areas of our lives, not just quilting. And I 100% agree with you that quilting should bring us joy, not stress. Here's to an awesome year ahead!
Yes! 2025 is going to be amazing! ❤️
I've been asked several times to teach sewing and quilting classes locally. I've decided that since quilting is my hobby and if I begin to teach, it will become a chore/job. I'm a retired special education teacher. I don't want to have any job now. I want to enjoy quilting. I do make and often sell quilts, but I'm not in the business of selling quilts to gain wealth. I sell them because I feel that my quilts are spreading joy to others.
I don't do resolutions. Gave them up years ago. Instead I make crafting goals for myself. Might be a new technique or finish xx project and so on. I love the abandoned project idea!!
Personally, I'm focusing on a 'no buy' year. I have so many patterns with fabrics that I have to make a dent in that tower of boxes! The thing I realized is, there will always be new fabric that I will L-O-V-E. I don't want to keep buying because at this point, I'm running out of space. I'll finish some projects and keep or give away. That will make me happy. 😊
While I make it a rule to not make resolutions, setting myself up for disappointment, i really got a lot from your words of wisdom. While I probably have enough fabric to last the rest of my life, I am always on the lookout for some new, or a great deal! As I am a new quilter, I have been snapping up patterns that scream out my name, because it looks like something i would love to create. I am so happy for the day I stumbled on your channel. You are so very inspiring to me! Happy New Year to you my friend!🎉🎉
So glad you're here! ❤️
Thank you for being real. Putting false limitations on yourself will also limit your creativity. It's OK to invest time and effort into your self through your hobby.
I really need to hear this! Things I really hadn’t thought about. Wonderful ideas!!! 😊
Yes, about buying that pattern/fabric you see that you love. I still think about some South Seas Imports cats in a sewing room fabric that I didn't buy when I first started quilting. :) I still think about it....20 years later.
SBLE: Stash Beyond Life Expectancy
I have such lovely fabric in my stash, so I’m committed to using more of it this year. I’ve already cut out all the pieces for two full-size quilts, and I’m finding great joy in exploring new color combinations and combining different prints and solids to create my own fabric “lines”. No New Years’ resolutions, just lots of fun.😊
My goals, not resolutions, are to complete a few projects I have in the works! Unfortunately, I had some health set backs but hopefully I can get back to my quilting by February 1st. It’s an ambitious goal but I miss it so much! In the meantime, I’ve definitely been doing some retail therapy! 🥰
I have so much in my stash, but always find myself needing background fabric. I’m going to allow myself to buy this. I’m on a personal roll since I now have a quilter, and don’t want to lose my momentum.
I’ve shopped at a new store this year and stopped on Monday. They were scheduled to be open, but they were closed! 😢
Such clever ideas!! Great video!
This was refreshing, I loved your take on this. Be inspired!
Yes! Hobbies are supposed to be FUN! ❤️
You have some good ideas but although I have been quilting for 60+ years and I have quite a stash, I am at the age where I find myself having to quilt on a budget. I have been using my quilt shops for filling in fabric such as an extra piece or maybe a background fabric and of course notions. I'm presently making quilts for all my kids and grandkids which will use up many of the pieces that I have and trips to my local shops as well. Thanks for this video. It was very insightful.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for taking a moment to leave a comment! ❤️
That "no buy" really resonated. I'm going to try to be more selective. I won't buy the full line, rather the piece that I like most - or that are truly dark (value) prints to go "against" my collection of low volumes.
Mine is to sew the scrap out of 2025 - with my definition of scrap being pretty much anything I own. (I buy smaller cuts & I'm not going to deprive myself of a strip from that fat quarter just in case there is a different use for it later.)
So far so good - I've worked on something every day so far.
One of my last year resolutions didn’t get finished in time, (again 😢) so for the third year, I am still saving £1 coins in a bucket - specifically for a sashiko sewing machine.
It should be possible for me to get one by the end of the year, as I am between 2/3 and 3/4 of the way saved up.
One unforeseen problem is that I can hardly lift the bucket, so it might take a few trips to deposit the money :-)
In under two yrs of quilting I managed to accumulate almost 50 projects while only finishing 21 of them. 😮
One of my resolutions is to finish my favorites and stick to buying backing, batting, thread, needles, and rotary blades for awhile.
My second resolution is to learn more quilt units that blocks are made out of so that I can make a wider variety of quilt blocks well. I'm working on Flying Geese atm.
My third resolution is to keep my sewing room tidy enough that I can walk in and sew on a whim without having to move stuff out of the way or tidy before I can start.
Oh! Keeping a tidy sewing room sounds fabulous! ❤️
No resolutions for me, but have set a goal of only purchasing with intention. Either to finish projects, replace necessities, like rotary blades, or coordinate with my fabric stash.
If you have any abandoned projects, I would love to finish for you. I do not have any quilt friends outside of you tube. My family and friends have other interests. They love to receive the quilts that I make but do not want to join in the fun in making them.
Where are you located? We can connect you with quilts friends!!
Hi Jennifer. I live in La Grange, NC.
My 2025 New Year's Resolution is learning to quilt. If you have abandoned projects, I would love to have them so I can start my quilting journey. ❤
Really like your videos and channel. Thank you! Working on your calendar quilt again this year. January block is finished!
Brand new so it's the easiest resolution year for me! Lol! I only have to quilt something - gift bags are the plan. 😊
Sounds fun! ❤️
One of my resolutions this year is to make a quilt with my scraps using scrap tape.
Yay!! I already have 2 patterns out using scrap tape... working on a third! ❤️
@@CarolinaMoorenot sure what scrap tape is, but I’m curious about it. Is that where you sew strings onto adding machine tape?
Great tips and ideas!
My plans for this year are to get to some of those projects that "past me" loved and bought, before "future me" loses the passion. Gotta work with the "current me" passion!!
Instead of a resolution to sew every day - I do something “quilty” every day. It might be picking fabrics, picking a pattern, fabric shopping, watching a quilting You Tube video or meeting up with quilty friends for coffee!
I don't make "resolutions" but I am trying to learn to do ruler work on my domestic machine. I also want to do more with my embroidery machine. Usually I finish one quilt at a time but right now I have several "WIPs" in my sewing room. I want to finish them too. And i have several AccuQuilt dies that I need to master...😅 12:27 12:27
Bit too late for a no spend January 😉. Love your commonsense ideas
Hahaha... 😆❤️
My redolution is to learn a new technic, finish my 5 UFO's, and take classes at a quilt show. It's going to be a great year in quilting!
Sounds like an amazing year! ❤️
Now that I am getting supplies to start quilting, what do you think are the best ways to store quilting notions? A friend has given me 2.5 boxes of fabric (quite a few fat quarter packs) and I have solutions for that, but your advent templates, rulers, etc, will just be out in a drawer at this point.
I like pegboard for rulers, and clear bins or wide-woven baskets for fabric. ♥️
@CarolinaMoore Thank you! I know how to deal with yarn and the notions for that but large rulers have me stuck. 😊
I would love to finish a quilt for everyone of my 7 grandchildren....started last May 24 and have 5 to go.
That sounds incredible! What lucky grandkids! ❤️
I am doing several quilt a longs using my stash
Love it! ❤️

What is the blue/white stars quilt behind you in the video? Definitely my colors.
It is the 2025 Half Square Triangle Block of the Month that we just started! The pattern is on the 2025 calendar, and kits are still available. ❤️
The Fabric is Ink Perfect Indigo by Art Gallery Fabrics.
"Every day" commitments are way too much for anyone. Heck I don't leave my house every day, or even wear "regular clothes" every day 😂
I am trying to drink more water every day... but that's about it. 🙃😆
@CarolinaMoore Oh that is a good one - though if I were to add "more water compared to (insert date where the only water was brushing my teeth)" it will only take a couple of mouthfuls to win that one LOL!
@@AntisocialAuntie- You have me rolling on the floor! We are definitely “Think alikes” 😜😂♥️🧵
@helenpeddycord2241 I definitely see you as my quilty TH-camr friend that I would have enjoyed hanging out with in college 😂🧡
@@AntisocialAuntie- We can certainly hang out here with Carolina and still be in our unmatched clothes and bunny shoes😜💕💕💕🎉😂
My resolution is one quilt from my scraps and then I can buy fabric for my next quilt. Then one from my scraps and so on.
As long as it keeps you inspired! If not, maybe a scrap swap with friends? ❤️
Thanks… shared with my friends, as one just said her resolution was not to buy fabric for 2025
I have a friend who made that resolution as well... 💔
Sew what sparks your interest. If you really want to finish a UFO, find away to make it fun such as quilting with a friend even if the friend is only connected by phone.
I’d never heard of PIGS or PHD😂
It’s ok to let it go. Donate to the thrift store. Someone else will love it.
Move on! Is a great way to let go of unloved, unfinished projects!
My resolutions are to get up my courage to try free motion quilting ant to learn more about colourways. I have lots of fabric just need to put it together ( maybe add a few bits to make it work) 🪡🧵📍
Be brave, it’s only fabric. Start with small projects like placemats. Trust your instincts with color. If you like the way it looks then it looks good.
